John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1936 - 1936 Wisden Original Hardback

1936. Hi, This lot is a 1936 Original Hardback Wisden in Very Good Condition, excellent for the year. It also had the added bonus of being a presentation copy, signed by WH Brookes (Editor) to future editor Norman Preston which makes the book very unique. Wisden chaaged materials in 1933 and the quality of the books suffered as a result, hence why 1933-1936 seem a lot more faded than the early 1920s Hardbacks. The gilt to the front and spine is ever so slightly fading as per the year and the boards are dulled, this book however is a lot better than an average 1936. Odd mark to the boards. Internally it is a nice and bright book, very yellow pastedowns and titlepage and clean inside. The hinges are strong. Old address sticker to the first page and removable post-it-note stating the endorsement. The previous owner had a bat bookmark inserted loosly froma paperback. Internally very good without restoration with an excellent photoplate.

        SUISSE EN IMAGES LUMINEUSES

1936. WOLFF, KATE. PERE CASTOR. SUISSE EN IMAGES LUMINIEUSES designed by Lalouve. Paris: Flammarion (1936). Square 4to (8 1/2"), flexible pictorial card coverss, Fine and unused. 1st edition. There are 12 lovely full page silhouette illustrations. Each illustration represents a different historical figure or event in Swiss history including William Tell, Nicolas de Flue, Major Davel and more. The child is to cut out the marked sections of the illustration. Then by cutting out pieces of various colored papers provided in the book, and pasting them into open sections of the full page illustration, the child can make their own illuminated pictures. The effect is most effective when held to the light. Designed by LALOUVE whose real name was Kate Wolff. Wolff was a Jewish artist forced to leave Germany in 1933. She came to Paris and began to work for Pere Castor, hiding her Jewish origins and changing her name to Lalouve, This is one of the more unusual and rare Pere Castor titles.

Memoirs of the Hawaiin Revolution (3 Volume Set in Original slipcase)

Honolulu: Advertiser Publishing Co., Ltd, 1936. Limited Edition. Octavo. Limited to 600 sets published for subscribers. A set of the memoirs of Sanford B. Dole and Lorrin A. Thurston published by the Advertising Publishing Company. This set is numbered 187 with the limitation slip mounted on the lining papers of each volume. Originally written for joint serial publication with Lorrin A. Thurston's memoirs in the Honolulu Advertiser. Thurston's chapter begins with Jack London's arrival on his yacht Snark in 1907. Thurston provides interesting details about London's fixed writing routine, his despising of what today would be called "political correctness" on the racial issues inherent in Hawaii, followed by Thurston's defense. The set is comprised of: Vol. I, Writings of Lorrin A. Thurston, 166p. index; Vol. II. Lorrina A. Thurston, Memoirs of the Hawaiian Revolution, 664p.; Vol. III Sanford Dole, Memoirs of the Hawaiian Revolution, 188p. index. From the controversy of Queen Lili'uokalani's authorship of Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen to the issue on the annexation of Hawaii (and even statehood [as Mahan advocated as an early proponent of geopolitical issues], this is an essential set for understanding the History of Hawaii from President Harrison to the period just before the Second World War. Although the three volumes has nearly 1,000 pages of text, the margins are wide and the print is large so that it is eminently readable. Bound in red patterned cloth letrtered in gilt, within blind stamped frame. A very good set with rubbing to joints and gilt fading. Housed in original three decker slipcase.

HUMAN RIGHTS. OUR OBJECT IS LIBERTY FOR ALL; GAINED BY MORAL POWER, AND REGULATED BY IMPARTIAL LAWS. VOL. II, NO. 3.

New York: , September, 1836, 1936. New York, September, 1836. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Folio. [4] pp, printed in four columns per page. Tears around edges, creased and with significant toning to the upper front half and extensive foxing throughout. This rare monthly, an organ of the American Anti-Slavery Society, began in July 1835 and ended with the February 1839 issue. Among other interesting features, the present issue prints a "Form of a Petition for the Abolition of Slavery in the District of Columbia. To The Congress of the United States." Not in Lomazow, Mott, Sabin. OCLC records copies from all the other years, but no copies of this issue. While there was opposition to slavery in the nation's capital, the greater forces against slavery came from the outside, through newspapers and petitions. Many petitioned Congress to end slavery in the nation's capital and the organizing efforts in the District included the Washington Abolition Society which was organized in 1827. But the opposition to ending slavery and the slave trade in the District was such a contested issue that a gag rule instituted in 1836 prohibited a discussion of slavery on the floor of Congress. Though Abolitionists including John Quincy Adams vehemently opposed the gag rule, standard-bearers of slavery in the District fought tirelessly for it. Eventually, in 1848, the House of Representative passed a resolution to prohibit the slave trade in the District of Columbia. Although the resolution did not gain enough traction to end the slave trade in the District, it played an influential role in the congressional debates over slavery and the slave trade. The Compromise of 1850 admitted California in the Union as a free state; the former Mexican territories were admitted as part slaveholding states and part free soilers states; and the slave trade in the District of Columbia was abolished. The 1850 Compromise provided the necessary momentum for the enactment of the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act of April 16, 1862 that abolished slavery in the Nation's Capital.

        The Hound of Death.

London: for The Crime Club by Collins,, 1936. And Other Stories. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine and front cover orange. With the dust jacket. A fine copy in the exceptional dust jacket with some nicks and creases to spine ends and some short closed tears to rear panel. First Crime Club edition, first impression, with the cancel title page. This book was first published by Odhams as part of a promotion in association with the periodical "The Passing Show", after the Crime Club declined to do so. However, Collins later took over a small number of sheets and issued the book under The Crime Club imprint, with a slightly altered dust jacket design: it retained the same front panel design as issued by Odhams, but the spine panel was changed to white printed in black, and bore a price of 3/6 (the first edition had a pictorial spine panel and was unpriced). Extremely scarce in the jacket, and especially so in such nice condition.

Il va sans dire.' ['Il va de soi.'] [Working manuscript on the Spanish Civil War.]

circa 1936 - written in black ink on blue paper with many corrections and insertions in the same, the smaller leaf providing a passage marked for insertion ('v. feuillet') between the second and third paragraphs of p. 2, pp. [5, rectos only], various sizes and formats, very good condition. Gide's article, published as 'Il va de soi.' (the crossed-through title on the final sheet) in 'Vendredi', the organ of the Front populaire on 22nd January 1937, praises the Marxist volunteers going to fight in Spain and offers a damning assessment of Franco. Though, broadly speaking, the author's allegiances are clear, the subtext of the piece is Gide's 'Retour de l' U.R.S.S.' from 1936, which had offered a critical account of communism and a repudiation of his previous sympathies. His compromise here takes the form of a positive assessment of the isolated effects of communism without endorsing or referring to its general programme. The present manuscript copy comprises the full article, with additional material within the deleted passages - it demonstrates the fluency and directness of Gide's thought, even whilst balancing his convictions with editorial demands.

The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money

London: Macmillan and Co. Limited,, 1936. Octavo. Original dark green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, spine ruled in gilt, boards in blind. Ownership inscription of the economist J. B. Condliffe to front free endpaper, with his occasional ink side-ruling and pencil marginalia, and with 35 pages (c. 180 × 140 mm) of handwritten reading notes and a printed review of the work by H.D. Henderson extracted from The Spectator of February 14, 1936, loosely inserted. Spine lightly rubbed, faded at head, short snag to cloth of front hinge, sewing a little strained, blank corner of first index leaf torn away; withal a very good copy. First edition, first impression of this key work. Written in the aftermath of the great depression, Keynes' masterpiece is generally regarded as one of the most influential social science treatise of the century. It "subjected the definitions and theories of the classical school of economists to a penetrating scrutiny and found them seriously inadequate and inaccurate" (PMM), quickly and permanently changing the way the world looked at the economy and the role of government in society. From the library of the Australian born economist John Bell Condliffe (1891-1981), who attended Keynes's seminars at Cambridge following undergraduate studies in New Zealand and action in the First World War. Invited in 1931 to join the economic secretariat of the League of Nations, where he wrote its first World Economic Survey, Conliffe went on to become part of an eminent group of economists who collectively shaped international discussion on trade, monetary order and economic policy in the three decades after 1935. He lectured at the London School of Economics from 1937-1939, before relocating to Berkeley in 1940 where he served as professor until 1958.
