        Silver Wings

Alfred A. Knopf 1941 (c.1930), New York - [a good solid clean copy, some light shelfwear and minor bumping at bottom corners; the jacket, unfortunately, is hideously scarred right in the middle of the front panel, with a curving surface-peeled area measuring a little more than 5 inches top-to-bottom and about 1-1/4 inches at its widest point (more or less in the shape of South Vietnam, if that helps to visualize it), plus another dime-size surface scar (probably from a removed price sticker) at upper right-hand corner, just catching the "R" in "SILVER"; there's some additional edgewear and a few small tears, but the big scar really trumps everything else -- honestly, it's enough to make you cry, especially considering the rarity of this particular jacket]. Very scarce collection of World War I aviation stories (all of which, with one exception, were first published in Boys' Life), by this hard-boiled writer, who at the time of its first issue in 1930 was on the threshold of breaking out of the pages of "Black Mask" and other pulps into the realm of hardcover fiction with "Green Ice." Whitfield was an associate (read: drinking buddy) of Dashiell Hammett, and although he was "of the school," his work never did much more than brush up against that of such masters as Hammett and Chandler, quality-wise. Still, his aviation stories, as E.R. Hagemann has noted, "have a verisimilitude about them not always found in the pulps," due to Whitfield's own experiences as a pilot in the war (although by William F. Nolan's account his actual combat exploits were very limited). At one point, he was touted by an enthusiastic pulp magazine editor as "America's foremost writer of aviation fight stories," which might have been both a tad hyperbolic and yet altogether true. (Who would the competition have been, exactly?) The jacket blurb makes this sound like a novel ("a fast-moving story which describes the war crossing of a group of pilots on a transport"), but in fact there are a dozen more-or-less self-contained stories, divided into three sections: Wings of War; Wings of the Mail; Wings of Transport. (One of the most interesting is "The Camera Shoot," dealing with the use of motion-picture cameras (mounted in place of guns) at an aerial combat training school in France.) By the way, the book also features very stylized endpaper illustrations, which I believe are identical to those in the first edition. [Another couple of words about the horrible jacket-scar: it seems to me, due to the patterned design of the jacket illustration, that some talented graphic artist-type (definitely not me!) could Photoshop this jacket and digitally "fill in" the missing parts, thus creating quite a presentable restoration/facsimile. Whether this could be in any way the basis for an actual restoration of the original jacket, I couldn't say.] [Attributes: Hard Cover]

3rd The King's Own Hussars. Regimental Journal. 1941.

North Africa: For the Regiment in the field,, 1941. Landscape octavo (165 × 183 mm), wire-stitched in original tape-backed self-wraps, mimeographed title to the front wrap. 113 pages of text, rectos only, approximately 40,000 words. 11 original photographs (various formats between 82 × 83 and 976 × 134 mm) corner mounted. Wraps worn, soiled and spotted, professionally restored and stabilised, text-block toned. Overall a good copy. An unpublished mimeographed typescript, "This Edition is Limited to 12 Copies. This is No. 1 - NOT TO BE PUBLISHED", and all the more valuable as no dedicated history of the regiment's activities in World War II was produced. No other copy traced. Begins with an cursory history of the early months of the war when the 3rd Hussars were in England, including false reports that it was to be sent to Norway or to join the BEF in France. In the event they sailed for the Middle East in August 1940, participating in the campaign in the Libyan Desert in 1941, before transferring to Crete, all of which the "journal" covers in detail. This is very much a "family" record including not only operational records for each Squadron, but also including more personal material - for example a record of children born to officers and men of the regiment 1940-1, a roll of the killed and missing, and a number of poems including an account of The Retreat to Tobruk in Rubai' quatrains - which combine to produce a highly immediate, atmospheric record of events, of greater value and far more engaging than standard regimental histories. The apparently otherwise unpublished photos. include views of the desert terrain, vehicles, and named officers, including a group portrait featuring Roy Farran, later of SAS fame. Farran was attached to the regiment throughout the period covered in this volume, being wounded and captured during the attempt to retake Galatas on Crete, described here. Of desperately fragile construction, and rather service-worn, nevertheless pleasing and genuinely scarce.

        Managerial Revolution

1941. First Edition . BURNHAM, James. The Managerial Revolutions. What Is Happening in the World. New York: John Day, (1941). Octavo, original orange cloth, original dust jacket. $3600.First edition of this work warning about the end of the capitalism and the rise of bureaucracy in the form of despotic rule by managers. This book is a warning about managers, framing World War II not as a war about fascism, but rather as a war about the managerial society. The question Burnham presents is whether the United States has reached the end of capitalism and whether the United States will ultimately succumb to rule by managers. The threat, he argues, is that control is becoming divorced from access—in other words, property rights increasingly are being divided between owners and management. Capitalism cannot survive in a world in which owners are functionally unable to use that which they own. Burnham intends this volume to warn, but offers no solutions, other than a total realignment of thought. Book fine, scarce dust jacket nearly so.

The Defenders of Tobruk: Special number issued on the occasion of Delivering The Fortress.

Limited edition, bound with treasury tag in top left corner, 70 pages, each 340 by 215 mm. This copy is numbered 66. Printed on coarse textured paper. Text in English and Polish. Numerous articles, poems and letters by members of the garrison, the majority being from the Polish Carpathian Brigade, with c.40 superb illustrations, some full page. William Forrest's copy, with an inscription from the editor to him at the head of the title page. Given the conditions under which the magazine must have been produced the production values are exceptional, especially the use of different typefaces for the item headings. Rommel's victories in 1941 failed to include Tobruk. He tried three times to take the city and it became a cause celebre. Churchill signalled General Morshead the officer commanding 'The whole Empire is watching your steadfast and spirited defence of this important outpost of Egypt with gratitude and admiration.' Towards the end of 1941 the Australian troops holding Tobruk were partially replaced by British troops and the Polish Carpathian Brigade. The garrison broke out of the city on the night of 26 November and linked up wth the 2nd New Zealand Division. William Forrest was one of the last of the great Fleet Street foreign correspondents; the final echo from that school of remarkable reporters who, along with Hemingway, Arthur Koestler and company, covered the Spanish Civil War with pencils and notebooks and cables filed from postal depots under shell-fire, long before the electronic revolution brought warfare into our sitting rooms. (Independent - obituary). He covered many of the most important events of the war in Europe and North Africa and was actually wounded at Tobruk. A rare and important document which survives in fine condition, with just a few small chips to the covers.

        Out of the Night

New York: Alliance Book Corporation, 1941. First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. Inscribed by the author, "To Polly and June _____ with admiration and cordial fond wishes from Jan Valtin June 1, 1941." A bestseller in 1941, described as". . . full of sensational revelations and interspersed with episodes of daring, of desperate conflict, of torture, and of ruthless conspiracy . . . It is, first of all, an autobiography the like of which has seldom been." The son of a seafaring father, Richard Julius Herman Krebs, a.k.a. Jan Valtin, came of age as a bicycle messenger during a maritime rebellion. His life as an intimate insider account of the dramatic events of 1920's and 1930s, where he rose both within the ranks of the Communist Party and on the Gestapo hit list. Known for his honesty and incredible memory, Krebs dedicated his life to the Communist Party, rising to a position as head of maritime, organizing worldwide for the Comintern, only to flee the Party and Europe to evade his own comrade's attempts to kill him. As a professional revolutionary, agitator, spy and would-be assassin, Krebs traveled the globe from Germany to China, India to Sierra Leon, Moscow to the United States where a botched assassination attempt landed him a stint in San Quentin. From his spellbinding account of artful deception to gain release from a Nazi prison and his work as a double-agent within the Gestapo, to his vivid depiction of a Communist Party fraught with intrigue and subterfuge, Krebs gives an unflinching portrayal of the internal machinations of both parties. Writing at age 36 under the name Jan Valtin, Krebs lays bare a young life filled with idealism and devotion—disillusionment and loss—in a world full of revolutionary promise gone immeasurably wrong."An exciting, real book without a trace of unnecessary melodrama" (H.G.Wells).

        [Photo Album Pages]: Oberlin College

Oberlin, Ohio. 1941. Eleven loose sheets removed from a photo album, all measuring 9" x 12". A collection of 73 black and white and sepia toned photographs in various sizes from 2" x 3" to 3.5" x 9", with captions. Slight creasing and small tears else, near fine. Removed pages from a girl's college photo album from 1941 while attending Oberlin College. The assemblage begins in the girl's dorm with a group of friends reading on a bed with captioned nicknames like "Augsie," and "Fish." College sports are heavily featured including action scenes of archery, fencing, swimming, basketball games, baseball, and two panoramas of a football game. The year 1941 marked the 50th anniversary of the football program and it was documented here with photos of the speeches and the marching band. One section has individual head shots of the girls with commentary like "Barb and our dream man," under one that featured a poster of Frank Sinatra. A cool looking woman named "Bets" sits at a desk in a dorm room smoking, the picture of a budding fashionista. A nice compilation of Oberlin life in the 1940s. .

Near fine condition in the slightly worn dustwrapper, complete as issued, in the original publisher's plain slipcase.
