I, Claudius; from the autobiography of Tiberius Claudius, born B.C. 10, murdered and deified A.D. 54

New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas. Very Good- in Very Good dj. 1934. 2nd printing. Hardcover. NOISBN . [light wear to book at extremities, binding just starting to crack between first and section signatures (with slight misalignment of first and second signatures visible at fore-edge), slight indentation and dampstain at top edge of rear cover, light foxing to top edge and fore-edge; jacket shows some wear along top and bottom edges, slight fading at spine, light soiling to rear panel]. (B&W photographs) Biographical/historical fiction at its very finest, not only a compelling read itself but also the basis for one of the most highly-regarded television adaptations of all time, the 1976 BBC production starring Derek Jacobi in the title role. The rather droll jacket blurb catches the spirit of the goings-on wonderfully: "The action is alternately strange, tragic and ludicrous, for Rome knows herself under a long-standing curse ... and has lost all moral self-control. Poison, blasphemy, treachery, incest, black magic, unnatural vice flourish. Insane cruelties are committed. Nobody seems to care." Very uncommon in the original dust jacket, by an uncredited artist who makes old Claudius look like a fairly benign guy. .

London: Random House, 1934. First American edition. Octavo, original white cloth. Fine in a fine first state dust jacket with two closed tears to the back panel. A superior example of this dust jacket which is prone to tanning. In a review in The Dial, T.S. Eliot said of Ulysses: "I hold this book to be the most important expression which the present age has found; it is a book to which we are all indebted, and from which none of us can escape." He went on to asserted that Joyce was not at fault if people after him did not understand it: "The next generation is responsible for its own soul; a man of genius is responsible to his peers, not to a studio full of uneducated and undisciplined coxcombs." Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest novels of the 20th century.

Their Excellencies Sir George & Lady Beatrix Stanley's Visit to Parlakimedi Jan,1934. A Photograph Album By G K Vale & Co of Bangalore & Madras

G K Vale & Co, Bangalore Madras 1934 - A lanscape format album containing 47 images [each approximately 8x6ins and variously landscape and portrait in presentation] each pasted to a the facing page only and mainly retaining tissue guards. Origtinal black cloth covered boards with the title and photographer's credit gilt blocked to the upper board, the black paper pages held by cords, wear at the extremities of the binding but the contents clean with only very minor damage ot one or two images. The visiting card of RAJAH OF PARLAKIMEDI with supersciption in ink "with my best compliemts " loosely inserted. The photographs show : general and detail views of the Palace , the Rajah waiting for and then greeting Sir George (as Governor of Madras), views of the town 'en fete', visits by Lady Stanley, a river trip hunting wildfowl with a grand shooting luncheon (20), the Governor's motor car, etc. Parlakimedi was a small state in the Ganjam district of Madras. At this time the Hon Sir George Stanley was Governor of Madras but a few months later he was acting Governor General of India (May-November 1934) while Lord Willingdon was on leave, after which he was made GCSI. He was a son of the 16th Earl of Derby and had been a regular soldier (RHA) and MP and minister before assuming his governorship of Madras; his wife, Lady Beatrix was daughter of the 3rd Marquess of Headfort. The images of the hunting party are attractive and include several ladies taking an active part. Although the Rajah would have been greatly honoured by this visit it is unlikely that very many copies of this album were made and that far fewer survive. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Movie Humor - August, 1934 Issue. George Quintana Cover art, "Meet the Toy Friend!"

Mt. Morris, IL: Norwood Publishing Co., 1934 Mt. Morris, IL: Norwood Publishing Co., 1934. August, 1934 Issue, Volume 1, No. 4. "Good Girl" pin-up cover art by George Quintana, "Meet the Toy Friend!". Contents are illustrated from photographs. Pictorial wrappers, 66 pp. 11 3/8" x 8 3/8". Some rubbing, a few small chips, spine is mostly complete. Quite bright, a solid VG, maybe a bit better. A scarce and iconic issue from the pin-up pulp world of the 1930's, the covers of which, when executed by the likes of George Quintana, Enoch Bolles and Earle Bergey, would currently be dubbed "Good Girl" art. And, that they are. While Bolles covers are scarce enough, Quintana, about which very little else is known but that he painted such covers as these (see scan) is a harder find. Contents are mostly Hollywood studio-produced photos of stars, with plenty of rumor-mill type text as well. The humor derives from the quippy editor-inserted captions next to the photos, mostly cinematic stills. A genre classic for both cover and content. LG-1

Living My Life [One-Volume Edition] - Inscribed

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1934. First Edition Thus. First one-volume edition of Goldman's monumental autobiography, an undisputed high-spot of women's writing and one of a few truly important 20th-century radical memoirs. Goldman was furious with Knopf for issuing the book in two volumes at the height of an economic depression, and considered the publication price of $7.50 to be exhorbitant. The book indeed sold poorly, despite strong reviews, and it has never been common. Knopf issued the one-volume edition in 1934. On February 1 the same year, after 15 years in exile, Goldman was re-admitted to the United States for a brief 90 day period, during which she lectured extensively. The present copy was signed for Sabina Cohen of Rochester, NY, who attended a city club lecture with her husband Hyman in February, 1934. A scarce title in dustjacket. Octavo (23cm); black cloth, with titles stamped in red on spine and front panel; red topstain; dustjacket; Cloth boards; 653pp, xvi, followed by 8 leaves of half-tone plates. With presentation inscription from Goldman on the front endpaper: "Mrs. Sabina Cohen / Emma Goldman." Hint of a forward lean, with light wear to board edges; Very Good+. Dustjacket is spine-sunned, lightly edgeworn, with a few tiny losses at spine ends and corners, and a few tears mended on verso; Very Good+.

The Postman Always Rings Twice (First Edition)

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1934 - First Edition. The author's seminal first novel, a cornerstone of hard-boiled fiction that was filmed twice: first in 1946 with John Garfield and Lana Turner, and more nihilistically with a David Mamet screenplay in 1981 with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange.Cain's initial title for the book was Bar-B-Que, thankfully altered as a result of a conversation Cain had, oddly enough, with screenwriter Vincent Lawrence. Lawrence told Cain that he was always anxious about the mail arriving because it often contained rejections for scripts he had submitted. Lawrence pointed out that he dreaded the second ring, because that practice in those days was relegated exclusively to the postman that goes back to the Victorian era in England. Cain decided it was an appropriate metaphor for the fate of the book's protagonist.Very Good in a Very Good plus dust jacket. Scattered foxing to the page edges, soiling and staining to the rear board, some of the usual toning to the backstrip. Jacket is bright, with light toning to the spine, a small bruise at the center of same, and just a bit of rubbing at the corners. In a custom quarter leather clamshell box with a rounded spine, raised bands, and an interior matching folding cloth covered chemise. A novel about the evolution of a "self-made man" from a humble country bumpkin to a pretentious captain of industry, by this satirical, proto-feminist novelist who has recently been rediscovered. Basis for the 1935 film Man of Iron directed by William C. McGann, and featuring Barton MacLane and Mary Astor. Gore Vidal, whose critical essay helped restore her fame, called her a better satirist than Twain and said she was "our best comic novelist," and Ernest Hemingway once told her she was his "favorite living novelist" -- although she was not averse to poking fun at Hemingway himself, which she did in her novel, The Wicked Pavilion. Novelist Lisa Zeidner, in a review of a fairly recent biography of Powell in The New York Times Book Review, said that "she is wittier than Dorothy Parker, dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald, is more plaintive than Willa Cather in her evocation of the heartland and has a more supple control of satirical voice than Evelyn Waugh, the writer to whom she's most often compared." Powell was an archetypal free spirit, living much of her life in Greenwich Village, taking -- and flaunting -- lovers frequently although she was married, and mercilessly skewering the postures and foibles of an array of New York types, from bohemian artists to wealthy tycoons. .
