The first English-language edition of Laughter in the Dark appeared in England under the title Camera Obscura in 1936 but Nabokov so disliked the translation (by Winifred Roy) that he decided to produce his own translation for the U.S. edition."Laughter in the Dark is one of the finest works of Vladimir Nabokov's early Russian-language period, a dazzling, cinematic masterpiece, beautiful, cruel and horribly funny.       Cleveland The J. B. Savage Company 1938 Exceptionally scarce First Issue with F. A. I. banner end papers, one of fewer than 100 copies from a limited edition of 1000 copies, of which this is number 116. (Hemingway so disliked the original orange end papers showing soldiers advancing beneath the flag of the Federación Anarquista Ibérica, or F. A. I, one of the pro-Republican belligerents in the Spanish Civil War, that after an estimated 50 to 100 copies were bound (so reported by the publisher in a letter to Hanneman) the endpapers were changed to plain.) Illustrated by Frederick K. Russell, with introduction by Jasper Wood. Small, slim 8vo: 60pp, with 7 full-page original charcoal drawings. Publisher's tan linen cloth, front cover lettered in black and decorated in orange, spine lettered in black, printed throughout in black on tan Linweave paper, absent the original glassine jacket (fresh one added). A superlative copy, covers and spine almost pristine with barest hint of toning; tightly bound text, fresh and bright; superb illustrations. Hanneman A15a. Fine ¶ Text of the narration for the sound track that Hemingway contributed to the 1938 film of the same name, about the Spanish Civil War, which broke out in 1936 with a military uprising in Morocco on July 17, triggered by events in Madrid. Within days, Spain was divided in two: a "Republican," or "Loyalist," Spain consisting of the Second Spanish Republic (within which were pockets of revolutionary anarchism and Trotskyism), and a "Nationalist" Spain under the insurgent generals and, eventually, under the leadership of General Francisco Franco. "Late in 1936, while Hemingway was working on To Have and Have Not, the North American Newspaper Alliance offered to hire him to report on the civil war being fought in Spain. The literary fruits of this undertaking, in addition to the news stories Hemingway produced to fulfill his contract, were the script for the narration of a pro-Republic documentary film, The Spanish Earth; a relatively unsuccessful play, The Fifth Column (published with his collected stories as The Fifth Column and the First Forty-nine Stories); a handful of short stories about wartime Spain, and his most successful novel in more than a decade, For Whom the Bell Tolls." (Literary Encyclopedia) The Spanish Earth was published by a precocious Cleveland high-school student named Jasper Wood, who was so moved on seeing the film that he convinced Hemingway to allow publication of the text. Fewer than a hundred copies were bound (this first issue is a notable Hemingway rarity) before Wood made the change to plain tan end papers (the second issue). N. B.         A Ship of the Line

      Michael Joseph 1938 - C.S. Forester offered a powerful protagonist in Captain Horatio Hornblower and his Hornblower series with good writing detail that provides authenticity, and good stories that live on in the reader's head. In 1927, C.S. Forester purchased three volumes of The Naval Chronicle from 1790 to 1820. For the Chronicle, officers of the Royal Navy wrote articles on strategy, seamanship, gunnery, and other professional topics of interest to their colleagues. The Chronicle for those years covered the wars with Napoleon. Forester, a former medical student-turned-writer had plotted "The Happy Return" (First Hornblower Novel, Issued in the US as "Beat to Quarters"), published in 1937. "A Ship of the Line" and "Flying Colours" were published soon after in 1938. Forester's interest in the Romantic period and the political and military maneuvers of the early 1800's continued, and the Hornblower saga was produced. This is the extremely rare second book of the series since production was limited as the publisher had planned to release a separate edition that bundled "A Ship of the Line" with "Flying Colours." "Flying Colours" was released after the double volume. It became almost a ritual for Mr. Forester to announce after each Hornblower book that it would be his last. "We have said goodbye to each other and meant it a dozen times at least," he remarked in 1957. The novelist had left a manuscript of the last Hornblower novel in a bank vault with instructions that it be published only after his death. In this novel, which is the 12th in the series, the irascible, resourceful master of fighting sail dies. This second book of the series is in very good condition with clean pages and its original dust-wrapper showing some edge-wear and tiny bit of spotting to the back only.       1938. An exceptional complete set of 454 manuscript and typescript leaves with copious corrections and deletions, being an early version of Thomas l'Obscur, which sheds light on the process of the composition of the work based on the earlier typescript:  Thomas le Solitaire [Thomas the Solitary]. The document is made up of two states: a manuscript of 275 leaves, and a collection of 179 leaves composed of 132 leaves of the typescript (entirely corrected) of Thomas le Solitaire, and 47 inserted manuscript leaves.The 275-page manuscript finishes with a reference to the typescript-manuscript document, which itself has a double ending, for Thomas le Solitaire (typescript) and the end of Thomas l'Obscur (manuscript).It would appear that the typescript-manuscript is a first step in the work leading up to the manuscript proper, but together with it forms an inseparable whole since the references from one to the other are constant. The pages of the manuscript in fact regularly contain cross-references to the typescript-manuscript and the sequence of pages is interrupted several times to include the numbering of the typescript-manuscript.The manuscript version, as well as the typescript-manuscript version both show significant differences from the published version (which appeared in 1941). Some passages from the text of Thomas le Solitaire are still included in the manuscript and variances with the published novel are manifold.  This important document, therefore, marks a key moment in the work of the author, where the novel was still in full-blown development.This unique set undoubtedly constitutes the most important source of information on the development of the novels of one of the most closed-off writers of the 20th century after Kafka. 1938 13,5x21cm et 21x27cm 454 feuillets dont 322 manuscrits

      London, Geoffrey Bles. 1938. First edition text in second state cloth (black lettering), effectively the First cheap Edition. 8vo. Fine in publisher's bright red cloth. 310pp. Internally fresh and clean. Clad in either a cheap edition or colonial variation of the dustwrapper bearing a Reginald Saunders [Toronto] publishing label applied to the spine. Wrapper chipped to extremities with some loss to head and tail of spine, with an additional small triangle of loss to the lower edge of the back panel. Wrapper nevertheless clean and fresh. Dame Ngaio Marsh is best known for her 32 detective novels published between 1934 and 1982, all featuring Inspector Alleyn. Along with Agatha Christie, Margery Allingham and Dorothy L. Sayers, she was classed as one of the four original 'Queens of Crime' - female British crime writers who dominated the crime fiction genre of the 1930s and 1940s. Of the four, her work shows the greatest depth of characterisation, and often carries a vein of humour.

Book is fine but for watermark to top edge- jacket is very good; a little spotted to upper, spine toned with snipped price as mentioned. The first edition comprised only 5000 copies. This example in the EARLIEST STATE dust jacket of pale blue, published June 1938; The 1940 remainder issue (original binding) is wrapped in a reset yellow jacket. The US version, entitled 'While England Slept' was not published until late September 1938. Langworth p192.

Eye-catching pictorial map proudly proclaiming America's passion for college football, with a "Key to Official College Nicknames" with 140 listings (lower centre of map). On the verso is a listing of The Albert Richard All-American Team of the 1937 season, and the reader is invited to "join in selecting this year's Albert Richard All-American Team - to share in awarding this honor to football's outstanding stars of 1938."Also on the verso are illustrations and descriptions of rugged outerwear from this manufacturer of men's clothing. Albert Richard Co. published this series of football maps from the late 1930s to early 1950s, all brightly colored and full of information for the football fan. These pictorial map posters combine great graphics with fascinating information and an interesting historical spin. In fact the 1941 map in the series is documented in "Eyes of the Nation: A Visual History of the United States" (2004) by Vincent Virga and Alan Brinkley: "Derived from the nineteenth-century English games of soccer and rugby, American football emerged as an inter-collegiate sport in the 1870s and as a professional sport in the 1890s. This pictorial map demonstrates how popular football had become by the beginning of World War II. With a primary emphasis on the collegiate side of the sport, with team nicknames, 1940 season records, and major conference championships, it also documents the major professional clubs - only ten at the time. The map carries the endorsement of the noted sports writer Grantland Rice, and reports his selections for the 1940 All-America team."...

First U.S. edition; issued in the same format as the U.K. edition and published the following year. This fantasy tale has become a modern children's classic and continues the story of Aladdin, describing how Aladdin's son goes on a quest to release a magician from a spell. Interestingly Beatrix Potter referred to 'The Land of Green Ginger' as the setting for her story The Fairy Caravan (1929). Noel Langley was a South-African born playwright and novelist who, interestingly, wrote the screenplay for the M.G.M. adaptation of Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

      Chicago. Colortext Publications, 1938. Color bird's eye view pictorial map, 15 1/2 x 20 5/8 inches (39 x 52 cm) on sheet 17 x 22 inches. Metal hanging strips to upper and lower edge as issued. Light dampstaining to left margin, image in very good, bright condition. A fascinating bird's eye view of the city with ninety four businesses / buildings numbered on the map and identified in the legend at lower left. Many more are named on the map. The more significant buildings are rendered in detail providing a magnificent account of the city just before World War II. The city is a hub of activity: a plane flies at upper left, two trains head into the city from the northwest and ships ply Lake Michigan. The map is artistically rendered in lithography by C.L. Hawkins. The view is from the east, stretching from the South Shore Country Club in the south along the lake to the Edgewater Beach Hotel in the north. On the horizon are the suburbs of Frankfort, La grange, Leyden, and the Curtiss Reynold Airport. DePaul University Library in Chicago is the only holding library listed on WorldCat.

Chavée inscribed this copy at the time of publication to Julien Levy, the important international promoter of Surrealist art. Number 138 of only 185 copies on papier vergé. A rare title by the Belgian surrealist (1906-1969) who was one of the founders of RUPTURE and his second publication under the RUPTURE imprint. RUPTURE and Chavée received initial encouragement from Breton and Eluard, and Chavée remained a leading figure in the postwar Belgian avant-garde. Thus, a superb association copy. The printed wrapper is detached from the text block and in good condition only with a water stain along a portion of the spine extending slightly onto the front and rear panels. The text is largely unopened with some light foxing on the preliminary panels, but unmarked except for the inscription on the front blank. Note that the entire text is in the French language.         Birds And Beasts In Africa, and The Angler In South Africa.

Pair of Baden-Powell association copies, with a letter of authenticity from the scout association: 1) The Angler In South Africa. Inscribed "To The Chief Scout" by H.V. Marsh, the Assistant Commissioner of Natal during Baden-Powell's trip to South Africa in 1926. Octavo, pp.190. Bound in publisher's gray cloth over card boards, titles in black to upper and spine. With 34 photographic plate illustrations, and a fold-out appendix of fish, where they can be found, and what baits are most suitable for catching them. Binding shows some bumping to spine ends, case slightly shaken, spine sunned, rear joint showing a little gauze. Internally clean, with no signs of spotting. Marsh's ink inscription appears on the front flyleaf. 2) Birds and Beasts In Africa. Inscribed to "Miss Southey" from Baden-Powell, in thanks for work done for him in Nyeri, 1940. Octavo, pp.169. Bound in publisher's cream cloth, recased with top of spine laid down, black stamped African figure and titles in red to upper, titles in red to spine. Illustrated with colour frontispiece, seven other colour plates, and numerous in-text black and white illustrations. Cloth binding is a little tanned, with some bumping to corners. Internally clean, minor tanning to prelims, Baden-Powell's ink inscription to half title.An extraordinary pair of volumes, given to and given by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, adventurer and founder of the Scouts. H.V. Marsh was a prominent figure in the South African Scout movement, so much so that in 1963 the South African Scout Association founded the "The H V Marsh Award for Scout Journalism". The letter which accompanies the two volumes, from the Scout Association Archives, describes The Angler in South Africa as 'a most appropriate book' - because 'if [Baden-Powell] had a spare moment during his busy life he liked to fish'. Without wishing to speculate too far, since Baden-Powell addresses Birds And Beasts In South Africa simply to "Miss Southey", there are several potential candidates amongst the descendants of Sir Richard Southey (1808-1901), first Treasurer and then Colonial Secretary in Natal. The dating of the gift is also interesting as Baden-Powell was to die in Nyeri the following year, in 1941. By this time, Nyeri had become associated with the Happy Valley set, which included Lady Idina Sackville, the infamous Jock Delves Broughton, and a number of other aristocrats.

      Gollancz, 1938 A first edition, first printing published by Gollancz in 1938. A very good+ book without inscriptions. A signature cut SIGNED by the Author (with best wishes) to the front pastedown. Some light wear to the edges, but a very clean copy. In a dust wrapper which has benefitted from some light restoration to the spine ends and corners and now presents as a very good example indeed.         Finite Approximations to Lie Groups; The Extensions of a Group.

      Princeton; Groningen: University Press; Noordhoff, 1938; 1938. First edition, the extremely rare offprint issues, and with a fine provenance, of the two papers on group theory written by Turing at Princeton under the supervision of John Von Neumann. Offprints of Turing's papers are extremely rare in institutional holdings, and even more so in commerce. We have located only two other copies of the first offprint and one of the second: a copy of each in the Turing Archive at King's College, Cambridge (AMT/B/13 and AMT/B/14), and a copy of the first in the Max Newman collection (now at Bletchley Park). As far as we are aware, the latter is the only other copy of either offprint to have appeared in commerce. Turing's undergraduate tutor at King's College, Cambridge was the group theorist Philip Hall; this probably explains why the first three of Turing's published papers were on group theory. His first paper "was a small and easily stated advance on a recent theorem of von Neumann's. The latter had defined two notions of 'left' and 'right' periodicity but had missed the fact that they are equivalent. Turing proved this, and it appeared as a two page paper in April 1935 ['Equivalence of left and right almost periodicity,' Journal of the London Mathematical Society, Vol. 10, 1935]. By coincidence von Neumann arrived on a sabbatical visit from Princeton that month and proceeded to lecture on the subject; it is from this time that the two must have been acquainted" (Welch, p. 3). The next two years were spent working on his great paper on the 'Entscheidungsproblem,' including the introduction of the 'universal Turing machine'. The Entscheidungsproblem had been solved slightly earlier by Alonzo Church, and with both Church and von Neumann at Princeton it was natural for Turing to visit Princeton, which he did in 1937. Once there, and under von Neumann's direction, Turing attacked "a problem suggested by the emigré Polish mathematician S. Ulam: that of asking whether continuous groups could be approximated by finite groups, rather like approximating a sphere by polyhedra. Von Neumann had passed the problem to Alan, who successfully dealt with it by April, when it was submitted. This was fast work, although as he had shown that continuous groups could not in general be approximated in this way, it was a rather negative result" (Hodges, pp.129-130). The actual result proved by Turing is described by Max Newman as follows. "If a (connected) Lie group L can, for arbitrary ? > 0, be ?-approximated by a finite group whose multiplication law is an ?-approximation to that of L, in the sense that the two products of any two elements are withinof each other, then L must be both compact and abelian" (Newman, p. 258). The second offered paper "concerns the problem of determining the extensions of a given group G by a given group H inducing given classes of automorphisms" (Welch, p. 10). "This was an important contribution to the theory of extensions of a not necessarily Abelian group as it stood at that time" (J. L. Britton in Collected Works: Pure Mathematics, p. xi). On the strength of these two papers von Neumann offered Turing a post-doctoral position at Princeton, but he declined and returned to Cambridge in the summer of 1938 to resume his Fellowship. Although there are no ownership marks, these offprints are from the working library of Robin Gandy. "[Gandy's] interest in [mathematical logic] commenced through his wartime acquaintance with Alan Turing as far back as 1944. His twin interests in the foundations of science and mathematics were fostered by Turing. These interests moulded a career which always seemed larger than his publication list, although that grew in diversity with the years to include some seminal papers. Initially, he read widely and published little, but around 1960 he started to produce the major results which made him an international figure in the theory of abstract recursion and in effective, descriptive set theory. There were also major conceptual innovations such as the theory of inductive definitions, and a plethora of ingenious intricate proofs in different corners of the subject. He wrote papers on many areas of logic and was much in demand as a reviewer of books on the foundations of mathematics and science. He remained active and productive and was a familiar figure at international conferences until his sad and unexpected death (from an aortic rupture) on November 20th, 1995. "He was born on September 22nd, 1919, in Peppard, Oxfordshire, where his father, Thomas Gandy, was in general practice. His mother Ida Gandy earned a reputation for a sequence of books based on her early life in Wiltshire. Educated at Abbotsholme, a progressive public school, he went on to join that special elite at King's College, Cambridge, intellectual home of such famous names as E. M. Forster the novelist, J. Maynard Keynes the economist - and Alan Turing. He met Turing at a party in 1940 (Gandy's graduation year) but their early wartime careers were separate. Gandy was commissioned in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and became an expert on military radio and radar, whilst Turing joined the cryptanalysts at Bletchley Park. They were brought together at Hanslope Park in 1944 to work on a speech decipherment system, christened 'Delilah' at Gandy's suggestion because it was intended to be a "deceiver of men". "Their friendship continued after the war, back at King's College where Turing had resumed his fellowship. Gandy took Part III of the Mathematical Tripos with distinction, then began studying for a PhD under Turing's supervision; his successful thesis on the logical foundation of physics ("On axiomatic systems in mathematics and theories in physics") was presented in 1953 and can now be seen as a bridge between his wartime expertise and later career. When Turing died in 1954 he left his mathematical books and papers to Gandy, who, in 1963, took over from Max Newman the task of editing the papers for publication" (Moschovakis & Yates, pp. 367-8).         Australia and New Guinea Photograph/Collage/Poetry Albums by "The Vagabond"

      1938 - Two unusually artistic photograph albums filled with collage photographic images of New South Wales, the South coast, and New Guinea. Adorned with poetry, philosophy, wit and wisdom, and the author's personal commentary written in gold ink to accompany the photographs of a man identifying himself as 'The Vagabond', in his travels through Australia and New Guinea in 1936 and 1938. The author of these albums is unidentified except by his pseudonym. There are several snapshots of the man, who looks to be in his 50's or 60's, or lived hard in the years he's wearing. Several of the poems give us clues that he is an American, working and traveling in Australia in 1936 and 1938. "I've swum the Colorado where it runs down near to hell, I've been jerked around with many a locoed (?) cowI've mixed it with some tough Guys down along the Rio GrandeBut You ought to get an eyeful of me now.The Vagabond" The albums are inscribed to two different women - 'Bettie' in 1936 and 'Margie' in 1938. The images are mostly views of Sydney, including the harbor, Rushcutters Bay, Kirribilli Point, Neutral Bay, Apsmans, Mosman's Bay, botanical gardens, Hyde Park, Government House, squares and memorials, street scenes, St. Mary's Cathedral, and "the bridge that ruined a beautiful harbor"; Palm Beach, Balmoral Beach, Adelaide Dam, Burrinjuck Dam, scenic views of the Hawkesbury River, the bush, Kiama Blowhole, Fitzroy Waterfall, Careel Head; two Aboriginal boys with boomerang and wooden spear, native warriors with scarring, and a tribal chief; animals such as kangaroos with the caption: 'A kangaroo is an attempt of Nature to produce a safe pedestrian,' koalas, kookaburras, and non-native animals at the Sydney Zoo; New Guinea: Malay Bear, a "sheik" of New Guinea (prince), native boat race, 'A New Guinea Belle' with the caption: 'You may talk about your flappers in the good old USA, but just get an eyeful of 'em from down New Guinea way', Port Moresby.Additionally, there is a 4pp greeting card loosely inserted into the larger album inscribed to 'Margie' and entitled, "Aborigianalities From Australia" with 5 photos edged in gold of an aboriginal man and the caption 'King Billy of "The Mookii"' and a short poem by "The Vagabond". Photos range in size approximately from under 1 x 1" to 3.5 x 5.5". Covers slightly bumped/rubbed at corners, dusty but altogether very good condition. The smaller album has one chip at bottom edge of back cover. Interior very clean and neat, written in gold ink, faded on some pages but legible. An extraordinary piece of folk art.       Secker, 1938 A first edition, first printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1938. A fine book with minuscule rubbing. There is no bumping to corners. The endpapers have a little of the usual offsetting. No inscriptions. A superb copy. In the rare dust wrapper priced correctly at 10s 6d net to the inside flap. Some light loss to the head of the spine (not affecting any lettering) and tiny triangular losses at foot of spine and at corner to the in-flaps. Not price-clipped and the off-white rear panel is lovely and clean. The spine is not tanned (as with most copies). There is a small round mark to the inside flap of the wrapper where a small price label appears to have been removed leaving a trace of gum residue. A remarkable copy of an extremely important and influential work that significantly enhanced Orwell's reputation. The copy of this book is from the very small first edition print run of 1,250 copies. Accompanied by a modern dark green grained buckram slip-case with the 'George Orwell' in gilt titles to the side.[removed][removed]

        Rebecca - One of 200 Special Presentation Editions

      Gollancz, 1938 A first edition, first printing published by Gollancz in 1938. Some foxing to the prelims (title, half title) and to the page edges. Marked 'Special Presentation Edition' to the title page as called for. Gollancz wanted to publish 'Rebecca' quickly before the onset of World War Two. Du Maurier sent her final manuscript to the publishers in April 1938. The book was then published in August 1938, the Book Society Choice for August followed, and did the Literary Guild Choice for October 1938. By the 15th of October, 'Rebecca' had sold 50,000 copies and 72,000 by the 25th of May 1939 (Simons & Fullbrook 1998). Sir Victor Gollancz wanted to increase sales pressure, so in November 1938 printed 200 'Special Presentation Editions' which he sent to the 'Principal Rajars of the Book Trade' (ibid) to 'act as a kind of appetiser (.) receiving a special edition will flatter them and this is the first time we have ever issued a special edition' The Cheap edition was printed on the 24th July of 1939 'a few days before the anniversary of its first publication'.       Doubleday Doran, 1938 A first edition, first printing published by Doubleday Doran in 1938. Covers a little rubbed, rubber-stamped with 'property of Selznick International pictures Inc.' and 'story department' on the front endpaper and repeated on the title page. Inscribed in pencil on front endpaper 'No. 2 marked copy'. Pencilled notes and stamps on endpapers. A substantial number of passages have been underlined or marked in pencil throughout, while there are also a number of marginal notes in pencil. Two of the more interesting notes: on page 4: 'I think we must work out a photographic and musical introduction that is the equivalent of this chapter - both to set the key of our picture (as this does of the book) and to satisfy, at the outset, the book's lovers of our intentions of faithfulness' . And on page 23: 'All excellent without change as to dialogue, business, construction, up to here'. The book was originally sold in an auction in South Kensington late in 1983 as one of a group of books, mainly Hugh Walpole novels inscribed by the author to David O. Selznick. Given the notes within the book, we can assume this is Selznick's personal copy and as such is a marvellous film and literary connection, especially as Selznick gave Alfred Hitchcock this as his first film under contract. Selznick's wish was to remain true to the novel and this is echoed in the notes on page 23. The film was released in 1940 and won Hitchcock his first Oscar. The book presented here is accompanied by an original poster from the Selznick studios from that year. A marvellous association copy and one which would sit very well in any Du Maurier/Hitchcock collection.[removed][removed]

Darüber müssen wir uns klar sein; das war nun nur einmal und wird in der Geschichte Deutschlands und aller Völker einzigartig dastehen und ist durch nichts zu ersetzen, und damit sind auch die Männer, die aus diesem Kampf als die endgültigen Führer des neuen Deutschlands hervorgegangen sind, einmalig und einzigartig. Es galt nun, diese Erkenntnis in den Mitgliedern der NSDAP immer wieder und von neuem wachzuhalten und die Führer der Partei, Politische Leiter, SA-, SS-, NSKK- und Hitler-Jugendführer auf die nun kommende Phase des Kampfes um Deutschland vorzubereiten und auszurichten. Um es klar zu sagen, dieser Kampf um Deutschland ist erst dann beendigt, wenn der letzte anständige Deutsche Nationalsozialist geworden ist und die nationalsozialistische Weltanschauung im Volk so verankert ist, daß für Jahrhunderte und Jahrtausende niemand anders den Anspruch auf die geistige Führung Deutschlands erheben kann als die Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei\" / \"Wir werden Ihren Charakter, Ihren Mut und Ihre Disziplin immer wieder prüfen. Though it went unrecognized at the time, in 1938, 30 years before Higgs, Ernst Carl Gerlach Stueckelberg (1905-1984) proposed a theory of QED with a massive photon (called "Stueckelberg action") that is an early version (now considered a special case) of the Higgs mechanism. In Parts II and III of the paper, Stueckelberg papers also proposed the conservation of baryon number. Taking the work of the Dirac, Fock, Podolsky paper "as his starting point, Stueckelberg gave a formulation of quantum electrodynamics and of various meson theories in what later became known as the interaction picture. Using dimensional arguments, Stueckelberg estimated the cross-sections for the photo-effect and the Compton effect of mesons" " (Schweber, QED and the Men who Made it, 577). Although "these were the only quantitative results that [Stueckelberg] drew from his theory: he predicted a preference for the photo-effect in the case of low-energy Yukawa particles and for the Compton effect at higher energies" (ibid). Stueckelberg stressed its advantages, namely, the manifest covariance of the 'Schrödinger' equation in that picture, and the possibility of writing covariant commutation rules for the field operators at different times" (Schweber).       1938 1938 - Typed letter from Ruth Plumy Thompson on The Office of The Royal Historian of Oz letterhead, with notes in Thompson's hand to the margins. A very warm and chatty letter from the then current writer of the Oz stories, Ruth Plumly Thompson, who was the next writer of the series after L. Frank Baum. The letter discusses all things current in Oz, including the new titles. Thompson shares her thoughts on the plays and films: "The Wizard of Oz is being made into a musical and while I suppose they'll spoil and change everything – it may turn out better then we think. After that the Oz books will probably be used in animated cartoons – and that WILL be fun. I'm sorry Walt Disney could not get Mrs. Baum to let him have her husband's books as he was interested in doing the whole set. But as she has sold her (i.e. L.F.B's. Mr. B has been dead as you know for quite awhile) books to another studio – mine will probably have to be sold to the same people." Thompson also talks about a role she played in a play as Ozma making her a "Princess of Oz."

Contemporary black leather-grained, embossed cloth album with cord-tie at spine, hand lettered paper title and date label mounted on front cover. Slightly rubbed with some more significant edgewear, one leaf neatly cut in half - evidently purposely, ?to use as reference - both parts present and complete, a few photos a little dog-eared, some detached with occasional minor creasing, but remains very good. Tipped in at the beginning are 5 leaves of ruled ledger paper with a detailed manuscript index, page numbers lettered in red, followed by 30 leaves, mostly of thick black card stock, with a few of lighter black paper interposed, with 323 mounted original silver-gelatin photos (115 × 153 mm), many mounted on rice-paper hinges as sequential overlays to show the progress of construction work, some of these have become detached; almost all have neatly calligraphic captions in Japanese on the page, often there are inked annotations, and/or date stamps in margins of images themselves, or on verso of the hinge-mounted photos; 62 of the photos are mounted side by side, or joined together to form double-width panoramic images. Loosely inserted schedule for the Officers for the No. 9 Buntan [Division] with 18 officers and 23 NCOs overseeing the construction for the Artillery, also a small commemorative booklet dated 1931 for Japanese Navy, with a few pencil annotations and sketchy diagrams. An historically significant and fascinating album chronicling the progress of the construction of factories at Ningpo near Fuzhou for the manufacture, mixing, drying, and separation of smokeless yellow and brown gunpowder for the Imperial Japanese Kwantung Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Following their stunning victory in the Russo-Japanese War, Japan obtained control of the Kwantung Leased Area in the Liaodong Peninsula in Manchuria which was occupied by the Kwantung Garrison, in 1919 the Kwantung Army. A hotbed of the aggressive expansionist nationalist Imperial Way Faction, the Kwantung Army was implicated in a number of attempted coup d'états in Japan, and the manipulation of events in Manchuria, culminating in the Mukden Incident and invasion of Manchuria in 1931. Presented with a fait accompli on this scale, the Japanese Government had little choice but to back up the KA, providing reinforcements for the Pacification of Manchuria, resulting in the creation of the Japanese province of Manchukuo under the puppet emperor Puyi, but in fact ruled over by the local army commander. As over 150,000 Japanese settlers surged into Manchuria during the 1930s, the Kwantung Army expanded its sphere of operations and by the time of World War II would constitute a force of close to a million and a half men. This remarkable album documents Japanese efforts immensely to increase their munitions production for the Sino-Japanese War (1937-45). The project documented here was a vital part of the second five-year plan drawing on the vast mineral resources of the region. The photographs are without exception clear and sharp, evidently the work of a trained photographer, who has shot the various buildings from different directions, angles and heights - employing the water-tower to offer an over-view - and has carefully docketed, captioned, and mounted the images in the album in such ways as to produce a comprehensive view of development across the site, over time, a sort of improvised time-lapse montage. Beginning in February, 1938, the photos depict the stages of construction of the bleaching factory, the powder pellet factories, warehouses, military barracks, the drying factories, fuse construction and storage facilities, the mortar shell assembly area, as well as the mixing factory with the powder mixing vats. The album follows the progress of the development from the pouring of the foundations, through the erection of the scaffolding, and the specific construction methods of the full range of brick, concrete, and timber b

I, one of the pro-Republican belligerents in the Spanish Civil War, that after an estimated 50 to 100 copies were bound (so reported by the publisher in a letter to Hanneman) the endpapers were changed to plain.) Illustrated by Frederick K. Russell, with introduction by Jasper Wood. Small, slim 8vo: 60pp, with 7 full-page original charcoal drawings. Text of the narration for the sound track that Hemingway contributed to the 1938 film of the same name, about the Spanish Civil War, which broke out in 1936 with a military uprising in Morocco on July 17, triggered by events in Madrid. Within days, Spain was divided in two: a "Republican," or "Loyalist," Spain consisting of the Second Spanish Republic (within which were pockets of revolutionary anarchism and Trotskyism), and a "Nationalist" Spain under the insurgent generals and, eventually, under the leadership of General Francisco Franco. "Late in 1936, while Hemingway was working on To Have and Have Not, the North American Newspaper Alliance offered to hire him to report on the civil war being fought in Spain. The literary fruits of this undertaking, in addition to the news stories Hemingway produced to fulfill his contract, were the script for the narration of a pro-Republic documentary film, The Spanish Earth; a relatively unsuccessful play, The Fifth Column (published with his collected stories as The Fifth Column and the First Forty-nine Stories); a handful of short stories about wartime Spain, and his most successful novel in more than a decade, For Whom the Bell Tolls."
