Diagnoses algarum novarum. Post sylloges editionem descriptarum. I (centuriae I-XI) (AND) II (centuria I). (all published).

      - Brixia [Brescia], privately published by the author, 1937-1955. 12 parts in 12 (17.7 x 13.6 cm). 1200 pages. (Near) contemporary uniform brown cloth with gilt title on the spines.l Very rare and complete as it was privately printed "sumptibus auctoris" and divided in twelve "centuria". Published over a long period, it contains 1200 descriptions of different algae. The last published part is I(11), not II(1). It was probably published posthumously as there is a small cross printed in front of the author's printed name, Joseph [= Giuseppe] de Toni. The work was printed on peculiar thick paper. It might be regarded as a continuation of his Sylloge Algorum, published from 1889 to 1924 in six volumes. The latter is very rare too. Library stamps on the front pastedowns, otherwise a good, clean set. Stafleu and Cowan, Supplement V, 30.017. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        THE METAMORPHOSIS OF NARCISSUS

Paris: Editions Surréalistes, 1937. Signed and dated by the artist 'Salvador Dali 1958'. Dali completed his now famous oil painting 'The Metamorphosis of Narcissus' in 1937 after a long period working and touring in the United States. This is the poem that Dali composed while working on this iconic image, here published in a limited edition of 550 copies. The paper wrappers feature a photographic portrait by Cecil Beaton that further plays upon the theme self-reflection. The classical myth of Narcissus, wherein a thespian youth is unable to escape the beauty of his own reflection, held enduring appeal for Dali. For the surrealists, the myth was not merely a cautionary tale of vanity run riot but expressed a deeper metaphysical conundrum concerning the core of human consciousness. The paradox of the myth is that Narcissus was an innocent, unaware that he was staring at his own reflection. As a trope for consciousness creating itself from itself, the myth became a source of endless fascination for Dali, and this cyclical creative process forms the subject of his poem. Limited edition of 550 copies. Slim quarto, with one tipped colour plate and two in black & white; a little flaking of the spine, overall good condition.

Ensembles Mobiliers Vol.1. Exposition Internationale de 1937

Paris: Charles Moreau, 1937. A magnificent portfolio of Art Deco interiors by French designers Jean Dunand, Jean Royere, Jacques Adnet, Le Bucheron, Rinck, Louis Sognot, Andre Arbus, E. R. Lamy and others. The gentle photography and superlative collotype plates eminently suit these stylish and understated interiors. The plates are of special interest for the study of period carpets, furniture, upholstery, parquetry and other floorings: two plates illustrate remarkable large-scale lacquer murals in their settings. Ultimately the value of the portfolio is the arrangement of all components within highly premeditated interiors, capturing the atmosphere of these beautiful spaces exactly as they were intended. Folio (450x320mm), original printed portfolio with ties, 6 pages (title-page, introduction and list of designers) + 32 collotype plates, loose as issued. The portfolio is scuffed yet sound and the plates remain fine.

[Binder containing records of participation in Seattle's Chinatown Pak kop piu ("White pigeon ticket") lotteries, 1937-39]

Seattle: 1937-39. Three-ring binder with floppy leather covers, 7x9.5 inches, containing a gambler's records of his strategies (generally relying on Vedic astrology) and results at playing. There are dozens of hand-drawn astrological charts present, as well as over a hundred of the used lottery tickets, which are marked either with punched holes or grease pencil. One of these tickets is marked "Won $8890" with an astrological chart appended, identifying the "Most outstanding WIN indicator of all!" (This being a rather large amount, perhaps a decimal point was omitted?) Almost all of the materials date to 1937-39, with a couple of later items. The lottery tickets come from numerous companies, including Shang Hai Co., Union Co., Chicago Co., American Co., Boston Co., New World Co., and others. A fascinating assemblage reflecting the intersection of Chinese American gaming activity and the neighboring non-Chinese gambling community. Pak kop piu (Baige piao in Mandarin), named after the pigeons that supposedly delivered the results when the game first began in China, is described in detail in Stewart Culin's "The gambling games of the Chinese in America." Each ticket is printed with eighty Chinese characters, taken from the first lines of the Thousand Character Classic, and always arrayed in the same order. The gambler would pay to choose a group of characters, which would be marked on his ticket. If five or more of those characters were chosen in the drawing, the house would pay; the size of the reward depended on the number of characters correctly predicted. While the game offered entertainment and community solidarity among many Chinese immigrants, it also attracted non-Chinese players who enjoyed the energy and spectacle of the crowded lottery houses where the action took place. The owner of this binder appears to have been one such Seattle resident. His extensive handwritten notes do not reveal any knowledge of Chinese language, and the use of Vedic astrology as a predictive mechanism, while popular in some Anglo circles at the time, would have been unusual for a Chinese player. He may have placed bets for friends or even acted as a runner for others, as a few of the tickets have appended notes citing various English names or initials. We get a glimpse of his personal life from a typed draft of a letter to the Boeing Aircraft Company seeking employment in 1939: "Dear Mr. Weaver; In the course of our short conversation in your office this afternoon, you asked if I could use the typewriter - here's a short note written on my own machine, a Noiseless... Should you be so kind as to give me a trial, I'm certain that my services will be satisfactory and I shall strive to merit a constantly improving position. I feel that a knowledge of things commercial and statistical will be of benefit also, and hope that in the near future to be a regular caller at the little window marked 'payroll checks.'" He offers as a reference Mr. Sedric E. West, District Timekeeper, WPA, at the Robert Fulton School. "He was my superior while I was on the Timekeeping Staff of the WPA and it was only because of a general order from Washington, laying off single men that I lost out on a job which I like very much." On the verso of this draft letter is a handwritten astrological chart predicting winning bets.

        Lettres de deces

Brussels, 1937. Printer's sample book with 43 tipped-in examples of funereal and memorial letters dated between 1898 and 1937. Rare collection of interesting examples of letters of condolence and sympathy to send to the bereaved. When the family of a deceased wanted to step up above placing the same old notice in the obituary pages of the local newspaper, they sent out formal printed letters of their loss. And here we have a slew of samples. Letters are directed to family friends, acquaintances, the nobility and landed gentry, etc., printed by specific name to whom they are sent. The text mentions the deceased (obviously), with the usual added supplements (loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, etc.) After this information is imparted, one can create their unique letter, including, for example, when and where the burial took (or will take) place, additional funeral information, when mass will be celebrated, and related facts that might be important. Of particular interest are the different ways of starting your letter (still is the most difficult part today). As an example, you might wish to start: "We have the honor to inform you of the painful loss of...." or your "It pains us to have to share the cruel loss of...." Many are quite touching. Also included are printed responses to sympathy letters.Van der aa (1899-1949?) was the printer and lithographer to the Court of Brussels. This collection was gathered to be used as examples for customers.

[BDSM, Flogging] Gone with the Whip / Queen of the Furious Lash, The Beastly Cossacks, Whipped By a Tyrant / Rhapsody in Blows / The Lingering Lash, or The Secret Fraternity of Pain and Enslavement

New York: Clacker Press, 1937. Hardcover Hardcover. Near Fine. Four books bound in one volume, without wrappers; each title 48 pages. Illustrated with crude illustrations of men whipping women, women whipping men, and women whipping women, and even an African American woman whipping a white woman. A collection of short stories of private and public flagellation, quite transgressive for its day and even a bit disturbing now (the final story describes a public event in which five women are whipped to unconsciousness). Very scarce. One volume indicates it was one of just 200 copies. Bound in modern green cloth with the title 'Famous Spankings' stamped in gilt on the spine. Original wrappers to the books not retained. Still, a very scarce example of four books documenting sadomasochism at a time when censorship in the United States was quite severe.

        FINGERS OF FEAR

New York: Covici, Friede, Publishes, [1937]. First edition. Some rubbing to cloth at corner tips and spine ends, a very good copy in a very good dust jacket (designed by Hawkins) with rubbing to folds, shelf wear at the corners and spine ends with loss at upper corners and light chipping at head of spine panel. Uncommon in jacket.. Octavo, pp. [1-6] [1-2] 3-309 [310-314: blank] [note: first and last two leaves are blanks], original green cloth, spine panel stamped in black, top edge stained yellow, other edges rough trimmed. A tale of mystery and horror set in New England at the ancestral home of the Ormes family "which, lost in one of the wildest and most isolated reaches of the Berkshires, was the topic of whispered and fearful comment by the natives for miles around." "... an outrageous horror novel done with admirable panache. A brief plot synopsis would be impossible (not to mention improbable), but hauntings, vampirism, incest, lycanthropy, dead babies, and sexual deviance provide only some of the mayhem confronting the cowardly hero at Ormesby. The book can be read straight, or straight up, but it certainly makes a stylish, literate exercise in grand guignol horror." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 300. "Piles horror upon horror until there is not a shiver left in the reader's spine." - New York Times. "Horror laid on thick ... Written forty years too early. Today it would make a fine horror film." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1233. Carter, The Vampire in Literature, p. 84. In 333. Bleiler (1978), p. 148. Reginald 10683. Hubin (1994), p. 602.
