San Francisco City of a Thousand and One Delights.

San Francisco. 1936. - Color lithographic pictographic / pictorial map, 20 1/4 x 45 1/2 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Light wear to edges (minimized by linen backing). Very good condition. Striking stylised panorama of San Francisco by Francis de Foy highlighting the future Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939 with Treasure Island pictured at upper right. Areas of San Francisco illustrated with figures and buildings include the Mission, Golden Gate Park, Chinatown, Nob Hill and Sutro Heights. An unusual and particularly attractive pictorial map with fine lithographic printing. The poster was apparently issued by the City of San Francisco to promote tourism: "Every human sense responds to the cosmopolitan appeals which San Francisco lays at their visitors' feet. The panorama of her hills rising from encircling blue waters, of the two huge bridges spanning the Bay, of the 1939 Exposition taking shape on the man-made island, is your introduction to the delightful things to see and to do that lie within the city itself.San Francisco invites you to share its pleasures and to visit the Golden Gate International Exposition and Pageant of the Pacific in 1939." . .         Saint Joan of Arc.

Cobden-Sanderson, London., 1936. First edition. Octavo. pp xiv, 436. Plates and maps.Laid in are two Typed Letters Signed by V. Sackville-West to a Mrs Jones, dated 7th July 1936 and 7th March 1939 and both on Sissinghurst Castle writing paper. The first letter comprises about fifty words declining Mrs Jones's application for work as a typist; after the typed text Sackville-West adds, in her own hand an in green ink, ''I am not saying this in an emptily polite way, but really will remember & in the meantime will look round for people wanting M.S. typed.'' The other letter comprises about 150 words asking Mrs Jones to type a manuscript ''for my young nephew'' and giving instructions as to format etc. Following the typed text Sackville-West has added in her own hand a few comments of a more revealing nature: ''...My nephew, as you will no doubt observe, is a somewhat immature although an enthusiastic biographer...''. Presumably she means Eddy Sackville-West, although there is no clue as to subject of the biography. His study of Thomas de Quincey had appeared in 1936, but no other full-scale biographies can be attributed to him. Perhaps, as with two of his novels, the book in question was never published. The letters show Vita to have been something of a pillar of dependability both for her family and for her staff.Letters: folds; very good. Book: small patch of fading on spine; very good in good, nicked dustwrapper creased, rubbed and faded at spine with a small hole.

        The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

New York: The Heritage Press, 1936 The sixties Rockwell, though still very much a purveyor of small town Americana, became a somewhat weightier figure, even if he never gained (or sought) acceptance in the art world. But we might think of Rockwell as working on two registers throughout his career--as the PG-rated painter of mischievous, childish niceness, and the earnest commentator on mores and values in adult society. In a way, these two sides of America's most popular illustrator mirror those of the nation's most popular writer, Mark Twain. Though separated by a generation, the two, writes the Mark Twain House & Museum's website, are "twinned in many ways in the public consciousness."I also have the Huckleberry Finn book illustrated by Norman Rockwell also. I will be willing to sell them together at a discount as well as having them listed separately. Both are in impeccable condition, kept in tissue and shams.

Francesco de Capitani Roma.Salotti.Soggiorni.Bauhaus.Architettura Razionale. Bedeutendes Skizzenbuch mit Innen-Design-Entwürfen. Innenarchitektur im Bauhaus-Stil und im Stil der italienischen Architettura Razionale. Important Interior-Design sketchbook in drawings.

Insgesamt gut erhalten. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Turn, Magic Wheel

Constable, London 1936 - First English edition. Boards a bit soiled, else a nice, very good or better copy in poor dustwrapper with large chips missing from the front and back panels. Inscribed by the author: "To Genevieve Norwood with best wishes, Dawn Powell." By consensus the best novel on New York's bohemian life by this satirical, proto-feminist novelist who has only fairly recently been rediscovered. Gore Vidal, whose critical essay helped restore her fame, called her a better satirist than Twain and said she was "our best comic novelist," and Ernest Hemingway once told her she was his "favorite living novelist" -- although she was not averse to poking fun at Hemingway himself, which she did in her novel, The Wicked Pavilion. Novelist Lisa Zeidner, in a review of the biography of Powell by Tim Page in The New York Times Book Review, said that "she is wittier than Dorothy Parker, dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald, is more plaintive than Willa Cather in her evocation of the heartland and has a more supple control of satirical voice than Evelyn Waugh, the writer to whom she's most often compared." Powell was an archetypal free spirit, living much of her life in Greenwich Village, taking -- and flaunting -- lovers frequently (although she was married), and mercilessly skewering the postures and foibles of an array of New York types, from bohemian artists to wealthy tycoons. An exceptionally scarce book, especially signed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

      - Genà ve, Frà dà ric Boissonnas, Imprimerie A. Kundig, 1936. Folio. Uncut in the original printed wrappers; pp. [vi], 139, [3], illustrated with 85 photogravures in the text, 40 tinted photogravure plates with captioned tissue guards and a colour printed map with itinerary; a fine copy. Second edition (first 1910, limited to 230 copies) of this exceptional photo- and travel book of Greece, based on two long and slow journeys through the country and islands in 1903 and 1908. Fred Boissonnas (1858-1946) came from a Swiss dynasty of photographers. As a passionate walker and climber he undertook journeys with his friend Daniel Baud-Bovy, classicist and rector at the Geneva school of Fine Arts. 'From their first journey in 1903 until 1920, carrying a baggage of stereotypes on Greece passed on by travellers of the previous centuries, they toured and took photographs everywhere, from Epirus to the Peloponnese and from Ithaca to Olympus and Mount Athos. Boissonnas and Baud-Bovy together with Greek hunter Christos Caccalos were the first to climb Myticas, the peak of Olympus in August 1913' (Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, online).         The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money.

      - London: Macmillan and Co, 1936. 8vo, 403 pp. Original dark blue publishers cloth with title to backstrip in gilt, in original grey-blue dust jacket. Some minor foxing to fore-edge, boards edges slightly rubbed, dust jacket price clipped and slightly sun toned; otherwise a very good, clean copy. First edition of John Maynard Keynes masterpiece, which solidified his position and fame as the most outstanding economist of his generation. "The world-wide slump after 1929 prompted Keynes to attempt an explanation of, and new methods for controlling, the vagaries of the trade cycle. First in A Treatise on Money, 1930, and later in his General Theory, he subjected the definitions and theories of the classical school of economists to a penetrating scrutiny and found them seriously inadequate and inaccurate.A national budget, over and above its function of providing a national income, should be used as a major instrument in planning the national economy. The regulation of the trade-cycle.must be the responsibility of governments. Lost equilibrium in a national economy could and should be restored by official action and not abandoned by laisser faire. In 1936.The General Theory.threw the economists of the world into two violently opposed camps. Yet eight years later Keynes was to dominate the international conference at Bretton Woods, out of which came the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank." (Printing and the Mind of Man, 423). An essential and foundational text to any serious collector, student or employer of economics. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Seizin Press, Deya, Majorca, and Constable, London., 1936-1937. First editions. Three volumes, plus The World and Ourselves (Chatto & Windus, London, 1938) which was the informal fourth and final volume. Madeleine Vara, Len Lye, John Aldridge, Harry Kemp, Kenneth Allott, Katherine Burdekin, James Reeves, Honor Wyatt, Ward Hutchinson and others also contribute. Essays, fiction, verse, the general ethos of the project being one of collaboration. The design on the front covers is from an engraving by John Aldridge. The World and Ourselves (octavo, pp xii, 529) comprises mainly responses from 65 people prominent in their fields to a letter from Riding concerning the ''world situation''. These include Christina Stead, Naomi Mitchison, Edward Marsh, Lord Gorell, Norman Cameron, as well as almost all those listed above as contributors to Epilogue. On the front free endpaper is the ownership signature of Mary Somerville who after the war became Controller of Talks at the BBC. Some rubbing to covers and bumps to edges of covers. Signs of damp to tail of second volume. The fourth volume is spotted on the edges and endpapers, very good in very good, slightly nicked dustwrapper rubbed at the edges. A very good set. Becoming elusive.

The First of the League Wars.

London: Eyre and Spottiswoode,, 1936. Its Lessons and Omens. Octavo. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spine. With the dust jacket. With 2 laid-in autograph letters signed, both single sheets (177 x 137 mm), respectively blind-stamped "'The Manor', hotel and country club, Duddleswell, Sussex", and "West Poundgate Manor, Crowborough, Sussex". Folding plate containing 2 sketch maps. Crease to spine, tips lightly bumped and rubbed, mild spotting to edges, free endpapers browned. A very good copy in the chipped and torn dust jacket with extensive tape-repair verso. The letters both faintly creased where once folded, and a little dog-eared at corners, a few trivial marks. First edition, first impression of Fuller's important study of the Italo-Abyssinian War. With two autograph letters signed from the author to a Mr Fontaine, apparently an academic or journalist. In the first, dated 8 February 1951, Fuller thanks him for an article he has sent and discusses the balance of power between the trade unions and the British government: "Power is now with the Trade Unions or rather in the hands of those they represent, & responsibility remains with the Government. A government without power leads directly towards dictatorship, power being regained with the pistol". Fuller was probably responding to the Freedom of Association and Right to Organise conventions, which in Britain were ratified in 1949 and 1950 respectively. In the second letter, dated 22 April 1952, Fuller thanks Fontaine for a leaflet and declines an invitation to write a piece on food ("I am not an expert on it, and at the time I have so much on hand that I cannot take on any extra work") The First of The League Wars has been noted for demonstrating "the increasing influence that fascist ideology was exerting over [Fuller] … [It] was the most ideologically committed of all his books, though it did not taint his reputation as a military commentator. Even Swinton [who had doubted Fuller's judgement on occasion] believed it "thought provoking". Douglas Jerrold, later chairman of the publishers Eyre and Spottiswoode, believed it to be "one of the most important books which Fuller has written"(Brian Holden Reid, J. F. C. Fuller: Military Thinker, pp. 187-8).

LA CHENILLE VERTE 'COREE:' THE GREEN CATERPILLAR, 'KOREA.'

      - Japan 1936, Jacoulet. A single deluxe large print, sheet size ca. 35 x 46.5 cm., print size ca.30 x 39 cm., woodblock printed by hand on hand-made paper, carved by Maeda, print- ed by Uchikawa, Fujii & Ogawa. A LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION 350 NUMBERED COPIES, this being #102. There is a note in Miles, see below for the true total printed, which is 150, not the full 'intended' number of 350 copies. . Note the design function of the Korean pottery as a balance to the simplified forms, and the golden mica upper background. It should be noted, that prints with large areas of crushed mica are prone to peeling or chipping. In this case, the mica is very stable and solid. . Chenille Verte, with its heavily impressed gauffrage, uses negative space in a way that influenced some of the Sosaku Hanga in their most abstract studies of the thirties and early forties. . "Sealed with the good luck hammer in cinnabar, just below Jacoulet's pencil signature. The paper has a "PJ" watermark in the lower left corner and was published 24 November, 1936. The print is basically a very nice copy with some marginal toning, and without any other real flaw to mention. Framed and glazed. *** REFERENCES: R. Miles: THE PRINTS OF PAUL JACOULET, illustrated as #40, the descriptive text is on p.97. Per Miles, he states the edition of 150 fully printed, fewer than 75 impressions, the intended edition of 350 but fewer than 275 were actually printed. The model in this print also appears in #119, wearing a horsehair hat and smoking his pipe, one of the archetypes of Jacoulet, who often used the same models dressed in various guises. *** A copy recently sold at auction for $2300. ***

Album of Photographs Chronicling a Comprehensive Voyage Around the World Onboard the SS Arandora Star with Irish Playwright George Bernard Shaw Onboard

World Cruise 1936 - Album of photographs chronicling a comprehensive voyage around the world onboard the SS Arandora Star - the voyage taken by Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, featuring two rare, original photographs of Shaw, and outstanding images of the places visited, taken by a passenger who was quite likely professional photographer. Contains 261 gelatin silver print photographs, the large majority with embedded numbers and manuscript captions, neatly mounted recto and verso onto 68 black cardstock leaves. Large Oblong 8vo. album measuring approximately 44 x 31 x 4 cm, black cloth boards, solid two-post binding with original wood braces. Photographs measure approximately 15,5 x 10,5 cm. Wear and age-toning to boards, otherwise in Very Good Condition. The SS Arandora Star was a luxury cruising vessel at the time, and earlier in the year had been refitted to accommodate 354 first class passengers (two hundred more in first class than previous). One of the elite passengers on this voyage was the influential, candid, witty, and highly respected Irish playwright Bernard Shaw who is seen in two (2) photographs being interviewed by Miami journalists, and one (1) photograph on the approach to Hawaii where he lunched with Charlie Chaplin. [The British Pathé, formerly Pathé News, holds an original film clip of the interview seen in these photographs.] These two exceedingly scarce photographs (above) show George Bernard Shaw being interviewed by American press agents onboard the British cruise ship SS Arandora Star while in port at Miami, Florida, on 5 February 1936. He was on his second world voyage together with his wife. Shaw is also seen on deck with a group of passengers preparing for disembarkment in Honolulu, where he would meet with Charlie Chaplin for lunch in Waikiki on the 26th of February. The album is neatly composed and offers superior photographic views from a multitude of nationalities around the world. With his keen eye for capturing the essence of indigenous life in island nations and underdeveloped communities, the photographer presents striking scenes of the daily customs which distinguish the poor and rich, visiting places tranquil and lively, ancient and modern. The high quality images throughout the album, each numbered, and all embedded captions being in the same hand, suggest that this album is the work of a professional photographer, perhaps hired by the Blue Line. Surely this voyage provided much for Shaw to ponder and write about, and perhaps aspects of it would be found in his prolific writings. He and his fellow passengers arrived in Spain at the dawn of the Spanish Revolution. Their visit to Jaffa came only a few months after "The Bloody Day in Jaffa," a riot that began on 19 April 1936, and being a violent attack by Arabs directed at the Jews, to rebel against British colonialism and the increase in Jewish immigration. [The event is often described as the catalyst to the 1936-39 Arab revolt in Palestine.] Highlights in the Americas include views Manzanillo and Mazatlan in Mexico, principle cities in California, and Honolulu, where Bernard Shaw had lunch with Charlie Chaplin. Several photographs capture the tour of Honolulu, though none of the private lunch between Shaw and Chaplin on 26 February. The Mediterranean portion of the voyage yields many indelible views from North Africa, showing the people and customs of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, coastal Libya and the Middle East. Nostalgic views show Tripoli in Libya 75 years prior to the revolutionary civil war, although at the time under Italian rule. The passengers were at Freetown in Sierra Leone on Armistice Day, November 11th, attending a memorial service illustrated with six photographs. Several photographs were taken there before crossing the Atlantic to tour Colombia and cross the Panama Canal. The following are some iconic customs illustrate in skilled snapshots: the Sultan of Morocco's cavalry guards surrounding his palace at Rabat; a Hawaiian boy pounding t

Two Photograph Album of a Voyage to South Pacific Islands, Hawaii, Fiji and New Zealand, as Well as a Railway Tour Across North America

Fiji, Hawaii, New Zealand, Canada, USA, 1936. Two albums of photograph taken and compiled by an English couple's adventure, first making a voyage to exotic South Pacific Islands, then crossing North America by rail from the west coast to the eastern seaboard as far as New York City and Quebec. Together containing 274 gelatin silver print photographs, both snapshot images and professional works, mounted onto cardstock leaves, most with either manuscript captions or embedded typescript captions. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 8 x 6 cm, and the largest 11 x 6,5 cm. Two oblong 8vo. string-tied brown paper board albums measuring approximately 29 x 21 cm, containing 203 photographs, and 71 photographs, respectively. Some creasing to boards, mild fading to a scant few images, otherwise in Very Good Condition, a fascinating reminiscence of bygone days. This two-part journey, which was designed for the travellers to witness primitive tropical island life and also to traverse and explore a mountainous continent, provides us today with the real sense of how very much has changed in 80 years, for tribal communities and urban centers alike. Lovely photographs are taken on a Pacific Islands voyage, with uncommon views from the especially historic Fijian town of Levuka and the capital city Suva, including photographs of the indigenous people. One of these is purported to be of a group of cannibals. A traditional Fijian dwelling called 'bure' is shown, made of thatched wood and straw. Iconic views in and around Honolulu in Hawaii include the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head, Pali Pass, and a pineapple grove. Pacific Islands scenes continue with quite a contrast in theme, as a visual tour of Auckland in New Zealand illustrates the rapid expansion which developed in the first three decades of the 20th century. Subsequently cruising along the Pacific Northwest Coast of America, ports of call included San Diego Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and finally Vancouver. Charming old-time views, some of which were professionally produced, some of which were captured by the travellers, show historic streets, parks, and favourite destinations still today. From the West Coast, a CP Rail journey across the Rocky Mountains lends itself to superb images of Johnson's Canyon, Banff and Lake Louise. Crossing the continent by train also provided a stay in Winnipeg, and eventually Niagara Falls. Quite a few snapshot photographs were taken in Vancouver, mainly in Stanley Park. Three photographs reveal that a tour was made to Chicago and New York City before returning to Quebec City. A caption reads, "Leaving Quebec June 11th 1936 for Southampton" and thus concludes the noteworthy tour abroad.. Photo.
