'T. E. Lawrence' In Arabia and After.

London: Jonathan Cape, , 1934. Octavo, original red orange buckram, matching top-stain, title gilt to the spine and front board. In the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece after Augustus John and 11 other plates, 5 folding maps. A touch cocked, light toning, else very good in rubbed and soiled jacket, lacking part of the front panel and spine. First edition. A superb association copy of this highly influential early biography which was central to the creation of the Lawrence myth. Inscribed by the author to his secretary on the front free endpaper, "To Doris Josselyn, 'Adjutant-General to the Forces' by which this book was carried forward and the objective toilfully attained - with all good wishes from B.H. Liddell Hart, 26th February 1934"; and with a short pencilled note from Lawrence, dated 26.VI.33, loosely inserted, "Miss D. Josselyn, You will see that it's Liddell Hart's fault if ["that" struck out] all this mess of scribbling around his text affronts your eye. He asked for it, and for it to be sent to you. Soit - T.E.S." Liddell Hart submitted the typescript, and/or proofs of the book to Lawrence for his critique, which was duly forthcoming (see King's College, LHMA, Liddell 9/13). B.H. Liddell Hart was one of the most influential military thinkers of the twentieth century, and considered that his friend Lawrence "was more deeply steeped in knowledge of war than any other general of the First World War"; a judgement that has been seen as hyperbolic by many in the intervening 80 years, but which in view of current thinking on the increasing prevalence of asymmetric warfare, and counterinsurgency operations seems remarkably prescient.

Typed letter signed in full to the noted American band composer and leader Edwin Franko Goldman

      - Text in English.1/2 page, single-spaced. Large octavo, 266 x 184 mm. Dated Brookline, Massachusetts, January 31, 1934. With Schoenberg's name and address handstamped at upper left corner. In English.Schoenberg comments about a commissioned translation, by Goldman, of a text he had originally written in German. He is not quite satisfied with Goldman's work and requests a new translation:"Dear Mr. Goldman, you find enclosed the translation you have send [!] me with your letter of January 29th. There you find also some marginal notes where I have signed some of the parts of the translation, by which I cannot be satisfied.I understand your intention in translating my words and I can well appreciate it. Surely it would be of a great advantage if all I have written could be said in such a manner that everybody can conceive it. But surely also: The thought would loose [!] so much of its dep[th] and of its prospect, that I am forced to renounce another succes[s] of my word, than an [in?]adequate-one."Manuscript annotation to upper right corner in an unknown hand (?Goldman's): "Ans." [?Answer].Slightly browned and stained; creased at folds; with minor remnants of archival mounting tape to blank verso. Edwin Franko Goldman (1878-1956) was a band composer and bandleader living in New York. The letter inadvertently testifies to the newly-immigrated Schoenberg's struggle with the English language, but also to Schoenberg's uncompromising nature. In the end, Goldman decided to publish Schoenberg's article in German. See Schoenberg's letter to Goldman, February 3, 1934, published in Arnold Schoenberg: Sämtliche Werke Section IV: Orchestral Works. Series B, Volume 13 edited by Rudolf Stephan (Mainz: B. Schott's Söhne; Vienna: Universal Edition, 1993), p. xxiii. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Tender Is the Night

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1934 - First edition. Lightly worn cloth, near fine in an attractive, first issue dustwrapper with an unfaded spine and some minor repair and restoration at the extremities. Fitzgerald had all but fallen off the map when this, his last completed novel, was issued. A portrait of expatriates on the French Riviera, it was supposedly based on Gerald and Sara Murphy but is as likely based on the Fitzgeralds themselves. The 1962 film version by Henry King, the last of his many films adapted from literary novels, featured Jason Robards and Jennifer Jones. Housed in a custom clamshell case. A very nice copy of a desirable and very uncommon title, almost never encountered without fading to the spine. *Connolly 100*. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph musical quotation signed "Karol Szymanowski" from his Symphonie concertante (Symphony No. 4, Op. 60)

      - Notated on a partial album leaf, ca. 73 x 149 mm. Signed and dated London, October 29, 1934 in dark blue ink.Two measures on one staff with treble clef, 3/4 time signature, and a key signature of one flat. Autograph titling ("Symphonie Concertante") to upper margin. With the autograph signature of noted German soprano Ria Ginster (1898-1985) in black ink to verso.Slightly worn and soiled; verso with minor wear, brief annotation in pencil, and remnants of transparent tape to margins. The Symphonie Concertante, for solo piano and orchestra, was premiered in Pozna on October 9, 1932, with the composer at the piano. Although he dedicated it to the great pianist Anton Rubinstein, Szymanowski intended to perform the piece himself, on as many stages as possible, to earn money. He therefore "shaped the solo part with a view to his own performance capabilities, adjusting it to his hand; hence, the work is very different from the typical 'pianism' of contemporary concertos - those by Maurice Ravel or Prokofiev. In order to add brilliance, somewhat lacking in the piano part, Szymanowski increased the role of the orchestra, in a colourful and impressive style. so that the soloists'; figures are constantly being supplemented and "ornamented" by the picturesque and brilliant timbres of the symphonic ensemble, to a degree which goes beyond the usual convention of the concerto form and the idea of a dialogue." "Symphonie concertante for piano and orchestra op. 60." karolszymanowski.pl.Szymanowski, a noted Polish pianist and composer, was much influenced by the music of his countryman Chopin, Polish folk music, and a number of other composers including Strauss, Debussy and Ravel.         JEUNE FILLE DE SAIPAN ET FLEURS D'HIBISCUS. 'MARIANES.' YOUNG GIRL OF SAIPAN AND

Japan 1934, Jacoulet. A single deluxe large print, sheet. size ca. 35 x 46 cm.,print size ca. 30 x 39.5 cm., woodblock. printed by hand on hand-made paper, carved by Yamagishi,. printed by Ushibara. FIRST LIMITED & ONLY NUMBERED EDITION. JACOULET'S FIRST PRINT ! NUMBER 71 OF 150 NUMBERED COPIES This being number 71 of 150 prints. * This is Jacoulet's FIRST print, and the print That launched his artistic career. It is also the first print in a projected flower series which included eight other prints. * The mica background is flawless & magnificent. Other printers who tried this delicate technique later saw this mica chip and flaked off. However, Jacoulet's master printer Ushibara expertly applied mica with such skill and produced a flawless example. * OUR COPY: Our copy is the FIRST PRINTING, of which 150 impressions were done, and is distinguished by the "two frown" lines found on the woman's forehead. Per Miles p.89, "this is omitted in the second edition." . This very RARE print is signed in pencil "Paul Jacoulet" then "Fan" sealed with his cinnabar chop [Hanko]. The paper is watermarked "PJ" in the lower left corner. Miles has also pointed out on p.128 that: "The South Seas prints were all created from sketches and paintings done between 1929 and 1936... Since many were lost because of World War II bombing of Tokyo, several of them are among the rarest & most desirable of all the artist's oeuvre." . Then Miles then cites a list of these "most desirable" prints, and begins with this print as number one on that list ! See Miles below. *** CONDITION: There is a bit of toning to the margin, otherwise, a flawless example. The sparkle of the crushed mica is truly beautiful and represents a high-water mark in Japanese woodblock hand-printing technique. Truly lovely as the day it was published. Framed and glazed. We have posted two color photos of this to our home page: the first under "cover" is a digital photo of this print; the second is the color frontispiece from Miles under "illustration 1." * A copy recently sold at auction for $1800. * REFERENCE: R. Miles; THE PRINTS OF PAUL JACOULET, illustrated as the color frontispiece and again on p.41, as item number 1, descriptive text on p.89. . Per Miles: "Jacoulet's first print was made from his favorite South Seas watercolor. The original depicted a far more worn and prematurely aged creature than did either of the editions... The paler coloring and introspective expression of the first impression gave way to crisper, brighter colors under Jacoulet's direct supervision. There is a rich silver mica background." *** Color scans can be sent by email. Images displayed may not always be the exact photo of the copy in stock for sale at any given time.         Eleven New Cantos XXXI - XLI [SIGNED]

New York: Farrar & Rinehart Incorporated, 1934. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good +. A Fine, Superior, copy of the first American Edition, first printing first issue -- with the error in the list of Pound's works facing the title page -- (a bare touch of edge wear), in a Very Good + dust jacket (some general toning, light wear to the spine ends and panel corners, two short closed tears: one where the rear panel meets the upper spine and one to the front panel's bottom edge, and one tiny tear where the rear panel meets the spine edge), SIGNED BY EZRA POUND on the title page; a relatively uncommon book of which only 1,500 copies were printed with only 1,000 of such copies having been used for this, the first issue [with the remaining 500 copies having been used for the second issue (New Directions, 1940]). Considered to be one of the most significant works of modernist poetry, the Cantos was issued over a period of time in multiple separate volumes and was left incomplete at Pound's death. The first four Cantos contained in this volume deal extensively in the emergence of the newly-born United States, quoting extensively from the writings of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, and others. Those and the volume's other Cantos stretch an arc from the revolutionary times of Jefferson and the forming of a new nation to the fascism of Mussolini. Copies in the dust jacket are surprisingly uncommon and signed copies are scarce. A Fine, Superior, copy of the first edition, first printing, first issue, SIGNED BY EZRA POUND. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

Roosevelt was the first sitting president to visit Hawaii. Also included are a number of fine scenic shots of beaches, Diamond Head, fine buildings in Honolulu, and more.         After Worlds Collide

Stanley paul and Co [1934], London - 8vo. 288pp. + 32pp. ads. Bound in publisher's terracotta cloth titled in black to spine and front board, some minor grubbiness here and there and light bumping to spine ends but a very good copy, strong and handsome. In a bright, clean, unclipped example of the vividly illustrated dustwrapper, some chipping to extremities, slight inoffensive loss to spine ends and with two discreet area of tape reinforcement to verso. A very striking example of a book seldom seen in wrapper, or in fact seldom seen, the US first is a far more readily available book. The sequel to the wildly successful "When World's Collide." which featured the imminent destruction of earth via a collision with two rogue planets (named Bronson Alpha and Bronson Beta, which I guess is an improvement on "Earth"). This state of affairs requires the hasty construction of a space ark to colonise Bronson Beta, a journey across a chaotic and anarchic US, a quantity of natural catastrophes and the similtaneous launch of several ark ships from different nations (the French don't make it, spoiler alert). This sequel picks up where the first novel ended (I realise that sequels usually do that) with our intrepid survivors exploring the mysterious expanse of Bronson Beta, discovering the ruins of a lost and considerably advanced civilisation and, naturally and inevitably, starting a war with the Russian, German and Chinese survivors, who refer to themselves as "The Dominion of Asian Realists" proving that geography is just so last planet. Apparently this is just manifest destiny no matter what has happened elsewhere in the universe. There's the usual jealousy over who gets to keep the best looking woman, she naturally doesn't get much of a say, and squabbles over leadership. It's about the most sci-fi piece of sci-fi I've ever catalogue. An edition that is tricky to locate in first, and even more so in dustwrapper. mh [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
