        Ulysses

Random House, New York 1934 - 20.7 x 14 cm. xviii, 774 pp. Cream colored cloth in a cream colored dust-jacket printed in red and black. The jacket has had nearly invisible expert repair to some tiny tears at the extremities, but is an otherwise fine copy. Housed in a custom made box. First issue with the designer's name Reichl on the bottom corner of the front panel of the dustjacket. One of the great ironies attached to the first authorized American edition is that the copy text used to set the type was in fact the Roth pirate edition of 1929 (Slocum & Cahoon A19), a corrupted version of the Shakespeare and Co. 1927 edition. Random House publisher Bennett Cerf initiated a judicial challenge to Ulysses' standing as a banned book, which was over turned by Judge John M. Woolsey in the famous trial of 1933, leading to unfettered dissemination of the book (Woolsey's important decision makes up part of the preliminaries in this edition).         Murder on the Orient Express.

London: The Crime Club, W. Collins Sons and Co., 1934.. First edition. Octavo, pp.254; [2], advertisements. Elegantly bound in recent deep red oasis morocco with raised bands and gilt titles and extra gilt to spine, gilt border to boards Some spotting and thumbing within, some leaves folded at corners, externally fine. A presentable and inexpensive copy of this legendary crime novel. One of the greatest locked-room mysteries, with one of the most original solutions. A crowning point in Christie's career, and probably her most high profile title, helped to that prominence by the success of the 1974 film of the same name, featuring among its cast stage and screen luminaries such as Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Sean Connery, Anthony Perkins, John Gielgud, and Ingrid Bergman, the last of whom won an Oscar for her performance in the film.

        I Was a Pagan

Hodder & Stoughton, England 1934 - I Was A Pagan, by V.C. Kitchen, Hodder And Stoughton, London, MCMXXXIV (Jan, 1934). Dedication page; 'To The Oxford Group, That disciplined army of Life Changers who gave new meaning to my life and new direction to its purpose". The highly anticipated 1st printing release of 20,000 copies of this title in Jan., 1934, was sold out in 1 day, and a second printing was immediately ordered. (Feburary, 1934) Later in March, the American Edition would supply the bookstores published by Harper & Brothers. This true first printing is inscribed and signed on the FFEP, "To Jim Moore, from one "revolutionary" to another, Victor Kitchen, May 17, 1934. "In 1934, Victor Constant Kitchen published a book called "I Was A Pagan", describing his discovery of the Oxford Group and the way it had changed his life. This little volume is one of the most useful of the works which were written during that period, for those who wish to obtain detailed knowledge about the group's central beliefs and practices, including such things as house parties, confession, moral inventory, quiet time, and guidance. There are also excellent descriptions of some of the spiritual experiences which the group's members had but is equally important in terms of understanding the early Alcoholics Anonymous movement, and what the A.A. people learned from the Oxford Group."         Black Woman Carrying Laundry

New York 1934 - Woodcut on thin stock hand-made paper by the artist. Signed in pencil. Image measures 7 1/2 x 5". Sheet measures 10 1/2 x 8 1/2". Matted with archival corners. This beautiful, rare woodcut by Rockwell Kent depicts an African-American woman carrying a basket of laundry. It has been professionally matted with archival corners. Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) was an American realist painter from Tarrytown, New York. Kent spent his life in a variety of places, including Maine, Newfoundland, Alaska, Greenland, and South America. His paintings, lithographs, and woodcuts often portray aspects of a life lived in nature and are collected today by major museums throughout the country. Kent was also a prolific writer and illustrator who produced several books. This print is a lovely example of his work.

        Meine Erfahrungen mit der Leica

His first published book in which he showed the greatness of the 35mm Leica camera capabilities, tall 4to, VG/VG as chip to top edge of dj else excellent condition, very rare to find in 1st edn, yellow covers, over190 classic b/w photos here demonstrating his extraordinary artistic skill and talent as a photographer. In his book "My Life with The Leica" Walther Benser recalls the period where he would assist Dr. Paul Wolff. Benser was a Leica employee who had gone through the full technical training in Wetzlar and later spent many years traveling with the Leica Slide Show. He recalls: "Dr. Paul Wolff had skills which I found myself envying. Without any optical aid from the Leica viewfinder in the new (Telyt) reflex housing, he could dissect the surroundings with his naked eye in the search for a suitable subject and position. He invariably picked out the perfect spot for taking the picture with the focal length he had already selected". 63pps text in German, spotting to next two, followed by those glorious prints. .

The Story of a Country Boy

Farrar & Rinehart, New York 1934 - First edition. Orange cloth gilt. Boards a trifle soiled, near fine without dustwrapper. A novel about the evolution of a "self-made man" from a humble country bumpkin to a pretentious captain of industry, by this satirical, proto-feminist novelist who has recently been rediscovered. Basis for the 1935 film *Man of Iron* directed by William C. McGann, and featuring Barton MacLane and Mary Astor. Gore Vidal, whose critical essay helped restore her fame, called her a better satirist than Twain and said she was "our best comic novelist," and Ernest Hemingway once told her she was his "favorite living novelist" -- although she was not averse to poking fun at Hemingway himself, which she did in her novel, *The Wicked Pavilion*. Novelist Lisa Zeidner, in a review of a fairly recent biography of Powell in *The New York Times Book Review*, said that "she is wittier than Dorothy Parker, dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald, is more plaintive than Willa Cather in her evocation of the heartland and has a more supple control of satirical voice than Evelyn Waugh, the writer to whom she's most often compared." Powell was an archetypal free spirit, living much of her life in Greenwich Village, taking -- and flaunting -- lovers frequently although she was married, and mercilessly skewering the postures and foibles of an array of New York types, from bohemian artists to wealthy tycoons. Marks to rear board are more heavy. Internally the hinges are strong but some webbing can be seen to the front hinge, it is a bit wonky. Nice photoplate. Contains the bodyline controversy.

Negro anthology.- First edition, signed by Nancy Cunard, dedicated to the Cuban poet and communist activist Nicolas Guillen.

Londres, Nancy Cunard at Wishart & co, 15 février 1934 - 31,5 x 25,5 cm, 855 p., 385 ill. Original binding, publisher's black cloth, typographic title and Black Belt map printed in red. First edition, limited to 1,000 copies (a significant number of which were destroyed during the London Blitz. Autograph dedication signed by Nancy Cunard (1902- 1989). A poet, editor, activist, journalist, anti-conformist, Nancy Cunard (1896-1965) is closely linked to the 20th century avant-guarde movements, notably the Surrealists. In 1928,in the wake of her relationship with Aragon, Nancy Cunard shares her life with the African American pianist Henry Crowder, who raises her awareness to the black cause. The trauma of her mother, Lady Cunard's insulting racism is certainly a catalyst in Nancy's antiracist and anticolonialist commitments. From 1931 to 1934, through her writings, her contacts, her travels, she gathers the materials and drafts her manifesto project. The 155 contributors to the Negro Anthology (250 articles) are activists, journalists, artists, academics, African Americans, West Indians, Latin Americans, Americans, Europeans, among which Alain Locke, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Th. Dreiser, Louis Armstrong, Ezra Pound, William Carlos William, G. Antheil, J. Banting, K. Macpherson N. Guillen, J. Roumain, Samuel Beckett (translator of the French Surrealists' contributions), R. Crevel, B. Péret, G. Sadoul, L.P. Quint, G. Michelet, G. Padmore, etc. An encyclopaedic literary, artistic and musical anthology as well as a wide documentary survey, Negro is the first overview which mixes popular culture, sociology, politics, history, art history, and includes articles, archives, press excerpts, music scores, testimonies. In a very modern editorial choice, which superimposes unpublished texts, compilations, raw documents and a very rich and extensive commented photographic iconography, the book is divided into seven geographic and thematic sections: America, Negro stars, Music (America, creole, West Indies, Africa), Poetry (by Negro poets, West Indian poetry, Poetry by white poets on negro themes), West Indies and South America (Jamaica, Haïti, Cuba, Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada, Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, British Guiana, Brazil Uruguay), Europe, Africa. The work pertains to the aesthetics of African cultures with an important chapter "Negro sculpture and Ethnology" (90 photographs,12 plates: great museums and private collections (P.Guillaume, F.Fénéon, Ch. Ratton, Moffat) but its main motive lies on the denunciation of the hypocrisy and racist violence of Western and colonial societies. The origin of our copy is highly symbolic. The dedicacee,Cuban poet and communist activist Nicolas Guillen (1902-1989) unveiled the African heart of Havana to Nancy Cunard in July 1932 during her exploratory mission. Her poems, translated in English by Langston Hughes are part of Negro. But Guillen also shares with Nancy Cunard his commitment with the Spanish Republicans. She publishes her poems in "The poets of the world defend the Spanish people" (n°6, 1938). The date of the dedicace (August 1937) coincides with the arrival of Guillen in Paris in order to participate in the second International Congress of writers for the defence of culture. Attesting to the transnational and manifold antiracist and anticolonialist fights of the thirties, does not reduce Negro Anthology to a mere outdated atlas of negro suffering or to an archeology of negritude. The abolition of racial prejudice is still a current issue. The lesson in tolerance, the scope of Nancy Cunard's manifesto are intact, and so is its urgency. A pioneer in its committed conception, the originality and scope of the collected contributions, and in its great formal modernity, Negro Anthology is one of the exceptional and emblematic books of the 20th century and its cultural revolutions. Here, the recognition and importance of African culture appear for the first time in all their aspects. Beautiful copy, with an established origin, whose rarity and q [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Charles Keene. The Artists' Artist

London: Published by P. & D. Colnaghi, for the Author. 1934. Day, London, [1596]. Fifth edition. STC 11226. *The first edition of this famous book printed after the death of the author. Originally published in latin in 1559, the \i Book of Martyrs was an immediate best seller, and its influence was profound. In 1571 Convocation decreed that copies were to be placed in all cathedral churches and that the houses of archbishops, bishops, archdeacons and canons should all have copies. 'The lively style of the book, not to mention the gruesome illustrations, which first appeared in the English edition of 1563, was thus given an opportunity to influence - and prejudice -the minds of people of all classes of society, including those who could not otherwise have afforded it.' [\i Printing and the Mind of Man , 86]. This copy lacks all the preliminary leaves (the main title page, dedicatory epistles, etc.), the last few pages of text (1935-1949), the index, and two of the three woodcut inserts. Complete copies of early editions are rare, and even with the defects described above, this is a relatively complete and generally clean copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Kamerny teatr i ego khudozhniki, 1914-1934 [The Kamerny Theatre and Its Artists, 1914-1934]

Izd. Vseros. teatral nogo obshchestva, Moscow 1934 - A celebration of Alexander Tairov's pathbreaking Kamerny Theatre in Moscow, featuring set and costume designs as well as scenes from the theatre's first 20 years. Profusely illustrated in both color and black and white, the book showcases each production of the Kamerny, founded by Alexander Tairov (1885-1950 ) and his wife, the actress Alisa Koonen (1889-1974).Tairov brought many non-Russian productions to the Kamerny, including works by Shakespeare, Bertolt Brecht, Eugene O'Neill, George Bernard Shaw, and Oscar Wilde. Tairov's productions were known for their magnificent set and costume designs, and he collaborated with some of the most acclaimed avant-garde artists of the day, including Alexandra Exter and Natalia Goncharova. Indeed, it's possible to see the evolution of 20th-century Russian art through the set and costume designs, which reflected Cubist, Constructivist, Rayonist, and even Art Deco influences. It was an exciting time in Soviet theatre; this era featured some of the greatest directors of the 20th century, such as Stanislavsky, Meyerhold, and Vakhtangov. The Kamerny was the scene of one of the most significant plays of the Soviet theatre, according to Nick Worrall in his authoritative study, "Modernism to Realism on the Soviet Stage" (Cambridge University Press, 1989). Vsevolod Vishnevsky's Russian civil-war play, Optimistic Tragedy, opened at the Kamerny on December 18, 1933. "It concerns particular historical events associated with the civil war in the Soviet Union but, more generally, it is an article of faith -- in the triumph of Life over Death, of the Collective over the Individual, of faith in the necessary tragedy of revolution, of the necessary destruction of those who oppose revolution, of hostility to the spirit of anarchism, and faith in the leadership of the party." Indeed, the play, which is featured in this book, marked an important milestone in the development of "socialist realism."The Soviet government closed the Kamerny Theatre in 1949, and Tairov died a year later. The Kamerny's home at 23 Tverskoy Boulevard is now occupied by the Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre.4to (12 1/8 x 8 7/8 inches / 307 x 220 mm), xlvii [1],1-195 (plates), [3], 199-211 (appendix), [1] pages, in publisher's original brown cloth, lacking the rare dust jacket. In Russian. Blindstamp to front board, both boards rubbed, small scrape to rear paste down. Tissue guards separating each play, plate 36 unpublished, according to list of illustrations in the appendix, plate 41 loose, some small closed tears in a few pages, plate 175 improperly trimmed, not affecting the illustration. Overall, Very Good or better. A stunning look at the first 20 years of the Kamerny Theatre, one of the most innovative theatres at an important moment in Soviet theatre history. SCARCE.
