        The Scourge of God].

Dom Knigi Paris 1938 - Octavo (20 × 15 cm). [5], 122, [6] pp., frontispiece portrait of the author, unsigned preface. Original pictorial wrappers (most likely by Elizaveta Kruglikova), lower spine strip with small tears, a few minor spots to front wrapper. The posthumous first edition of Russian writer Evgeniy Zamyatin's last novel, which compares the Soviet threat to Europe to Attila's threat to Rome. "Attila's Huns are young and healthy, and they bring the promise of new life through the destruction of a sick and dying civilization. The tenor of the story recalls the message of Blok in 1918, that the West is doomed and that some new order, or at least epoch, is advancing from the East. This was no doubt partly due to Zamyatin's disillusionment with the West, where he had emigrated in 1931" (Boris Thomson, 101). Zamyatin worked on the novel from 1928 to 1935, but it remained unfinished at the time of his death. According to Savine, issued in a very small print run, with all numbered copies; the present copy is unnumbered. A novel by Georgy Ivanov ("Raspad atoma") published by the same publisher in 1938 was issued in only 200 copies. Savine further relates that much of the print run was destroyed after the German occupation of Paris in 1940, when the owner of the publishing house, M. S. Kagan, was arrested. Zamyatin (1884 - 1937) rebelled all his life against the establishment not only in his literary works but also in his actions. Due to his association with opposition groups, he was arrested and sent to exile already before the Revolution, in 1906 and 1914. After a wave of destructive criticism and expulsion from Soyuz Pisateley [the Union of Writers] that followed Zamyatin's attempts to publish his celebrated novel "We", he asked Stalin in his letter in 1931 for permission to emigrate, which was subsequently granted. In 1934 already residing in Paris, he was accepted back to Soyuz Pisateley SSSR, which was an unprecedented case. Brus was the co-founder in 1964 of Viennese Actionism (German: Wiener Aktionismus) together with Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch, and Rudolf Schwarzkogler. His aggressively presented actionism intentionally disregarded conventions and taboos with the intent of shocking the viewer. Sentenced to 6 months in prison after the Kunst und Revolution event at the University of Vienna in 1968, he fled to Berlin with his family and returned to Austria in 1976. Brus urinated into a glass then proceeded to cover his body in his own excrement, and ended the piece by drinking his own urine. During the performance Brus also sang the Austrian National Anthem while masturbating. Brus ended the piece by vomiting and was subsequently arrested. Through this piece and his other performance works, Brus hoped to reveal the still fascist essence of the nation. Brus also was editor of the Schastrommel (author's edition) from 1969 on.

Australia and New Guinea Photograph/Collage/Poetry Albums by "The Vagabond"

1938. Very good condition. Two unusually artistic photograph albums filled with collage photographic images of New South Wales, the South coast, and New Guinea. Adorned with poetry, philosophy, wit and wisdom, and the author's personal commentary written in gold ink to accompany the photographs of a man identifying himself as 'The Vagabond', in his travels through Australia and New Guinea in 1936 and 1938. The author of these albums is unidentified except by his pseudonym. There are several snapshots of the man, who looks to be in his 50's or 60's, or lived hard in the years he's wearing. Several of the poems give us clues that he is an American, working and traveling in Australia in 1936 and 1938. "I've swum the Colorado where it runs down near to hell, I've been jerked around with many a locoed (?) cow I've mixed it with some tough Guys down along the Rio Grande But You ought to get an eyeful of me now. The Vagabond" The albums are inscribed to two different women - 'Bettie' in 1936 and 'Margie' in 1938. The album inscribed to Marge ends with his portrait and this poem: "Dear Marge I have sweltered in the Tropics And knew Alaskan snow And rode with Pancho Villa Years ago in Mexico Swallowed in the ... Was with Chiang in old ... And here I am in Waterfall Just look me over now. Ever yours, The Vagabond. 23/3/38 So Long Marge, someday, someplace on another Star, I'll be seeing you, L'il Pal" In total, 118 b&w commercial photographs that have been artfully torn, edged in gold and collaged with caption and verse in gold ink to make each page a work of art. These images are from Samuel Wood's postcard series, as ascertained by some of the captions & postcard numbers which remain visible. The images are mostly views of Sydney, including the harbor, Rushcutters Bay, Kirribilli Point, Neutral Bay, Apsmans, Mosman's Bay, botanical gardens, Hyde Park, Government House, squares and memorials, street scenes, St. Mary's Cathedral, and "the bridge that ruined a beautiful harbor"; Palm Beach, Balmoral Beach, Adelaide Dam, Burrinjuck Dam, scenic views of the Hawkesbury River, the bush, Kiama Blowhole, Fitzroy Waterfall, Careel Head; two Aboriginal boys with boomerang and wooden spear, native warriors with scarring, and a tribal chief; animals such as kangaroos with the caption: 'A kangaroo is an attempt of Nature to produce a safe pedestrian,' koalas, kookaburras, and non-native animals at the Sydney Zoo; New Guinea: Malay Bear, a "sheik" of New Guinea (prince), native boat race, 'A New Guinea Belle' with the caption: 'You may talk about your flappers in the good old USA, but just get an eyeful of 'em from down New Guinea way', Port Moresby. Additionally, there is a 4pp greeting card loosely inserted into the larger album inscribed to 'Margie' and entitled, "Aborigianalities From Australia" with 5 photos edged in gold of an aboriginal man and the caption 'King Billy of "The Mookii"' and a short poem by "The Vagabond". The handmade card measures 3.75 x 6". The poem inside the card indicates a personal relationship with "King Billy." "Staunch as his build in his Friendships- Bitter in hates beside And he helped the Luck - of the Vagabond - When the luck of the Vagabond died. The Vagabond" There are 27 vernacular photographs taken by the author, including three of aborigines. Commercially available photograph albums, black card covers, string bound, with embossed covers, the smaller from 1936 (10 x 7"), 24 leaves (images on both sides), horses and chariot on front; the larger from 1938 (12.5 x 9.25"), 15 leaves, embossed with a rugby scene. Photos range in size approximately from under 1 x 1" to 3.5 x 5.5". Covers slightly bumped/rubbed at corners, dusty but altogether very good condition. The smaller album has one chip at bottom edge of back cover. Interior very clean and neat, written in gold ink, faded on some pages but legible. An extraordinary piece of folk art.

        Arms and the Covenant.

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd,, 1938. Compiled by Randolph S. Churchill. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt within triple fillet gilt, rule to front board in blind, top edge blue. Portrait frontispiece. First edition, only printing. Presentation copy from Churchill to the celebrated journalist Hannen Swaffer, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Hannen Swaffer from Winston S. Churchill, January 1939" and almost certainly presented on or near 8 January, when "Churchill gave a long interview to the Daily Herald, during which he and Hannen Swaffer discussed the First World War. The lesson to be learned, Churchill told Swaffer, was that in peace and war 'it is the good cause that really matters'. In the first world war the people turned on the autocratic countries, Russia, Austria and Germany, whereas in 'haggard France' and in 'war stricken Britain', the people 'were more resolute at the end than they were at the beginning'. The same was true today, Churchill argued, telling Swaffer: 'If the Democracies are prepared to die rather than become slaves and to see the loss of all the fruits of the centuries, they will remain unconquered.' If the dictators realised this, Churchill added, the matter might never be put to the proof" (Martin Gilbert, Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years, 2012, p. 246). Arms and the Covenant is an important collection of Churchill's speeches, warning of the dangers of a re-armed Germany. A contemporary review in the journal of the Royal Institute for International Affairs remarked that "apart from their literary graces" Churchill's speeches were remarkable because of "the restraint of their language" in view of the "blunders and inaccuracies" of the Government and for his technical mastery: "There seems to be nothing from Naval Strategy to the jigs and tools in an aircraft factory... on which Mr. Churchill is not an expert." Swaffer (1879-1962) - an almost exact contemporary of Churchill - "often wrote wisely, sometimes like a wiseacre, and always in a clear, homely style. His habit of pontificating on many subjects led him to be termed, to his deep satisfaction, the Pope of Fleet Street. He did not look the part, his appearance suggesting an actor of Sir Henry Irving's day: he wore a wide-brimmed black felt hat, black stock, high collar, dark flowing locks, and a melancholy expression. A kind and witty man, he was known by close friends to be shy under his mask of defiant self-confidence. In his prime Swaffer was said to write nearly a million words a year. He was described at a gathering in his honour as the greatest reporter of the era and an immortal of his own time" (ODNB). Also included is a collection of contemporary and near-contemporary related correspondence to Swaffer that reflect his exceptional position at the nexus of politics and social life during the 40s and 50s: 16 autograph or typed letters signed (including one from Harold Laski) and one telegram (from Lord Beaverbrook) plus 4 other pieces (envelopes etc). The outstanding pieces among them being a short typed letter signed (one page, on 10 Downing Street stationery corrected to "Berlin", dated 30 July 1945, with integral envelope) from Clement Attlee: "My dear Swaffer, Very many thanks for your kind letter. We have an immense task before us, but I believe we can cope with it if we get the right spirit of comradeship in our great adventure. Yours ever, Clem". A brief but very evocative letter written only four days after the Labour landslide of 1945 that projected Attlee to Prime Minister (polling had taken place on 5 July but the results were counted and declared on 26 July, owing partly to the time it took to transport the votes of those serving overseas). Attlee was a senior member of the British delegation at the Potsdam Conference and his letter to Swaffer (himself a "man of the left") refers, with typical humility, to the Labour victory. The other is by Somerset Maugham (one page, on Villa Mauresque stationery, dated 24 December [no year]): "My dear Hannen, Thank you for your grand elegy. The last two lines are perfect. Clever old stick that you are! Yours always Wm. S". Maugham would have known Swaffer from the latter's time as drama critic of the Daily Express. A striking association copy that links Churchill and one of the foremost British journalists of the period set against the background of impending war.

8 Dec. 1938, New York - Superb and touching one-page letter in Kent's minuscule hand to his 25-year-old daughter Clara expressing his disappointment that she will not be spending Christmas with him. In full: "It was about 12 years ago when, out of consideration for your mother, I gave up claiming my family for Christmas Day and set New Years Day as our day for Christmas celebration. That this gave you children two Christmases we hoped was doubly nice for you; and that it gave us Christmas--though a week later--with my children was a happiness that we planned for and looked forward to. Only the absence far from home of Frances [his second wife whom he would divorce in 1939] or me or both of us has made a New Years' pass uncelebrated as the family Christmas. All this you know. And that, knowing it, you pass up your father's Christmas for a New Year at a friend's is something that I will not forget nor easily forgive. That Frances is deeply hurt at your 'previous engagement' when after two years of enforced absence she is at last home again and eager to make a Christmas for us all, is something I have read in her face as she read your letter. That is all I know about it. I will now wish you both a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year." SIGNED "Affectionately Father." The mixture of sadness and restrained anger is quite evident in this scarce and very personal autograph letter by one of the most famous American artists of the twentieth century. The bulk of Kent's papers were donated to the Smithsonian. Normal creases from folding, about Fine [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Document signed

1938 - ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. Document signed. Washington: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1938. Folio, single sheet (measures 9 by 13-1/2 inches) partially printed and completed in typescript on recto and verso, embossed red paper seal. $6500.Scarce 1938 official presidential pardon signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Attorney General Homer Cummings, granting a pardon to Louis Pettofrezzo (aka Louis Fritz), who pled guilty three times, from 1927-32, to charges of "possessing and selling intoxicating liquor in violation of the National Prohibition Act." Pettofrezzo's nephew by marriage, Albert Rosellini""a young "progressive cut from the same cloth as Franklin Delano Roosevelt""led opposition in Washington state to Prohibition-era 'blue laws' and was elected to the state's senate in 1938, the same year FDR signed this pardon, serving until he became the state's 15th governor in 1957.This scarce official presidential document, signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt in his second term of office, pardons Louis Pettofrezzo, "also known as Louis Fritz," for the crime of "possessing and selling intoxicating liquor, in violation of the National Prohibition Act" on three occasions: in 1927, 1929, and 1932. Having paid fines and costs, and served a prison sentence from 1932 to 1933, in 1938 FDR signed this official pardon, additionally signed by his Attorney General, Homer Cummings. In 1932, the same year Pettofrezzo committed his third infraction and began his prison sentence, he married Fine Gasperetti Rosellini, widow of Seattle restaurant owner Vittorio Rosellini, whose brother Giovanni was the father of lawyer Albert Rosellini. Albert "went to work as an attorney in 1933. In that role, he forged lifelong ties to liquor distributors and tavern owners by representing them in challenges to Prohibition-era restrictions known as 'blue laws" (Seattle Times). He "considered himself a progressive cut from the same cloth as Franklin Delano Roosevelt," and was a senator in the Washington State Senate for nearly two decades before serving as the state's governor from 1957-65 (Washington Business Magazine). This official signed document reads: (print) "Franklin D.
