The definitive edition of the original French text with a preface by Camille Mauclair. Illustrated with 6 full-page and 21 part-page pen and wash drawings by Auguste Rodin, printed in collotype by Georges Duval and hand-colored by Maruice Beaufume in Paris. The illustrations are reproduced from the copy of the book Rodin illustrated for Paul Gallimard. Copy #142 of 1500, unsigned as issued. This title was delayed seven years in shipment because of World War II with members not receiving the book until 1947. The books were stored under great hazard during the Nazi occupation and could not be finished until the war in Europe had concluded.

Internally, NO inscriptions, some light offsetting from turnins, no inscriptions, (xi), (2), 2-213 pp, [2], an edition limited to 175 copies, bilingual text, Welsh on Verso, English on Recto. (Harrop 41) The visions, written by a country parson, were first published in 1703. Distinguished by brilliant imagery and style, the work is a classic of Welsh prose literature, the 24th edition and the 3rd to appear in English.

      During Britain's Finest Hour, Winston Churchill Thanks the American People for Their Support & "in this great struggle"& & He writes in December 1940, as bombs rain down on London& & By the time Churchill became prime minister in May of 1940, the lion's share of Europe was either allied with Germany or been been conquered by Hitler 's armies. Then France collapsed and a surrender instrument was signed on June 22. Under its terms, two thirds of France was to be occupied by the Germans and the vaunted French armed forces were disbanded. Now only valiant Britain stood between the world and a new Dark Age. It rose to the occasion throughout that momentous year, with Churchill providing the inspiration, the "lion's roar". Though Paris was surrendered rather than risk its destruction, Churchill refused to consider a peace with Hitler, and swore that the English would defend London house to house and see it razed to the ground rather than capitulate and lose the institutions of freedom that had been gained at such cost over a thousand years. & & From July to September 1940, all waited tensely for the German invasion of Britain to begin, as the Battle of Britain was fought to secure air supremacy. By mid-September it was clear that the RAF had denied the Luftwaffe the control the Germans needed to cross the English Channel, and the Nazi leaders decided to concentrate instead on bombing cities to pound the British people into submission. For months in succession the cities of Britain suffered night after night of air terror, and while the cities were being destroyed the people sought safety in air raid shelters, and in London, in Underground (subway) stations. This bombing of the civilian population came to be known as the Blitz.& & In October, being pounded by the unrelenting air assault, Churchill and his government moved to the underground cabinet war rooms. In November, Coventry was destroyed; still the bombing continued, as it would until May of 1941.& & Meanwhile, although the United States was officially neutral in the war, there was mounting concern that Britain might be bludgeoned into submission. President Roosevelt persuaded Congress to pass a neutrality bill that permitted Britain to buy American goods and munitions, and in September 1940, seeing that the British had no more funds available, he issued an executive order giving Britain destroyers in return for leases on some bases in the Caribbean. That same month, the threat to the U.S. was increased when Germany concluded an alliance with Japan and Italy. More and more Americans were stating publicly that U.S. national security would be in jeopardy if Germany triumphed, and Congress recognized the danger in the situation by passing the first peacetime draft in American history.& & There remained, however, a very strong America First movement that opposed U.S. involvement in the war and tied Roosevelt's hands, limiting what he could say or do to assist the British. For his part, Churchill knew full well that, although Britain might hold out gallantly, American participation was the only hope for actually winning the war. He wanted to encourage those Americans who were openly offering support.& & Typed Letter Signed on 10 Downing Street letterhead, underground war rooms in London, December 21, 1940 (the very day German bombers left Victoria Station in flames), to an American named Mrs. Sears. "Thank you very much for your kind letter. It is encouraging to feel that we have the ever-increasing sympathy and support of the people of the United States, and especially of New England, in this great struggle."& This letter is historically important for two reasons. One lies in the knowledge that Churchill felt that Britain's support in the U.S. was increasing, a prime goal of his and something crucial to Britain's survival. Time would bear out the accuracy of this conclusion. The second lies in the view it provides into Churchill's soul at this key moment in world history (and the high-water mark of the leadership which won him everlasting renown), evidenced by his classification of the war against Hitler, even at that early date, as "this great struggle." Although Churchill left a voluminous correspondence, letters written during the Blitz in 1940 are so uncommon on the market that a search of auction records discloses just one other comparable one having been offered over the last 30 years.

This is a set of the true first Faber printings, in pamphlet form (1940, 1941, and 1942 for the last two titles) of each of the four poems which comprise Eliot's great Four Quartets - and in fine or very near fine condition. Each title is in differently coloured card covers as issued, very clean, no tears, some minor bumping to the edges of a couple of the poems. Apart from some minor spotting to the gutters of two leaves in Burnt Norton, the pages of the four poems are free from foxing or any other marks (the third title has the true Adelphi watermark). Little Gidding is here in its earliest state, ie sewn not stapled. Burnt Norton had appeared in Eliot's 1936 Collected Poems, while East Coker had earlier appeared in New English Weekly; the other two poems were here published for the first time. A set in extremely collectable condition, here together with the audiobook CD recording of the Four Quartets read by Ralph Fiennes, with a 1-hour running time.

'The Dry Salvages', 1941. 15pp. Wrappers a little browned at natural fold and several minor indentations to half-title, near fine. 'Little Gidding' 1942. 16pp. Second state wrappers (stapled, not sewn), lightly faded at natural fold, else fine. Eliot wrote 'Burnt Norton' whilst working on 'Murder in the Cathedral' and it first appeared in print in his 1936 'Collected Poems'. The three subsequent poems were completed several years later, but 'East Coker' was the first of the four to be issued as a separate volume. They were subsequently published in a single-volume casebound edition in the US in 1943 with a UK publication the following year.. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good.

Illustrated with woodcuts by Fritz Kredel. One of the scarcest publications of the press with only 530 copies printed. Of that total edition of 530 copies SIGNED by the designer on the colophon page, this is one of only 15 Presentation Copies with the publisher's blindstamp attesting to such on the colophon page where the printed number "476" is struck through and the initials "G.M." are handwritten. Acquired directly from the publisher's files, and most likely the publisher George Macy's very own copy.

        Original Art]: Six Large Military Themed Animal Paintings

      1940 - Six original paintings, each measuring 17" x 25". Gouache on artist boards. Near fine with some toning to the edges of a couple of paintings and tape remnants on the rear of each, but each image is still exceptionally fresh and vivid. The six images depict various animals -- squirrel, owl, lion, dog, bear, and rooster -- all with military hats and one with a complete uniform, suggesting the art was created during World War II or possibly the Korean War. Several of the paintings appear to reinforce wartime ideals of conservation (squirrel storing nuts), education (the owl reading), and military service (the lion sitting on a pile of money with the various bills labeled "Security," "Leadership," "Welfare," "Prestige," and so on). The rear of two paintings have the fading stamp of the Simmons-Beal Agency that was located at 3 E. 40th Street in New York City from the 1930-1990s. We could find no specific information on the artist aside from references to several children's books he may have illustrated during the 1950s.         Prime Minister Churchill's Address to the Italian People December 23 1940 together with the Christmas Day Message from His Majesty King George VI to His People Broadcast December 25th, 1940 and the Christmas Day Message from Prime Minister Mackenzie King

      This is an exceedingly rare wartime speech pamphlet featuring Churchill's Address to the Italian People of 23rd December 1940. Broadcasting from the Cabinet War Rooms, Churchill sought to assure the Italians of Britain's historic friendship with Italy and place blame for the conflict on Mussolini. Churchill's speech is published here with two others - King George VI's Christmas Day Message of 25th December 1940 and Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King's Christmas Day message to the Canadian Army. This speech pamphlet is unusual in several respects - its publication, its survival, and its superlative condition. Per Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen (pages 530-532) the publisher - Universal Life Assurance and Annuity Company - was in business from 1902 to 1942. In an exuberant surge of patriotism, the company published over 40 booklets in the "Universal Life for Victory Series", a few of which were speeches by Churchill. Apparently, there were copyright concerns in the office of the Prime Minister, as well as with his British and Canadian publishers. Prickly correspondence was exchanged, but also some correspondence recognizing the propaganda value of Universal Life's efforts. Eventually the matter was closed. This copy, a remarkable survivor, is in truly outstanding, fine condition. The pamphlet is bound in wire stitched paper wraps, measures 6 inches x 3.5 inches, and is 14 pages in length. Churchill's speech occupies all of pages 8 through 14. The pamphlet is pristine inside and out - crisp, clean, and bright with no wear or markings of any kind. Searching for flaws, we note that one of the two binding staples (both still perfectly tight) shows just a trivial hint of rust, but not even enough to stain the adjacent paper. It is hard to imagine many copies of this perishable and unusual wartime publication still exist; a superior example is improbable. The pamphlet is protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen D77, unknown to Woods.

        Tefillah, Original painting of a group of five men praying in the synagogue

      N.p., ca. 1940-45. 11 1/4 by 16 1/4 inches. Finely executed in gouache or tempera with a multicolored border, and with the forged signature of Arthur Szyk. The image is titled in Hebrew in the bottom border and is typical of Szyk's style, with much detail and exaggerated facial expressions. It is believed that many works of popular Polish artists were copied under the Nazi regime for future sale. One particular artist, a prisoner in one of the concentration camps, may have been assigned to copy Szyk's work. The books in the bookshelf against the wall are labeled in Hebrew: "Arthur Szyk." Fine, in a black frame with a gilt inner border. An attractive piece with an enigmatic history.

      This is an exceptional copy of an unusual and quite scarce edition, unknown to many Churchill collectors.  It contains seven of Churchill's speeches from 1940, including "Blood Toil Tears and Sweat" and "The Few".  This is the first appearance in volume form of these speeches, later published in "Into Battle".  Included are Churchill's speeches to the House of Commons of 13 May (excerpts), 19 May, 18 June, 20 August, 11 September, and 8 October.  Also included is Churchill's speech of 21 October to the French nation.  This edition was published by Ransohoff's, a San Francisco department store, and printed by Grabhorn Press in a limited edition of 250 copies. Moreover, it is a large and striking production, measuring 15.75 x 10.75 inches.  It is bound in red cloth covered boards with a quarter linen spine and a leather spine label stamped in gilt. The contents are printed on lavish, handmade paper and printed in red and black.  Two similar editions were published by Ransohoff's - the edition offered here and another in blue cloth containing six of Churchill's speeches from 1940-1941.  Both are quite scarce, but this earlier red edition is even more elusive than the blue.  While these publications are beautiful, they are notably fragile.  The linen spines soiled easily, the leather spine labels faded and cracked, the cloth was prone to wear, and the contents prone to spotting.  Finally, as noted in Langworth, (p.243), because of the way these were bound, "these books almost always have one or two gutterbreaks".  Here is the best copy we have ever offered.  The binding is remarkably clean, the linen almost immaculate and the leather spine label pristine.  The boards show light wear to the corners, which nonetheless remain sharp.  The contents are a treat.  There is no sign of the gutterbreaks endemic to this edition.  Moreover, we find no spotting whatsoever and no previous ownership marks of any kind.  A terrific example of this rare edition.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A133, Woods D(a)5, Langworth p.243.

Mus) , an important member of the Bund in interwar Poland, who was part of a delegation of the Jewish Socialist Bund of Poland in America in 1939 to urge for aid to Poland's Jews. He later served as general secretary of the International Jewish Labor Bund until 1961, and helped edit the five volume 'Geshikhte fun Bund', and wrote for the Bialystoker Yizkor book.
