The 14 Games Played in the Match Between Paul Keres and Dr. Max Euwe (Holland, 1939/40) with Notes from Various Sources. Original Annotations to Two Games By Dr. Emanuel Lasker

Dr. Albrecht Buschke, New York 1940 - 28-page pamphlet publication, stapled, in paper covers, text also on final page. Signed by Lasker 'Em. Lasker' on verso of title page, which also asserts his copyright, dated 1940. The match took place in late 1939 and Jan 1940, shortly before the Nazis invaded Holland. Buschke, who was also publishing a book by Lasker on unemployment, called The Community of the Future, apparently prevailed on him to annotate two games. He may have added some comments to the other annotators, who also included Jacques Mieses, then celebrating his 75th birthday. Very rare item of chess ephemera. Provenance: from the collection of J. J. O'Hanlon, former Irish chess champion. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Primato. Lettere e arti d'Italia.

ITA

Demy 8vo. 307pp. Green cloth lettered in gold at spine.         Långt från landsvägen. Roman. Tredje upplagan.

Stockholm; Bonniers, 1940. 19,5x13 cm.

        The Hamlet.

Random House, New York 1940 - First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by William Faulkner on the half title page. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with ads for other books on the back panel (Peterson A22). Dust jacket art by George Salter. From the library of novelist and historian Shelby Foote. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Rare signed. The Hamlet, the first novel of Faulkner's Snopes trilogy, is both an ironic take on classical tragedy and a mordant commentary on the grand pretensions of the antebellum South and the depths of its decay in the aftermath of war and Reconstruction. It tells of the advent and the rise of the Snopes family in Frenchman's Bend, a small town built on the ruins of a once-stately plantation. Flem Snopes -- wily, energetic, a man of shady origins -- quickly comes to dominate the town and its people with his cunning and guile. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Portrait of Jennie [Signed Advance Copy]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1940. First edition. Wrappers. Very Good +. A Very Good + example of the QUITE SCARCE TO RARE PUBLISHER'S ADVANCE COPY for the first edition, first printing, of Robert Nathan's major novel "Portrait of Jennie", SIGNED BY ROBERT NATHAN on the half-title where Nathan has inscribed the book as follows: "For Michael Druck. (I [underscored] / haven't even got one of these [underscored] // Robert Nathan // Los Angeles 1978" (rubbing to the spine edges and to the wrapper edges, tiny tear to the rear wrapper's bottom edge); one of this American novelist and poet's two most notable works (the other being "The Bishop's Wife" - Bobbs-Merrill, 1928), and his most successful work, "Portrait of Jennie" centers on a Depression-Era painter and the woman he is painting, which woman is slipping through time. Considered a masterpiece of Fantasy Fiction, the book provided the basis for the 1948 fantasy film directed by William Dieterle, produced by David O. Selznick, and starring Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten, Ethel Barrymore, and Lillian Gish. Science Fiction writer and editor Judith Merril described the book as "one of the most durable successes in the fantasy business," and Ray Bradbury wrote that the novel "...touched and frightened me when I was twenty-four. Now, once more, it touches and frightens." Advance copies of the novel are quite scarce -- as noted in his inscription to this volume, even Robert Nathan did not have a copy -- signed copies of the novel in any format are quite scarce as well, and signed copies of this Publisher's Advance copy are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good + copy of the QUITE SCARCE PUBLISHER'S ADVANCE COPY, SIGNED BY ROBERT NATHAN. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE TO RARE.

        The Idiocy of Idealism.

London u.a., W. Hodge & Comp. Ltd., 1940. 152 S. OLwd. m. OSch. EA in engl. Sprache. Mit einer halbseitigen Widm. an Dr. Robert Eisler, dat. Oxford April 1941. Fleck a. Deckel. Kennedy, Anthony Ludovici, Maximilian A. Mugge, Maude D. Petre, Horace B. Samuel, Herman Scheffauer, G.T. The World Significance of the Russian Revolution“. From 1892 in England, he encountered Nietzsche. The 18-volume Nietzsche translation was overseen by him from 1909 to 1913. With the start of the World War I. he returned to Germany, later Switzerland ... As his daughter married the bookseller Albi Rosenthal in Oxford, he went back in 1938: \"Levy has for many years been the tireless apologist and interpreter of Nietzsche\". (Zitat).
