Heil Hitler!" - Erste Auflage, EA, Erstausgabe in sehr guter Erhaltung.

Although Kurt Schwitters was one of the most influential artists of international modernism, only select portions of his immensely varied body of pictorial work have been investigated thoroughly. And what a body of work it is, unlike one ever seen before or after, combining bits of found detritus into compositions of tight, unexpected melodies and startling tunes. Schwitters was constantly sighting scraps of handbills, train tickets, newspapers, clothing, and more on the city streets, pocketing them for later use in one of his Merz collages. His intense body of found object constructions stands as one of the premier examples of the ultimtate modern form, assemblage, of which he has been called the "grandfather." After extensive research worldwide and a complete examination of his artistic estate, Schwitters's oeuvre has finally been properly acknowledged, documented, and prepared for public presentation. The comprehensive Kurt Schwitters Catalogue Raisonna, of which the present volume is the third installation, includes more than four thousand works from the period between 1905 and 1948, many of them published for the first time. Lost and destroyed works are documented whenever possible. For ease of reference, the survey is ordered chronologically within each year, works are sub-divided according to genre. In this third volume are presented creations spanning Schwitters's years in exile, 1937 to 1948, when he escaped Nazi Germany to live first in Norway and then in England. Though artworks are primarily reproduced in black-and-white, each volume of the catalogue also presents color reproductions of representative works Zusatzinfo 1312 Abb., davon 119 farbig Sprache englisch deutsch Maße 265 x 308 mm Gewicht 4830 g Einbandart Leinen Kunst Musik Theater Kunstgeschichte Kunststile catalogue raisonne catalogue raisonné classical modern art Dada Sachbücher Kunst Literatur Bildende Kunst Sachbücher Künstler Literatur Bildende Kunst Klassische Moderne Schwitters, Kurt Schwitters, Kurt Werkverzeichnis Werkverzeichnisse ISBN-10 3-7757-0989-4 / 3775709894 ISBN-13 978-3-7757-0989-7 / 9783775709897 Kurt Schwitters Catalogue raisonné Band 3 1937-1948/ Volume 3 1937-1948 (Gebundene Ausgabe) von Karin Orchard (Autor), Isabel Schulz (Autor)

Great Contemporaries, finely bound in full red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe

London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1937. First edition, first printing. Full leather. This is the first edition, first printing, finely bound in full red morocco goatskin by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The elegant binding features a hubbed and gilt ruled spine bearing the title and author. There are gilt rule borders on the covers, gilt rules on the binding edges, gilt page edges, and gilt ruled turn-ins framing striking, marbled endpapers. Even the gold, red, and black head and foot bands are executed with noteworthy skill and aesthetic effect. ?Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London, England? is gilt-stamped on the lower front pastedown. This venerable firm, founded by Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe in 1901, became recognized as one of the leading bookbinders in London. Like Churchill himself, Sangorski & Sutcliffe endured the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and post-war austerity. This truly gorgeous example of the fine binder?s craft is a reminder to collectors that not all fine bindings are created equal. Condition is truly fine. The binding is square, clean, bright, tight, and supple with a few trivial scuffs but no appreciable wear. The contents are well-suited to the binding ? notably crisp, bright, and clean with no previous ownership marks and none of the spotting typical of the edition. Great Contemporaries is Churchill's much-praised collection of insightful essays about 21 leading personalities of the day - including the likes of Lawrence, Shaw, and, most famously, Hitler. The character sketches herein offer remarkable portraits of both their subjects and the author. Churchill's piece about Hitler can be a shock to the modern ear, as it underscores his ability to write a balanced appraisal of his subject while expressing his earnest desire to avoid the war that he would fight with such ferocious resolve only a few years later. There is a reason this book is still in print today. It was written with what has been called "penetrating evaluation, humor, and understanding." Churchill's balanced and nuanced perspectives are a good model for many of today's more polemic writers. And naturally, in the course of sketching the character of his contemporaries Churchill necessarily reveals some of his own character and perspective. Churchill's portrait of T.E. Lawrence, published here just a few years before the Second World War, might well have been written about the author rather than by him: "The impression of the personality of Lawrence remains living and vivid upon the minds of his friends, and the sense of his loss is in no way dimmed among his countrymen. All feel the poorer that he has gone from us. In these days dangers and difficulties gather upon Britain and her Empire, and we are also conscious of a lack of outstanding figures with which to overcome them. Here was a man in whom there existed not only an immense capacity for service, but that touch of genius which everyone recognizes and no one can define." (Great Contemporaries, p.164) While some of the subjects of Churchill's sketches have receded into history, many remain well-known and all remain compellingly drawn. By the April 1935 issue, however, it was designated as the "Official Publication of the Artists' Union." Both Stuart Davis (who was at one point the editor of the magazine) and Harold Rosenberg contributed articles to it. "Art Front" united artists of all political persuasions in an effort to secure federal government support for the arts. Its title alluded not only to the political front - namely, the Popular Front against fascism and war - but also to the frontiers of artistic expression. During its three years of publication, "Art Front" became the single most important forum for radical and nonradical artists to air their views concerning the appropriate social function of art, to review and address new art movements, and to lobby for federal support. Though nonaligned, the magazine, especially during its first year of publication, was sympathetic to the radical heritage of the John Reed Clubs, a mass organization of the Communist Party USA which sought to expand its influence among radical and liberal intellectuals. Its ties to the radical movement were clear in its preference for socially critical art in opposition to artists who favored an American art that depicted indigenous subject matter and used a formal language devoid of foreign influence. During 1936, "Art Front" underwent a transformation that reflected its role as a nonpartisan Popular Front publication. In March 1936, a newly constituted editorial board was announced: Joe Solman, an artist with expressionist tendencies, replaced Davis as editor in chief; new members included Harold Rosenberg, also an expressionist artist, Greene, an abstractionist, and James Yeargans, a black artist; continuing members were Joseph Gower, Murray Hantman, Kainen, and Weinstock. Long-time radicals Gellert, Harold Glintenkamp, and Max Spivak resigned from the board. The pictorial imagery of "Art Front" reflected the two phases of the magazine. Stuart Davis's cover of the May 1935 issue articulated "Art Front"'s initial view of the activist artist: paint tube, palette knife, pencil, saw, hammer, and T-square, symbolic of the traditional artistic media of painting, sculpture, and drawing, are crossed by a banner of artists' demands. Issues of that year included political cartoons by Bard, Dehn, Boris Gorelick, Gropper, and Ben Shahn. A year later the May 1936 cover by Greene (in our collection) showed soldiers rendered as a simplified abstracted form. This shift from propagandist symbols to semi-abstraction indicates very clearly the more traditional artistic perspective of "Art Front" from 1936 on. Other covers included a primitivist woodcut (March 1937), a design of blue horses by Helen West Heller (April 1936), also in this collection; a sculpture entitled Homeless from the Federal Arts Project Exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (September-October 1936), and a still-life object (November 1936). "Art Front" was a forum for discussion of the many aesthetic and ideological positions concerning the relationship between art and society that coexisted in America in the mid-thirties. With its cessation in December 1937, Leftist publications of a more literary focus, principally the "Partisan Review," continued the debate. (Excerpt from Virginia Hagelstein Marquardt, "Art on the Political Front in America: From The Liberator to Art Front," Art Journal (Vol. 52, No. 1, 72-81. Spring, 1993).

INSCRIBED by the author to verso of front free end-paper: 'With every possible good wish, 6.8.39 // To // Michael J. W. Murray F. Sueter, Rear-Admiral / House of Commons.' Slight reading lean; spine lightly sunned, with light shelf-wear. Good overall, with a superb association. Michael Julius Wedgwood Benn (1921-1944) was the eldest son of Air Commodore William Wedgwood Benn, 1st Viscount Stansgate - distinguished flight officer and politician, and father of Labour politician Tony Benn. Having joined the Royal Air Force during the Second World War with his younger brother Tony, Michael was tragically killed when his Mosquito malfunctioned and crashed near Chichester in 1944. The book itself tells the story of the genesis of the tank, constituting the first word on the matter from the man who directed the initial project. Gestating at first as an armoured car for the Royal Naval Air Service, the tank was first referred to as a caterpillar landship.

When Crime Pays Off: A volume written after a continuous lesson learned in that always-existent institution, the School of Experience

[Mobile, AL: Press of Heiter-Starke Printing Co, 1937]. First Edition. Memoirs of a former member of the Pensacola, Florida, police force, and the crimes and criminals he has encountered, generously illustrated with photographs, including mugshots. Herrington joined the police force of the coastal city of Pensacola in 1907, and was shortly thereafter nominated as a mounted man, riding his beloved and trusted horse (and later motorcycle) on his rounds. Over the course of his career, Herrington "arrested hundreds of boys and girls," (p. 17) of whom the vast majority were under the age of 24. The pattern of juvenile delinquincy which the author witnessed during his thirty years as a police officer led to his publishing this collection in the hopes of addressing and educating a more youthful readership--among the anecdotes are "Trio of Young Bandits," "A Youthful Law Breaker," "The Reform School," "Wild Youth," and many others. The book begins with the murder of 19-year-old farmer's daughter, Lola Canady, presumably at the hands of Claude Neal, a black man. Neal was overtaken by a mob before he could be captured by the police, and was mutilated and lynched. Additional anecdotes include that of young men "hoboing" on freight trains with the resultant loss of legs; "A Terrifying Squirrel Hunt"; "Colored Killers"; "Two Death Cars"; and the electrocution of a "Negro Giant." Concludes with biblical advice, a promotion of the Boyscouts, and advice to children and parents on juvenile delinquency. Quite scarce: OCLC locates 2 copies as of April, 2016, none outside Florida. Octavo (23.5cm.); original red card wrappers, photo-illustrated belly-band; 124pp.; photographic illus. throughout. Wrapper extremities a bit rubbed and worn, long closed tear to belly-band touching text and image without loss, rear cover of belly band quite rubbed with loss to text and image with some minor loss of meaning. Still, Very Good overall in a Good or better example of an exceedingly ephemeral band. Perforated subscription card bound in rear.

Besides the two articles by Turing, this issue also contains articles by W. V. Quine ("Logic based on inclusion and abstraction") and B. A. Bernstein ("Remark on Nicud's reduction of 'Principia mathematica'").         Despair. Translated from the Russian by the author.

London, John Long Ltd. 1937. - FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Crown octavo, pp. 287 (+ 24). Elegantly hand-bound in full black oasis morocco leather, spine gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands, gilt title stamped to upper cover, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, publisher's original cloth bound in at rear. Internally clean; a fine copy. Internally clean; a fine copy. Nabokov decided to translate "Otchaianie" ["Despair"] himself. To his chagrin, "Despair" fared no better than "Camera Obscura" had, and Nabokov blamed his English publisher, Hutchinson, for releasing his sophisticated works under its pulp fiction imprint, John Long. He later referred to the novel as "something more than an essay on the psychology of crime" but admitted: "[it] turns out to be a half-baked thriller - even when I translate it myself!" In 1965, he overhauled this version, rewriting much of the original text. This revamped version was serialized in Playboy at the end of that year, and won the magazine's annual Best Fiction award, which included a $1,000 cash prize. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Japanese School Life Through the Camera

[ Tokyo, Japan ]: The Society for International Cultural Relations, 1937. First Edition. Spiral bound. Good. Kimura, Ihei (photographer). Kimura, Ihei (photographer). First Edition. 6 leaves of introductory text (printed on front only) + 50 leaves each with a mounted fine half-tone full page photograph, tipped onto thick paper support with roughly 3/8 inch blank margins, and with printed captions beneath. Spiral bound. The whole contained in a custom cloth clamshell box with leather spine labels. Pageblock is 8 3/4 x 12 3/8 inches. Text is in English, French and German. Ex-library, with front pasteboard cover detached lacking portion that would have engaged the spiral binding, and with significant chipping and loss to front illustration around the edges as well as old penned library markings. Rear pasteboard cover still attached to spiral metal binding, but with significant wear to the edges. Internally, the textblock is lightly foxed for the first few pages, with some library markings. The photographs are generally in fine shape, mounted with a blank "safety margin" which in this case was a wise choice. The foreedge has been impacted in a number of places causing short tears, creasing, and in a few cases very minor chips to the thick paper support. The tipped on images have escaped any significant damage, noting one small edge tear. Overall a poorly designed production prone to damage from the day it was produced. Spiral bound. The fifty photographs by Kimura are quite striking, depicting a wide range of Japanese School Life. The images cover Kindergarden, Primary school, High school (mostly girls) and technical and commercial school (mostly boys and men) Later images are of higher level schooling, including University, and even school for the deaf and dumb. Everything from gymnastics to dance, classroom scenes to young women preparing tea, to odder images like a group of mostly naked young boys standing around a UV lightsource (they are all wearing eye protection). By the nature of the fifty image limit, it is at best a survey of what the Japanese Cultural Relations people wished the world to see of their school system at the time - and for which it is most useful. This copy with a sticker inside the front cover noting "with compliments of Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai (The Society for International Cultural Relations). An interesting external view into pre-WWII Japan. Photographer "Ihei Kimura (12 December 1901 - 31 May 1974) was one of the most celebrated Japanese photographers of the twentieth century, particularly known for his portrayal of Tokyo and Akita Prefecture. Born on 12 December 1901 in Shitaya-ku (now Tait -ku), Tokyo, Kimura started taking photographs when very young but his interest intensified when he was around 20 and living in Tainan, Taiwan, where he was working for a sugar wholesaler. He opened a photographic studio in Nippori, Tokyo in 1924. In 1930, he joined the advertising section of the soap and cosmetics company Ka , concentrating on informal photographs made with his Leica camera. In 1933, he joined Y nosuke Natori and others in forming the group Nippon K b ("Japan workshop"), which emphasized "realism" in photography using 35mm cameras; but this rapidly broke up and Kimura formed an alternative group, Ch K b ("central workshop") with Nobuo Ina and others."         Folklore of Capitalism

1937 - ARNOLD, Thurman. The Folklore of Capitalism. New Haven and London: Yale University Press and Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press, 1937. Octavo, original red cloth gilt, original dust jacket. $1500.Scarce first edition of Arnold's "exciting and stimulating" case for a revitalized American economic and political "creed," the copy of New Deal economist Alan R. Sweezy. In 1930, Arnold joined the legal faculty at Yale, where he "wrote two influential books, The Symbols of Government (1935) and The Folklore of Capitalism (1937), which catapulted him to the forefront of the national intellectual arena. In Symbols, Arnold argued that laws were not collections of immutable truths but rather mental representations of symbolic thinking. Arnold refashioned that argument and carried it a step further in Folklore, wherein he asserted that social progress was possible only through a pragmatic (rather than experimental) approach to government. Reassuring the nervous brokers on Wall Street that his was essentially a conservative diagnosis of America's economic and social ills were Arnold's assurances that there was no reason to root out capitalism; what civilization needed was fresh folklore for the common man and new vitalized myths." Shortly after Folklore's publication Arnold was appointed assistant Attorney General. "Many historians and commentators have referred to Arnold's tenure at Justice as the most effective of antitrust enforcement in U.S. history" (ANB). "Every reader will find it exciting and stimulating". No student of the theory of government can afford to ignore its novel approach to fundamental problems" (LQR 54:603). NYU, 931. Ownership signature of economist Alan R. Sweezy, who in the 1930s helped establish Social Security and later worked at the Federal Reserve Board. [The panoramas] are masterpieces of graphic design unsurpassed to this day." [Attributes: Hard Cover]
