        They Found Atlantis

Hutchinson, London 1936 - The book is signed, dedicated with 'Good wishes for Christmas and the New Year' and dated Jan 2nd 35 by Dennis Wheatley. There is no publication date in the book and the date he has put on it is odd as the book was first published in 1936 - it would appear he has made the mistake that many people do in the early part of the year and written the previous year's date. I have presumed that the date and price of 7/6 shown on spine.shows it is a first edition but am not sure of this. The edges of the boards are a little darkened and there is a bit of spine lean but the hinges are tight. Rubbing and slight fraying to the top right hand corner of the front panel. The page edges are browned with a little spotting. The jacket has a detached front flap and heavy chipping and loss along the top edge. Extensive taping to the reverse has just about held most of it togehter but it is a very ragged specimen. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Songs For The Philologists

London: Privately Printed in the Department of English At University College. Very Good. 1936. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Laid paper, stapled through the fold, bound in grey-blue wrappers, detached from rusting staples as to be expected. Most collectible condition without internal inscriptions, marks or faults. Bottom edge trimmed, top and for-edges untrimmed. Housed in a matching clam-shell case. Conforming with Hammond and Anderson, B15. A vital, landmark element of Tolkien literature. Rare. This particular copy has been shown in exhibitions at the Tolkien Society; The Songs For The Philologists began as duplicated typescripts by E. V. Gordon for the English Department students at Leeds University. Gordon included verses by himself, J. R. R. Tolkien, as well as modern and traditional songs, chiefly in Old and Modern English, Gothic, Icelandic, and Latin. This booklet was printed on the College's private press as an exercise by Dr. A. H. Smith (formerly a student at Leeds) to a group of his students. Smith had not asked permission of Tolkien or Gordon so the books were not distributed but stored at the press in Gower Street. Most of the copies were destroyed in a fire that destroyed part of the building in which the press was housed. Only 14 copies are said to have survived. The total number of copies printed is unknown, but undoubtedly was very small .

A superior copy of this book with. distinguished provenance. (#114482). First edition. A highly important presentation copy with a signed inscription by Lovecraft to August Derleth on the front free endpaper: "To Auguste- Guillaume, Comte d'Erlette, / whose encouraging opinion of this / tale is responsible for its present / appearance in (mis) print. / A reasonably corrected copy, with / the grateful compliments of the / perpetrator -- / H. P. Lovecraft / Christmas, MDCCCCXXXVI." Lovecraft's first published book, preceded by THE SHUNNED HOUSE (1928) that was printed, but not circulated beyond a tiny circle of Lovecraft's friends. Publisher William H. Crawford has stated that approximately 400 copies were printed, of which about 200 were bound, the remainder destroyed at a later date. Binding and typography were dreadful and a handful of the earliest copies had corrections in Lovecraft's hand. This copy has a dozen or so corrections by Lovecraft, including a line of missing text handwritten on page 72. In addition, there is an eight-line manuscript errata slip written in Lovecraft's hand which provides "additional errata discovered by Corwin Stickney..." tipped in on the second blank. According to Crawford, an errata leaf and a dust jacket were printed after publication and distribution of early copies. The jacket is present, but not the errata slip. Of two known bindings, this copy has title on front panel stamped in upper and lower case letters. The dust jacket is Currey's variant 2 (no priority established) with lettering in silver and yellow- green illustration. "A fine story of supernatural adventure and discovery, despite the unfortunate surprise ending which does much to spoil what went on before." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1039.         The Mint. A Day-book of the R.A.F. Depot between August and December 1922, and at Cadet College in 1925 by 35207 A/c Ross.

Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1936 - Quarto. Original Japon spine and tips on blue paper boards, black morocco label to the spine, top edge gilt, the others uncut, heavy mid-blue endpapers, matching the paper on the boards. Very slightly rubbed on the spine, but overall an excellent copy. Title page in black and red. True first edition, one of an edition of just 50 copies published to establish copyright, only 10 of which were for sale, priced at $500,000 this numbered 10 (U.K.) "One of Lawrence's avowed purposes in joining the RAF was to write of the ranks from the inside. He began immediately making notes when he enlisted in 1922. With his dismissal in January 1923, because of unfavourable publicity, the project was set aside, not to be taken up again until he was posted to India in 1927 In March 1928 he sent a clean copy of the revised text to Edward Garnett [who] had copies typed which were circulated to a small circle, among them Air Marshal Trenchard Trenchard's concerned response led Lawrence to guarantee that it would not be published at least until 1950" (O'Brien). In 1936 the manuscript found its way to America and "in order to control publication, it was found necessary to have a copyright edition published". This copy one of those retained by Lawrence's brother A.W., his inscription "The property of A.W. Lawrence" inked to the verso of the front pastedown. Subsequent pencilled inscriptions show that this copy was presented by A.W. to Edward Eliot "on permanent loan", and, on his death in 1950, retained by his son Peter, who notes that, "A.W. Lawrence told Peter Eliot in July 1950 that he might keep this Book". The Hon. Edward Eliot was Lawrence's trusted legal adviser - in a letter to Liddell Hart in 1934 Lawrence described him as "a very balanced solicitor" (The Letters p802) - one of three trustees for the funds raised by the publication of The Revolt in the Desert, but "the only Trustee really", Hogarth and Buxton being added in case Lawrence should ever need to "carry a point against him if I wished it deeply" (letter to Charlotter Shaw in 1927, Wilson 791). The prohibitive price placed on this edition by Lawrence is equivalent - at a conservative estimate - to around $8m in current purchasing power. One of the great Lawrence rarities.         The Shadow Over Innsmouth

Everett, Pennsylvania: Visionary Publishing Co.. 1936. First. First edition. Illustrated by Frank A. Utpatel. Currey's Binding B (no priority established): black cloth stamped in silver on the front panel in both upper and lower case letters. Fine in fine dustwrapper (Currey's Dust Jacket 3 (no priority established) printed in silver on white paper, no illustration). Original oversized errata slip is present and unfolded (rarely found, and in the cases where it is present, invariably it has been folded). Both the book and errata slip are housed in a cloth chemise and full morocco slipcase decorated with gold and silver decorations. Both the errata slip and the dustwrapper were printed after the fact and mailed to those who had purchased the book. A magnificent copy of Lovecraft's first published book (a prior work was printed in 1928 but not published, and was circulated only among a few of Lovecraft's friends). Additionally, this title is the only book by Lovecraft published during his lifetime -- he died the following year, and the voluminous Lovecraft volumes now in print were all published in posthumous collections. Approximately 400 copies of this title were printed, of which only about 200 were bound. From the collection of John K. Martin, with his simple, tiny book label on the rear pastedown. John K. Martin founded the Black Sparrow Press and is perhaps best known for providing Charles Bukowski a guaranteed stipend that allowed Bukowski to leave his post office job in order to write. Martin's private collections are renowned for the superior condition of their material. A stunning copy of this highspot of horror literature. .

        Red Hot and Blue

New York: Random House. 1936. First. First edition. A bit of foxing to the boards, and a touch of rubbing, all considered a very good or better copy of a book which, because of the fragile silk-over-boards binding, is generally found in poor condition. Issued without dustwrapper. Copy number 84 of 300 copies Signed by the author/composer (of which 250 were for sale). On the front pastedown is the small bookplate of the composer's wife, Linda Porter. The Porters were married from 1919 to her death in 1954, and Linda has been portrayed in film biographies of Cole Porter by Alexis Smith (1946's Night and Day) and Ashley Judd (2004's De-Lovely). Despite Cole Porter's well-documented homosexuality and the common assumption that their marriage was merely one of convenience, they appeared to be a genuinely compatible couple. .

THE GENERAL THEORY OF EMPLOYMENT, INTEREST AND MONEY.

Hogarth Press, London 1936 - Keynes, John Maynard. THE GENERAL THEORY OF EMPLOYMENT, INTEREST AND MONEY. Signed. London: Macmillan and Co., 1936. First Edition. 8vo. 403 pp. Gilt-stamped dark blue green cloth, gilt titles and rules to the spine. A near fine copy in a very good grey printed dustwrapper with 5/- Net to the front flap. Signature of E. B. Hodgson on ffe. with remnants of old tape marks where a neat cut Keynes signature was held in place & is now tipped there. Printing And The Mind Of Man 423. "Critical reaction to his great book was inconclusive. To young economists it was a 'Manifesto of Reason and Cheerfulness'. To most of their elders it was little more than an inflationist tract, 'the dying voice of the bourgeois crying in the wilderness for the profits it dare not fight for', as Joseph Schumpeter put it. Most of Keynes's Cambridge colleagues sat on the fence, shaken but sceptical". Skidelsky, Robert. John Maynard Keynes. Fighting For Britain. 1937-1946. Keynes's masterwork, written in the aftermath of the great depression of 1929 is generally considered the most influential global social science treatise of the century. The General Theory quickly & permanently changed the way the world looked at the economy & the role of government in society. A very nice copy. Tucked into the back is a copy of the June-July ECONOMIC NEWS, Vol 20 Nos. 6 and 7. featuring John Maynard Keynes. 10 printed pages on stapled cream stock, folded at the middle.       Macmillan and co. Limited. London. 1936. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (8.7 x 5.6 inches).         The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money.

London, Macmillan, 1936. - XII, 403 S., goldgeprägter O.-Leinwand-Band (Einband minimal berieben). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
