ARCHIVE OF ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY ORIGINAL PRODUCTION AND PUBLICITY STILLS FOR 'OF MICE AND MEN'

Los Angeles: United Artists 1939. Los Angeles: United Artists, 1939.. One hundred and fifty 7.5 x 9.5 inch (a few smaller) borderless black & white stills. Generally very good to near fine (a few corner creases, one or two with signs of oxidation). An unusually comprehensive archive, with trivial duplication, of the production and publicity stills for the 1939 film adaptation of Steinbeck's novel, directed by Lewis Milestone, starring Burgess Meredith, Lon Chaney Jr., et al. The still photographer for the film has generally been identified as Tom Evans. The collection offers unusually strong representation of the X, P, and H sequences, in many instances representing contiguous runs of images within the negative sequences. A considerable number of the stills bear the studio's mimeographed cut-lines affixed to the back, and a few bear rubber-stamped designations as "proof" prints. It would be difficult indeed to recreate such a near comprehensive collection of the stills associated with this film.

Original Photograph of Helen Keller with her Akita pure bred, "Go-Go," Inscribed

[NP. ND, but ca. 1939]. Photograph (black and white) of Miss Keller with her beloved dog, "Go-Go" an Akita pure bred, inscribed in pencil across the bottom third of photograph, "To Mr. John E. Monahan / in appreciation of his help / fullness. / Cordially / Helen Keller." Size of photograph: 8 inches x 10 inches; matted and framed to overall size of 13 inches x 14 inches; photograph a bit rumpled at corners with some spotting. Still a lovely image of Miss Keller at age 59 seated on large chair with "Go-Go" seated at her feet, one of her hands on his collar and the other across his back. She is smiling and beautifully dressed in suit with fur shawl and hat with large cameo pin at her throat. "Go-go" is almost smiling as well - turned to face the camera with his gentle eyes seeing what his owner cannot. Helen Keller (1880-1968), noted American lecturer and author, blind and deaf from the age of two, was an international celebrity in a day and time before television and international movie distribution. She is important in the history of the Akita breed as she introduced the first Akita to the United States. In 1937, while on a speaking tour of Japan, she visited the Akita Prefecture (the home of the Akita on the northern most area of the island of Honshu) and commented on how much she admired the breed, designated a national monument in Japan, and that she would like to have such a dog for herself. As a measure of the respect in which she was held, Mr. Ichiro Ogasawara, a policeman in the area, presented her with a puppy called Kamikaze-Go. Miss Keller returned with him to the US, but he died of distemper at the age of eight months. Despite growing political tension between the US and Japan, Miss Keller's request for another Akita eventually brought her Kenzan-Go in July 1939 - an official gift of the Japanese government. "Go-Go" was an older brother of her original dog. He remained her friend until his death at 9 or 10 years of age. Through Kamikaze-go and his brother Kenzan-go, Miss Keller is credited with having introduced the Akita to America. Although most blood lines of today's Akitas are traced back to those animals brought to the US by returning soldiers after 1945, the effect of the well-known Miss Keller having an Akita as her companion was great. This is the only image of the brother of the first American Akita, and the first Akita to live a full life in the US, that we've seen. Keller's many accomplishments are well- known. She spent her entire life working for the betterment of others' lives, especially the disabled. She supported the equal rights for women, the woman's peace movement, abolition of child labor, Margaret Sanger's birth control movement, and - to the horror of her Alabama relatives - the NAACP! 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN, pp. 65-68. NAW THE MODERN PERIOD, pp. 389-393. See web sites for Akita dogs for further information. See an Image.

        YEARLING

1939. 2. (WYETH,N.C.)illus. THE YEARLING by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons 1939 (1939 A). 4to, (7 1/2 x 9 3/8"), dark blue cloth (buckram) with deer head in gold on cover, spine stamped in gold with no ornaments, top edge plain, Fine condition in publisher's blue slipcase with a deer head on white printed paper label (case slightly rubbed on edges else sound and VG+). LIMITED TO ONLY 750 COPIES FOR SALE-SIGNED BY BOTH WYETH AND RAWLINGS.Two interesting facts have emerged about this edition. First, although 750 copies were printed, only 520 copies were actually bound and sent out with the light blue binding, chemise and slip case found on many copies. The remaining 250 copies were bound with the limited edition sheets in this dark blue cloth with a darker blue slipcase and were distributed later. Secondly, according to letters from Rawlings to her editor, as the limited edition sheets were being printed she discovered that there was a line missing on page 196 (between lines 5 and 6). A new signature with the correction was inserted but not before some sheets were distributed. This copy, although in the later binding, has the earlier uncorrected sheets so there was apparently no rhyme or reason as to how they managed this error. Illustrated by Wyeth with pictorial endpapers, 14 full page color illustrations, title page decoration, plus 2 special charcoal and wash full page illustrations done for this limited edition. Also included is a facsimile of a 2 page letter by Wyeth discussing the book (not present in the trade edition). Wyeth reportedly traveled to Cross Creek, Rawlings' home, before beginning the artwork, in order to capture the essence of the area. Very scarce. Allen p. $4250.00

ORIGINAL ART: TOM, TOM THE PIPER'S SON FROM MOTHER GOOSE

1939. Paperback. 1. (DENSLOW,W.W.)illus. ORIGINAL ART: TOM, TOM THE PIPER'S SON FROM MOTHER GOOSE. Offered here is a large and wonderful finished pen and ink drawing for Ye Old Time Nursery Rhymes by Mother Goose. Although the book with this title was actually published in 1939 by Baldwin & Strachan in Buffalo when the art was re-discovered (after Denslow's death), the art itself was most likely executed circa 1910 when Denslow was actively illustrating advertising booklets. In their bibliography of Denslow, Greene and Hearn write about this art as follows: "The drawings were discovered in 1939 in the scrapbook of one William W. Reed. Since a man named Horace Reed was connected with Niagra Lithograph Company, it is likely that Denslow drew the pictures for one of his advertising pamphlets. The pictures first appeared in Youth Magazine, a hand-out to patrons of Dodd's Dairy in Buffalo. In issue eleven, this pamphlet was announced as available from Dodd's milkmen for ten cents." Executed on Strathmore drawing board measuring 19 1/2" wide x 14 1/2" high, the image nearly fills the entire space. Although this particular piece is not signed, many of the other pieces we have available are. This is a rare opportunity to own very fine published work by Denslow.

        The Day of the Locust

Random House New York: Random House. (1939). First. First edition. Slightly cocked and the paper spine label is a trifle darkened from binder's glue, both flaws which seem endemic to the book, else near fine in a bright, very good dustwrapper with small chips at the top of the front panel, and at the crown, but which has been spared the professional restoration that most copies we have seen lately seem to have undergone. The timeless and quintessential Hollywood novel in which West explores the frustration, violence, and savagery beneath the glamour and glitz. Increasingly scarce. The Yearling was the best-selling novel in America for the year 1938 and won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize. Rawlings's editor was Max Perkins, who also worked with F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and other literary luminaries. The tender story of a boy and a fawn, has since entered the elite pantheon of American Classics, being widely sold and studied even to this day. Newell Convers Wyeth (October 22, 1882 – October 19, 1945), known as N.C. Wyeth, was an American artist and illustrator. He was the pupil of artist Howard Pyle and became one of America's greatest illustrators. During his lifetime, Wyeth created over 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books,25 of them (including the Yearling), for Scribner's Classics - the work for which he is best-known. Wyeth was a realist painter just as the camera and photography began to compete with his craft. Sometimes seen as melodramatic, his illustrations were designed to be understood quickly. Wyeth, who was both a painter and an illustrator, understood the difference, and said in 1908, "Painting and illustration cannot be mixed—one cannot merge from one into the other." Wikipedia . Well executed, professional minor repair to pictorial rear endsheets at gutter. Several very light, small blemishes to front cover. A lovely, very crisp and clean copy. Darkening to chemise. A mild split or two and some mild soiling to slipcase.

        Foundations of Logic and Mathematics.

Chicago, The University of Chicago Press, (1939). 8vo. In the original blue printed wrappers. A very nice and clean copy - near mint. VIII, 71 pp.. First printing of Carnap's seminal publication of his semantical period. Here Carnap presents a clear and detailed account of the application of logic and mathematics in empirical science and the central importance of the analytic/synthetic distinction herein.Carnap thought that the logic of science could be fruitfully applied to the problems of quantum theory as well. In particular, the final sections of Foundations of Logic and Mathematics (1939, §§24, 25) suggest that the vexed question of the "interpretation" of the wave-function can be resolved by appreciating that theories of modern mathematical physics operate with "abstract" terms which are implicitly defined, in the manner of Hilbert, in an axiomatic system (and thus require no "intuitive" or "visualizable" meaning) but which still relate to empirical phenomena (experimental measurements) indirectly. (Cambridge Companion to Carnap). These thoughts anticipate Carnap's later conception of the "partial interpretation" of theoretical terms.Rudolf Carnap (born 1891 in Ronsdorf, Germany, died 1970 in Santa Monica, California) was an immensely influential analytic philosopher, who has contributed decisively to the fields of logic, epistemology, semantics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of language. He was one of the leading figures of the Vienna Circle, and a prominent logical positivist. He studied philosophy, physics and mathematics at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg, and worked at the universities of Jena, Vienna and Prague until 1935, when he, due to the war, emigrated to the U.S., where he became an American citizen in 1941. In America he became professor of the University of Chicago

ORIGINAL ART: THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN TOSSED UP IN A BASKET FROM MOTHER

1939. Paperback. 1. (DENSLOW,W.W.)illus. ORIGINAL ART: THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN TOSSED UP IN A BASKET FROM MOTHER GOOSE. In issue eleven, this pamphlet was announced as available from Dodd's milkmen for ten cents." Executed on Strathmore drawing board measuring 19 1/2" wide x 14 1/2" high, the image nearly fills the entire space, signed by Denslow with his characteristic seahorse design. This is a rare opportunity to own very fine published work by Denslow.

        Design No. 429. Jan. 19, 1939

Detroit: January 19, 1939. Colored pencil, pastel and gouache on black construction paper. Signed and dated with an inscription: "Design No. 429. Jan. 19 1939." Visible area: 11 5/8 x 19 5/8 inches. Framed. 20 3/4 x 26 3/4 inches. Minimal pre-war concept car by Herb Newport Herbert J. Newport, Jr. (1907-1991). Herb Newport went to work at Duesenberg in the 1920s. From 1932-35, he was the Chief Designer. During this period he designed Duesenbergs for Clark Gable and for Gary Cooper. After leaving Duesenberg, Newport opened his own design studio and worked as a consultant for Nash, Chrysler and others, branching out into all sorts of industrial design. This design was probably done for Hudson (despite a label of a previous owner that suggests it was a design for Nash), as it bears more resemblance to the 1939 and 1940 Hudson Terraplane convertibles than it does to the Nash convertibles of that time. The drawing has a couple of unusual features, one being the headlight at the nose of the hood, complemented by small parking lights where headlights would usually be found. The other unusual feature is the rather threatening egg tooth in the middle of the front bumper. The design is conveyed in a most dramatic fashion, in simple red, white and gray lines on a deep black construction paper, underlined by a thicker red line that contains the title, date and signature and a logo "Styling for Industry". This was the period in which "streamlining" and "ultra-streamlining" came into fashion, and one is reminded of the effects of a stream on anything that sits in its path long enough.

On the Products of the Fission of Uranium and Thorium Under Neutron Bombardment.

Ejnar Munksgaard, Copenhagen 1939. 8vo. 14 pages. Orig. red soft cover.. With Aage Bohr's name on the front cover, from Professor Dr. phil. Niels Bohr's private collection.** One of the most important events of the 20th century was the discovery of nuclear fission, here described by the discoverers themselves. Meitner, being a Jew, had to flee Berlin in 1938 and found a job in Stockholm. Her former colleague at the Kaiser-Wilhelm Institute in Berlin, Otto Hahn, sent her data stemming from the bombardment of Uranium with neutrons, and Meitner, together with her nephew Otto Frisch - who was a visitor with Bohr in Copenhagen - were the first to understand that the Uranium nuclei had actually split into two pieces, a process later to be known as nuclear fission and which led to the development of both nuclear energy and the atomic bomb. When Frisch explained their ideas to Bohr, Bohr's immediate response was: "How stupid we have been!" Bohr worked hard to ensure that Meitner and Frisch got credit for their correct interpretation of the phenomenon, but nonetheless the Nobel Prize for the discovery of fission was given to Otto Hahn alone in 1944
