        The Agamemnon of Aeschylus

Faber & Faber 1936 - First impression. An acclaimed verse translation employing a contemporary idiom and intended primarily for the stage; MacNeice's Agamemnon was first performed by the Group Theatre in 1936 with music by Benjamin Britten. Doone's production received rather mixed reviews, not entirely unanticipated in some quarters: Auden had prepared the programme which included a note entitled: "Are You Dissatisfied With This Performance?" This copy signed by MacNeice and very scarce thus, this being only the second example we have encountered in two decades. Purple cloth over boards in dust wrapper, the latter edge-worn with numerous small chips and darkened at the spine. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Gone with the Wind (Will H Hays personal copy)

New York: Macmillan, 1936. From the estate of Will H. Hays, with his name stamped bottom edge front endpage. (I have a number of signed and inscribed copies from the Hays estate available). Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position, he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire, inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts, and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. When the Catholic Church formed its Legion of Decency and threatened nationwide boycotts of movies, Hays installed a more formal production code, called the Hays Code( later simply "The Code"), which became the virtual law of Hollywood until the 1960s. Under it, all portrayals of nudity and overtly sexual behavior were banned (even between consenting adults). Even the aftermath of sexual activity, pregnancy and the resulting childbirth, wasn't allowed. It was the reason why, in "Gone with the Wind ", when Melanie Hamilton Wilkes was giving birth, she and Scarlett and Prissy were literally shown only as shadows on a wall. A fascinating and UNIQUE piece of Hollywood history ! Very Good, Hays has glued front and rear panels of dustjacket to front pastedown and front endpage. Cloth is rubbed, lightly soiled, and red discoloration bottom edge rear panel, still, a Very Good copy.. 8th Printing. Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket.

The Allegory of Love. A Study in Medieval Tradition.

Oxford: Clarendon Press 1936 - 1st edition. Pp.x/378, small bookseller's label (B.H.Blackwell Ltd, Oxford) to inside front board, top edge of pages a little dusty, cracking to inner rear hinge at final page but holding. Dark blue cloth, gilt title to spine, slight edge wear mainly to top and tail of spine. A good clean copy of a scarce first edition. VG.** "C. S. Lewis’s first important professional work was his 1936 book, The Allegory of Love. Published by Oxford University Press, it secured Lewis’s standing in his profession and soon became enormously influential in setting the terms of subsequent scholarly discussion about the nature of Courtly Love and the role allegory played in its codification and depiction. In it Lewis sketches a literary history about how developing attitudes about gender relations intersected with an indirect mode of expression in which—as all definitions of allegory suggest—one thing is made to stand for another."         Scattering of Protons by Protons" (Tuve, pp. 806-825) WITH "Theory of Scattering of Protons by Protons" (Breit, (pp. 825-846) WITH "On Nuclear Forces" (Cassen, (pp. 846-850); "Possibility of the Same Form of Specific Interaction for All Nuclear Particles" (Breit, pp. 850-857) in The Physical Review 50, 9, November 1, 1936

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF FOUR CRITICAL PAPERS USING AUTOMATED PARTICLE DETECTION TO GREATLY REFINE PROTON-PROTON SCATTERING. (Watson, The Quantum Quark, 415). ALL IN ONE ISSUE. In the spring of 1936, the Physical Review received four papers, each playing a role in mapping out the properties of the nuclear system, specifically, charge symmetry - and each of significant import. One was experimental, by Tuve, Heydenburg and Hafstad (pp. 806-825), and three theoretical ones by Breit, Condon and Present (pp. 825-846), Bernard Cassen and Condon (pp. 846-850), and one by Breit and Feenberg (pp. 850-857). The work of Tuve and these other physicists "greatly refine[d] proton-proton scattering using automated particle detection" (Watson, The Quantum Quark, 415). TUVE PAPER: Working at Washington's Carnegie Institution on proton-proton scattering experiments performed with the Van de Graaf accelerator… [Tuve et al.) "analyzed the scattered protons with the help of slit systems in an ionization chamber" (Mehra, The Conceptual Completion, 968). Their work experimentally demonstrated the existence of a short-range nuclear force. The team concluded: "The magnitude of interactions thus determined by the scattering experiments is in very satisfactory agreement with that used successfully for calculations of mass defects of light intimate knowledge of forces which bind the 'primary particles' into heavier nuclei so important in the structure and energetics of the material universe," (Tuve et al., 1936, pp. 824-825). BREIT & CONDON PAPER: This paper presented an analysis of the experimental proton-proton and proton-neutron forces, "the latter two derived the consequences for the theory of nuclear forces" (Mehra, 968). Their analysis proved that "the charge independence of nuclear forces was established as a crucial element of nuclear theory after the mid-1930s" (Mehra, 970). CASSEN & CONDON PAPER: This paper is the "first introduction of an internal symmetry into physics" (Stroke, The First Hundred Years, 242). Their work described the "deuteron states [or] the capture of neutrons by protons and the proton-proton scattering by their formalism" (ibid). The paper formalized the results of Breit, Condon, and Present "using isospin, an internal symmetry that considered the neutron and proton as different states of the nucleon" (ibid). BREIT & FEENBERG PAPER: This work provided the extension to charge independence, obtaining "a universal form of interaction for all nuclear particles" (ibid). CONDITION & DETAILS: New York: American Physical Society. Original paper wraps. Complete. 4to (10.5 x 8 inches; 263 x 200mm). Slight wear at the edges of the wraps and head of the spine. Bright and clean throughout. Very good condition.

Moscow: State Publishing House of Graphic Arts, 1936. First Edition. Well-preserved issue of this landmark Soviet art magazine, issued from 1930 to 1941 to celebrate the achievements of the first two Five Year Plans and (through various foreign-language editions) to propagandize the stark contrast between the vibrant Soviet economy during this period and the stagnation of Western economies under capitalism. "All the visual strategies of the propaganda photobooks, designed by Lissitsky, Rodchenko and others...were developed in USSR in Construction, one of the most beautifully produced magazines of the twentieth century" (Parr-Badger, The Photobook, I:148). The present issue is devoted to the people of the Kabardino-Balkarian Autonomous Region (two small nations inhabiting the part of the Caucasus dominated by Mt. Elbrus), their history, traditions, accomplishments, and contributions to the common work of Soviet construction. Design and layout by Es and El Lissitzky. Folio (41.5cm); illustrated card wrappers, stapled; [42]pp; illus; text is in English. TUVE PAPER: Working at Washington's Carnegie Institution on proton-proton scattering experiments performed with the Van de Graaf accelerator? [Tuve et al.) "analyzed the scattered protons with the help of slit systems in an ionization chamber" (Mehra, The Conceptual Completion, 968). [Attributes: First Edition]
