        JOURNEY TO THE BORDER.

Hogarth Press 1938 - 8vo. This copy is inscribed to Alan Clodd, whose Enitharmon Press republished Upward's books many decades later. Edward Upward was a legendary literateur in Cambridge, who greatly influenced W. H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood. "Journey To The Border," now largely forgotten, is a Kafkaesque / Freudian novel that enjoyed critical acclaim when it was published. Fine in a fine example of the Vanessa Bell dust jacket. Rare thus First edition of the author's first book. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

NEW YEAR'S GREETING FROM JOSEF SUDEK:; DRY POINT ENGRAVING

(Prague: Frantisek Tichy, 1938. A b&w drypoint engraving, image size 3 3/4 x 6 1/16 in., on a larger sheet. Housed in a contemporary metal and glass frame, with a finished window mat. Lightly soiled vellum covers the frame's edges. A very good impression. Czech photographer, Josef Sudek (1896-1976), INSCRIBED this to his friend Sampelik. According to the unverified story recounted when this etching was bought in Prague, Sampelik was the station manager at the rail yard in Prague. He had a large collection of recorded music, and befriended Sudek, who used to come to spend his evenings with Sampelik, listening to jazz. This engraving of Tichy's, was used by Sudek as a holiday greeting, and the photographer SIGNED and dated it in 1965. Frantisek TIchy (1896- 1961), the Czech painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, created this drypoint for Sudek in 1938. It is the first graphic work by Tichy executed in engraving. It depicts a photographer, with his head under the cloth of a large camera, focusing the lens on his subject, a tailor's dress form. The plate is SIGNED in the lower left corner, with a "T" in a circle, signifying this as the 2nd state of this engraving. See, Dvorak, Frantisek, FRANTISEK TICHY GRAFICKE DILO. Prague: SNKLU, 1961.

        Margaret Sanger: An Autobiography

New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 1938. Octavo. Photographic frontispiece. (A few leaves dog-earred.) Original dark blue cloth (some light scuffing, spine faded). Provenance: Dorothy Hamilton Brush Dick (presentation inscription from the author). FIRST EDITION. A FINE PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY MARGARET SANGER TO DOROTHY HAMILTON BRUSH DICK, Sanger's close friend and the first Secretary of the National Committee on Federal Legislation for Birth Control (NCFLBC): "May, 1939 / To Dorothy Dick / A Valiant & Courageous Coworker in our Cause and a friend whom I love / Margaret Sanger." Sanger writes about Brush on page 417: "Mrs. Alexander C. Dick was Secretary [of the NCFLBC]. She had the old-fashioned head of a daguerreotype, but was thoroughly modern in her verve and gay personality and her quick agility of mind. Since 1916 [corrected in pencil by Dorothy Brush to 1928], when I had first known her, she had been really interested in the research end of birth control, and definitely had agreed with the then new war cry that it should be under medical supervision. It was mainly due to her and her late husband, Charles Brush of Cleveland, that Ohio had had from the beginning one of the best organized and conducted state leagues." Dorothy Brush further has added a note in pencil on page 424 about a hearing in which Sen. John C. Lehr objected to contraceptives and stated that he had six children. She writes "I was there. Mrs. Thomas Hepburn, Katharine's mother, hopped up and said 'I have 6 children too & there have always been contraceptives in my home.'" Katharine Hepburn was the first Chairman of the NCFLBC. An outstanding association copy: Dorothy Hamilton Brush (1894-1968) was a birth control advocate, women's rights advocate, and author. She worked closely with Margaret Sanger and the birth control movement, serving not only as Secretary of the NCFLBC but on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. She co-wrote (publishing under her maiden name Dorothy Adams Hamilton) with Walter S. Hayward, The American People: A Popular History of the United States, 1865-1941 (1943) and Your Land and My Land: The American People from Lincoln to Roosevelt (1943). In 1947 Brush and her husband Alexander Dick divorced. Sanger and Brush saw their efforts fully realized in 1952 with the establishment of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. Presentation copies by Margaret Sanger are scarce, especially those to a close working partner within the modern international birth control movement.

Birds And Beasts In Africa, and The Angler In South Africa.

London: Macmillan and Co, and Johannesburg: Hortors Ltd, 1938 and 1923.. Pair of Baden-Powell association copies, with a letter of authenticity from the scout association: 1) The Angler In South Africa. Inscribed "To The Chief Scout" by H.V. Marsh, the Assistant Commissioner of Natal during Baden-Powell's trip to South Africa in 1926. Octavo, pp.190. Bound in publisher's gray cloth over card boards, titles in black to upper and spine. With 34 photographic plate illustrations, and a fold-out appendix of fish, where they can be found, and what baits are most suitable for catching them. Binding shows some bumping to spine ends, case slightly shaken, spine sunned, rear joint showing a little gauze. Internally clean, with no signs of spotting. Marsh's ink inscription appears on the front flyleaf. 2) Birds and Beasts In Africa. Inscribed to "Miss Southey" from Baden-Powell, in thanks for work done for him in Nyeri, 1940. Octavo, pp.169. Bound in publisher's cream cloth, recased with top of spine laid down, black stamped African figure and titles in red to upper, titles in red to spine. Illustrated with colour frontispiece, seven other colour plates, and numerous in-text black and white illustrations. Cloth binding is a little tanned, with some bumping to corners. Internally clean, minor tanning to prelims, Baden-Powell's ink inscription to half title. An extraordinary pair of volumes, given to and given by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, adventurer and founder of the Scouts. H.V. Marsh was a prominent figure in the South African Scout movement, so much so that in 1963 the South African Scout Association founded the "The H V Marsh Award for Scout Journalism". The letter which accompanies the two volumes, from the Scout Association Archives, describes The Angler in South Africa as 'a most appropriate book' – because 'if [Baden-Powell] had a spare moment during his busy life he liked to fish'. Without wishing to speculate too far, since Baden-Powell addresses Birds And Beasts In South Africa simply to "Miss Southey", there are several potential candidates amongst the descendants of Sir Richard Southey (1808-1901), first Treasurer and then Colonial Secretary in Natal. The dating of the gift is also interesting as Baden-Powell was to die in Nyeri the following year, in 1941. By this time, Nyeri had become associated with the Happy Valley set, which included Lady Idina Sackville, the infamous Jock Delves Broughton, and a number of other aristocrats.

Small Archive Relating to Oregon's San Francisco & New York Worlds Fair Commission, [including folio] 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition on San Francisco Bay, Feburary Eighteenth - December Second [and also] collection of photos, correspondence, a certificate, etc.

Division of Publications, Golden Gate International Exposition. Borden Printing Co., Inc. 1938 and 1939, Oregon; San Francisco - Outer folder: 37 by 28.5 cm. Unpaginated, sixteen leaves, with a folding plate. The primary large brochure is quite lavish, with many color and two tone illustrations, dramatic photographs, arresting graphics and laden with a high Art Deco sensibility. The purpose of this brochure was in essence to sell the fair to its potential sponsors, underwriters, and exhibitors and as P.R., create excitement in the press. And so it did, with architecture renderings that brings to mind the bold designs of Josef Urban or even of Oz, as in the movie released in 1939. Among the other parts, a handsome proof or mock-up of a "Certificate of Participation", containing original pen and ink and watercolor work; a letter from John D. Webber to Thomas Gunn, head of the Oregon World's Fair Committee, in which Webber expresses his bullishness about the state and the purpose of participating in the fairs; a large blueprint of the Hall of Western States; several large photos and illustrations of the Treasure Island fair and its pavilion(s); miscellaneous blank stationary; and lists of Oregon clus and organizations. Light wear, but everything is otherwise in very good to fine condition.

Oregon; San Francisco: Division of Publications, Golden Gate International Exposition. Borden Printing Co., Inc., 1938 and 1939. Leatherette. Very Good Plus. Outer folder: 37 by 28.5 cm.
