The Atlantic Charter and the Four Freedoms

1942. Schoor, Jos.. Original painting, measuring 29 3/4 by 21 1/2 inches, matted and framed. The subject of the painting is the text of the Atlantic Charter, a joint declaration made by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill on August 14, 1941 that provided a framework for U.S. and British war, and post-war, goals. The Charter formed the basis for the charter of the modern United Nations. The text is written here in fine calligraphy with red and gold initials. The headings for the eight parts are in blue on a pink ground, and tiny versions of the flags for each of the Allies who signed the Charter are finely wrought in full color. At the end of the text, the title is flanked by excellent miniature portraits of Roosevelt and Churchill. Along the right side of the Charter are four paintings representing the Four Freedoms. In his State of the Union address on January 6, 1941, Roosevelt put forward four essential human rights that all people should enjoy: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. These fundamental freedoms were incorporated into the Atlantic Charter and entered the cultural zeitgeist, inspiring a wealth of artistic expression, most famously the series of paintings by Norman Rockwell. Arthur Szyk also produced a quadriptych of the Four Freedoms, and murals depicting the freedoms grace government and private buildings throughout the United States. This painting was completed a year before Rockwell's series appeared on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post and was executed by Jos. (possibly Joseph) Schoor, about whom we could find no information but who is certainly accomplished in his craft. The four richly detailed scenes show representations of the Four Freedoms: an orator enjoying the freedom of speech; a crowd entering a house of worship and exercising their freedom of religion; a farmer free from want gathering hay; and an allegorical female figure with a sword ready to defend the innocent from war, famine, and death, guarding the freedom from fear. The striking images feature strong lines and bold colors reminiscent of the paintings of Rockwell Kent and Edward Hopper. The Charter and Freedoms are bounded by a multi-colored triple border, also painted by Schoor. The whole has been professionally framed and matted and is in fine condition. Altogether a well-executed response to a world-changing vision of the future. (Frame measures 38 1/4 by 30 1/4 inches).

[Exhibition Catalog] First Papers of Surrealism. 14 October - 7 November 1942

New York: Coordinating Council of French Relief Societies, Inc, 1942. First Edition. Acclaimed catalog of the first major exhibition of Surrealist works in the United States, mounted by Andre Breton and Marcel Duchamp in a large Italianate mansion in mid-town Manhattan. David Hopkins (see "Tate Papers no. 22", http://www.tate.org.uk/research/publications/tate-papers/22) describes the exhibition's opening thus: ...wealthy art patrons and members of New York's cultural elite milled around, attempting to make what they could of the strange web or net in which they were caught, peering through it to look at the paintings, while a number of children wove in and out of the guests, eventually carving out a space for themselves in the central area of the exhibition. From all accounts the group of children, led by the eleven-year-old Carroll Janis (son of the art collector Sidney Janis), consisted of six boys dressed in baseball, basketball and football attire, who threw balls among themselves, and six girls who played skipping games, jacks and hopscotch. They were under strict orders from Duchamp to carry on playing throughout the event, and to explain, if questioned, that they were playing on Duchamp's instructions. Duchamp, incidentally, was nowhere to be seen. As was his custom he had decided not to attend the opening. Much like Duchamp's own contribution to the show -- his famous "Mile of String", which dominated the exhibit hall, partially obscuring many of the artworks -- his catalog, with its five die-cut "bullet" holes in the front wrapper, is itself a small masterpiece of Surrealism, utilizing a slightly bizarre (especially to the average wealthy art patron of 1942) layout with interspersed "portraits" of the artists and cut-up montage techniques, undercutting the conventional function of the exhibition catalog to showcase and promote the work of individual artists, emphasizing instead the event as self-referential spectacle. A somewhat ephemeral item in the trade; copies seem to appear irregularly and to disappear quickly. Small quarto (26.5cm x 18.5cm); pictorial, die-cut wrappers; [49]pp; illus. Covers slightly creased and soiled; brief signs of use; slight mustiness to contents as usual from coated paper; a solidly Very Good example.

        The World Crisis 1911-1918

London: Macmillan & Co LTD, 1942 831 pages. Inscribed by Winston Churchill to U.S.A. Major General, William Shaffer Key (Provost general marshal in Europe, 1942-June, 1943) on March 21, 1943. This date is significant as it was when Churchill broadcast his famous speech, "Post-War Councils on World Problems: A Four Year Plan for England." from London over BBC. Major Key passed away on January 5, 1959 in Oklahoma City. Full provenance can be provided for this book as it passed through a couple of hands prior to being acquired. Volume shows general light wear, including a quarter inch closed tear in the cloth at the heal, as well as Key's inked name stamp on second blank page and beneath half title. New end leaves have been bound in, along with the originals in order to tighten up this volume that showed a cracked top hinge when originally acquired. Volume is now tight and accessible. Inscription remains bright, clear, and bold. . Signed By Author: Inscribed. Abridged and Revised Edition. Cloth - Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.

        Cross Creek Cookery

Scribners, NY 1942 - "First published in 1942, ‘Cross Creek Cookery’ was compiled by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings at the request of readers who wanted to recreate the luscious meals described in ‘Cross Creek’ -- her famous memoir of life in a Florida hamlet. Lovers of old-fashioned, down-home cooking will treasure the recipes for Grits, Hush-Puppies, Florida Fried Fish, Orange Fluff, and Utterly Deadly Southern Pecan Pie. For more adventuresome palates, there are such unusual dishes as Minorcan Gopher Stew, Coot Surprise, Alligator-Tail Steak, Mayhaw Jelly, and Chef Huston's Cream of Peanut Soup. Spiced with delightful anecdotes and lore, ‘Cross Creek Cookery’ guides the reader through the rich culinary heritage of the deep tidal South with a loving regard for the rituals of cooking and eating. Anyone who longs for food - and writing - that warms the heart will find ample portions of both in this classic cookbook. [Pub. Info] Scribners" A"; desirable and collectible.         [Exhibitor's Annual] RKO Radio Pictures 1940 1941

Plastic spiral. Alligator on boards. . Fine. Lavish exhibitor's annual with splashy spreads on movies to be released in the upcoming year. Folio, 36 by 29 cm. Unpaginated, 27 leaves. Also with the original card stock envelope, whose preservation most definitely contributed to the near pristine condition of this copy of the Annual. The exhibitor's annual was a marketing tool used by the studio's to generate excitement among its exhibitors, who were a sense its most direct customers. To that end, no expense was spared for these publications. In this particular annual, the extravagance is manifest in its cover, in the flaps or movable pieces in a few of the advertisements, and the overall quality of the production. Nonetheless, because only a small number of these annuals were printed, combined with the ephemeral nature of the promotion, few copies survive. Because the annuals were about the movies on deck during the upcoming year, one finds titles and casts sometimes different than the final release, and there are projects scuttled and others spoken of in very general terms, such as "And a second adventure film with ___ yet to be announced." And this annual is no exception, with the most conspicuous example, the ad for Orson Welles in "'John Citizen, U.S.A.' and one other production". The former became, of course, "Citizen Kane", and the latter ended up becoming "The Magnificent Ambersons", which was released a year later, in 1942. Promised is also Cary Grant in "Passport to Life", to be directed by Garson Kanin, with the illustration and the title itself suggesing a melodrama of some sort. This film was never made. In its place, starring Grant and directed by Kanin, would be the screwball comedy, "My Favorite Wife". Other examples of unmade, or unreleased, movies are Anne Shirley in "I Married a Cheat", Charles Boyer in "Ariane Pretends", Ginger Rogers in "Two on an Island", Maureen O'Hara in "Three Girls and a Gob", and Ronald Colman in "One Production". Titles were to be changed for several Lupe Velez projects. The ad for "Kitty Foyle", the movie for which Ginger Rogers was to win her Oscar, has a flap which replicates the cover of the novel. Lifting the flap reveals a brochure reprint of a Life article about the novel. A similar book cover flap is used for "Sister Carrie", a movie that was not then made. (A Paramount version would be released in 1952 with the title "Carrie".) Movies touted, and made in a form that correlates generally with the promo, include "Too Many Girls", "The Devil and Miss Jones", "Men Against the Sky", "No, No, Nanette", "Mr and Mrs. Smith", "Tom, Dick and Harry", and on and on. Other elements of interest are pages devoted to the RKO producers, directors and writers. RKO also had an arrangement with Disney, and so touted are "Mr. Duck steps out" and other one reelers. With only the most superficial signs of wear, close to mint.

        The Masculine Dead Poems, 1938-1940

Prairie City, IL: Press of James A. Decker. Very Good. 1942. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. SIGNED EDITION. This book is in Very Good to Near Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. The endpapers have noticeable toning as does the title page. This copy has been signed by William Everson as William Everson (dated 1944) with an inscription, and signed again in 1962 as Brother Antoninus. This is the author's third book of poetry and is quite scarce. From Wikipedia: "Everson was an influential member of the San Francisco Renaissance in poetry and worked closely with Kenneth Rexroth during this period of his life. Throughout his life, Everson was a devotee of the work and lifestyle of poet Robinson Jeffers. Much of his work as a critic was done on Jeffers's poetry.Everson registered as an anarchist and a pacifist with his draft board, in compliance with the 1940 draft bill. In 1943, he was sent to a Civilian Public Service (CPS) work camp for conscientious objectors in Oregon.[1] In Camp Angel at Waldport, Oregon, with other poets, artists and actors such as Kemper Nomland, William Eshelman, Kermit Sheets, Glen Coffield, George Woodcock and Kenneth Patchen, he founded a fine-arts program in which the CPS men staged plays and poetry-readings and learned the craft of fine printing." ; Signed by Author .

        Now and On Earth

Modern Age, 1942 First Edition of the author's first book, in the scarce dust jacket. One of three hardcover titles issued under his name before moving to a career of writing paperback originals. Modern Age was a short-lived entity, very nearly a vanity press, and copies of any of their books have always verged on unattainability. "Now and on Earth" could be described as both autobiographical and Steinbeck-esque, but with Thompson's inimitable writing style fully formed. The story concerns a worker in a World War I aircraft factory who has a struggling family and few prospects, flirting constantly with temptations that could rid him of both. Very good in an unrestored dust jacket. A few tears and chips in a few pages in the rear of the book, not affecting any print. Housed in a custom-made quarter leather solander case.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good.

        THE BEATLES (Signed photograph)

INSCRIBED "To Carol" and signed by all four Beatles, on the verso of an early original black and white 8" x 10" of the Fab Four, taken on a street in London. Ringo's autograph in light brown ink, the others in bold dark blue. Framed in a museum quality frame, showing the autographs, an engraved biography of the Beatles and a handsome color photo of the Boys. The Beatles were certainly one of the most popular and successful musical groups of the 20th century. The group consisted of: Paul McCartney. b. June 18, 1942. Ringo Starr. b. Richard Starkey. July 7, 1940. John Lennon. b. October.9, 1940-d.1980 George Harrison. b. February 25, 1943-d.November 29, 2001. All were born in Liverpool, England or suburbs. They were awarded the M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) title by the Queen in 1964. Lennon and McCartney composed hundreds of songs and may were held in high regard by serious musicians. The Beatles will be remembered for their music. Lennon and McCartney wrote the words and music for the documentary "All This and World War II" (1976), and McCartney composed songs for several films, notably "Live and Let Die" (1973). It is truly hard to locate anything signed by all four together. All our autographs are unconditionally guaranteed to be authentic.
