The Works

London: Macmillan and Company, 1937. London: Macmillan and Company,, 1937. [Including Plain Tales from the Hills; The Phantom Rickshaw; The Light That Failed; Gunga Din; The Jungle Book; The Second Jungle Book; Captains Courageous; Kim; Just So Stories.] 35 volumes, large octavo (250 x 167mm). Original full brown niger morocco, titles to spines gilt, raised bands, double line rule to boards gilt, top edges rough gilt, other edges uncut as issued. Internally nice and clean, a modicum of the usual entirely organic variation in colour and slight fading to the spines and some minor wear to a few board edges and spines. An excellent set. The Sussex Edition, the definitive edition of Kipling's works; one of a limited edition of 525 numbered sets signed by the author on the limitation leaf. During the last years of his life, Kipling was engaged in a complete revision of his works, with a view to having them published in Britain (as here) and in America (the Burwash edition). In both cases, he signed sheets for the editions before his death and the editions appeared posthumously. Although 525 sets of sheets for the Sussex edition were prepared, far fewer were bound and many were lost to enemy action as they lay in the publisher's warehouse. This set is in particularly nice condition in the publisher's original binding.

        Espana en el Corazon

Ediciones Ercilla, Santiago de Chile 1937 - A worn, but complete copy of this scarce publication by one of Latin America's most prominent poets. Rare in the original wraps, most first edition copies have been rebound. Posted in Spain as a diplomat during the Spanish Civil War, Neruda became an ardent communist. This collection of left-leaning political poems is his reaction against Franco, exposing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and its fascist regime. THE METAMORPHOSIS

Parton Press , 1937. Parton Press , 1937. First English language edition. Original blue cloth backed black boards with black titles on the spine and blue title label on the upper cover. A fine copy with just a touch of rubbing to the spine ends but a very bright, crisp example. Originally published under the title of Die Verwandlung in Leipzig in 1915, it was translated into English for this edition by A. L. Lloyd. Its perceptions make it one of the most significant works in the development of twentieth century consciousness. Vladimir Nabokov, who ranked The Metamorphosis second only to Ulysses in his critique of twentieth century prose, described Kafka as, "the greatest German writer of our time. Such poets as Rilke or such novelists as Thomas Mann are dwarfs or plaster saints in comparison to him." Born and brought up in Prague at a time when Czechoslovakia was trying to come to terms with the modernism of the surrounding world, Kafka was the son of a loud, robust, bourgeois father. This relationship was an uneasy one for the thin, academic and often awkward Kafka, and paternal themes permeate a lot of Kafka's work particularly this, his most famous work. It tells the tale of Gregor Samsa, a young travelling salesman who lives with his father and sister. He wakes up to find he has changed into a beetle, and cannot move easily or communicate with his family, who consequently turn their backs on him. Partly autobiographical, in an allegorical sense, it expresses Kafka's uneasy relationship with his family and is a reaction to a bourgeois and materialistic society in which the intellectual is regarded as 'vermin' to be restricted and crushed by economic and social demands.

Atlanta, 1937. Atlanta, 1937. unbound. 1 page, 11 x 7.25 inches, Atlanta, June 29, 1937. Rare letter signed "Margaret Mitchell Marsh," declining an invitation to a party because it conflicts with her wedding anniversary, in full: "Dear Miss Hall: Sue Myrick forwarded to me your invitation, and John and I appreciate it so very much. I know the party will be lots of fun and I only wish we could come, but Sunday is our wedding anniversary and we have already made plans to spend it with friends. I admit that the temptation to break this engagement is strong, because I liked Milledgeville so much when I was there at the Press meeting. And also, I would love to attend your party as Prissy. (That is the only role my size would warrant. The costume would be cheap, too --just a croker sack and ten cents' worth of shoe polish. We do appreciate your invitation so much, and I shall look forward to Sue's description of the party." Two horizontal folds and slight foxing; very good condition.

I knew Hitler. The Story of a Nazi who escaped the Blood Purge

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1937. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1937. Octavo. Original brown cloth, title in silver to the spine and upper board, swastika in blind across upper board and spine. With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece and 18 other plates, full-page map to the text. Endpapers browned, text lightly toned, otherwise a very good copy in the fragile and uncommon jacket, sunned at the spine and with chips head and tail, some chips and splits to both panels and the folds, but largely complete, textually and pictorially. First edition. An insider's view of the rise of Hitler. Over the years Ludecke's veracity has been questioned, Orlow advising in his 1969 History of the Rise of the Nazi Party that it should be used only with "extreme caution" (p.323). However, in view of the importance of I knew Hitler as one of the very few examples of Nazi "defector literature", Roland V. Layton carried out a "systematic check of its contents against independent information" ("Kurt Ludecke and I knew Hitler: An Evaluation", in Central European History, XII, 4, pp.372-86), concluding that " … there is much that is true in it. Ludecke clearly moved in the highest circles of Nazidom. He was, the documents show, often where he said he was, doing the things he claims to have been doing in his book. At the same time, it can hardly be denied that much is exaggerated. We may adduce in closing the observations of von Ranke: "Reading is both the easiest and the most difficult thing. To grasp the opinion of the author, where he tells the truth, that is the most demanding skill [our translation]". Ludecke's memoir is important enough, one must say, for us to make the effort".

The image is mounted over a blue background with silver stars and with the character's name in black below the image. The black lettering is a little lost on the dark background but still readable. The colour image is in fine and bright condition, the colours still vibrant. The film was issued in 1937 but not many cells were released for commercial purposes over the following decades. This is one of a number that Disney released for sale during the 1970's. A label from the Disney offices states that this painting on celluloid was actually used in the filming and that only a very limited number have been placed on the market. The image is glazed using 99% UV protection Tru Vue Museum Glass. Fine condition.

THE LATE GEORGE APLEY: A Novel in the Form of a Memoir.

Little, Brown and Co.,, Boston: 1937 - First edition of his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. INSCRIBED, "For Henry T. Brown Jr with kindest regards, John P. Marquand." Also includes two typed letters to Brown signed by Marquand: one saying he can send the books, and one apologizing for getting his name wrong. Brown, a famous book collector, always went by H. Tatnall Brown. The letters are tipped to the endpaper and verso of half-title page (across from title page). First printing, with "Lovely Pearl" on the first line of page 19, as we think it is in all first printings (changed to "Pretty Pearl" in later printings, as outlined in the current edition of our Collected Books). Faint vertical lines on some pages, as usual for this title, otherwise very good to fine in dust jacket with small professional repair at top of spine and to a few tiny chips. A very nice copy of an unaccountably scarce book, and particularly so with what would appear to be an early inscription, as both letters are dated in April 1939. Espana en el Corazon

Santiago de Chile: Ediciones Ercilla, 1937. Santiago de Chile: Ediciones Ercilla, 1937. First edition. Good. A worn, but complete copy of this scarce publication by one of Latin America's most prominent poets. Original self wrappers printed in red, gray and yellow, spine cracked and professionally reattached (lacking a small chip), wrappers soiled, and a dampstain affects the top edge of leaves throughout. Rare in the original wraps, most first edition copies have been rebound. & & Posted in Spain as a diplomat during the Spanish Civil War, Neruda became an ardent communist. This collection of left-leaning political poems is his reaction against Franco, exposing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and its fascist regime. Just two thousand copies of this original edition were produced, each containing 16 black and white photographic reproductions, as here. Good.

        UNCOMMON DANGER

Hodder & Stoughton , 1937. Hodder & Stoughton , 1937. First edition. Original blue cloth with black lettering in pictorial dustwrapper. A fine copy in a fine dustwrapper, which just shows minor wear to the corners at the head of the spine, but is exceptionally bright and crisp. Eric Ambler is widely regarded (with Somerset Maugham and Graham Greene) as a principal pioneer of politically sophisticated thrillers. The five books that Ambler wrote between 1936 and 1940, upon which his reputation rests, are novels of complexity and realism, in which he introduced ordinary protagonists who are thrust into political intrigue they are ill prepared to deal with. In the process he paved the way for such writers as Len Deighton and John Le Carre, who described Ambler's novels as "the well into which everybody had dipped". Uncommon Danger is the author's second book and, in our experience, is his scarcest as a first edition in dustwrapper. No copies have been offered at auction for the last thirty years, and we can recall only one other copy approaching this condition offered for sale.
