        Cup of Gold

NY, Covici Friede, 1936, first edition thus, dust jacket. Hardcover. This is commonly refered to as the first edition, second issue, with a new preface by Lewis Gannett and with a different title page, binding, and dust jacket design, with the misspelling (Covici Freide) blacked out on the jacket spine with the proper spelling (Covici Friede) printed above and with no mention of Steinbeck as the author of Of Mice and Men on the front jacket panel, the Goldstone & Payne bibliography of Steinbeck errs in its suggestion that this book came from unbound sheets of the first edition by McBride in 1929, recent scholarship by Phil Ralls in his Steinbeck Firsts shows that this is an entirely new printing, making it truly the second edition, Covici had promised Steinbeck that he would keep his earlier books in print, he used photo-offset plates made from the McBride first edition to make his own printing which makes this book the true second edition and not the first edition, second issue, Ralls shows that Lawrence Clark Powell actually makes this point in the April 17, 1937 issue of "Publisher's Weekly," a physical examination of the McBride first edition and this book shows, for example, that there are different widths of the text blocks, the McBride being 28 mm wide while this true second edition measures 33 mm, see Goldstone & Payne A1b, Morrow 2, this specific copy is a Family Copy that belonged to his sister, Elizabeth Ainsworth with her bookplate to the front free endpaper, it was part of the family collection that was auctioned a few years ago, laid in loosely is a manuscript note (probably in his sister's hand) stating "First novel/written when John/was just past 20/years old,". Very good.

The Flavor of Texas, Inscribed to Frank C. Lockwood)

Dallas, TX: Dealey and Lowe, 1936. First issue binding, First Issue Dust Jacket with tape repair on back. McVickers A5. Bound in printed cloth, original patterned and cream cloth, salmon on tan, with spine reading GTT at foot. Top of restored dust jacket has about 1" chip showing all but first three letters FLA in Flavor of Texas". a very nice long inscription: "To Frank C. Lockwood, delightful expresser of the flavor of Arizona, as a recuerdo of our first meeting, though we had known and liked each other for years. My friend, I salute you and your work. You have pioneered with the charm and perspective of art." Sincerely, Frank Dobie, Tucson, Arizona, August 2, 1938. As a bookseller I have handled dozens of nice Dobie inscriptions to his friends--this is among the nicest. Lockwood, of course, was the author of many of the finest Arizona pioneer histories. Of course, the book is eminently collectible but to read Dobie as pure pleasure as is this work from the surely apocryphal folklore regarding Sam Houston to the unique language of the working cowboy. Like most Dobie, his writing breathes with reality although when he put his mind to it, he could write academic work though such productions brought him little pleasure. It was authentic flavor Dobie wanted and this and all his works have accomplished to the delight of readers whether they be in Texas or Cambridge where he taught [fighting to keep the proper English students from stealing his Stetsons). Dykes, My Dobie Collection, p. 8 "hard to find and expensive" #11 on his rarities list. 6-Guns #602; Herd #691, One Hundred Head Cut Out of the Jeff Dykes Herd, 8. Sloan writes in her Ranching Catalogue Part 2 "References to cowboys and ranching are found throughout, and two chapters are specifically devoted to ranching history...One of Alexander Hogue's striking black-and-white illustrations shows a cowboy drinking water from a cow track, with Abe Blocker's famous quote about how he had 'drunk more water out of cow tracks than any trail driver left alive'..Dobie includes a first-rate chapter on "How Texas was Hell on Women.". First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. Illus. by Alexander Hogue. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

The Grasses of Great Britain [ unique original collection of specimens]

Salisbury [UK], 1936. Unique. Contemp. three quarter three quarter morocco. A fine copy. folio. There are 205 full page mounted specimens and mounted photographs etc.. A massive folio volume of mounted specimens of British grasses representing a life-time of work. The botanist/collector was H Goddard who was a well known authority on British flora in general and grasses in particular. He was the staff botanist for the firm of Dunns Farm Seeds in Salisbury. In 1936, after 50+ years of collecting he presented the collection to the firm. They had it bound with introductory letter press. This is the folio volume being offered here. The preliminaries of the volume contain photos and mounted press clippings from which is derived the following: ' A collection of British grasses, believed to be without equal .... It took most of his life to get it together, and two years ago it was put into a bound volume ... and presented to the firm. A foreward to it was written by Prof. R G Stapleton, director of the Welsh plant breeding station, and one of the world's authorities on grasses, who pays it and the author a high tribute. ... He says, ` in Mr. Goddard's collection they have a valubale possession which will stand for all time ... the specimens are beautifully set -up, correctly named and well arranged. Indeed it is such that could have only been brought together by a botanist of long experience, and by one with infinite patience and with a deep feeling for the beauties of nature` ' .Apart from some minor scuffing the volume is in fine condition with impeccably preserved specimens in tact. A superb and fascinating monument to scholarship, science, and natural beauty.
