The War Speeches, British first editions - Into Battle, The Unrelenting Struggle, The End of the Beginning, Onwards to Victory, The Dawn of Liberation, Victory, and Secret Session Speeches

London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1941. First edition. Hardcover. This is a full, seven volume set of British first edition, first printings of Winston Churchill's war speeches volumes. This set features very good volumes in very good dust jackets. First printing sets have become challenging to assemble thus. Few books are as emblematic of Churchill's literary and leadership gifts as his war speeches volumes. During his long public life, Winston Churchill played many roles worthy of note - Member of Parliament for more than half a century, soldier and war correspondent, author of scores of books, ardent social reformer, combative cold warrior, Nobel Prize winner, painter. But Churchill's preeminence as a historical figure owes most to his indispensable leadership during the Second World War, when his soaring and defiant oratory sustained his countrymen and inspired the free world. Of Churchill, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." When Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953, it was partly “…for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.” Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes. The British first editions are visually striking, but were printed on cheap wartime paper, bound in coarse cloth, and wrapped in bright, fragile dust jackets. They proved highly susceptible to spotting, soiling, and fading, so the passage of time has been hard on most surviving first editions. This collector-worthy set has suffered some age and wear, but is nonetheless superior to most we see. The blue cloth bindings remain tight, bright, and clean with negligible wear. The contents are quite respectably bright and clean given the cheap, wartime paper of these first editions. We find no previous ownership marks of any kind in the set. Spotting is primarily confined to page edges and the prelims of a few volumes, notably absent from the main text throughout. Victory is also first state, denoted by incorrect pagination at page 177. The first printing dust jackets all retain unusually bright spines including Into Battle, which has been spared the customary spine toning. Six of the seven dust jackets retain the original front flap prices, with only the lower front flap of Onwards to Victory neatly price-clipped. The jackets all show mild to moderate edge wear to hinges and extremities, with fractional chipping to some, mostly at the spine ends. Nonetheless, the jackets are bright, substantially complete, and present quite well on the shelf. All seven dust jackets are newly fitted with removable, archival quality clear covers.         Curious George

Houghton Mifflin Co, Boston - An uncommon, very early --but not 1st-- edition of "Curious George". Based on the dustjacket price of "$2.75", we're surmising this edition was published in the mid to late 1950s, some 14 to 17 years after the exceedingly scarce 1941 original edition was published. Even though this copy is missing its front free endpaper, it remains solid and very presentable. Tight, clean and VG- in its red cloth. And in a crisp, price-intact, VG- dustjacket, with 2 separate 1" pieces of tape --and several small closed tears-- along the panel edges. A bit of light, forgiveable soiling as well at the panels. Octavo, written by an uncredited Margret Rey and wonderfully illustrated thruout in rich color by her husband H.A. Rey. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS

      - McCLOSKEY,ROBERT. MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS. NY:Viking / Junior Literary Guild 1941 (1st published August 1941). 4to, rust colored cloth with picture of a duck in lower right corner, bottom edge rubbed and the inevitable and always present offset on endpapers from binding else VG+ in dust wrapper with price intact, with no award medal and with no mention of the Junior Literary Guild. (Jacket has 1/4" piece off spine ends and corners, fraying with some closed tears on bottom edge, rough at crease). 1st edition, CALDECOTT AWARD WINNER. [A word of explanation about the Junior Literary Guild: The Junior Literary Guild was created in 1929 as a literary book club for children. It prided itself in often selecting the best award winning books before publication. This is most likely due to its editorial board that included amongst others Carl Van Doren and Eleanor Roosevelt who was an active member of the board. Unlike other book clubs that offered cheap reprints, the Guild books used first edition sheets with the only changes being different binding color and the inclusion of the words "Junior Lit. Guild" on the title page and spine. Because they are in fact first editions, Guild books are almost as valuable as the Viking copies but they can sell for a bit less]. Because every child who read this book, read it to death, first editions in dust wrappers are notoriously rare, and ardently sought after. This one is a prize. See Bader p. 155-6.         Winston S. Churchill Signed Photograph.

      - Signed photograph of Prime Minister Winston Churchill with his right hand in his pocket. Boldly signed, "Winston S. Churchill, 1941", affixed to its original studio mount. Accompanied by a letter from Churchill's personal secretary R. E. K. Hill, dated July 3, 1941, addressed Mrs. Stapleton, "I am now returning to you the photograph of Mr. Churchill, which he was glad to autograph for your husband's ship, H.M.S. 'Amaranthus.' Nicholas Stapleton commanded HMS Amaranthus from January to August 1941. American photographer Edward Steichen took this photo of Churchill in 1932 for Vanity Fair magazine, with the image later serving as the dust jacket photograph for While England Slept in 1938, the American edition of Churchill's Arms and the Covenant. Authorized copies of this print were produced for sale by Harrods after Churchill ascended to the Prime Ministership in 1940. The photograph measures 5.75 inches by 7.75 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 18 inches by 21 inches. An exceptional signed portrait with noted provenance. Winston S. Churchill was a British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He was also an officer in the British Army, a non-academic historian, a writer and an artist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his overall, lifetime body of work. In 1963, he was the first of only eight people to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. Churchill was born into the family of the Dukes of Marlborough, a branch of the Spencer family. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, the Anglo-Sudan War, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and wrote books about his campaigns. At the forefront of politics for fifty years, he held many political and cabinet positions. Before the First World War, he served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of Asquith's Liberal government. During the war, he continued as First Lord of the Admiralty until the Gallipoli Campaign caused his departure from government. He then briefly resumed active army service on the Western Front as commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He returned to government under Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, then Secretary of State for the Colonies. After two years out of Parliament, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Baldwin's Conservative government of 1924-1929, controversially returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK economy. Out of office and politically "in the wilderness" during the 1930s because of his opposition to increased home rule for India and his resistance to the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII, Churchill took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany and in campaigning for rearmament. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was again appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on 10 May 1940, Churchill became Prime Minister. His speeches and radio broadcasts helped inspire British resistance, especially during the difficult days of 1940-41 when the British Commonwealth and Empire stood almost alone in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. He led Britain as Prime Minister until victory over Nazi Germany had been secured. After the Conservative Party suffered an unexpected defeat in the 1945 general election, he became Leader of the Opposition to the Labour Government. He publicly warned of an "Iron Curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe and promoted European unity. After winning the 1951 election, Churchill again became Prime Minister. His second term was preoccupi [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Sq. 4to, 10 x 10.5 inches; bound by Wall in grey cloth spine over boards with etched cover label; dust jacket with etched spine label, torn but stabilized at top. 65 miniature etchings printed in colors on heavy wove paper showing portraits, biographical locales, and notable institutions that hold Whistler's work; over 50 of the etchings are individually signed; printed on Dard Hunter handmade paper. NUMBER ONE OF 63 COPIES SIGNED BY WALL and marked PP (Printer's Proof) on colophon, and with etched dedication to Natalie Williams "of Texas, in whose home surrounded by etchings & books our inspiration came to do this book." Bernhardt Wall was born in Buffalo, New York on Dec. 30, 1872. He studied at the Buffalo Art Student's League then moved on to study in New York under Henry Reuterdahl and also apprenticed under William Auerbach-Levy. Wall began a career as a lithographic illustrator in 1889 working primarily as a commercial artist in New York and Buffalo. He soon became known as the "Postcard King" and designed over 5,000 comic cards. The year1915 marked a defining point in Wall's artistic career. Wall visited Colorado, Nevada and California making etchings of Indians, cowboys and major cities which were later published in a portfolio entitled, "Under Western Skies." These proved to be very successful and the artist shortly thereafter moved to California permanently. Wall continued to produce many fine etchings of the American West and by 1930 had also become a much respected historian of the region. Bernhardt Wall was unique in that he not only drew the etchings for his books, but he also printed and bound them. His books are in libraries and universities around the world including the British Museum, Library of Congress, the libraries of Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Brown Universities. His works were also in the private collections of J. P. Morgan, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Henry C. Frick and Dr. N.C. Mathewson. Wall etched three sitting presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Taft, and Henry Coolidge. Other prominent individuals etched by Wall include Sam Houston, Mark Twain, Thomas A. Edison, Abraham Lincoln, and Andrew Jackson. Artist and historian, Bernhardt Wall (1872-1956) was a pioneer etcher and producer of fine press books who treated a vast array of subjects, including Texas and the Southwest. Historians of fine press printing have compared him to William Blake. This collection of Wall's scrapbooks, publications, and correspondence was built by collector Natalie Williams of Marshall, Texas.
