Salon d'Automne 1944 [Catalogue des ouvrages de peinture, sculpture, dessin, gravure, architecture et art décoratif exposées au Palais des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris (Salon de la Libération) : inc. Exposition Pablo Picasso]

Paris: Durand, 1944. Fair. Front cover detached and with two clean tears at left edge, some chipping to right edge. Title page missing (?) Age toning in general to other pages, but everything else tight. With a few small notations in pencil, apparently denoting artists whose works the catalogue owner especially wanted to see. The detached cover would look stellar if framed!. Red/white/blue illustrated French patriotic wraps with French blue lettering. 64 pp. with no illustrations. Separate sheet listing the group of surrealist artists exhibiting. A very scarce copy of the catalogue from the first post-liberation Salon d'Automne, held at Salon d'Automne (Paris), 6 Oct. - 5 Nov. 1944. "The Salon d'Automne was established as an alternative to the conservative official Salon. It was also an alternative to the Salon des Indépendants, which was liberal but had a juryless policy that often led to mediocrity. The founders of the Salon d'Automne were a group of artists and poets that included Eugène Carrière, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Georges Rouault, Édouard Vuillard, Joris-Karl Huysmans, and Émile Verhaeren, under the leadership of the architect Frantz Jourdain. They decided to form their own organization with the aims of welcoming any artist who wished to join, selecting a jury for exhibitions by drawing straws from the new group's membership, and giving the decorative arts the same respect accorded the fine arts...The first Salon d'Automne was held on October 31, 1903, at the Petit-Palais. The organizers chose autumn as the time of year for their shows because most other exhibits in Paris took place in the spring and summer." (Encyclopedia Britannica); "In August 1944 came the Liberation of Paris, and the first Autumn Salon to be held in the newly freed city. This time Picasso is given a room of his own that he fills with examples of his wartime production. It is a triumphant return for Picasso, marred, however, by disturbances that have remained unattributed. On Nov. 16, 1944, Matisse wrote a letter to Camoin: "Have you seen the Picasso room? It is much talked about. There were demonstrations in the street against it. What success! If there is applause, whistle." One can guess who the demonstrators might have been -- cronies of the Fauves, still ranting against the Judeo-Marxist decadent Picasso." (Michele C. Cone, Matisse and the Nationalism of Vichy, 1940-1944, artnet Magazine); The "Exposition Pablo Picasso" appears on page 71 of the catalogue.

        Judaica

August 2, 1944. Oskar Schindler witnessed a German raid on the Jewish ghetto in Krakow in the summer of 1942 and watched innocent people being packed onto trains bound for certain death. He later said, "Beyond this day, no thinking person could fail to see what would happen. I was now resolved to do everything in my power to defeat the system." After the Krakow ghetto was liquidated, many Jews were sent to the Plaszow concentration camp. Schindler wrote the names and jobs of 1200 Jews at Plaszow that he needed to work at his enamelware factory in Krakow and gave this list to the Nazi SS. His workers were called the Schindlerjuden (Schindler Jews). He called them "my children." The camp at Plaszow had been opened in December 1942. As the Russian forces advanced in late 1944, the Germans began the evacuation of the slave labor camps in their path. From the camp at Plaszow, many were sent to Auschwitz. <br /><br />Typed Document initialed by an official, one page, 8.25" x 12". Headed in German and Polish: <I>"Polish Police Station."</I> Text in Polish. [Plaszow], August 2, 1944. Five people are listed, each accused of sabotage and to be sent to the Plaszow Concentration Camp on August 3, 1944: Albert Zóbe, Jozef Openchinski, Jan Stanoraski, Eva Rospondek, and Jacek Kasperek. The SS-WVHA is mentioned at the end of the list. Oswald Pohl, general of the Waffen-SS, was head of the SS-WVHA, the main bureau for economic administration, was in charge of the organization of the concentration camps. Two file holes in blank left margin, lightly creased, else in fine condition.

Oro e lavoro. Alla memoria di Aurelio Baisi. Rapallo

s.e. (Tipografia Moderna), s.l. (Rapallo) 1944 - In 8 (cm 17 x 24), pp. 22 (il frontespizio e' compreso nella numerazione delle pagine). Opuscolo privo di legatura all'origine. ITA

[Photo Album]: African-American Family Photograph Album from "America's Oldest Negro Community"

Gouldtown, New Jersey, 1944. Very Good. Oblong quarto. Measuring 11" x 7". Cloth over flexible boards. The album cover is well-worn, about very good; the photos are near fine. The album contains approximately 85 gelatin silver photographs, most 3.5" x 4.75" and captioned. The first photograph features a preadolescent boy captioned: "Harold L. Valentine, Jr. Dec 25, 1934" in the margin; underneath is a pencil annotation reading, "Me." Valentine born in 1923, lived in Gouldtown until his death in 1977. Most of the photographs depict Valentine's family, home, and farm. Shown are the family's goats, horses, and chicken houses, family vehicles, a man and woman playing guitars, and Valentine's father in a white Coca-Cola uniform. Valentine served as a Tech Sergeant in the Army Air Force during World War II, and many of the final 30 photographs in the album show African-American men in uniform at home and on a military base.Gouldtown, which is located in New Jersey about 60 miles south of Philadelphia, was christened "America's Oldest Negro Community" by Ebony magazine in 1952. It traces its roots to the 1700s when a freedman named Benjamin Gould married a Finnish woman. Community lore holds that in the mid-1700s two mixed-race brothers, who were previously indentured servants, arrived from the West Indies, settled near the Goulds and began families of their own after purchasing the passage of two "mail-order-brides" from the Netherlands. Shortly thereafter, a mixed-race couple (white and Native American) arrived from Cape May. It was descendants of these four families that formed the core of Gouldtown's population well into the latter half of 20th Century. A fascinating and very uncommon book on the town Gouldtown: A Very Remarkable Settlement of Ancient Date outlines the town's history, illustrated with photographs of mostly light-skinned, mixed-race inhabitants. An important visual record of mid-20th Century African-American life in one of the most historic African-American enclaves.

        Photograph inscribed

1944. Signed. ROOSEVELT, Eleanor. Photograph inscribed. Washington, D.C., circa 1941. Vintage gelatin silver print (8 by 10 inches), inscribed on print recto. $2600.Vintage gelatin silver print of Eleanor Roosevelt, circa 1941, an official White House photographic portrait by Bachrach that features the First Lady in a black evening gown, seated before a desk that displays a framed photograph of FDR, inscribed by her in the upper right of print recto, ""To E— with affectionate good wishes, Eleanor Roosevelt,"" with Bachrach studio imprint and date of 1941 on lower right of print recto. This is a stately full-length photographic portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt that shows the First Lady seated in a black evening gown beneath the portrait of President James Monroe and before a desk displaying a photograph of FDR. The gentle silvering of the print in the lower left corner, typical of early gelatin silver prints, confirms the photograph was printed very near the date Roosevelt posed for this portrait. A fine inscribed photograph.

        The Little Prince

The First UK printing published by Heinemann in 1944. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just a hint of pushing at the spine ends and a light fade of colouring to the spine. No end papers as issued (This title was issued with both the end papers present and more commonly as here without. This was not an uncommon practice during war time production when paper was scarce). Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown which is obscured by the front wrapper flap. Light dustiness to the upper text block. Mild spotting to the pastedowns and half-title. The pages are very clean. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. Mild edge wear at the spine ends and a few small closed tears to the edges. A hint of toning to the spine. The wrapper artwork looks stunning in the removable Brodart archival cover. Stunning illustrations in colour and B/W by the author. A war time production and as such, the english edition is very scarce more-so with such attributes. An exceptional copy. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Komunisticni manifest. [i.e. "The Communist Manifesto"].

[Slovene Littoral, Printed for Agitprop, Presumably 1944]. Small4to. In the original stapled printed grey wrappers. Previous owner's name in light pencil to front wrapper and title-page. A few brown spots to title-page, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. 52 pp. ¶ Exceedingly rare Slovenian translation of the Communist Manifesto. This virtually unknown edition is not to be found in any bibliography nor on OCLC. The present edition of the Manifesto was printed and distributed by Agitprop, the Communist Party institution that controlled education, publishing, libraries and mass media from the end of World War II until 1952. Presumably the present publication was, if not the very first, then among the first publications made by Agitprop. Until the end of World War II Agitprop was essentially an underground movement whose goal was to pave the way for communism after the war. After the resistance in Slovenia started in summer 1941, Italian violence against the Slovene civilian population escalated and to counter the Communist-led insurgence, the Italians sponsored local anti-guerrilla units, formed mostly by the local conservative Catholic Slovene population that resented the revolutionary violence of the partisans. After the Italian armistice of September 1943, the Germans took over both the Province of Ljubljana and the Slovenian Littoral. They united the Slovene anti-Communist counter-insurgence into the Slovene Home Guard and appointed a puppet regime in the Province of Ljubljana. The anti-Nazi resistance however expanded, creating its own administrative structures as the basis for Slovene statehood within a new, federal and socialist Yugoslavia. In 1945, Yugoslavia was liberated by the underground resistance and soon became a socialist federation known as the People's Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Slovenia joined the federation as a constituent republic, led by its own pro-Communist leadership and Agitprop became the official mass media institution. Not in OCLC
