        Winston S. Churchill Signed Photograph.

Signed photograph of Prime Minister Winston Churchill with his right hand in his pocket. Boldly signed, "Winston S. Churchill, 1941", affixed to its original studio mount. Accompanied by a letter from Churchill's personal secretary R. E. K. Hill, dated July 3, 1941, addressed Mrs. Stapleton, "I am now returning to you the photograph of Mr. Churchill, which he was glad to autograph for your husband's ship, H.M.S. 'Amaranthus.' Nicholas Stapleton commanded HMS Amaranthus from January to August 1941. American photographer Edward Steichen took this photo of Churchill in 1932 for Vanity Fair magazine, with the image later serving as the dust jacket photograph for While England Slept in 1938, the American edition of Churchill's Arms and the Covenant. Authorized copies of this print were produced for sale by Harrods after Churchill ascended to the Prime Ministership in 1940. The photograph measures 5.75 inches by 7.75 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 18 inches by 21 inches. An exceptional signed portrait with noted provenance. Winston S. Churchill was a British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He was also an officer in the British Army, a non-academic historian, a writer and an artist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his overall, lifetime body of work. In 1963, he was the first of only eight people to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. Churchill was born into the family of the Dukes of Marlborough, a branch of the Spencer family. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, the Anglo-Sudan War, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and wrote books about his campaigns. At the forefront of politics for fifty years, he held many political and cabinet positions. Before the First World War, he served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of Asquith's Liberal government. During the war, he continued as First Lord of the Admiralty until the Gallipoli Campaign caused his departure from government. He then briefly resumed active army service on the Western Front as commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He returned to government under Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, then Secretary of State for the Colonies. After two years out of Parliament, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Baldwin's Conservative government of 1924-1929, controversially returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK economy. Out of office and politically "in the wilderness" during the 1930s because of his opposition to increased home rule for India and his resistance to the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII, Churchill took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany and in campaigning for rearmament. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was again appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on 10 May 1940, Churchill became Prime Minister. His speeches and radio broadcasts helped inspire British resistance, especially during the difficult days of 1940-41 when the British Commonwealth and Empire stood almost alone in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. He led Britain as Prime Minister until victory over Nazi Germany had been secured. After the Conservative Party suffered an unexpected defeat in the 1945 general election, he became Leader of the Opposition to the Labour Government. He publicly warned of an "Iron Curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe and promoted European unity. After winning the 1951 election, Churchill again became Prime Minister. His second term was preoccupied by foreign affairs, including the Malayan Emergency, Mau Mau Uprising, Korean War, and a UK-backed coup d'etat in Iran. Domestically his government laid great emphasis on house-building. Churchill suffered a serious stroke in 1953 and retired as Prime Minister in 1955, although he remained a Member of Parliament until 1964. Upon his death aged ninety in 1965, Elizabeth II granted him the honor of a state funeral, which saw one of the largest assemblies of world statesmen in history.

NUMBER ONE OF 63 COPIES SIGNED BY WALL and marked PP (Printer's Proof) on colophon, and with etched dedication to Natalie Williams "of Texas, in whose home surrounded by etchings & books our inspiration came to do this book." Bernhardt Wall was born in Buffalo, New York on Dec. 30, 1872. He studied at the Buffalo Art Student's League then moved on to study in New York under Henry Reuterdahl and also apprenticed under William Auerbach-Levy. Wall began a career as a lithographic illustrator in 1889 working primarily as a commercial artist in New York and Buffalo. He soon became known as the "Postcard King" and designed over 5,000 comic cards. The year1915 marked a defining point in Wall's artistic career. Wall visited Colorado, Nevada and California making etchings of Indians, cowboys and major cities which were later published in a portfolio entitled, "Under Western Skies." These proved to be very successful and the artist shortly thereafter moved to California permanently. Wall continued to produce many fine etchings of the American West and by 1930 had also become a much respected historian of the region. Bernhardt Wall was unique in that he not only drew the etchings for his books, but he also printed and bound them. His books are in libraries and universities around the world including the British Museum, Library of Congress, the libraries of Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Brown Universities. His works were also in the private collections of J. P. Morgan, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Henry C. Frick and Dr. N.C. Mathewson. Wall etched three sitting presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Taft, and Henry Coolidge. Other prominent individuals etched by Wall include Sam Houston, Mark Twain, Thomas A. Edison, Abraham Lincoln, and Andrew Jackson. Artist and historian, Bernhardt Wall (1872-1956) was a pioneer etcher and producer of fine press books who treated a vast array of subjects, including Texas and the Southwest. Historians of fine press printing have compared him to William Blake. This collection of Wall's scrapbooks, publications, and correspondence was built by collector Natalie Williams of Marshall, Texas.

        MIND YOUR HEAD

Bourke-White, Margaret. Original silver gelatin photograph of Bourke-White and Erskine Caldwell each in Russian fur hats, beneath a sign stating "MIND YOUR HEAD." Image size 4 x 5 1/2 inches [10.2 x 14 cm.] The photo is mounted on the front of a folded card stock with this printed caption "...your heart, and your pocketbook," White Sea, 1941. The inside of the card reads "1942, Horseplay Hill, Darien, Connecticut." Slightest of foxing on card, else very good; the photo is bright. A well-known self-portrait by Bourke-White, made aboard ship after leaving the Soviet Union in 1941. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Bourke-White and Caldwell decided to separate, with Caldwell going to Hollywood and Bourke-White joining the war effort; they divorced in 1942. The photo is reproduced on p. 187 of Bourke-White's PORTRAIT OF MYSELF, but the printed legend on this card is unique - given the sarcastic tone, it is presumed that Bourke-White sent this card to her intimates to announce her divorce.

The Military Geography of the Caspian Sea [in Farsi].

Tehran, Government Printing House, [1941]. 4to. Original red cloth, lettered in gilt, ornamented in blind, wire-stitched; pp. [iv], 54, 31, [3], a few photographic illustrations in the text, 4 folding lithographic maps in rear pocket; cloth a little rubbed, one map with repaired tears at folds; presentation inscription by the author on front fly-leaf. Extremely rare first edition of this illustrated Iranian military intelligence handbook on the Caspian Sea, which presents 'besides a thorough physical topography, an exhaustive and admirable fund of information on the economic, social and political peculiarities' (M. Reza Ghods, The Rise and Fall of General Razmara, in: Middle Eastern Studies Vol. 29, No.1 (Jan., 1993), pp. 22-35). The historical background is the Second World War, when Iran tried - successfully - to remain neutral. However, there was a real possibility to be sucked into the war or be invaded by the British Empire, German troops, or, despite the non aggression pact signed with Lenin, by the Soviet Union. Razmara (1901-1951) was born in Tehran and studied at the military academy of Saint-Cyr in France and after a successful military career, including head of Military Intelligence and three-times joint Chief-of Staff, he eventually became Prime Minister in 1950. - One map, measuring 110 by 66 cm showes the entire Caspian Sea and surroundings, the others focus on Mazandaran on the south coast and Golistan in the south-east. We can currently offer three more volumes in this series of handbooks of Iranian military geography by Razmara, not signed and in original wrappers.

Original photographs of Prime Minister Churchill on board H.M.S. The Prince of Wales

1941 - 6 large (50.5 x 40.5cm approx) original photographs mounted on card of Sir Winston Churchill on board H. M. S. The Prince of Wales accompanied by the heads of the armed forces (First Sea Lord Admiral of the Fleet Dudley Pound; Chief of the Imperial Staff, Field Marshall John Dill; and Air Marshall Wilfred Freeman), one of the photographs signed beneath the lower right-hand corner by Sir Winston Churchill. A fine series of photographs depicting Churchill with his leading military officers setting out to meet President Roosevelt for the first time - a meeting that was to bring the United States and Great Britain closer together and would help change the course of the War. In July 1940 newly appointed Prime Minister Churchill requested help from President Roosevelt, after Britain had sustained the loss of 11 destroyers to the German Navy over a 10-day period. Roosevelt responded by exchanging 50 destroyers for 99-year leases on British bases in the Caribbean and Newfoundland. A major foreign policy debate erupted over whether the United States should aid Great Britain or maintain strict neutrality. In the 1940 presidential election campaign Roosevelt promised to keep America out of the war. He stated, "I have said this before, but I shall say it again and again and again; your boys are not going to be sent into any foreign wars." Nevertheless, FDR wanted to support Britain and believed the United States should serve as a "great arsenal of democracy." Churchill pleaded "Give us the tools and we'll finish the job." In January 1941, following up on his campaign pledge and the prime minister's appeal for arms, Roosevelt proposed to Congress a new military aid bill. The plan was to "lend-lease or otherwise dispose of arms" and other supplies needed by any country whose security was vital to the defence of the United States. This Lend-Lease Act, proposed by FDR in January 1941 and passed by Congress in March, went a long way toward solving the concerns of both Great Britain's desperate need for supplies and America's desire to appear neutral. Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during the debate over lend-lease, "We are buying . . . not lending. We are buying our own security while we prepare. By our delay during the past six years, while Germany was preparing, we find ourselves unprepared and unarmed, facing a thoroughly prepared and armed potential enemy." In August 1941, Roosevelt and Churchill met for the first of nine face-to-face conferences) during the war. The four-day meeting aboard a ship anchored off the coast of Newfoundland at Argentia Bay was devoted to an agreement on war aims and a vision for the future. The document created at this meeting was the Atlantic Charter, an agreement on war aims between besieged Great Britain and the neutral United States. The charter set forth the concepts of self-determination, end to colonialism, freedom of the seas, and the improvement of living and working conditions for all people. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Burnham along with many other ex-communists like Daniel Bell and Dwight Macdonald would help inluence mainstream American cold war thought immensely, forming a consensus view that was mistrustful of totalitarianism in all forms, interventionist, capitalist, and much more pragmatic than it has generally been given credit for being.         WWII SOVIET SATIRICAL MAGAZINE: [KROKODIL].

No. 12: Large 4°, 16 pp. text and illustrations in black and red, stapled (Very Good, slightly age-toned, tiny holes in margins and in spine). No. 13: Large 4°, 8 pp. text and illustrations in black, yellow and red, stapled (Very Good, slightly age-toned, tiny tears in margins and in spine). - Moscow: Pravda, June 28 and July 4, 1941. These are first two WWII editions of an illustrated Soviet satirical magazine Krokodil, published only days after Hitler's invasion on the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. - The pair of richly illustrated Soviet satirical magazines Krokodil, were published on June 28, and July 4, 1941, only days after the Hitler’s invasion on the Soviet Union. The title pages and illustrations in the magazines show Soviet soldiers defeating Germans, who are presented as weaklings and cowards, they mock German politics and politicians, and present the strength of the Soviet army. Political magazine Krokodil - The first issue of the magazine was published on June 4, 1922, by the publishing house Rabotschaja Gazeta and from 1932 on by the Pravda publishing house, which lifted Krokodil to the most important political satirical magazine in the Soviet Union. The magazine was mostly mocking the foreign politics, the imperialisms and political opponents of the Soviet Union, such as Leon Trotsky. Krokodil was also known for its strong anti-Semitic tone. With its extreme pro-Soviet character, the magazine could survive for over eighty years in a country, which had a strong censorship over caricatures and satirical magazines. Until 1932 the magazine was published every month, and after that three times per month. The last magazine was published in 2008. With its extreme pro-Soviet character, the magazine could survive for 86 years in a country, which had a strong censorship over caricatures and satirical magazines. The earlier editions of Krokodil only rarely appear on the market. We could only trace separate editions in institutions worldwide.

The Beautiful People, Sweeney in the Trees and Across the Board on Tomorrow Morning - Three Plays

Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York., 1941. First edition. Octavo. 275 pages.Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author to Gene Kelly and Betsy Blair: "To Gene & Betsy - Sweeney & St. Agnes - with all the good wishes of Bill - 7 Nov 1941". Betsy Blair played the role of Agnes Webster in The Beautiful People and, at the time of the inscription, Gene Kelly was tentatively negotiating for the leading role in a future production of Sweeney in the Trees. Kelly had already made his big break, playing the role of Harry the Hoofer in Saroyan's The Time of Your Life. ”That Saroyan is out of the world," he said. "He's a big bruiser, as regular as they come, and looks like a contented iceman. You'd never expect such beautiful prose from such a guy.” It is known that when Kelly went to see a try-out of the play he argued with Saroyan over the direction "until both of them were blue in the face". Saroyan then offered Kelly the role but for whatever reason this never materialised.Spine a bit faded. Small stain on upper cover. Very good indeed in very good indeed, slightly marked dustwrapper a little rubbed at edges.

WWII PRISON CAMP ART: OFLAG XIIIB, NÜRNBERG 1941. BOX 6. BARAKA 89

Oflag VIIIB, Nürnberg . 1941 - Coloured ink-drawing, autographs in different coloured pens (Very Good, small tears in margins) 30 x 21 cm (11.8 x 8.2 inches). A stunning document with a humoresque drawing, made in the German prison camp Oflag XIII - B, during WWII by Serbian imprisoned officers. - This unique and unusual drawing with a list of autographs was made in the German prison camp Oflag XIII-B during WWII by imprisoned Serbian officers. The drawing, surrounded by a barbwire and signed by one of the inmates, ?or?e ?urkovi?, shows a prison cell with sleeping inmates, with one of them yelling "Close the doooors!!!" (???????? ???????!!!). The document is signed by 16 inmates, with their names and addresses, most of them in Belgrade. Oflag XIII-B was a German Army World War II prisoner-of-war camp for officers, originally set in the Langwasser district of Nuremberg until April 1943, when it was moved to Hammelburg in Bavaria. Oflag XIII-B, was founded in May 1941, for Yugoslavian officers, predominantly Serbs captured in the Balkans Campaign. By April 1943 the prison cam housed at least at least 3,000 Serbian officers. Many were members of the Yugoslavian General Staff, some of whom had been POWs in Germany during the First World War. In the last months of the war, at the beginning of 1945, American POWs, captured during the Battle of the Bulge and in the North Africa Campaign, were brought to a separate department of Oflag XIII-B. As the conditions for the American POWs were very poor, Serbian prisoners shared their slightly larger rations with them, until the liberation of the camp on April 6, 1945, after two weeks of fierce fights between the Allies and Germans for the camp.
