John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1938 - 1938 Wisden Original Hardback

1938. Hi, This lot is an Original 1938 Hardback Wisden . It is in very good condition, the first of the new hardbacks. 1938 and 39 do tend to be quite poor this is far better than most for the year. The front and spine gilt is excellent for a poor year slight fading to the spine if being picky, the boards are very good, there are a few light marks mainly to the front (part cup of tea) and a hexagonal mark to the bottom of the spine but still nice boards. The internal pages are fabulous, slight eeakness to the hinges but far from breaking (which is common). By far superior to many of the same year. Hard to find in good condition, this is not too far off excellent.

        Death in the Making

New York: Covici Friede, (1938) - 4to (279 × 215 mm), pp.[96]. 148 black-and-white photographs by Capa and Gerda Taro. Arrangement [i.e. layout] by André Kertész. Preface by Jay Allen, captions by Capa. Plain endpapers. Drab olive cloth-covered boards, titles in black; endemic toning to pages, nick to cloth at fore-edge. Black-and-white photo-illustrated dust-jacket, printed in red and black; spine lightly sunned, chipped at head and foot of spine, edges, and corners, lower portion of front panel split at spine-fold. A fine copy in an unrestored example of the rare dust-jacket. First edition. In the summer of 1936, Robert Capa made the first of several trips to Spain to cover the civil war that had recently broken out there. He was accompanied by his lover Gerda Taro, a talented young photographer who was probably the first woman to photograph on the front line, she was also the first to be killed in the course of her work when she was accidentally crushed by a tank near Brunete in July 1937. The layout of Death in the Making is by André Kertész, Capa’s friend, mentor and fellow Hungarian. Shortly after he arrived in Paris in the spring of 1934, whilst living in near poverty, Capa met Kertész, who loaned him money, found him work, and taught him about photography. It was also in Paris at around this time that Capa met Henri Cartier-Bresson and David ‘Chim’ Szymin (Seymour). The scarce dust-jacket features Capa’s iconic photograph of a Republican soldier at the precise moment of his death. Death in the Making contains not just Capa’s own photographs, including many that defined and revolutionised modern war photography, but also a number by Taro, and in many ways this book is her memorial, as Capa’s eloquent printed dedication declares: ‘For Gerda Taro, who spent one year at the Spanish Front, and who stayed on. Madrid, December 1937.         14 Christmas Cards from Robert Frost to Wallace and Mary Stegner

New York: Spiral Press. Very Good. First Separate Edition. Stapled wraps. Collection of 14 Christmas Cards from Robert Frost to the Stegner Family. Robert Frost was both a father-like figure and mentor to a young Wallace Stegner, having met Frost in 1938 at the Bread Loaf Writers Conference in Vermont. Frost had begun the tradition of printing holiday greeting booklets in 1929, producing 35 issues at Spiral Press in New York, thru 1962. While these 'cards' are not rare (in latter years, as many as 17,000 copies were printed) , the majority of cards were distributed by Frost's publisher, colleagues and friends, as indicated by the names printed on the title page. Hence, cards imprinted with Frost's name are not common and inscribed cards by Frost are relatively uncommon. This collection includes cards (while Barrett calls these cards, each is a fine letterpress booklet, often with fine woodblocks and multiple colors of ink and are each small treasures) from 1940, 1946, 1947 (inscribed) ,1948 (inscribed) , 1949 (inscribed) , 1950, 1951 (inscribed) , 1953 (inscribed) , 1956,1957, 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1962. Collection also includes news clippings about Frost, publicity photos, copies of letters to and from Stegner regarding Frost, a copy of Stegner's article titled "Robert Frost & Bernard DeVoto", and a 60 minute cassette tape of Frost reading (unknown date or location but good quality). This collection acquired from the Stegner family. All booklets in very good condition or better. Scans upon request. ; Various; Signed by Author .

        Albert Richard Football Map.

Milwaukee, WI.: Albert Richard Co.. 1938.. Color poster, pictorial / pictographic map, 19 x 26 inches (49 x 66 cm). Brown and white illustrations and text on verso. Light creasing from rolling, light toning and wear to edges, overall very good condition. Eye-catching pictorial map proudly proclaiming America's passion for college football, with a "Key to Official College Nicknames" with 140 listings (lower centre of map). On the verso is a listing of The Albert Richard All-American Team of the 1937 season, and the reader is invited to "join in selecting this year's Albert Richard All-American Team - to share in awarding this honor to football's outstanding stars of 1938." Also on the verso are illustrations and descriptions of rugged outerwear from this manufacturer of men's clothing. Albert Richard Co. published this series of football maps from the late 1930s to early 1950s, all brightly colored and full of information for the football fan. These pictorial map posters combine great graphics with fascinating information and an interesting historical spin. In fact the 1941 map in the series is documented in "Eyes of the Nation: A Visual History of the United States" (2004) by Vincent Virga and Alan Brinkley: "Derived from the nineteenth-century English games of soccer and rugby, American football emerged as an inter-collegiate sport in the 1870s and as a professional sport in the 1890s. This pictorial map demonstrates how popular football had become by the beginning of World War II. With a primary emphasis on the collegiate side of the sport, with team nicknames, 1940 season records, and major conference championships, it also documents the major professional clubs - only ten at the time. The map carries the endorsement of the noted sports writer Grantland Rice, and reports his selections for the 1940 All-America team." .

County Courthouse. An original watercolor, gouache and India ink on paper by Bishop, 6 ¾" wide x 5 ¾" high, circa 1938

      - Benton 23. For three months during the winter of 1938, Bishop lived in a boarding house at 529 Whitehead Street, across the street from the Monroe County Courthouse, a two-story red brick courthouse built in 1890. In all probability this picture represents the view from the boarding house. The courthouse survives, and still appears almost unapproachably tangled up in a welter of trees, telephone poles and electrical wires.

1938. 1 S. Gr.-4to. Rebecca (With Ephemera Signed By The Author)

The First UK Printing published by Gollancz in 1938. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Light pushing and fading at the spine ends. Robert Gibbings 'The Book Society' bookplate to the front pastedown. Some light toning to the text-block and end papers. The pages are remarkably clean and free from the usual foxing that is commonly encountered with this title. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Mild edge-wear with a little loss at the spine ends and folds. Some professional tissue paper repairs on the verso to a few closed tears mainly on the folds. The wrapper colouring remains very good with a little fading to the spine and looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The books accompanied by a loose 12 x 9 cm colour photograph of the author in there garden. This has been Signed twice by the Author on the verso and on the sleeve portion of the photograph. Housed in a custom solander box with gilt titling. Filmed memorably by Hitchcock in 1940 and starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. A very attractive example of an increasingly difficult title to find in collectible condition.
