        An American Dilemma

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, , 1944. The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy. 2 volumes, octavo. Original yellow cloth, spines lettered in brown. With the dust jackets in light and dark yellow respectively, as issued. A fine set in the jackets. First edition, first printing. Myrdal shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics with Friedrich Hayek in 1974, for their "pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and for their penetrating analysis of the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena." Commissioned by the Carnegie Institute, the project drew on sociological, economic, anthropological and legal data, to enquire into the "American Dilemma" - the sharp contrast between high ideals and the failure to deliver basic human rights in the 80 years since the Civil War.         L'art d'André Dhôtel. Manuscrit autographe et tapuscrit complets

S.n. (Journal des débats) 1944 - - S.n. (Journal des débats), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1944), 13,5x21,5cm & 2 pages in-4, 2 1/2 pages in-8. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Sirius

London: Secker & Warburg,, 1944. A Fantasy of Love and Discord. Octavo. Original tan cloth, titles to spine in brown. With the pictorial dust jacket. Head of spine slightly frayed, bottom corner of front board a little bumped, faint tape ghosting to endpapers and verso of jacket. An excellent copy in a lightly edge-rubbed but bright jacket that is slightly shorter than the book. First edition, first impression, of one of the author's major works of science fiction, a parable of a dog raised as a human. "In this remarkable novel the author takes us outside the sphere of direct contact and shows us the world as seen through the eyes of a dog, Sirius, whose brain has been developed by a psychologist, with the assistance of science, to that of a normal human being. He lives, eats and grows up in the psychologist's household as one of his family, and is closest to the daughter Plaxy; it is in his relationship with her that he most nearly approaches emotional fulfilment. His handlessness and his poor eyesight greatly hamper him, though superior scent and hearing to some extent compensate. His chief means of self-expression is music, but hunting and the care of sheep also occupy him. For a while he studies and is studied at Cambridge, observes humanity in the mass in East London, and investigates the religion of the tribes of Homo Sapiens among whom he lives."         Winston Churchill Corrected Draft Reading Copy for a Radio Speech in 1944. Churchill speaks of the war in Europe and the Pacific ? ?Mussolini indeed escaped to eat the bread of affliction at Hitler?s table, to shoot his son-in-law, and to help the Germans wreak vengeance upon the Italian masses ??

[London], [March 1944] "Typed Manuscript unsigned, 24 separate pages in carbon on lightweight paper, of a 30 page working manuscript, 7.5? x 9.5? of the 47-minute radio address given by Prime Minister Churchill in London on March 26, 1944. Pages 1-3 and 10-30 are present. Minor flaws. Ten pages have pencil edit markings. Two pages have penciled words in an unknown hand: ?to what we were planning to? (Page 14) and ?an account of? (page 19). From the Collection of Churchill?s secretary, Kathleen Hill. Fine condition. ?The New York Times? headlined on March 27, 1944, ?Hour of Action Nearing, Says Churchill / Sees Victory Sure.? Present is a transcript of the entire speech. Excerpts from this working manuscript: Churchill begins, ?I hope you will not imagine that I am going to try to make you some extraordinary pronouncement tonight and tell you exactly how all the problems of mankind in war and peace are going to be solved...? ?We shall require from our people here, from Parliament, from the Press, from all classes, the same cool, strong nerves, the same toughness of fibre which stood us in good in the days when we were all alone under the blitz.""?Mussolini indeed escaped to eat the bread of affliction at Hitler?s table, to shoot his son-in-law, and to help the Germans wreak vengeance upon the Italian masses whom he had professed to love and over whom he had ruled for more than 20 years. ?This fate and judgment more terrible than death has overtaken the vainglorious dictator who stabbed France in the back and thought that his crime had gained him the empire of the Mediterranean.""?The conquest of Sicily and Naples bought in their train the surrender of Sardinia and the liberation of Corsica, islands which had been expected to require for themselves a serious expedition and a hard campaign. We now hold one-third of the mainland of Italy ...? ""The American victories in the Pacific and in particular their latest conquest and liberation of the Marshall Islands, constitute superb examples of the combination of naval, air and military force. It is possible that the war in the Pacific may progress more rapidly than was formerly thought possible. The Japanese are showing signs of great weakness.""?The attrition of their shipping, especially their oil tankers, and of their Air forces, on all of which President Roosevelt dealt with sure foresight a year ago, has become not merely evident but obvious. They have not felt strong enough to risk their Fleet in a general engagement for the sake of their outer defence line. In this they have been prudent, considering the immense expansion of the United States naval power since the Japanese treacherous assault on Pearl Harbor.""?What fools the Japanese ruling caste were to bring against themselves the mighty, latent war-energies of the great Republic for the sake of carrying out a base and squalid ambuscade ...""?When I spoke a year ago I drew attention to the possibility that there would be a prolonged interval between the collapse of Hitler and the downfall of Japan. I still think there will be an interval, but I do not consider it will necessarily be as long an interval as I thought a year ago. But be it long or be it short, we shall go through with our American brothers with our utmost strength and to the very end...? ?We may ourselves be the object of new forms of attack from the enemy. Britain can take it. She has never flinched or failed. And when the signal is given, the whole circle of avenging nations will hurl themselves upon the foe and batter out the life of the cruellest tyranny which has ever sought to bar the progress of mankind.?"

        What Is Life?

Cambridge - At The University Press 1944 - The first edition of this exceptionally influential physics work from Schrodinger. Illustrated with four photographic plates and illustrations in the text. The book was based on a course of public lectures delivered by Schrdinger in February 1943, under the auspices of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies at Trinity College, Dublin. The lectures attracted an audience of about 400, who were warned that the subject-matter was a difficult one and that the lectures could not be termed popular, even though the physicists most dreaded weapon, mathematical deduction, would hardly be utilized. Schrodinger's lecture focused on one important question: how can the events in space and time which take place within the spatial boundary of a living organism be accounted for by physics and chemistryCondition: In a green cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, smart, though with some bumping and some marks. Dustwrapper is sound, though with some edgewear and a few handling marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD in a VERY GOOD dustwrapper. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A rare, original "Schutz-Pass" granting a Hungarian Jewish refugee protection and entry into Sweden, signed by Raoul Wallenberg

"Rare Partly-printed Document Signed with his mark as Secretary to the Swedish Legation at Budapest, 1 page, 8.25"" x 13.25"", Budapest, September 26, 1944, printed in blue and gold with text in German and Hungarian, a ""SHUTZ-PASS,"" or ""PROTECTION-PASS,"" essentially a visa allowing ""Frau Eugen Radvány,"" a Jewish native of Budapest entry into Sweden. Countersigned by Carl Ivan Danielsson (""Danielsson"") as head of the Swedish mission in Budapest. With purple ink stamp of the Swedish legation in Budapest at bottom center. Minor partial fold separations at top and left margins, as well as pinhole at center, do not affect text, light soiling, else very good condition. A rare document from Wallenberg's heroic efforts to save thousands of Hungarian Jews from certain extermination at Auschwitz-Birkenau. This ""Shutz-Pass,"" grants protection to a 49-year-old Budapest native, ""Frau Eugen Radvány"" (born ""Margarete Kern""), and allows her entry into Sweden by means of including her name on a ""collective passport"" (""Kollektivpass ""). The pass states that Radvány would continue under Swedish protection until her entry into that country. Due to the fact that Wallenberg issued thousands more of these passes than for which he had originally obtained permission, he chose to simply add a mark in the event the Hungarian or German authorities raised the issue. Luckily for Wallenberg and those lucky enough to hold these lifesaving documents, the documents' legitimacy were never questioned. Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg engaged in extraordinary efforts to save Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust. His heroic actions began in July 1944, when ?the Swedish Foreign Ministry, at the request of Jewish organizations, sent him on a rescue mission to Budapest, as an attaché to the Swedish Embassy. By this time, 476,000 Hungarian Jews had already been deported to extermination camps, and deportation had been ordered for Budapest Jewry. Wallenberg?s chief operation was the distribution of Swedish certificates of protection (?Wallenberg Passports? or Schutz-Pass), along with Schutzbrief (Letters of Protection), and requests of exemption addressed to the Külföldieket Ellenörzö Hatóság (National Central Authority Supervising Foreigners). Armed with such documents, Jews fell under the protection of Sweden, an officially neutral nation. ?When the Soviet army was closing in on Budapest and the other diplomats left the city, Wallenberg chose to remain there in order to protect ?his Jews? in any eventuality which might arise. He went to the Soviet headquarters in Debrecyn for that purpose; all trace was lost of him and he was never seen again alive"". (Encyclopedia Judaica)Although Wallenberg issued as many of these passes as he could, precious few survive today. A quite similar document recently sold at Kestenbaum & Company in New York for $13,530.
