        [Manuscript]: American Family

[No place: no publisher. 1934]. Typed manuscript. Bradbound mimeographed sheets. 554pp. Stiff textured wrappers with title label and a sticker for the Rialto Service Bureau which performed the typing and mimeographing. The front wrap is detached, the rear wrap has a moderate crease with a tear while the pages are dampstained at the extremities and four pages are scraped at the end of the manuscript affecting a few words, very good. The novel concerns Tobias Condit who takes his family to China to do missionary work, their son's education back in America, and his return to China as a doctor. The story was one of Baldwin's most personal novels, which she based on her grandfather's diaries, as well as her most popular book up until that point, spawning a sequel the following year, The Puritan Strain, that centered on the family's daughter. .

Invitation to Life (Scarce First Novel & Mystery).

Greenberg, New York 1934 - Bound in finely woven blue cloth and stamped brightly in white ink on the spine, the edges of the front and rear boards have some slight mottling and sunning. The binding is lightly shaken and pages 158 and 159 have some light fingerprint marks in the margins, not affecting the text. The top corner of the front endpaper is lightly wrinkled and there is the number "84184 M" written in ink with the matching number and code written along the edge of the top of the inside front flap of the dustjacket. The very scarce pictorial dust jacket has its original price of $2.00 at the top of the inside front flap and depicts a couple on the deck of a ship gazing out to sea on a moonlit night. There are small pieces missing from the top of the spine which affects some of the tops of the white lettering of "Invitation." There is a little chiping and wear to the bottom of the spine just below "Greenberg", not affecting the lettering. Wear and chipping to the corners, and there is a 4" separation along the bottom of the front fold. Very scarce in dust jacket. "His first novel "Invitation to Life" is a murder mystery and a romance. It is the story of Tregan, a sensitive man, who is unprepared by heredity or early environment for the complications of life. Essentially simple in his desires, he flounders around trying to adjust himself to the dramatic events which force themselves upon him. "Happy for a time in a war marriage, the sudden death of his wife while he is in France destroys his last tie to a world of order and discipline. In a mental daze, he drifts into several unsatisfying affairs with women who mean little to him.And then he meets Alice Johns, a young woman of wealth and sophistication. The murder of a woman in Tregan’s home puts him in a serious plight."(Inside front dustjacket flap.) "Eric Knight, author of the beloved children’s classic "Lassie Come-Home" was born April 10, 1897 in Yorkshire, England. This lush countryside was the setting he chose for Lassie's adventures.Knight grew up in the mill towns where stories of "come-home" dogs were common. He was raised by an aunt and uncle and worked and went to school as a youngster part time. Immigrating to the US in 1912, he settled in Philadelphia. He studied music and art and attended the Cambridge Latin School in Massachusettes. Always a patriot, he joined the Princess Pat Regiment in Toronto, Canada to fight forhisbelovedYorkshire in1917. His only two brothers enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard. They were killed on the same day in 1919. Eric Knight was killed Jan. 15, 1943 in a tragic plane crash on his way to North Africa."       New York, december 10, 1934. (KAUFMAN, BEATRICE) Approximately 13-1/2 x 11 inches. . Fine, with Van Vechten's stamp on rear, docketed with number, and dated in ink . Beatrice Kaufman (1895-1945) was the wife of wife George S. Kaufman, a playwright in her own right, and the East Coast representative of Samuel Goldwyn Pictures. It was Beatrice who, upon reading the galleys of Steinbeck's OF MICE AND MEN sent to her by Steinbeck's agent Annie Laurie Williams, immediately recognized the dramatic possibilities of the novel and rushed the galleys to her husband. And it was Kaufmann who then acquired the dramatic rights and eventually produced the successful 1937 stage version which ran for 207 performances and became the basis for two subsequent film versions

        But Not the End

Little, Brown, Boston 1934 - First edition. A little foxing to the page edges, else fine in near fine dustwrapper with a small chip on the rear panel, and a little soiling. The author's uncommon second novel, about a busted stockbroker, his lovely but neglected wife, a prize-fighter and what they get up to. Better-known for his mysteries, this novel seems to shade more towards romance. A very nice copy. See this book in 3D on our site. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1934 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT INSTRUCTION MANUAL IN THE ART OF FENCING USING THE FOIL, SABRE AND EPEE

Borden, Hants, Hampshire, England 1934 - On offer is a handwritten notebook-style instruction manual, as titled on the cover "Fencing Lessons Foil - Sabre - Epee". The inside front cover has a pastedown fully identifying the writer: "Serjeant T. Wells of the 1st BATTALION OXFORDSHIRE & BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. 19th Sept. to 13th Dec. 1934. Instructors Gartzen and Harkinson". An Index of the 67 page book shows that besides the lessons in the three sword types there are chapters on the Army Fencing Union, Pitches and Arenas and Bayonet Team Competitions. We are led to believe that this book is also a manual for the Instructor trainee as most pages have three columns headed: Pupil, Master, Remarks. The remarks appear to be helpful hints for the Instructor in dealing with the pupil. There are a number of hand drawn illustrations, including charts, tables, graphs and such plus there are quite a few little. 1.5" x 1", photographs which were cut from elsewhere and glued in as part of the lesson. In addition to the identification on the cover and inside front cover the back cover has Sjt. Wells handwritten address being we believe, Bordon, Hants [Hampshire]. Boards are cracked in the hinges and the netting shows but otherwise in very good shape. Provenance: From the library of a famed Hungarian fencing master, instructor, Olympian and coach. Superb fencing collectible. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall [Attributes: Soft Cover]

"Cocos Island Sailfish Club", a finely executed decorative map, commemorating FDR and the Presidential staff's catch of sailfish on board the U. S.S. Houston, during one of the early Presidential cruises in the Pacific Ocean

N.p. [U.S.S. Houston?], n.d. [ca. 1934-5]. (ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D) 15-1/2 x 21 inches. Pencil on paper, showing a map of Cocos Island, identifying landmarks, with a list of the Members of the "Club" ("Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ross T. McIntyre, Edwin M. Watson, Daniel J. Callaghan, Gus Gennerich, Frederick B. Adams, Basil O'Connor"), two large leaping sailfish enclosing the caption, all surrounded by a decorative border of small tropical fish. Artist unknown; docketed in pencil on verso "H.D. Alexandra, Navy Recruiting Bureau, New York City". A few small pinholes, some edgewear and marginal abrasions, one marginal tear mended on verso, very good condition overall . A remarkably fine memento of one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's first visits to the Cocos Islands in the summer of 1934 or the autumn of 1935. In July 1934, Roosevelt sailed aboard the Houston through the Panama Canal (11 July), the first President to do so, and stopped at Cocos Island on his way to Hawaii and Portland, Oregon. In October 1935, President Roosevelt embarked on the Houston in Seattle and sailed to the Cerros Islands, Magdalena Bay, Cocos Islands, and Charleston, S.C. Roosevelt would make four more trips to the Cocos Islands, again on the U.S.S. Houston in August 1938 (see pp. 16-18 of the printed Log of the Cruise, which gives an account of fishing for sailfish), and twice in 1940 aboard the U.S.S. Tuscaloosa. The names of the club members include Roosevelt's bodyguard, Gus Gennerich, and his secretary Franklin B. Adams, as well as "Pa" Watson (one of the chroniclers of the 1938 trip), and naval aides Callaghan and McIntyre
