Tony Sarg's Treasure Book Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island & Rip VanWinkle

New York: B F Jay, 1942. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. First in Sarg's series of the Treasure Books. This volume contains shortened versions of Alice In Wonderland, Treasure Island & Rip Van Winkle with movables. Movable ship on the cover, Alice has a movable neck; the Queen's invitation is present, the Mad Hatter tips his hat; the black spot and the map are present, the apple barrel has its apples concealing Jim, and there is a net bag with three jewels in it; Rip's fish and fishing line are there also the American flag, and the movable scene in the rear cover. The moon face is present n the Rip Van Winkle tale; this is the only copy we have seen with the moon face present; typically the rubber in the 'face' dried out and shattered early on. This copy shows trace of wear and occasional light creasing of the movable bits, but overall it is a near fine copy, and rare with the moon face present. Montanaro p. 315.

[Photo Album]: Lawrence E. Ashbrook, The Kentucky Whittler

[Lexington, Kentucky, 1942. Near Fine. Oblong 64mo. Measuring 3.25" x 2". String-tied green stiff card wraps. 48 small black and white gelatin silver photographs, each measuring approximately 2.75" x 1.75". Mild handling wear and curling, images with small holes at left margins for string binding, overall very near fine.A diminutive photograph album compiled and annotated by folk-artist Lawrence E. Ashbrook (circa 1890-1953), also known as The Kentucky Whittler. Ashbrook worked and operated a roadside museum on his property approximately 14 miles south of Lexington, Kentucky on U.S. Highway 25 and traveled frequently around Kentucky and the Southern United States, selling his wooden sculptures and teaching the art of whittling to children. A likely-1930's advertisting postcard held in the University of Kentucky's John Jacob Niles Photographic Collection shows Ashbrook in front of a traveling display with the text: "The Kentucky Whittler / Will Visit Your School by Appoint- / ment. And Give a Demonstration in / Clay Modelling. L.E. Ashbrook - Lexington, Ky."We suspect this small but detailed album was likely used to promote these or similar demonstrations, or perhaps his museum. The album consists of images of The Whittler's work: figures, architectural models, busts, sculptures, vehicles, etc., with 32 of the photographs identified or otherwise annotated on the versos. Many of Ashbrook's figures and dioramas were known to incorporate mechanical elements as well, including an intricately carved skeleton shown here, titled: "Animated Skeleton / or Reckless Driver."Additionally, a series of 12 well-annotated prints detail his process on a figure of F.D.R. from start to finish, capturing images of Ashbrook selecting wood, rough-cutting it with a hatchet, fine carving, and the like. His work is described in one notation as "[...] at random no place in particular but all over in general." Further noted within this series is mention of its filming for a program called "Unusual Occupations," a long-running series of roughly 10-minute films released by Paramount Pictures between 1938-1949; The Whittler was featured in a 1943 episode. Suriving examples of Ashbrook's work are scarce and aside from the aforementioned image at Kentucky, visual or written records are not apparently held institutionally. A rich photographic archive of a noted folk artist in the American South, assembled and annotated by the artist himself.

Mi opinion sobre la Exposicion de Artistas Norteamericanos; illustrated with an original drawing

1942 - Illustrated with an original drawing by Torres Garcia. 1942. Montevideo. La Industrial Grafica Uruguaya. 4to. 19 pp. Paper browned, unsophisticated, very good. First edition, illustrated with an original ink drawing by Torres Garcia in the subject of his famous “Composicion constructiva”. The book is extremely rare, with only 8 institutional (Getty Research Institute, Columbia, Metropolitan Museum, Yale, University of California) holdings in the United States, one in Spain and one in Canada. Torres Garcia (1874 – 1949) was a Uruguayan artist, painter, sculptor, muralist, writer and art theorist, possibly Uruguay´s most celebrated 20th century artist; he is credited as a pioneer of the renaissance of modern classicism, and inventor of the Universal Constructivism "Torres-Garcia is one of the great figures of the art of this century" (Lassaigne, Jacques (1975). Torres-Garcia Constructions et Symbols. Paris: Musee d'art de la Ville de Paris. p. 8.); he was an avant gardist who influenced much of the South American modern art and many of it´s artists. He collaborated with many of the most relevant artists of Spain and France of the early 20th century, including Gaudi. This book is the produce of a conference of September 1941, where Torres Garcia analyses a recent exhibition of North American artists, and questions what the works reveal about the great problem of art in our hemisphere, an issue that preoccupied him, having lived in New York for a few years. He goes in depth about the works shown in the exhibition and criticizes them for being of unequal quality, also the themes, for being only thematically American and not structurally American. (María C. Gaztambide; Harper Montgomery, collaborator, International Center for the Arts of the Americas, MFAH, Houston, EEUU). “"Pop Art and conceptual art owe debts to Torres-Garcia, and he contributed to our belief in manipulative experience in childhood education Torres-Garcia's later work is laid out according to the complicated geometric rules of the Golden Section. He shared with the Argentine writer Borges a mystical fascination with symbols, numbers and coincidences, which led to quasi-mathematical compositions. The composition became a powerful structure of black lines on a neutral background or filed with flat colors. Set among the lines as if into boxes, are simplified linear designs symbolizing ideas: the clock as time, the compass as space, the star as the heavens, a hammer as human labor. Reality becomes a mechanistic clockwork of great ideas, a computer program of universal philosophy. In theory a computer could print out such a painting, but Torres-Garcia continually revised his own program to give the visual! ·effects he wanted, subordinating the symbolic to the aesthetic. he anticipated McLuhan's dictum that the medium is the message. For Torres-Garda, however, the structure was the medium, not the paint. During the late l930's he eliminated· the symbols and painted just the blocks, shaded like an elaborate stone wall. Comparisons with Inca walls are deceptive, for these painted structures owe more to the ideals of the Greek temples than to any American invention.” (Terence Grieder, TorresGarcia Father of Pop Art, Austin 1972).         Five on a Treasure Island

Hodder & Stoughton, London 1942 - First Impression dated August 1942. 8vo., 12 x 19cm, 191pp +1pp Enid Blyton titles. Publisher's light blue cloth boards with dark blue titles to front cover and spine. Publisher's original un-clipped dust jacket showing price of 5/- net to front flap. Front panel and front flap measure 8½" as called for. [Summerfield, p59] The boards are in at least very good condition. There are small bumps to the bottom fore edge corners, very light dust marking to the top and bottom edges and scattered light spotting marks to the cloth (caused by the very faint foxing spots on the verso of the dust jacket), though they are much lighter in nature than commonly encountered with this title. Internally, noting neat name and a short address on the first free endpaper, the book is in near fine condition, despite being printed on the war economy standard paper. There are a few light spots on the final leaf preceding the rear free endpaper and few very light spots to the half title and tile pages, otherwise it is remarkably clean. The original first edition dust jacket is in VG+ condition. The top and bottom edges of both flaps and the lower fore edge are dust darkened. The rear panel and spine are a little spotted and have general light soiling/marks and has two small closed tears of 8mm & 5mm at the top edge and of 2mm at the bottom edge. There are tiny chips at the tip of the spine head and a small amount of loss at the two corners adjacent to the lower panel, and a small 2 x 5mm chip at the top left corner of the front panel with a 1cm closed tear going down from it through the "F" of "FIVE", and one of 2mm at the bottom edge. The spine title remains an un-faded, deep red and so presents very well on the shelf. The jacket is in original unrestored condition. Over all, this is a great condition book in an unusually good jacket. If you would like any further information or images, please do not hesitate to ask.         Frontovoi iumor: pervyi sbornik krasnoarmeiskogo satiricheskogo tvorchestva [Front-line humor: first collection of Red Army satirical writing]

[Leningrad Region?]: politicheskoe upravlenie severo-zapadnogo fronta, 1942. Octavo (16.5 × 13.2 cm). Original staple-stitched pictorial wrappers; 45, [3] pp. Lightly worn and creased; spine some- what rubbed; still about very good. [An Anti-Nazi Alphabet for Front Soldiers]. A very scarce survival, this fully illustrated volume of anti-German anecdotes, ditties, rhymes, chastushki, and caricatures was compiled and produced by Red Army soldiers serving on the North-Western Front during World War II (presumably somewhere in the Leningrad Region or close to Finland). Of particular interest is a section titled "The Red-Army ABC": here each letter of the alphabet is illustrated with an anti-Nazi vignette, accompanied by a rhymed couplet that combines whimsy with a vicious hate of the fascist enemy. The entry for the final letter, "ia" (which means "I" in Russian), reads: Ia - vsei azbuke venets, ia - dlia Gitlera konets! ("I am the crown of the entire alphabet, I am Hitler's demise!" None of the authors and caricaturists (primarily one F. Sigal) appear to be known. The postal address for contributions is a military field post office of the North-Western Front. Rare: Not in KVK, OCLC; not held by the Russian State or National Library.
