Berlin: Neuer Deutscher Verlag, 1934. |~||~||~||~||~| From 1930 to 1938 Heartfield provided photomontages that were published in the Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung.         Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

Le Vasseur Paris 1934 - Two volumes, 4to (26.6 x 19.9 cm), copy number 2 from a limited edition of 720 copies, one of 19 copies on japon impérial with two extra suites of plates (one with 25 colour plates, one with 25 in black) each within a glassine sleeve and an original gouache by the artist, 20 pochoir plates and illustrations by Barbier, original printed wrappers, uncut, cream folders with morocco lettering-pieces, cream watered silk covered slipcase (lightly soiled), an excellent set. Barbier's last major work. This is copy #2, of only 19 with an original drawing by Barbier and two extra suites of plates. That he would turn his attention to Choderlos de Laclos' great novel of sexual intrigue was inevitable. Eighteenth century France, particularly in the decades before the Revolution, had become his favourite country of the mind. Here Barbier was prepared to illustrate the text rather than use it as a point of departure for decorative compositions. Though he did not neglect the opportunities for decorative treatment of setting andcostume which the novel provided, he for once stuck to the narrative and presented all the big scenes in its intricate plot. In doing so, Barbier gives us the finest illustrations of the novel since Monnet and Gérard's 1796 edition. The original illustration is not one of those from the book but depicts a similar scene, with a well-dressed and over-made-up lady sitting on a couch next to a young man. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

And Quite Flows the Don [Signed]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1934. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the SCARCE first American edition, first printing (some foxing to the gutters and spine edges, some toning to the board edges), in a Very Good example of the even scarcer dust jacket (some modest chipping to the spine ends and flap turn corners, a few short closed tears, minor soiling to the white rear spine panel, general modest edge wear), SIGNED BY MIKHAIL SHOLOKHOV on a small card affixed to the title page which signature he has dated "26xi65" with a small underscore. First published in Russian as "The Quiet Don", the work was issued in serial form from 1928 to 1940. While the portion of the novel (being only the first half of the book) was published in English translation in 1934 as "And Quite Flows the Don", the entire work was not published in English until 1940. This 1934 partial publication is itself quite uncommon, especially in the dust jacket. The novel tells the tale of the Cossacks living in the Don River Valley during the turbulent early Twentieth Century, a period which saw World War I, the Russian Revolution(s), the Russian Civil War, and the Bolsheviks' harsh repression of the Cossacks. Quite well received, the work became one of the most-read Russian novels of all time. In awarding him the 1965 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy, in support of its choice, spoke of "the artistic power and integrity with which, in his epic of the Don, Sholokhov has given expression to a historic phase in the life of the Russian people" and the Presentation Speech stated: "With magnificent realism the book portrays the unique character of the Cossack, the traditional mixture of cavalryman and farmer, with instincts that seem to conflict with one another but which nevertheless allow themselves to be welded together to form a firmly co-ordinated whole. There is no glamorization. The coarse and savage streaks in the Cossack temperament are displayed openly; nothing is hidden or glossed over, but, at the same time, one is aware of an undercurrent of respect for all that is human." The novel was three times adapted to film (1931, 1958, and 2006). In our experience, Sholokhov's signature is rather scarce and copies of this 1934 publication of the first portion of the novel complete with the dust jacket and in collectable condition are uncommon to the market. A Very Good copy of the first American publication of any portion of Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov's masterpiece for which he won the 1965 Noble Prize in Literature, SIGNED BY MIKHAIL SHOLOKHOV. QUITE SCARCE.

        Bréviaire des échecs

Librairie Stock, Paris 1934 - xii+318 pages with diagrams. Small octavo (7" x 4 3/4") bound in orange cloth with gilt lettering in black label to spine and black lettering to red label to front cover. Inscribed to Julius du Mont. First edition. This work is an introductory book on chess written by Xavier Tartakover and published in 1934 and now considered a classic. Tartakover drafted the Breviary after its best period of activity, which has earned him the title of International Grand Master in 1950. The book has a strong focus on openings, chess theory; however, the playful tone of the Breviary not only makes it accessible to novice players but also inimitable and distracting. Julius du Mont (December 15, 1881, Paris – April 7, 1956, Hastings, England) was a pianist, piano teacher, chess player, journalist, editor and writer. He studied music at the Frankfurt Conservatoire and at Heidelberg, and became a concert pianist. He emigrated to England as a young man and became a successful piano teacher. Among his pupils was Edna Iles. He settled in London and also gained a reputation as a strong chess player. He won club and county chess championships in the period leading up to World War I, and showed his mastery of the English language by writing a manual on the Lewis gun. After the war, chess writing took up more and more of his time. Perhaps his most famous work was 500 Master Games of Chess (1952), written in collaboration with Savielly Tartakower.Condition: Inscribed on the half title page. Corners bumped, scattered foxing to preliminary leaves, some internal soiling, modern cloth with original wrapper laid on front cover, slightly scuffed else a very good copy of a very unique association copy.
