        Gottes Rune. Ein Buch von Glaube und Treue * Roman aus der Kampfzeit der NSDAP in O R I G I N A L - G A N Z L E D E R - V o r z u g s a u s g a b e

München, Zentralverlag der NSDAP Frz.Eher Nachf., 1938. Vollständige Ausgabe im Original Verlagshandeinband (Ganzleder / Leder / OGLdr / OLdr / Ldr im Format 13 x 19,2 cm) mit dekoriertem Rücken- und Deckeltitel sowie Kopfsilberschnitt, 469 Seiten, Schrift: Fraktur. \"Warum handgebunden? Faust.

Ch. Henchoz, Paris 1938 - Sublime edition of Goethe's Faust illustrated by Art Deco master Francois-Louis Schmied. Considered one of the greatest book illustrators of the 20th century, Ward Ritchie calls this Faust "the most ambitious project that Schmied had undertaken to publish". Schmied began work on the book in 1929 but due to the financial repercussions arising from the Great Depression was forced to abandon the project for a number of years. Fortunately, the publisher Charles Henchoz agreed to sponsor and publish the book in 1936 and work was resumed. Schmied painted sixty-six illustrations for the book which were then engraved on wood by his son Theo. Ritchie states that "Schmied, from his outpost in Morocco carefully supervised the printing of the illustrations. It is an amazing example of the devotion to perfection that Schmied had." Printed in a limited edition of 106 copies, this copy is number 79, signed by the author in pencil. I could locate only three copies of this work in the United States. 4to (35 x 24cm), 66 compositions in color, including 20 full-page plates. Loose as issued in original wrappers, uncut, original cloth folder and slip-case. Offsetting as is common with Schmied due to his special formula for ink. A few very slight foxing marks. Fine condition. [Carteret Illustrés IV, 188.]

Journals of John D Lee, 1846-7 and 1859

Salt Lake City, UT: Privately printed for Rolla Bishop Watt by Western Printing Company, 1938. First edition. Hardcover. 244pp. Quarto [27.5 cm] Green cloth with gilt stamped titles on the spine and front cover. Very good. The edges of the covers are faded and lightly rubbed and bumped. There are numerous barely perceptible stains on the rear cover. The endsheets are slightly soiled, the rear endsheet more so than the front endsheet. There is a contemporary owner's name and address on the front free endsheet. The text block is just beginning to crack at the title page. The pages are ever so slightly yellowed. Number 218 of 250 copies. Charles Kelly was the first to wade into the murky water of John D. Lee. Kelly acquired the diaries form the Lee family and from Rolla Watt who was nephew of W.W. Bishop, the Nevada lawyer who represented Lee at trial. For all of Kelly's spite, he was surprisingly fair to Lee and paved the way for other historians, most notably Juanita Brooks. Volume was printed by Kelly's Western Printing.

Des Canons, des Munitions? Merci! Des Logis s v p

1938. LE CORBUSIER. Des Canons, des Munitions? Merci! Des Logis... s.v.p. Oblong 4to., 283 x 230 mm, bound in original illustrated boards, in a new red cloth folding box. Paris: Editions de l'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui, [1938]. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of one of the scarcest and most sought-after books by Le Corbusier. This profusely illustrated monograph is based on Le Corbusier's involvement with the Pavillon des Temps Nouveaux in 1937. In publishing this plea for the application of the same technologies that were utilized for the fabrication of munitions and armaments of war to the realization of an enlightened architectural urbanism, Le Corbusier was nonetheless struck by the increased relevance of the title applied to his text. The title-page bears the parenthetical note: "Ce titre date de janvier 1937; il n'est nullement une allusion à l'actualité brûlante des réarmements de 1938." The pictorial boards are decorated with a collage of images of fighter planes, artillery shells, a cannon, and a city overview. A near fine copy of a book rarely found intact owing to the fragile nature of the boards. Fotografia Publica 133.

Langue: Français [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE COMPLEAT GOGGLER: BEING THE FIRST AND ONLY EXHAUSTIVE TREATISE ON THE ART OF GOGGLE FISHING. .by Guy Gilpatric.

John Lane The Bodley Head. London. - 1938 1st edition, UK issue. 8vo (149 x 222mm). Ppxiv,182. B/w photograph plates, b/w vignettes. Yellow-green cloth, green octopus vignette to upper board, green fish motif and titles to spine. Cloth slightly used, slightly foxed, some soiling to edges else good copy, lacks dust-wrapper. Roy Beddington's copy, his name and address to front end-paper. ". .That most noble and excellent sport perfected and popularised by Guy Gilpatric in the Mediterranean Sea, though long practiced elsewhere by other benighted savages: Setting forth the proper manner of making the goggles, spears and other needful gadgets together with descriptions of many marvels witnessed upon the bottom of the sea and fully exposing the author's cunning methods of swimming, diving and spearing fish and octopi." Gilpatric was a one-time pioneer aviator and then fighter pilot on the Western Front who turned to journalism and novels after the war. Returning to France, he settled on the Riviera where he discovered swimming goggles and fish-spearing. Without wanting to minimise Cousteau's achievements, this book does put him into context; "Commandant Le Prieur wearing his self-contained diving gear. .The cylinder contains a half-hour's supply of compressed air. With this simple apparatus, the inventor and many others dive for sport, science and salvage." Chapters include: Genesis; Merou; Octopus; Goggles; Spears; Swimming and diving; Guns; Fish; Gadgets; Cooking; Garglings of a garrulous goggler, witnessing wonders, telling lies, exploring wrecks, and hunting treasure. "Mr Steve Butler, the English librarian of Juan-les-Pins, made himself a gadget with which he often swims an hour at a stretch without lifting his head for air. It is simply a tube which curves around the back of his head, like a periscope. He either ties it around his neck or holds it in place with wide rubber bands. Due to his rather considerable coefficient of buoyancy, Mr Butler is unable to dive fast enough to spear fish, and uses this device for hunting mermaids." Genuinely pioneering, a true rarity and well worth a read. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
