Scarce Typed Letter Signed on personal stationery

South Bend, IN, 1934. unbound. 1 page, 10.5 x 7.25 inches, South Bend, Indiana, October 30, 1934. Written to journalist James Hollister, editor of the Evening Eagle, in part: "How graciously you write concerning those who are privileged to make your acquaintance!...Out of experiences of three score years, I can truthfully say that even when we do not merit the depth of the kindly things said or written concerning us, we really do find renewed strength to carry on in activities that receive the approval of the men whose judgment means much to us..." Two horizontal folds and faint creasing, but still in very good condition. Father of Notre Dame Football" for his success in expanding the football program from an intramural activity to a full-fledged sport. He played quarterback and served as head coach from 1896 - 1898, compiling a record of 12-6-1. In 1897 he became the first coach to employ a place kick from the scrimmage, a tactic that soon thereafter became a regular part of the aggressive play of all football teams. Hering was also the first basketball coach at Notre Dame, coaching one season from 1897-1898, and helmed the school's baseball team from 1897-1899. In addition to his many sports accomplishments, Hering is called the "Father of Mother's Day" for his endless work in promoting the establishment of a national holiday. His name has long been obscured in the shadows of Knute Rockne; this is why his letters rarely come to market.

Detection of neutrons liberated from beryllium by gamma rays: A new technique for inducing radioactivity. Offprint

1934 - Szilard, Leo (1898-1964) and Thomas A. Chalmers. Detection of neutrons liberated from beryllium by gamma rays: A new technique for inducing radioactivity. Offprint from Nature 134 (1934). Single sheet, unbound. [2]pp. 216 x 134 mm. Crease in upper left corner, lower right corner chipped, light toning but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed in the upper right corner in an unidentified hand: "With compliments of L. Szilard." First Edition, Offprint Issue. In 1933, after fleeing from Germany to England to escape the Nazis, Hungarian theoretical physicist Leo Szilard came up with the idea of the nuclear chain reaction while crossing a street in London. He filed his first patent on the chain reaction in March 12, 1934 and that summer, in collaboration with T. A. Chalmers, he began a series of experiments on the beryllium nucleus using radium owned by the physics department at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College. "The beryllium nucleus was so lightly bound [Szilard] suspected he could knock neutrons out of it not only with alpha particles or neutrons but even with gamma rays or high-energy X rays . . . Their first experiment demonstrated a brilliantly simple method for separating isotopes of iodine by bombarding an iodine compound with neutrons. They then used this Szilard-Chalmers effect (as it came to be called), which was extremely sensitive, as a tool for measuring the production of neutrons in their second experiment: knocking neutrons out of beryllium using the gamma radiation from radium" (Rhodes, The Making of the Atomic Bomb, p. 215). The results of this second experiment are described in the present offprint. To Szilard’s disappointment, beryllium proved to be an unsuitable candidate for chain reaction; it was not until 1939, after the discovery of nuclear fission, that Szilard and Enrico Fermi were able to produce a nuclear chain reaction in uranium. The first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction—which made possible the atomic bomb—was accomplished by Fermi and his associates in 1942. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        The Cadaver of Gideon Wyck.

New York, Farrar Rhinehart. 1934. New York, Farrar Rhinehart. 1934. First Edition. Near fine in publisher's black cloth titled in white, the white paint in this example being fresh, clean and unmarred by the customary flaking. The red top edge is a trifle faded in spots and dusty in others, all other edges uncut. Internally clean. In a lovely example of the extremely rare Lynd Ward dustwrapper (he also created the frontispiece for this title) depicting a shambling humanoid figure and an emaciated corpse on a gurney, all in the customary Cabinet of Dr.Caligari high contrast black and white style. The spine panel is slightly browned with some light superficial chipping to the spine ends and a little cosmetic scuffing to extremities. A lovely example. Possibly the best part of the dustwrapper is the public health warning printed on the back; 'WARNING: People unable to sustain violent shock are advised that they read this book on their own responsibility. AND THE PUBLISHERS REALLY MEAN THIS.' Publisher's don't seem to write blurbs like that anymore. A fine stirring shocker written in superior style concerned with medical experimantation and the perils of genetic meddling. Highly controversial at the time (which perhaps accounts for Laing's credit as 'Editor' rather than author) for its dwelling on the possibilities of experimentation on pregnant women to alter the nature of their issue. Alexander Kinnan Laing was an alumni of Dartmouth, a poet, the editor of a number of periodicals and an educator of some standing and repute. Immediately after graduating from dartmouth he sailed around the world on the SS Leviathan as an ordinary seaman and seems to have later become something of an authority on clipper ships. A lovely copy of a scarce piece of weirdness. Bleiler.

La passion de Roland Garros EDITION ORIGINALE SP pas de GP ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE

Paris: Gallimard, 1934. Fine. Gallimard, Paris 1934, 12x19cm, relié. - Edition for of wich no leading copies exists, one of the review copies. Bound in full carton covered flight, smooth back, as part of shagreen red guards and contreplats of handmade paper, canvas cover and spine preserved. Important autograph signed by the author on half-title page of Hubert Person. Our copy also includes, on the first watch, an original photograph of Roland Garros taken at an airshow and another guard, this handwritten accuracy Jean Ajalbert in achieving and history of bookbinding who dresses this autograph dedication of the author "This copy of MS is connected to the first German aircraft machine he had descended canvas. Roland had brought me a large piece in which I made him a portfolio that I sent him to Zorndorf. " Jean Ajalbert attached to this menu autograph dedication of the author, signed by Roland Garros, the room where the two men met on the occasion of the arrival of the Paris-Rome A volunteer run, 2 January 1911. 1914, Garros dream be the first to shoot down a German plane. On 19 August 1914, despite a bold pursuit, it fails due to lack of skill on his passenger charge to take the snap on the enemy. To modernize fighter aircraft and convince the high command of the strategic power of aviation Garros is developing a system enabling the pilot to fire through the propeller. So the controls of the first car hunter on April 1, 1915, Roland Garros shot down a German Albatros pulling his gun through the axis of the aircraft. In a letter to Ajalbert Garros reflects his interest in the relics of this historic victory: "I was in a car to see the debris; the first arrivals had won all autograph dedication of the authors, weapons, badges, etc.. I am active steps to recover. (...) Needless to say my success as complete satisfaction (...) I alone have fought without passenger. But what makes me most happy is the feeling of having created alone, and despite all the risks of the unknown in aviation, the instrument that brought me success. This is above all, my joy. "This victory and the following (when captured on April 18, he shot three of the five enemy aircraft destroyed since the beginning of the war) does not, however, succeed in convincing the French military authorities in the interest of his invention . The Germans, on the contrary, recover the wreckage of his plane and develop thanks to him that the Fokker dominate the sky long and cost the lives of Roland Garros October 5, 1918. Exceptional relic of one of the first aerial combat History. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!
