        Six Came Back

Bobbs-Merrill Co 1940 - New York & Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill Co., 1940. 1st Edition, 1st Printing. 8vo – 22.2cm. 305 pages, frontispiece portrait, black-and-white photographic plates, cartographic endpapers. Publisher’s blue cloth with bright gilt titles on cover and spine. In Near Fine Condition — a lovely copy of an important first hand account of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition under the command of Lieutenant Adolphus Greely. This volume contains Brainard’s entire diary, a portion of which (the last four chapters) was published in 1929 as “Outpost of the Lost.” An unusually well-preserved and complete copy. Arctic Bibliography 2071 First person account by Sergeant David Brainard, one of the six lone survivors of the 25 man Greely Expedition - officially called The Lady Franklin Bay Arctic Expedition that sailed from St. John's, Newfoundland in July 1881 with Lt. Adlophus W. Greely in command. On the day of sailing, Sergeant Brainard began his diary – this was the first publication of Brainard’s complete diary account that documented one of the tragic stories of Arctic polar exploration. Brainard was one of three men who pushed up the Greenland coast to plant the American flag in the snow of the most northern latitude men reached at the time. Brainard also achieved Farthest West crossing Grinnell Land from east to west and for the first time sighting the Western Ocean. An important and very scarce book — also a very good read.         P.N.F. National Fascist Party: Italian Youth Organization of the Littorio / Gioventù Italiana del Littorio; Gioventu Italiana del Litterio

Rome: Novissima, 1940. First edition. Hardcover. g to vg. Quarto (10 1/2 x 8 3/4"). Unpaginated. [142]pp. Original printed stiff paper boards rebacked with modern brown cloth. Photographic frontispiece portrait of Mussolini. Lavishly illustrated throughout with 123 striking photogravures, this English-language Fascist propaganda work features images of the Italian Youth of the Lictor movement (Gioventù Italiana del Littorio, or GIL), a movement of the National Fascist Party of Italy founded in 1937 to monitor and influence the minds of all young people. The organization served as a paramilitary group (training for future assignments in the Italian Army), as well as education in the career of choice, technology (including postschool courses for legal adults), or education related to home and family (solely for the girls). It carried out indoctrination with a message of Italianness and Fascism, training youths as "the fascists of tomorrow."Moreover, the GIL took charge of all activities initiated by schools, and pressured teachers to enlist all students. Extra scholar activities consisted of the 'sabato fascista' (Fascist Saturday) designated for pre-military training and Fascist cultural and sporting activities. Also, children would spend their summers in camps (which included the national-level Campi Dux, reunions of Balilla and Avanguardisti). Male children enrolled wore a uniform similar to the one worn by Blackshirts. During military exercises, they were armed with scaled-down version of Royal Italian Army service rifle, Moschetto Balilla. For more information, see: Alexander J. De Grand. "Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany: the 'fascist' style of rule." 2nd edition. London, England, UK; New York, New York, USA: Routledge, 1997. Pp. 66. and Jean-Guy Prévost. "A total science: statistics in liberal and Fascist Italy." McGill-Queen's University Press, 2009. Youth marches in the advance-guard of History."The 123 photogravures (1 to 2 images per page) are divided into the following sections:1) Child Welfare: The Protection of the Race2) Sports Training3) Military Training4) Spiritual Training / Preparation for Work5) The Fascist Levy6) The Camps7) The Centres of the G.I.LIncludes photographs of Fascist architecture and art.Moderate and sporadic foxing to original covers.         Characteristics of the Rocket Motor Unit Based on the Theory of Perfect Gases

Philadelphia: The Franklin Institute, 1940. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. First Edition. [2], 806 pages. Brown buckram with gilt title and volume numbers to spine panel. Journal of the Franklin Institute, Volume 230 (July-December 1940), entire volume offered. The Malina article is found on pages 433-54. Library bookplate to front pastedown, bindery ticket to front pastedown, ink stamp on page one. Properly deaccessioned. A bright clean copy. Cloth. Frank Malina was an early rocket pioneer whose name is not nearly as well known as Goddard or von Braun, but whose work contributed significantly to advancements in early theory and practice. Among his many contributions, Malina (with Rocket Research Project of GALCIT engineers) developed "red fuming nitric acid (RFNA) and aniline, a propellant combination that achieved great use in American rocketry" (previously Goddard had used liquid oxygen which was hard to handle and store). Malina, with H.S. Tsien continued a "theoretical study of the thermodynamic characteristics of rocket motors", which research was used in 2 American firsts: the first successful American use of solid fuel JATOs (jet assisted take-offs) and a JATO of an American bomber. "Malina made a number of other important contributions to rocketry during his career. With von Kármán, he developed in 1940 the theory of constant-thrust long-duration solid fuel rocket motors. In 1942 he and another associate, Mark Mills, designed and patented a safety pressure relief valve for solid propellant rocket motors. In 1943, with Martin Summerfield, Malina introduced and patented improvements in methods of applying rocket propulsion to flying boats. In 1946 they formulated the 'Malina-Summerfield Criterion' for step-rockets. This criterion stated that each step of the optimum step-rocket has an equal ratio between its payload mass and the total mass of the step-rocket propelling that payload." "As an early pioneer in the field of rocketry and propulsion, Malina made many valuable contributions. His innovations in long-duration propulsion and solid and liquid fuel propellants were particularly important. According to a 1958 letter to Malina from Rear Admiral D. S. Fahrney, U.S.N. (retired), 'It was based on your findings that we produced the first jet propelled guided missile in this country.'" (see American National Biography online for quotation citations) The present work is a further study of the general theory of operation of the constant pressure rocket motor unit, and references work done by Goddard and others. These theoretical studies were undertaken before practical trials were undertaken due to the high costs of building and testing actual rockets. Much of this research resulted in the practical development of solid-fuel rocket motors.

        John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1940 - 1940 Wisden - Original Hardback

1940. Hi, This lot is a 1940 Original Hardback Wisden in Good to Very Good Condition. For a 1940 this is closer to very good than good, plus it has not had any restoration which is rare as many 1940s (due to their usual poor condition) do. The boards are clean but show some Signs of wear, the gilt is starting to fade but original and better than many, more so on the spine than the front. Odd mark to the boards. Internally this is excellent for a '40 , strong hinges and clean pages. This hardback was my Nemesis for 3 years and a hard book to find, pretty impossible in very good condition (Im still looking so let me know if you have one). I have an alternative 1940 Hardback if needed, it is a lot cheaper as in a lot poorer condition. Please ask.

        Wassergottheit
