        18 Poems.

London: The Sunday Referee and The Patron Bookshop, 1934 - Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black morocco backed folding case. Faint spotting to free endpapers. An excellent copy in the jacket with some light spotting, minor nicks at the ends of the toned spine panel, and marks to the lower panel. First edition, first impression, presentation copy of Thomas's first book, inscribed by the poet on the front free endpaper, "To Nora from Dylan, March 1938". The recipient was Nora Summers (1892–1948), an artist and the lover of Yvonne Macnamara, Thomas's mother-in-law. Nora had studied at the Bristol School of Art and then the Slade in London, and married fellow artist Gerald Summers in 1912. In 1914 she became close to the family of painter Augustus John, and through him Yvonne and the Macnamara children, with whom she and Gerald lived communally for a few years. Yvonne and Nora's relationship was intense, and Caitlin later remembered Nora as "the father figure of our girlhood and an evil one", but the two fiery women did see eye-to-eye about art, with Caitlin acting as a model for Nora's burgeoning photographic hobby. Nora also enjoyed entertaining the young artistic friends of the Macnamaras, including Dylan Thomas, and she took a number of now-iconic photographs of the poet, including the image of Thomas smoking, and the photograph of the poet and his wife at Brown's Hotel in 1938. 18 poems was Thomas's first book, published in an edition of only 500 copies shortly after his 20th birthday, with 250 sets of sheets bound and sold a year after the first issue. This is one of the second issue copies with the Parton Press advertisement tipped-in between the half-title and title. Both issues are rare today, particularly so in the dust jacket and with presentation inscription. Hayward 343. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Living My Life [One-Volume Edition] - Inscribed

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1934. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. First one-volume edition of Goldman's monumental autobiography, an undisputed high-spot of women's writing and one of a few truly important 20th-century radical memoirs. Goldman was furious with Knopf for issuing the book in two volumes at the height of an economic depression, and considered the publication price of $7.50 to be exhorbitant. The book indeed sold poorly, despite strong reviews, and it has never been common. Knopf issued the one-volume edition in 1934. On February 1 the same year, after 15 years in exile, Goldman was re-admitted to the United States for a brief 90 day period, during which she lectured extensively. A significant copy, warmly inscribed on May Day, 1934, on the eve of her deportation from the U.S. to Stella Estall of Montreal, who organized and prepared a farewell dinner for Goldman and friends. "For Emma Goldman, deportation and exile were harsh punishments. Friends reported that just before and immediately after her tour, Goldman often sat at the Canadian border, looking longingly across to the United States, tears streaming down her face" (http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/goldman/MeetEmmaGoldman/emmagoldmaninexile.html). Octavo (22.5cm); black cloth, with titles stamped in red on spine and front panel; red topstain; x, 994, xxiiipp, followed by 7 leaves of half-tone plates. Signed by Goldman on the front endpaper, and lengthily inscribed by her on the second blank: "To Stella Estall / With deepest appreciation for your interest and your splendid efforts in behalf of the farewell dinner. / Cordially, Emma Goldman / Montreal. May First 1934." Forward lean, covers heavily rubbed, with occasional exposure to corners and lower board edges; both hinges cracked, though still holding; front endpaper heavily dust-soiled, with small chip to upper right corner of same; rear cover damp-stained, affecting rear endpaper and several terminal leaves; no better than Fair, but a nice association copy.

        Tender is the Night

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934 Illustrations by Edward Shenton. First edition, first printing, with Scribner's "A" present on copyright page (later printings omitted this publisher's code). Publisher's dark green cloth, ruled in blind and lettered in gilt, with front flap and rear panel of dust jacket tipped in to front endpapers, and with front panel of dust jacket tipped in to first free leaf. A very good copy with some light wear to extremities and very faint soiling to rear board, front hinge cracked but holding, pages age-toned and with some scattered creasing from use. Overall an attractive copy with the original dust jacket uniquely preserved. Bruccoli A14.I.a. Tender is the Night is Fitzgerald's last completed novel, based on the lives of American ex-patriots living in Paris and the French Riviera. The book is a complicated tale of love and lust, and gives reader's a glimpse into the characters' stories through a series of flashbacks scattered throughout the chronological plotline. Like many of Fitzgerald's works, Tender is the Night is semi-autobiographical in nature, with the author's friends serving as models for characters, including Pablo Picasso, the Cole Porters, and socialites Sara and Gerald Murphy, to whom the book is dedicated. Interestingly, Fitzgerald took the title "Tender is the Night" from a line in John Keats' poem "Ode to a Nightingale." . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. Illus. by Shenton, Edward.

TENDER IS THE NIGHT. A ROMANCE

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. Advance | Review Copy. Very Good binding. Quite rare, advance or review copy of the First Edition. Brucolli A14,I.a and Supplement (1980) only a handful of copies: "One copy bound in wrappers made from the dust jacket has been located at ViU ... It may have been used as an advance or review copy. [The Supplement notes a couple of additional copies]. The Scribners records indicate that 500 copies in wrappers were ordered; but since only one [three?] copy has been located, it seems doubtful that these copies were actually prepared." [Bruccoli, A,14.1.a] With corner loss to the top of the front panel affecting the "LD" in Fitzgerald, and the "S" in "is". With some "bleed" the verso of the front panel; and a bit of wrinkling and a light crease to the first blank leaf. There is a small stain to the leading edge of the textblock. Minor sunning to the spine. To call this uncommon would be an understatement. Very Good binding.

Autograph letter signed to William Force Stead.

Riversdale, Willbrook, Rathfarnham, Dublin: 26 September [1934] - Single leaf with Riversdale letterhead, autograph letter signed to recto only. Framed (370 x 320 mm). Usual folds, excellent condition. A fascinating letter written by Yeats to his friend William Force Stead (1884-1967), expounding the symbolic meanings in the ring that Yeats had had made for him by Edmund Dulac. Stead was an American-born poet, literary scholar, and Anglican clergyman, who studied at Oxford and then became chaplain and fellow at Worcester College from 1926 to 1933, when he was forced to resign due to his conversion to Catholicism. He was a friend of C. S. Lewis, Edmund Blunden, and of T. S. Eliot whom he baptised into the Anglican faith in 1927. He was later responsible for discovering the manuscript of the insane Christian poet Christopher Smart's Jubilate Agno, published in 1939 as Rejoice in the Lamb: A Song from Bedlam, and thus for bringing the antics of Smart's cat Jeoffry to the attention of the world. When Yeats was living in Oxford in 1920, and deeply involved in the occult investigations that would culminate in A Vision (1925), Stead introduced himself by sending him a copy of his latest book of poems. He was invited to come and visit, and remembering their first meeting in a later talk entitled "Oxford Poets", in which he mentioned his anticipation that "since boyhood I had thought of him as the Magician Merlin harping in the Forest of Brocéliande". He was likely not disappointed, discovering Yeats in the company of his wife, a Hindu priest with "a long flowing orange coloured robe", and the Jesuit Father Martindale, "in the midst of a discourse on spiritualism and its evidences of survival". Yeats explained to Stead that he had not read his poems but been compelled to invite him because on touching Stead's book he had been visited by the odour of violets. Yeats, ever sensitive to spiritual missives in the form of "sweet smells" (A Vision), and particularly that of violets which he associated with sanctity, thus felt that Stead had been favourably flagged up for him by his spiritual instructors and began to cultivate a significant friendship and correspondence. Yeats later penned a reference to help Stead continue his academic career in America: "I have known Mr W. Force Stead since 1920. I think him an imaginative scholar with considerable critical ability and knowledge of English literature. His own writings show that he is sensitive to rhythm and style. He is a charming personality." He also did Stead the considerable courtesy of including two of his poems in the Oxford Book of Modern Verse that he controversially edited in 1936. Stead, for his part, concluded his "Oxford Poets" talk with the following ringing encomium, describing Yeats as: "the greatest poet and also the most remarkable man I have ever known. No words can revive the flash and fire of his mind, or his capacity for filling a room with his electric personality, lifting us out of ourselves, and carrying us away into regions of cloud-capped towers and gorgeous palaces and airy tongues that syllable men's names. Whenever I walked home after an evening with him, I heard the stars singing above me, and the memory of him remains an everlasting example of the truth that a man of genius is far greater than anything his genius creates." In the present letter, which is apparently the last known from Yeats to Stead, the aged poet explains the meaning of the symbols on the ring designed for him by Edmund Dulac: "The Butterfly is the main symbol in my ring - the ring I always wear - the other symbol is the hawk. The hawk is the straight road of logic, the butterfly the crooked road of intuition - the hawk pounces, the butterfly flutters. I do not know any book upon the subject. I got like you a vision if I remember rightly." Stead had clearly in his preceding letter mentioned some spiritualist experiment involving a candle, of the type Yeats and Stead are known to have explored together, as Yeats goes on: "I suggest that your candle is knowled [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Man Ray: Photographs 1920-1934 Paris; Photographies 1920-1934 Paris

Hartford, Connecticut:: James Thrall Soby: Random House, NY & Cahiers d'Art, Paris:, n.d. [1934].. First edition [spuriously stated 'Second Edition'].. Comb binding. Very Good. [vi], 104 [+8], [ii]. The contents - the text pages, and Ray's wonderful photographs - are clean and unmarked, corners good, with small tears to the binder holes at the spine ends. There is a faint greying of some white page areas from offsetting, and the residue of a small pencilled price to the title page. The colour photograph front cover is clean and complete, with a crease across the upper corner, tiny creases adjacent to the spine, a few short rubbed striations to the top edge, and minimal scuffs to the edges. The white rear cover has a few minor marks, a 5mm closed tear to the leading edge, and a small loss of laminate to the bottom corner. Large quarto, 31x24.5cms, with the original white plastic comb binder. As often, this is damaged: the top two circlets have gone, and the third is present but detached: however, the pages turn easily without snagging. Text in French and English throughout (German and English in the case of Duchamp). Man Ray's introduction is set at the beginning of the book; the four contributors' texts, which introduce groupings of the photographs, are titled: The visages of woman; Men before the mirror; When things dream; and Rayographs 1921-1928. A legendary production - and a very satisfactory copy. [The 'Deuxieme Edition' / 'Second Edition' printed onto the title pages of unsold (first edition) copies was the publisher's ruse in the hope of boosting sales.] Now housed and conserved in a custom-made felt-lined black buckram-covered Solander box with Man Ray's name blocked in silver to the spine to match the cover title.         Mein Weltbild.

Amsterdam: Querido, 1934 - Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine and front board in gilt. Gilt entirely gone from spine, two faint watermarks to front cover, front inner hinge cracked but holding, a few light pencil underlines, otherwise clean and fresh, a good copy. First edition, inscribed by Albert Einstein as "A. Einstein" in 1934, with two verses of his composition, likely to his son-in-law Rudolf Kayser ("Rudi"), with the felicitation "Des lieben Freundin zum Gruss" ("Greetings to my dear friend"). Einstein occasionally inscribed Mein Weltbild in verse; the copy inscribed to his mentor Max Talmey had a shorter though related two-line rhyming inscription. The inscription in this copy is six lines of verse, plus felicitation, beginning: "Was der Fëder that entfahren / That der Rudi aufbewharen / Was mir selber längst entschwunden / Wird de Leser aufgebunden " ("What the pen let slip, Rudi saved ") Mein Weltbid ("My World View") comprises five essays by Einstein on science, religion, politics, and philosophy: "The World As I See It", "Of Politics and Pacifism", "Germany 1933", "Judaism", and "Science". Since his childhood in Prussia Einstein had been opposed to militant nationalism and enforced conformity, even renouncing his German citizenship for that of Switzerland as a teenager. As he grew in stature as a physicist he began using his celebrity to promote his philosophical ideals – internationalism, pacifism, and Zionism – earning him much vitriol from the far-right but endearing him to millions of others around the world. This edition is entirely in German; the first English language edition was published in the US in 1949. [Attributes: First Edition]

        AH34 - Visages

S.V.U. Manes, Prague 1934 - 21.5 x 30.5cm. A set limited to 100 copies, consisting of four sheets with half title, title, reviews of Hoffmeister's work and a list of the contents, plus 36 caricatures of political and cultural figures including, amongst others, Adolf Hitler, Jean Cocteau, James Joyce and Boris Pasternack, Max Ernst, George Bernard Shaw, and G K Chesterton. The half title is signed and inscribed by Hoffmeister to the cartoonist David Low: "For David Low / From his pupil / A Hoffmeister/ Praha 1947" Adolf Hoffmeister (1902-1973) was a writer and artist. He edited one of the main Czech daily newspapers, Lidové noviny (1928-30) and the main literary paper, Literární noviny (1930-32), and set up an anti-fascist magazine, Simplicus, in the 1930s after the German satiric magazine Simplicissimus which was banned by the Nazis. During the war he was imprisoned by the Germans but managed to escape and make his way to the United States. After the war he became the Czech ambassador to France but as the regime grew more Stalinist, he left the diplomatic service and became Professor at the Prague Academy of Decorative Arts, where he headed a special department for children¿s book illustrations and cartoons. After the collapse of the ¿Prague Spring¿ of the sixties he left his country for the second time, not returning until 1970. A scarce signed item, with a little faint toning to the edges of the pages. The original paper wrappers are brittle and chipped with a number of closed tears. They are now protected by a plastic sleeve. The original slip case has a red label to the front. It is toned and rubbed and is starting to split along the top edge and at the foot of the spine. An unusual and scarce signed item.         Dessins et peintures d'Asie. Exécutés au cours de l'Expedition Citroen Centre-Asie. Troisième mission G.-M. Haarrdt - L. Audouin-Dubreuil.

Jules Meynel Paris 1934 - Folio (39 x 29 cm). Suite of 50 colour plates with "Croquis de route et notes de voyages" as a separate volume. Original card folder; some light soiling and spotting. Number 33 from the limited edition of 500 copies. Finely produced portfolio of illustrations by the official artist of the Citroen Central Asia Expedition, capturing the peoples and landscapes of Persia, Turkistan, Afghanistan and Mongolia. The third Citroen mission, The Yellow Cruise, took place between April 1931 and February 1932. This motorised expedition followed Citroen's previous successful mission across the Sahara and The Black Cruise in Central Africa. This time the route went across Asia from Beirut to Beijing, amounting to 13,000 km. It was the first time anyone had driven a car in the Himalayas and the convoy also set the world altitude record for cars - 4208m - in the process. Yakovlev produced a captivating record of the peoples he saw on the route, including Persians, Mongolians, Kyrghyzs and Afghans. By the artist's own admission, it was the interesting characters in traditional attire that he most enjoyed drawing, especially those with distinctive head-dresses. Yakovlev was particularly fascinated with the Baghdadi Kurds, a people whose proud and dignified air Yakovlev found very attractive: 'If I hadn't known that the Baghdadi Kurds who came to pose for me were just porters handling supplies for the expedition,' Yakovlev wrote, 'I could easily have mistaken them for descendants of the princes of One Thousand and One Nights' (A.Yakovlev, Putevye zapiski o puteshestvii po Azii v ekspeditsii avtomobil'nogo obshchestva 'Sitroen', 25 April 1931). Yakovlev was born in St Petersburg in 1887. He showed a prodigious talent as a draftsman and artist from a young age. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts and was awarded the status of Artist under the Tsarist regime in 1913, followed by a scholarship to study abroad. It was the start of a lifetime of travels. He and a fellow artist headed for Italy, then Spain. Their modernist-influenced exhibitions back in St Petersburg were met with mixed reactions. Nevertheless, Yakovlev won another scholarship, from 1917-1919, to the Far East, and travelled to Mongolia, China and Japan. He returned to Paris and took French citizenship. By the time of La Croisiere Noire in 1924 Yakovlev had become an expert at painting on the spot in difficult conditions. He returned to Paris with his work and proceeded to produce prints and limited edition publications as well as a celebrated exhibition. Yakovlev was presented with a Legion of Honour by the French Government in 1926.
