The War the Infantry Knew 1914-1919.

London: P.S. King & Son Ltd.,, 1938. A Chronicle of Service in France and Belgium with The Second Battalion His Majesty's Twenty-Third Foot, The Royal Welch Fusiliers: founded on personal records, recollections and reflections, assembled, edited and partly written by One of their Medical Officers. Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to the spine, initials of the regiment gilt to the upper board. With the typographical dust jacket. 27 leaves of sketch-maps bound in at the rear. Faint mottling to the boards, pale differential browning to the free endpapers, text-block very slightly toned, overall very good in lightly browned jacket, a touch soiled, some chipping at the head and tail of spine and corners, no loss of text. First edition, one of just 500 copies privately produced by the author, this remains an extremely elusive title, almost impossibly so in the jacket. The battalion included the authors of two of the most famous literary accounts of the Great War, Graves and Sassoon, with the latter contributing a chapter to the present work entitled "A Subaltern's Service in Camp and in Action," covering the period from March 12th to April 16th, 1917, which is described as, "An early draft of pages of Memoirs of an Infantry Officer." Graves offered to contribute, but Dunn was not an admirer of Goodbye to all that, and declined his offer. Graves is mentioned, disparagingly, a handful of times in the text. Dunn's is an extraordinary book, in the Face of Battle John Keegan described it as "one of the most interesting and revealing books of its type ? a genuinely truthful and fascinating picture of the war as it was for the infantry." Compiled in diary form from the reminiscences of around 50 members of the Battalion, it is without doubt the most authentic account of the experience of the Western Front at Battalion level. Providing complete confirmation of the old cliché that war is '90% boredom and 10% sheer terror,' these accounts provide remarkable insight into the mental state invoked by the conditions of trench warfare. Extremely uncommon, and highly desirable thus.

Listen! The Wind (inscribed by Charles and Anne Lindbergh to kidnap investigator)

Harcourt Brace & Company, New York 1938 - This is an amazing piece of history, a signed first printing copy of Listen! The Wind that was inscribed by the author Anne Morrow Lindbergh, and her husband, Charles Lindbergh, to Ruth and Norman Schwarzkopf. Norman Schwarzkopf (1895-1958) was Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police and headed the investigation of the kidnapping of Lindbergh's infant son, Charlie Schwarzkopf re-enlisted in the U.S. Army at the onset of World War II. After a distinguished career, he retired in 1953 with the rank of Major General. He was the father of General Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. (1934-2012), a highly distinguished officer who most famously commanded the allied effort in Operation Desert Storm (1991). The book is in very good to near fine condition, with some light wear to the cover. There is a first printing jacket from another book that I have put on this book. It is in fair condition.Any signed books by the Lindberghs are coveted, but one with this association is truly amazing. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        ???????????? ????? ???? (Carta politica del mondo)

British Government Group of Palestine Mandate. (Set of three works).

London HMSO -1939 1938 - A set of three works: two pamphlets and a book. 1) PALESTINE PARTITION COMMISSION REPORT, Presented by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to Parliament by Command of His Majesty, October 1938: 152 x 245 mm, 310pp., 1 printed map, 12 large folding maps at rear including 2 in the rear pocket. 2) PALESTINE STATEMENT BY HIS MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, Presented by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to Parliament by Command of His Majesty, 1938: (152 x 243 mm), 4pp. 3)PALESTINE STATEMENT OF POLICY, Presented by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to Parliament by Command of His Majesty, 1939: (152 x 243 mm), 12pp. In the middle of the 1930s, at the edge of the "darkest hours of Jewish history" (Jewish Agency), the British Mandate for Palestine was receiving waves of Jewish immigrants fleeing the rise of Hitler. In 1936 a large number of immigrants ensued a six month-long strike of Arabs in Palestine. A Royal Commission was organised the same year (also known as the "Peel Commission"), of which an official report was published on July 1937. It stated that, as the recent events had shown, the Mandate was not working anymore and should lead to a partition of Palestine. The Palestine Partition Commission (or "Woodhead Commission") thus took place in February 1938, and its report was published in November the same year (work no. 1). After a presentation of the geographical, economical and financial aspects of a partition, including three different plans of separation of the territories, the conclusion was drawn that it was not feasible. A statement of the government (work no. 2) published right after this report announced a Conference to come, that would gather in London both a Jewish and an Arab delegation from Palestine. The "London Conference" thus started in February 1939, in order to come to an agreement. After more than five weeks, no settlement had been made between the two nations, leading the British Government to take the decisions. Published in the "White Paper of 1939" ("Palestine Settlement of Policy", work no. 3), they were: that an independent state would be established within ten years, before which Palestine would be neither a Jewish nor an Arab state; that a limit of 75000 Jewish immigrants would be set for the five years to come, and that the rights of Jews to buy land from Arabs would be restricted. Less than ten years later, the Declaration of Independence would be signed on 14 May 1948, establishing the State of Israel. ONE OF ONLY 1500 COPIES OF THE WHITE PAPER PROPOSING AN INDEPENDENT PALESTINIAN STATE WITH POWER-SHARING AGREEMENTS BETWEEN ARAB AND JEW, RESTRICTING JEWISH IMMIGRATION AND CONTROLLING SALE OF LAND TO JEWS. Increasing Jewish immigration into Palestine was one of several factors that ignited the 1936-1939 Arab revolt in Palestine. The rise of Nazi Germany and the passing of the 1936 Nuremberg Laws led to greater migration pressure. Britain had suppressed the Arab revolt in Palestine by 1939 and, realizing that war with Germany and Italy was imminent, sought alliances with other Arab states. Fascist Italy was funding the Palestinian Arab leader Mohammad Amin al-Husayni and his associates, leaving Britain keen to prevent the further spread of Italian influence. In February 1939, a conference in London to negotiate an agreement on the partition of Palestine dissolved without resolution. The British had already decided on a course of action, appeasing Arab concerns by restricting Jewish immigration just as many Jews were attempting to flee Germany. Consequently, this White Paper fuelled Jewish resentment. The provisions of this White Paper were immediately lifted upon the Declaration of the Independent State of Israel. Special Notice These three original copies attest to the evolution of the status of the British Mandate of Palestine in the last decade before its independence. The two statements are the last two White Papers to be published during the Mandate. After the Inde [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Bolero: A Magazine of Poetry.

Oxford: Worcester College,, 1938-39. 3 parts (all published), octavo. Original wrappers, stapled as issued, lettered in black on front cover (the cover illustration bears a close resemblance to Kurt Hutton's iconic image of an unemployed man, photographed in 1930s Wigan and published in Picture Post 1939). Staples rusted (with concomitant minor staining). An excellent set, with the errata slip pasted into part 3. First edition, first impression, inscribed on each drop-head title by the editor, John Waller, and with a note (dated "Sept 67") in issue 2: "Apart from 'New Base' (?) this was the first magazine to publish Keith Douglas and Norman Nicholson". Very scarce: Copac records only one complete set in British and Irish institutional libraries, at the BL (there are two incomplete sets: Trinity College Dublin and Manchester), OCLC adds only the set at the Pierpont Morgan Library. "After the two years of Surrealism's demise in England, the Auden generation's next flagship journal, Oxford Poetry, collapsed as well and was replaced by John Waller's Bolero... [it] began in the summer of 1938... and it lasted until the spring of 1939, at which point it was replaced... by Kingdom Come" (James Gifford, Personal Modernisms: Anarchist Networks and the Later Avant-Garde, 2014). The most distinguished contributors to Bolero were Norman Nicholson and Keith Douglas, who, in 1938, won a scholarship to Merton College, Oxford, but was tragically killed in Normandy in 1944, robbing "English literature - as had Owen's death in 1918 - of the most individual and accomplished poet of his generation" (Jon Stallworthy in ODNB).

        Karte des Bücherlandes.

Heimeran Verlag., München 1938 - München, Heimeran Verlag. (1938).

First edition. Hardcover. Shelfwear to board edges, front cover with one abraded area affecting one letter of title, small area of plain rear panel peeled, front free endpaper creased. Oblong folio. Illustrated throughout. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards. Le Corbusier's photographic record of his revolutionary pavilion at the Art et Technique Exposition in Paris of 1937, intended to embody "la science severe de lurbanisme" despite the bright polychromatic murals covering its walls and its informal construction. The title refers to Corbusiers objection to the French governments vast military spending in relation to the budget for housing, although this spending appeared to be more justified in the following year.
