International Monetary Fund and International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Washington, U. S. Treasury, 1944. 8vo. Bound with the original wrappers in later half cloth. White library numbering to top left corner of front boards and front wrapper. "Withdrawn" stamp to front wrapper. Soiling to top right corner of front wrapper affecting first 20 leaves. Front wrapper creased. X, 88 pp.. First announcement of the establishment of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at Bretton Woods in July 1944 - the greatest, most powerful and successful international economic agreement ever made. 44 Allied nations led by The United States and Great Britain sought to rebuild the international economic system while World War II was still going on. The Bretton Woods system obligated each country to adopt a monetary policy that maintained the exchange rate by tying its currency to the U.S. dollar and the ability of the IMF to bridge temporary imbalances of paymentsThe formation of the Bretton Woods system is by many considered the main factor in the economic prosperity experienced in Western Europe and the USA during the 50ies and 60ies thus shaping the world economy for decades. Regardless of the fact that some of the basic traits of the system (the gold standard) was abandoned in 1971 - usually referred to as the Nixon Shock - it is still the most influential economic event in the post war-years, if not the entire 20th century. "The United States and Great Britain took the lead in constructing the postwar international monetary institutions, with John Maynard Keynes and Harry Dexter White drawing up rival designs for the new system. The Charter of the International Monetary Fund provided for a system based on pegged, but adjustable, exchange rates and an institution which would lend additional reserve assets to countries which were having temporary difficulties in maintaining convertibility. Resort to floating exchange rates, competitive devaluations, and trade restirctions to promote domestic employment were explicitly to be avoided, in the light of the problems of the 1930s"

They were practitioners and defenders of formal techniques in poetry and were preoccupied with promoting the traditional southern values and an agrarian way of life as an alternative to the course of the modern, industrial life they saw developing in the North. Although its published life was brief [from 1922 until 1925], “The Fugitive” is considered to be one of the most influential publications in the history of American literature. The group of writers, poets, and critics continued to publish material [both separately and collaboratively] well into the mid-twentieth century.

        The Young Lions

New York: Random House. New York: Random House. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A LITERARY ASSOCIATION COPY OF THE HIGHEST IMPORTANCE:
First edition of Irwin Shaw's The Young Lions, HEAVILY AND REVEALINGLY ANNOTATED BY ERNEST HEMINGWAY and with a noted provenance. In his hand-written marginal notes, Hemingway (who is portrayed as one of the characters in the book) writes about the subjects closest to him, war and family, in a blunt, unguarded style, providing an intimate portrait of Hemingway the man and writer. Hemingway presented this copy of the first edition of Irwin Shaw's The Young Lions, to his close Italian friend Carlo Kechler, annotating it on 28 pages with strong and revealing comments about his family, his war experiences, and his opinions on Shaw's writing and personality. Examples of Hemingway's hand-written comments include: p.527: "Carlo: This part from here on is what we shoot him for... This is where he brings in my poor, good brother... lonely, gallant, worthless and a good soldier EH." p.530: "This is the part I will break his jaw for EH." p.531: [referring to his brother] "When we were children they called him dregs because he was the last of six of us... (The son of a bitch even kills [??] and as though it were easy.)" p.538: "Now he has his conscience straight. and my kid brother did transfer and fought as an infantryman with the 4th US Inf. Div. what bullshit it all is EH." p.542: "Of course he was never there the day we made the break-through and the bombing went badly because the wind blew the smoke from the bomb line over us. They even killed a Lieut Glu [?]..." p.543: "He has forgotten all the dead cows and that the germans could not even speak and they were the 6th Paratroop Div. But, of course, he was not there. (What sort of dog faced soldiers are these?)" p. 586: [referring to the Congressional Medal of Honor, which Shaw implies Hemingway won out of "sheer stupidity"]: "I never won it and I wouldn't take it if I did. EH." p. 598: "My brother always brushes his teeth. This is how he Shaw the Shit disguised him. Will we pardon him I guess and kick his ass and let him go write more books EH." p.600: "They weren't civil affairs. They were filming the war. If they had been civil affairs they aught have had to work occasionally... He is certainly the man to give the orders-" p.601: "FOR WhAT?... They didn't. We killed or captured them all but 16." p.602: "I went out with George the chauffeur to show him the, and to re-examine, the tricksy way we came into avoid useless combat and each place I pointed out where it was necessary to fight, or unavoidable..." On the relationship between Hemingway and Shaw: In May 1944, Hemingway met Shaw and a date at a the White Tower in London. "Hemingway shook Shaw's hand, eyed his lady, and asked the writer to introduce them. Shaw obliged. Her name was Mary Welsh, he said, and she worked in the London bureau of Time. From Shaw's manner it was clear that he was having an affair with her... [Hemingway] proceeded to ask Mary if she would have lunch at the White Tower with him someday. This bold muscling-in infuriated Shaw (who would later repay Hemingway for it by depicting him in The Young Lions as a short fat correspondent for Collier's with a round face heavily mottled with much drinking)" (Lynn, Hemingway, 506). Hemingway and Welsh would marry in 1946. "In addition to portraying Hemingway as the war correspondent named Ahearn, Shaw in The Young Lions portrayed Mary as Louise M'Kimber and Hemingway's brother Leicester savagely as Leroy Keane, 'a garrulous scrounger with a reputation for being unlucky', a 'constipated brother-and-hero-haunted man with a frigid wife' and three unwanted children. "Hemingway thought that Shaw portrayed him as a buffoon and Mary as a whore, and was furious. He called Shaw a conceited and despicable jerk who liked to publish his fantasies about Jews killing Germans. He hated Shaw for sleeping with Mary, portraying her in The Young Lions, publishing a novel on World War Two (which he considered his private subject), writing on war without knowing much about it, impressing the critics and getting good reviews. Pilot Training Manual for the P-51 Mustang

Washington D. C. : Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces., 1944. Washington D. C. Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces. 1944. Punch and clipbound in stylized titled coloured pictorial wrappers. Thin 4to. Classified "Restricted" and marked as such on each page. This manual is for the P51-B and C, with several pages at end detailing the "Teardrop" D type - which was still in production at the time this manual was produced. Profusely illustrated with photographs, drawings, maps, diagrams, charts, etc. The P-51 Mustang was, with little argument, the single greatest American Fighter Aircraft of World War 2. The sleek, low winged Mustang was among the very first to use a laminar-flow wing, which resulted in far less drag. Also, the P-51 had its wingtips, rudder, and elevators with square-cut ends, unlike almost every other aircraft at the time. It paid off, as the P-51 could reach 380mph while the lighter Spitfire, with half as much fuel weight, could not get within 15mph of that figure. The P-51 Mustang, designed in 1940 after Great Britain requested that North American build P-40 Warhawks for the Royal Air Force, was at first ignored by U. S. officials. However, the design showed such promise that in 1941 the Army Air Forces took delivery of P-51A's powered by the Allison V-1710 engine. These early Mustangs were restricted to reconnaissance and ground attack due to the limited performance of the Allison engines. Tests in 1942 with the Roll-Royce "Merlin" engine showed a marked increase in performance. By the end of 1943, Merlin powered P-51Bs entered combat with the 354th Fighter Group in England.Eighth Air Force Mustangs provided long range escort to B-17s and B-24s and scored heavily over German interceptors. By the war's end, P-51s had destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft in the air, more than any other U. S. fighter in Europe. Mustangs served in nearly every active combat zone, including the Pacific where they escorted B-29s from Iwo Jima to Japan. Between 1941 and 1945, the Army Air Force ordered 14,855 Mustangs. During the Korean Conflict, P-51's were used primarily for close support of ground forces until withdrawn from combat in 1953. P-51s served with Reserve and National Guard units until 1957. The Gremlins

London: Collins,, [1944]. London: Collins,, [1944]. From the Walt Disney Production. Quarto, ( 285 x 220 mm). Recently bound in full red morocco, titles to spine gilt, single rule to boards gilt, two raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Illustrated throughout in colour and black and white. Ownership inscription to half title page, light spotting to pages, a very good copy handsomely bound. First UK printing, preceded by the US edition a year before. "Disney tried to make a film of one of Dahl's stories called 'The Gremlins' (1943), which concerned a tribe of goblins who were blamed by the RAF for everything that went wrong with an aircraft. Gremlin stories were rife in the RAF at the time, and several other books about them had already appeared, but Dahl was happy to boast that he had invented them. 'The Gremlins' was such a success that the self-dramatizing RAF hero became a frequent guest of Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House and their weekend retreat, Hyde Park. This entrée was exploited by the British intelligence services, who made him a spy—on the Americans. Or so Dahl later claimed" (ODNB).

Pilot Training Manual for the P-38 Lightning

Washington D. C. : Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces., 1944. Washington D. C. Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces. 1944. Punch and clipbound in stylized titled coloured pictorial wrappers. Thin 4to. Classified "Restricted" and marked as such on each page. The December 1944, Original "Brown Cover" issue. Profusely illustrated with photographs, drawings, maps, diagrams, charts, etc. During its time, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning was considered the most sophisticated aircraft Lockheed had ever built. In February 1937, the U.S. Army Air Corps released Specification X-608, a daunting requirement that called for speed, range, and climb capabilities impossible to achieve at that time with a single-engine aircraft. In Burbank, California, a Lockheed design team led by Hall Hibbard, and assisted by a young engineer named Clarence "Kelly" Johnson, immediately began a series of designs that would culminate in the contract-winning XP-38. Jim Gerschler became project engineer on the aircraft. The XP-38 (it was many months before it was called the Lightning) was of an extraordinarily advanced conception, an all-metal, midwing monoplane with twin Allison engines using General Electric turbo-superchargers, a central nacelle for the pilot and armament, contra-rotating propellers, twin-booms and rudders, and a tricycle landing gear. Nothing like it had ever been seen before, and it would be the only single-seat, twin-engine aircraft to reach mass production status during World War II. The distinctive sight and sound of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning would make it one of the best-known aircraft of the war. First flown on January 27, 1939, by one of its staunchest advocates, Air Corps 1st Lieutenant Ben Kelsey, the prototype XP-38 made national headlines when it crashed on a transcontinental record-setting attempt. Nevertheless, imminent war in Europe accentuated the need for the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, and production orders began to flow in. By war's end, a total of 10,037 P-38s had been built. As it was much more modern than the Curtiss P-40, there was a great demand in every theater of war for the twin-engine fighter. The big Lockheed P-38 Lightning had its greatest successes in the Pacific Theater, where the two leading aces, Majors Richard I. Bong and Thomas B. McGuire, scored 40 and 38 victories, respectively, using only the Lightning. The Lightning was also the only plane capable of carrying out the extraordinary 800-mile mission that climaxed with the shoot-down of the Mitsubishi "Betty" carrying Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto on April 18, 1943. Not as maneuverable as the Japanese fighters, the Lockheed P-38 Lightnings used dive and zoom tactics and their formidable center-line firepower of four .50-inch machine guns and a single 20-mm cannon to gain victories. It gave its pilots confidence on the daily long-distance flights over water, for if one engine was lost to combat or accident, the Lightning was able to limp home on the other. The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was less at home in Europe, where its large size made it less maneuverable than the German fighters it faced. Further, its Allison engines didn't operate as well at the high altitudes and cold temperatures of the European Theater. It became a workhorse nonetheless, doing duty in bomber escort, reconnaissance, and bombing, carrying as much as 4000 pounds of bombs in the latter role. One version of the P-38 was modified with a "droop-snoot" and carried a bombardier and either a Norden bombsight or a radar set. About 1,400 Lockheed P-38 Lightnings were completed as F-4 and F-5 reconnaissance planes, which were flown, unarmed and unafraid, deep within enemy territory. There were more Lightning reconnaissance planes than any other type in the USAAF. The Lockheed P-38 Lightning set many records. It was the only USAAF fighter to be in production prior to the start of the war and still in production on VJ-Day, August 15, 1945. It was the first fighter with sufficient range to make ferry flights across the Atlantic. It was also the first fighter for which compressibility problems were forecast, and among the first to experience compressibility. The P-38 was the first fighter to use power-boosted flight controls as well as the first to have a tricycle landing gear. Curiously, Lockheed did not have much luck in creating advanced versions of the Lightning. The more powerful XP-49 and XP-58 took too long to mature, and neither was successful. It really didn't matter, for the Lockheed P-38 Lightning was capable of doing all that was required of it. -The Editors of Publications International, Ltd. Several small splits to spine. Several tiny chips/creases to to fore-edge of front cover. Very mild Usual mild wear from metal binding pins to front and rear inside covers. A sensational, well preserved, clean copy.

        Tiermaerchenkalender 1945.

Magdeburg 1944 lex.4° 28 ungez. S. OHKLdr.
