Listen! The Wind . With Foreword and Map Drawings by Charles A. Lindbergh.

New York: Harcourt, Brace & Co., 1938. - 8vo (203 x 136mm), pp. xii, 275, [1 (blank)]; 3 full-page maps and one illustration after Charles Lindbergh; one half-tone plate; original red cloth blocked in gilt with airplane design on upper board and lettered in gilt on the spine, map endpapers after Charles Lindbergh, top edges blue, pictorial dustwrapper, with design after Charles Lindbergh, retaining price, glassine dustwrapper, morocco backed slipcase, spine lettered and decorated in gilt; lettering on spine slightly dulled, dustwrapper slightly rubbed and chipped at edges, glassine dustwrapper browned and chipped at edges, nonetheless a very good, bright copy, retaining the pictorial and glassine dustwrappers.First edition of an award-winning book. Anne Morrow Lindbergh (1906-2001) met the celebrated American aviator Charles Lindbergh in 1927, when her father Dwight Morrow, the American ambassador to Mexico, invited Lindbergh to visit the country. They married in 1929, she soon learnt to fly under his tutelage, and then became her husband's trusted co-pilot; indeed, in 1930, she became the first woman to receive a United States Glider Pilot Licence – one of numerous 'firsts' as a female pilot. In 1931 the Lindberghs undertook a historic series of flights in their specially-adapted Lockheed Sirius, Tingmissartog, travelling across Alaska and Canada to Japan and China, in order to explore new routes for airmail. Anne Lindbergh recorded the experiences in her best-selling book North to the Orient (New York: 1935) – which won the inaugural National Book Award for Nonfiction – and in 1933 the Lindberghs made a survey flight around the North Atlantic Ocean: '[t]he purpose of the flight was to study the air-routes between America and Europe. At that time, the air-routes of the world were entering their final stages of development. The countries had already been crossed and the continents connected. It remained only for the oceans to be spanned. Their great overwater distances constituted the last major barrier to the commerce of the air' (p. v). After crossing the northern part of the Atlantic from New York to Copenhagen, the Lindberghs flew south to Africa and then crossed the southern part of the Atlantic, and Listen! The Wind describes the flight across the southern Atlantic. The book reflects the collaborative nature of the flight, and the body of the book is Anne Morrow Lindbergh's work, complemented by Charles Lindbergh's foreword, appendix, maps, and dustwrapper design. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's exploits earned her the National Geographic Society's Hubbard Gold Medal in 1934.Bennett, A Practical Guide to American Book Collecting (1663-1940), p. 237.         Arms and the Covenant.

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd,, 1938. Compiled by Randolph S. Churchill. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt within triple fillet gilt, rule to front board in blind, top edge blue. With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece. Spine slightly faded; an excellent copy in the jacket with short closed tears and a couple of minor chips to extremities, some light marks to panels and tape repairs to verso. First edition, only printing, in the scarce first issue jacket, priced 18/- net. An important collection of Churchill's speeches, warning of the dangers of a re-armed Germany. A contemporary review in the journal of the Royal Institute for International Affairs remarked that "apart from their literary graces" Churchill's speeches were remarkable because of "the restraint of their language" in view of the "blunders and inaccuracies" of the Government and for his technical mastery: "There seems to be nothing from Naval Strategy to the jigs and tools in an aircraft factory... on which Mr. Churchill is not an expert."

Sketches on the Nile: An Album of 43 Original Watercolors and Doggerel Verse Documenting a Nile Cruise in 1938

Black leather album containing 54 tissue-guarded leaves of watercolor paper, of which 43 have been used. 10 x 12 inches, stamped in gilt on the front "Sketches on the Nile / Alan Hinch / 1938." Leather scuffed, cloth tape reinforcement to inner hinges, all else very good. Alan Hinch was born in England c. 1881, but was living in the United States by 1920, when the federal census documents him working in Miami as pilot of a private yacht owned by socialite James Deering, an executive in International Harvester Company. He apparently embarked on this Nile cruise as companion to his next employer, Richard Flint Howe (1863-1943), another International Harvester executive who had married James Deering's sister, Abby. Passenger manifests show Hinch as traveling in the company of a "Mr. R. Howe," and the census of 1940 lists him as butler on Howe's estate. He was clearly more than a simple servant, however, as this charming and humorous album reveals. The album documents the journey from departure on the Italian Line passenger ship Conte de Savoia on January 15, 1938 to arrival home at Banksia, Howe's custom-built mansion in Aiken, South Carolina, on March 26, 1938. Each page includes an original watercolor (most measuring about 4.5 x 8 inches, but some larger), with a related original doggerel poem. Hinch's paintings are skillful. His poetry is markedly less so, but it is clever, observant, and skillfully captures the traveler's experiences. On a visit to Asyut, Hinch writes: Assuit the place they said would be warm/ Was 42 degrees at early morn/ If the like keeps on we will have to don /Earlaps, coonskins, as at a football game./ Rode through the quarters where the natives were/ Couldn't say lived, for it looked so bare/ They called out for bakscheesh/ Both old, and young/ They thought we came only to give to them./ Oh, what a place to be born and live./ Then through the bazaar narrow and crowded/ Maybe bargains galore/ But we passed through as quick as we could./ Oddments, and rubbish in hovels so poor./ Then to the tombs too high to climb/ And round the modern town we drove/ Back on board the "Memnon" to dine. A visit to the ancient cemetery at Beni Hasan is described from the perspective of the donkeys who labor under the weight of well-fed tourists. Other subjects include the ocean liners and streamers they traveled in, local people they encountered (a dragoman, a water carrier, a little girl in a red scarf), boats on the Nile, camels and water buffalo, the Pyramids, Sphinx, Panopolis, El-Balyyana, Abydos, Karnak, Kom Ombo, Wadi Haifa, Abu Simbel, and Luxor. There are also several views of the Mediterranean coast and one of Banksia in South Carolina. In all, a charming and lovely representation of the places and time.

Korrespondenzsammlung mit Briefen von u. a. Alexander Lernet-Holenia, Hermann Röbbeling, Felix Salten, Heinrich Schnitzler und Hans Thimig. Verschiedene Orte, 1930er Jahre.

(ms. Br. mit eh. U. vom 5. IV. 1932). . . . .         1938 Wisden Original Hardback

Hi, This lot is an Original 1938 Hardback Wisden . It is in very good condition, the first of the new hardbacks. 1938 & 39 do tend to be quite poor this is far better than most for the year. The front and spine gilt is excellent for a poor year slight fading to the spine if being picky, the boards are very good, there are a few light marks mainly to the front (part cup of tea) and a hexagonal mark to the bottom of the spine but still nice boards. The internal pages are fabulous, slight eeakness to the hinges but far from breaking (which is common). By far superior to many of the same year. Hard to find in good condition, this is not too far off excellent. More Photos on request. Payment: Cheque

Unflinching A Diary Of Tragic Adventure

New York: Funk & Wagnalls 1938 - New York: Funk & Wagnalls, 1938, 1st U.S. Edition. [Viii], 159 pp. Frontispiece of Edgar Christian, 2 ink sketches, 1 map. Publisher's blue cloth with silver lettering on spine Ñ complete with unclipped dustjacket. Dust jacket is in very good+ complete condition with fading to spine - all titles on spine legible. An unusually well-preserved copy in Near Fine condition. --Arctic Bibliography 3146 Published posthumously, Christian's diary is the only first-hand account of John Hornby's last expedition to the barren ground of Canada's northwest territories. As Canada's Department of was creating the boundaries of the Thelon game sanctuary deep in the tundra in 1926, Hornby decided to spend the summer and winter there, living off the land, and persuaded his 18-year-old cousin, Edgar Christian, and a young man named Harold Adler to accompany him. It was Christian's dream of a lifetime. He was a greenhorn, but knew how to handle a rifle. They started out by canoe in June from Fort Resolution on the Slave River with six months worth of grub, flour, pemmican, bacon, biscuits, etc., traps, rifles and 2000 rounds of ammunition. What happens next is captured in this diary account found two years later by the search party that set out to find the party after they failed to return as planned. Hornby died first. Christian was the last to go. "please don't blame dear jack," were the last words he wrote in his diary. A real no-nonsense account of three men pioneering their way in the vast, untamed sub-arctic wilderness of the barren-lands. This tragic account by Edgar Christian tells how they did it, and reveals the mistakes they made. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
