        The Red Pony

New York: Covici Friede, 1937. Hardcover. Near Fine/near fine. New York: Covici Friede, 1937. Near Fine/near fine. First Edition, First Printing SIGNED by John Steinbeck. This is the limited edition of 699 copies, this is copy 227. The book was printed by Pynston Printers on handmade La Garde paper. Book is bright and fresh, still in its original glassine, which has some chips as always. The cloth of the book is bright and fresh, tiny bit of darkening to spine -- still bright and clear, all gilt lettering showing with complete clarity. This is a fine copy with just a hint of darkening where the glassine has chipped. Pages are perfect, not a hint of foxing or darkening. The slipcase is VG++ or near fine -- no splits or cracks, numbered on the spine as issued. A beautiful, fresh copy.

D.M.H. [Daisy Monica Hawkins] 41 & 5 more [actually 51] Photostat Reproductions of drawings by EG done at Pigotts, High Wycombe 1937-1939 and at Capel-Y-Ffin, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. With Eric Gill's notes on all the drawings.

High Wycombe, 1937-9. An archive of photostats by Gill of his drawings of his muse Daisy Monica Hawkins who married the artist Edgar Holloway, with manuscript notes. 51 photostats by Eric Gill of his own drawings of Daisy Monica Hawkins, all 35 x 25 cms, one folding. Bound by him in paper wrappers with a brown paper spine. The title is handwritten on the upper wrapper by Gill with manuscript index page by him and three separate pages of notes all in his hand. An extraordinary archive of Eric Gill's own photostat copies of his drawings of Daisy Hawkins, 35 of which were used in his book Drawings from Life where they were reproduced in less than half the size of the originals and hence were pale imitations of them and did not reproduce much of the finer pencil lines and shading which are so clear and beautiful in Gill's photostats. In his handwritten 'Index' Gill notes the exact month and year of each drawing of Daisy and says what some were used for beyond the book - two were used for a statue of the Virgin in St. Cuthbert's in Bradford, 2 for the statue of St. John the Baptist in Guildford Cathedral (Daisy is holding a staff in these pictures), two, of hands (he refers to them as D.M.H. and EG "Flower') are parts of larger drawings - he states that the originals of these are in a Portfolio in the cupboard labelled 'Joanna' - Flower usually means sexual parts in Gill's writing so one can imagine the subject of the complete originals. One of the originals of the drawings was given to Mrs Hawkins. In addition there are three handwritten lists by Gill, two referring to which drawings were sent to Dent for inclusion in the book and which were omitted and the third which lists the drawings "specially characteristic of D.M.H." The drawings are all from the same model, Daisy Monica Hawkins, who lived in Capel-y-Ffin and was Gill's housekeeper's daughter when he lived there in the 1920s. She was later to marry the artist Edgar Holloway. She was the only subject of the drawings reproduced in Gill's book Drawings from Life which appeared in 1940 and a few images of her, some from these drawings, appear in his Twenty-Five Nudes, published in 1938.

        [The complete Hornblower:]

London: Michael Joseph,, 1937?-67. The Happy Return (1937); A Ship of the Line (1938); Flying Colours (1938); The Commodore (1945); Lord Hornblower (1946); Mr Midshipman Hornblower (1950); Lieutenant Hornblower (1952); Hornblower and the Atropos (1953); Hornblower in the West Indies (1958); Hornblower and the Hotspur (1962); Hornblower and The Crisis (1967). 11 works, octavo. Recent dark blue morocco, titles and gilt ship decoration to spines, single gilt rule to boards, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Some occasional light foxing, an excellent set. First editions, first impressions. Forester (real name Cecil Smith) was called to Hollywood to write a pirate film, working under Arthur Hornblower. However, before they had finished the script, another studio released Captain Blood, starring Errol Flynn, and using the same historical incidents that they had counted on. Rather than seeking another position, hounded by the prospect of a paternity suit, Forester jumped aboard a cargo boat bound for home. Another passenger was the photographer Barbara Sutro. In the voyage, he took a one-day cruise around the Gulf of Fonseca in the ship's motor lifeboat, and by the end of the voyage he had a new novel worked out, The Happy Return, with its characters Hornblower, Bush, and Lady Barbara. Hornblower, with all his human indecisiveness and cross-grainedness, was Forester as he wished he had the courage to be, and Forester wrote about Hornblower again and again. This set includes his unfinished novel Hornblower and The Crisis.

        Savage Civilisation.

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1937 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket and Book Society Recommendation wraparound band. An excellent copy in the jacket that is a little dust-soiled and with two tears at head of front panel. Frontispiece and 31 plates, 9 maps and plans, most full-page, numerous line-drawn illustrations in the text. First edition, first impression. The publisher's archive copy with small pencil mark to the jacket front panel. Savage Civilisation was the future founder of Mass-Observation's first best-seller, in which he defended the way of life of the cannibals of the New Hebrides and their rights to their own land. "Harrisson's fourth Oxford expedition (1933–5) was to the New Hebrides. When the rest of the Oxford party left Santo Island for home in 1934, Harrisson got to Malekula, where cannibalism was still widespread. Unarmed, barefoot, with no money, he made friends with the cannibals and took censuses that helped to disprove the then popular thesis that the islanders were dying out from a morbid despair caused by culture shock; he found instead that their numbers were increasing. Harrisson's focus had shifted from birds to people" (ODNB). [Attributes: First Edition]

        Out of Africa.

London: Putnam, 1937. Uncorrected proof of the first British edition. Octavo, original light blue wrappers. In very good condition with wear to the spine edges. Uncommon. From 1914 to 1931, Danish aristocrat Baroness Karen Blixen owned and operated a coffee plantation in Kenya. After the plantation failed, she returned to Europe and began to write under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Out of Africa reads like a collection of stories in which she adheres to no strict chronology, gives no explanation of the facts of her life, and apologizes for nothing. Basis for the film bearing the same name, directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, which went on to win seven Academy Awards.

Führer durch die Entartete Kunst [Guide to Degenerate Art.]

Berlin: für Kultur und Wirtschaftswerbung,, 1937. Octavo. Original pictorial wrappers. Wrappers rubbed and a little abraded and creased, contents tanned. A few pencilled notes and lines in the text. A very good copy. First edition, first impression of the programme accompanying the Nazis' 1937 exhibition mocking "degenerate" avant-garde art. Targeting modern art, music, and literature was an important aspect of the Nazi campaign, and as early as 1930 museums were put under pressure to conform, with certain works taken off show and uncooperative directors removed. By 1933 the first defamatory exhibitions were being staged. "The purpose of this propaganda was the bringing-in-to-line (Gleichschaltung) of the arts within a Nazi state. Art's only task was to illustrate the ideas of National Socialism and the glorification of the State" (MOMA). In 1937, coinciding with widespread confiscation of art across Germany, the Reichskammer für Bildende Künste (Reich Chamber of Visual Art) organised the show Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) in Munich. The exhibition gathered works that were deemed insulting to religion, the state, or the German people; produced by Jews and other minorities; or evidence of foreign and "degenerate" influences such as African culture, homosexuality, and communism. Pieces were crammed chaotically together in the exhibition space alongside derogatory comments and notes about how much the nation had paid for them. Among the 650 items were works by Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, Marc Chagall, George Grosz, Mondrian, Kandisnsky, and Paul Klee. The show was a success, attracting 2 million visitors in just four months and touring Germany and Austria for two years (Adam 1992, p. 124?-25). In 1938 a sister exhibition, Degenerate Music, targeted modern styles such as jazz. Afterward, works from this show and other confiscated pieces were added to party leaders' personal collections or sold internationally, but thousands were publicly destroyed. The artists themselves were prohibited from producing art. Those that could fled, while some continued working in secret and others were interned and died in concentration camps. Following the war some items were found by the Russian Army and made their way to the Hermitage, and in 2010 several bronze sculptures from the exhibition were uncovered during the construction of an underground train line in Berlin. The Entartete Kunst exhibition catalogue is rare on the market; six have appeared at auction in the last decade. An historically significant programme, and a stark reminder of the fate of art and artists under totalitarian regimes.
