Mary Lavelle - SIGNED by the author

William Heinemann Ltd, London 1936 - 13.2 x 19.5cm tan cloth boards with gilt stamped titles to the front & spine and blind stamped publisher's device to the rear. Beige endpapers, (x), 229 (1blank) pp including black and white frontispiece and 12 illustrations by Mary O'Neill. Signed and inscribed by O'Brien to fellow Heinemann author, Margery Allingham, to the first blank page. Together with original unclipped dust jacket priced at 7s. 6d. The boards have been well protected by the dust jacket are clean and bright with only a little cockling to the front board. Internally, the book is clean with only very light spotting to the prelims. The inscription is dated August 1936 and we believe the recipient was Margery Allingham despite the misspelling of her name, because the book was bought in Colchester (where she died) with a number of volumes from her library containing her name including a signed limited presentation copy of 'Challenge to the Reader' from Ellery Queen to Margery Allingham. The book also has the initials M.Y.C. on the front free endpaper. Allingham's married name was Youngman Carter. We also have her next novel, Farewll Spain, similarly inscribed but with the correct spelling. The dust jacket is in original condition and without tape or other repairs. It is vg- noting the fact that it is in two pieces, split along the lower joint. It is somewhat creased and rubbed and the back panel is darkened with spots and ink marks. There is loss to the fore edge corners, chips of 1-2cm from the head of the spine and less to the foot. There are also a number of closed tears along the top and bottom edges (see images). That said, it presents far better than it sounds in the removable, clear archival jacket that now protects it. Kate O'Brien is increasingly regarded as a significant early 20th Century writer. Many of her books dealt with issues of female agency and sexuality in ways that were new and radical at the time as does this novel that concerns a young woman's experiences in Spain. Indeed this book was considered so radical that it was banned in her native Ireland. She was extremely popular in the 1930s and1940s before falling into obscurity for decades, only to be rediscovered as a key writer in the 1980s. An unusual and very scarce signed volume.         The Southern Gates of Arabia. A Journey in the Hadhramaut.

London: John Murray, 1936 - Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, facsimile of Stark's signature to front board gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Spine gently rolled, scattered pale markings to cloth, contents slightly toned, a few trivial spots to front free endpaper. A very good copy. Title page printed in red and black, 96 plates, 2 folding maps. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author "To Mr. Guest with affectionate and grateful thanks for much help, from Freya May 1936" on the front free endpaper. Arthur Rhuvon Guest (1869–1946) was an accomplished Arabist who helped Stark with her original researches into Hadramawt history and read her book in manuscript: in the acknowledgements Stark thanks Guest "for his invaluable assistance during the writing of my book – an assistance to which such Islamic learning as appears within its pages is chiefly due". After achieving recognition with her first book The Valley of Assassins (1934), which described travels in Iraq and Iran, Stark went to Hadramawt, southern Arabia, in search of ancient trade routes, landing at Mukallah and travelling inland to Tarim via Jol, Wadi Daw'an, Khuraybah, and such ancient cities as Shibam and Sayun. She returned a celebrity, and her book, "often considered a classic of travel writing" (ODNB) was awarded the Mungo Park medal by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.         In Dubious Battle.

New York: Covici-Friede Publishers, 1936. First edition of this "dramatically intense, beautifully written novel" (The New Republic); the first book in Steinbeck's Dustbowl trilogy, which was followed by Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by John Steinbeck on the front free endpaper in a contemporary hand. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing and a few short tears. Trade editions are rare signed. On publication, New York Times reviewer Fred T. March compared it to the "genial gusto" of the "picaresque" Tortilla Flat. He commented that "You would never know that In Dubious Battle was by the same John Steinbeck if the publishers did not tell you so." He called it "courageous and desperately honest," "the best labor and strike novel to come out of our contemporary economic and social unrest," and "such a novel as Sinclair Lewis at his best might have done had he gone on with his projected labor novel." In 1943, with Steinbeck now famous, Carlos Baker "revalued" the novel. He opened by saying "Among Steinbeck's best novels, the least known is probably In Dubious Battle." Steinbeck, he said, "is supremely interested in what happens to men's minds and hearts when they function, not as responsible, self-governing individuals, but as members of a group.... Biologists have a word for this very important problem; they call it bionomics, or ecology." He said that "Steinbeck's bionomic interest is visible in all that he has done, from Tortilla Flat, in the middle Thirties, through his semi-biological Sea of Cortez, to his latest communiques as a war correspondent in England." He characterized In Dubious Battle as "an attempt to study a typical mid-depression strike in bionomic terms." In 1958, critic Alfred Kazin referred to In Dubious Battle and The Grapes of Wrath as "his most powerful books," contrasting them with Cannery Row and The Wayward Bus. President Barack Obama told the New York Times that it was his favorite book by Steinbeck. It is the basis for the 2016 film directed by and produced by James Franco, with a screenplay by Matt Rager. The film features an ensemble cast, consisting of Franco, Nat Wolff, Josh Hutcherson, Selena Gomez, Vincent D'Onofrio, Analeigh Tipton, Zach Braff, Bryan Cranston, Ed Harris, and Robert Duvall.

The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money

London: Macmillan and Co,, 1936. 8vo, 403 pp. Original dark blue publishers cloth with title to backstrip in gilt, in original grey-blue dust jacket. Some minor foxing to fore-edge, boards edges slightly rubbed, dust jacket price clipped and slightly sun toned; otherwise a very good, clean copy. First edition of John Maynard Keynes masterpiece, which solidified his position and fame as the most outstanding economist of his generation. "The world-wide slump after 1929 prompted Keynes to attempt an explanation of, and new methods for controlling, the vagaries of the trade cycle. First in A Treatise on Money, 1930, and later in his General Theory, he subjected the definitions and theories of the classical school of economists to a penetrating scrutiny and found them seriously inadequate and inaccurate...A national budget, over and above its function of providing a national income, should be used as a major instrument in planning the national economy. The regulation of the trade-cycle...must be the responsibility of governments. Lost equilibrium in a national economy could and should be restored by official action and not abandoned by laisser faire. In 1936...The General Theory...threw the economists of the world into two violently opposed camps. Yet eight years later Keynes was to dominate the international conference at Bretton Woods, out of which came the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank..." (Printing and the Mind of Man, 423). An essential and foundational text to any serious collector, student or employer of economics.
