The Military Geography of Isfahan [in Farsi].

Tehran, Government Printing House, [1941]. 4to. Original printed wrappers; pp. [ii], 124, [2], three folding lithographic maps, printed in up to three colours; light wear to spine, otherwise near fine. Extremely rare first edition of this illustrated Iranian military intelligence handbook of the Central Iranian of Isfahan, which presents 'besides a thorough physical topography, an exhaustive and admirable fund of information on the economic, social and political peculiarities' (M. Reza Ghods, The Rise and Fall of General Razmara, in: Middle Eastern Studies Vol. 29, No.1 (Jan., 1993), pp. 22-35). The book goes into much detail when it comes to ethnography and tribal structures, even naming single clans and families. The historical background is the Second World War, when Iran tried - successfully - to remain neutral. However, there was a real possibility to be sucked into the war or be invaded by the British Empire, German troops, or, despite the non aggression pact signed with Lenin, by the Soviet Union. Razmara (1901-1951) was born in Tehran and studied at the military academy of Saint-Cyr in France and after a successful military career, including head of Military Intelligence and three-times joint Chief-of Staff, he eventually became Prime Minister in 1950.

Original photographs of Prime Minister Churchill on board H.M.S. The Prince of Wales

1941 - 6 large (50.5 x 40.5cm approx) original photographs mounted on card of Sir Winston Churchill on board H. M. S. The Prince of Wales accompanied by the heads of the armed forces (First Sea Lord Admiral of the Fleet Dudley Pound; Chief of the Imperial Staff, Field Marshall John Dill; and Air Marshall Wilfred Freeman), one of the photographs signed beneath the lower right-hand corner by Sir Winston Churchill. A fine series of photographs depicting Churchill with his leading military officers setting out to meet President Roosevelt for the first time - a meeting that was to bring the United States and Great Britain closer together and would help change the course of the War. In July 1940 newly appointed Prime Minister Churchill requested help from President Roosevelt, after Britain had sustained the loss of 11 destroyers to the German Navy over a 10-day period. Roosevelt responded by exchanging 50 destroyers for 99-year leases on British bases in the Caribbean and Newfoundland. A major foreign policy debate erupted over whether the United States should aid Great Britain or maintain strict neutrality. In the 1940 presidential election campaign Roosevelt promised to keep America out of the war. He stated, "I have said this before, but I shall say it again and again and again; your boys are not going to be sent into any foreign wars." Nevertheless, FDR wanted to support Britain and believed the United States should serve as a "great arsenal of democracy." Churchill pleaded "Give us the tools and we'll finish the job." In January 1941, following up on his campaign pledge and the prime minister's appeal for arms, Roosevelt proposed to Congress a new military aid bill. The plan was to "lend-lease or otherwise dispose of arms" and other supplies needed by any country whose security was vital to the defence of the United States. This Lend-Lease Act, proposed by FDR in January 1941 and passed by Congress in March, went a long way toward solving the concerns of both Great Britain's desperate need for supplies and America's desire to appear neutral. Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during the debate over lend-lease, "We are buying . . . not lending. We are buying our own security while we prepare. By our delay during the past six years, while Germany was preparing, we find ourselves unprepared and unarmed, facing a thoroughly prepared and armed potential enemy." In August 1941, Roosevelt and Churchill met for the first of nine face-to-face conferences) during the war. The four-day meeting aboard a ship anchored off the coast of Newfoundland at Argentia Bay was devoted to an agreement on war aims and a vision for the future. The document created at this meeting was the Atlantic Charter, an agreement on war aims between besieged Great Britain and the neutral United States. The charter set forth the concepts of self-determination, end to colonialism, freedom of the seas, and the improvement of living and working conditions for all people. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket, unclipped ($2.50), slightly chipped at head and tail, creased closed tear at top of back panel, lightly worn along edges. Former owner's name written on front free endpaper.Burnham was a one-time Trotskyist who officially rejected dialectical materialism not long before publishing this book, an acclaimed critique of the worldwide authoritarianism that precipitated WWII. Burnham along with many other ex-communists like Daniel Bell and Dwight Macdonald would help inluence mainstream American cold war thought immensely, forming a consensus view that was mistrustful of totalitarianism in all forms, interventionist, capitalist, and much more pragmatic than it has generally been given credit for being.         WWII SOVIET SATIRICAL MAGAZINE: [KROKODIL].

No. 12: Large 4°, 16 pp. text and illustrations in black and red, stapled (Very Good, slightly age-toned, tiny holes in margins and in spine). No. 13: Large 4°, 8 pp. text and illustrations in black, yellow and red, stapled (Very Good, slightly age-toned, tiny tears in margins and in spine). - Moscow: Pravda, June 28 and July 4, 1941. These are first two WWII editions of an illustrated Soviet satirical magazine Krokodil, published only days after Hitler's invasion on the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. - The pair of richly illustrated Soviet satirical magazines Krokodil, were published on June 28, and July 4, 1941, only days after the Hitler’s invasion on the Soviet Union. The title pages and illustrations in the magazines show Soviet soldiers defeating Germans, who are presented as weaklings and cowards, they mock German politics and politicians, and present the strength of the Soviet army. Political magazine Krokodil - The first issue of the magazine was published on June 4, 1922, by the publishing house Rabotschaja Gazeta and from 1932 on by the Pravda publishing house, which lifted Krokodil to the most important political satirical magazine in the Soviet Union. The magazine was mostly mocking the foreign politics, the imperialisms and political opponents of the Soviet Union, such as Leon Trotsky. Krokodil was also known for its strong anti-Semitic tone. With its extreme pro-Soviet character, the magazine could survive for over eighty years in a country, which had a strong censorship over caricatures and satirical magazines. Until 1932 the magazine was published every month, and after that three times per month. The last magazine was published in 2008. With its extreme pro-Soviet character, the magazine could survive for 86 years in a country, which had a strong censorship over caricatures and satirical magazines. The earlier editions of Krokodil only rarely appear on the market. We could only trace separate editions in institutions worldwide.

The Beautiful People, Sweeney in the Trees and Across the Board on Tomorrow Morning - Three Plays

Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York., 1941. First edition. Octavo. 275 pages.Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author to Gene Kelly and Betsy Blair: "To Gene & Betsy - Sweeney & St. Agnes - with all the good wishes of Bill - 7 Nov 1941". Betsy Blair played the role of Agnes Webster in The Beautiful People and, at the time of the inscription, Gene Kelly was tentatively negotiating for the leading role in a future production of Sweeney in the Trees. Kelly had already made his big break, playing the role of Harry the Hoofer in Saroyan's The Time of Your Life. ”That Saroyan is out of the world," he said. "He's a big bruiser, as regular as they come, and looks like a contented iceman. You'd never expect such beautiful prose from such a guy.” It is known that when Kelly went to see a try-out of the play he argued with Saroyan over the direction "until both of them were blue in the face". Saroyan then offered Kelly the role but for whatever reason this never materialised.Spine a bit faded. Small stain on upper cover. Very good indeed in very good indeed, slightly marked dustwrapper a little rubbed at edges.

WWII PRISON CAMP ART: OFLAG XIIIB, NÜRNBERG 1941. BOX 6. BARAKA 89

Oflag VIIIB, Nürnberg . 1941 - Coloured ink-drawing, autographs in different coloured pens (Very Good, small tears in margins) 30 x 21 cm (11.8 x 8.2 inches). A stunning document with a humoresque drawing, made in the German prison camp Oflag XIII - B, during WWII by Serbian imprisoned officers. - This unique and unusual drawing with a list of autographs was made in the German prison camp Oflag XIII-B during WWII by imprisoned Serbian officers. The drawing, surrounded by a barbwire and signed by one of the inmates, ?or?e ?urkovi?, shows a prison cell with sleeping inmates, with one of them yelling "Close the doooors!!!" (???????? ???????!!!). The document is signed by 16 inmates, with their names and addresses, most of them in Belgrade. Oflag XIII-B was a German Army World War II prisoner-of-war camp for officers, originally set in the Langwasser district of Nuremberg until April 1943, when it was moved to Hammelburg in Bavaria. Oflag XIII-B, was founded in May 1941, for Yugoslavian officers, predominantly Serbs captured in the Balkans Campaign. By April 1943 the prison cam housed at least at least 3,000 Serbian officers. Many were members of the Yugoslavian General Staff, some of whom had been POWs in Germany during the First World War. In the last months of the war, at the beginning of 1945, American POWs, captured during the Battle of the Bulge and in the North Africa Campaign, were brought to a separate department of Oflag XIII-B. As the conditions for the American POWs were very poor, Serbian prisoners shared their slightly larger rations with them, until the liberation of the camp on April 6, 1945, after two weeks of fierce fights between the Allies and Germans for the camp.

Collection of autographs by northern European political and military leaders of WWII: Carl Gustav Fleischer, Risto Ryti, Gustaf Mannerheim, and Edward Raczynski.

London and Helsinki, 1940-1941. - 4 sets of autographs laid down to album leaves, including original envelopes, numerous photo reproductions and newspaper clippings. Interesting wartime collection, assembled by the young Uruguayan nobleman Alejandro Zorrilla de San Martin (1909-87; Foreign Affairs Minister from 1963 to 1965 and grandson of José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín, the National Poet of Uruguay) by direct application. The Norwegian general Carl G. Fleischer (1883-1942) sends "mes meilleurs voeux pour vos et votre pays" from his London exile on 10 April 1941. The clipped photo reproduction shows the Polish Prime Minister in Exile, Sikorski, conferring upon Fleischer the "Virtuti Militari" medal for bravery. A year later, the strong-headed Fleischer (the first land commander to win a major victory against Germany in WWII) took his own life after being bypassed for the post of commander-in-chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces. - The Finnish statesman Risto Ryti (1889-1956) signs only his name and the date (6 March 1941). Ryti served as Prime Minister during the Winter War; later he served as President during the Continuation War. Having signed the Ryti–Ribbentrop Agreement in 1944, he was the main defendant in the Finnish War-responsibility trials. His countryman, the statesman and officer Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (1867-1951), signs his surname (1940, Helsingfors), adding a caption to the image provided by Zorrilla: "Les dernières manoevres de l'armée finlandise avant la guerre 1939-40". The diplomat Edward Raczynski (1891-1993) initials a 5-line dedication. - Also includes a 3½-page letter from Scotland (with inscribed photograph) by the Polish army captain Moscicki, to whom Zorrilla had written after wrongly identifying him as former president Ignacy Moscicki (actually in Switzerland).       - The archive comprises: 410 filing cards (11.5 x 17.5cm) with notes in Spanish in ink and pencil, many on both sides, interspersed with sketches of the art objects discussed, arranged under locations setting out the compiler’s conclusions of his detailed studies, intended for publication; 636 negatives with 240 positives in 67 envelopes of which 60 give precise locations of where the images were taken by a Voigtländer Brillant camera; 256 photographs (11 enlarged) in slip reference files classified under these locations: Iguarassú, Olinda, Parana, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salva, Santos, Sao Paulo, Tirandentes. The Argentine art historian Olivier was commissioned by his government to study Luso-Brazilian influences in interior design and architecture in the region of the River Plate. He travelled to Brazil between 1935 and 1941 to study the colonial buildings and arts of Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco. His article ‘ Historia del mueble colonial’ (in Rosalinda, Buenos Aires, Mar.-Oct.1939) is described by Mario Jose Buschiazzo (Bibliografia de arte colonial argentino, B.A.1947) as ‘the most serious and thorough study of colonial furniture. He begins with Spanish furniture and then continues with that of the ‘conquistadores’, the household furniture of the missions, 18th century French influences, Portuguese furniture in the River Plate region and the Jesuit artisans.’ The results of Olivier’s studies in Brazil were published in 1942 in the Memoria of the Comision Nacional de Cultura, and his conclusions led to a series of lectures citing examples of how Luso-Brazilian characteristics had affected the artistic styles of the River Plate. To illustrate his work Olivier assiduously photographed many buildings and furniture of the colonial period. The chief glory of the churches are their sacristies, their Portuguese and Spanish paintings and the baroque furniture copied in the dark woods of Brazil from European models, often influenced by trade relations with the Orient (Indian or Chinese).
