From a Walt Disney Silly Symphony: The Wise Little Hen" in Good Housekeeping, June 1934

International Magazine Company 1934 - Vol. XCVIII, No. 6. 234 pp. Very Good condition. Illustrated covers are bright, spine has a bit of loss along front edge, slight roll; cover has a few faint stains and scuffs. Internally near fine. The official first appearance of the beloved cartoon character Donald Duck was in a comic on pg. 37 of this issue of the popular magazine Good Housekeeping. It was a preview of sorts of the cartoon The Wise Little Hen, well-known as Donald Duck's celluloid debut. Here he's just "Duck" and his sailor duds are unmistakable, although his distinctive voice and combative character would have to wait. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Doctor Martino and other stories

First Edition New York Harrison Smith & Robert Haas MCMXXXIV [1934] First Printing (same date on title and copyright pages). 8vo: [8],371,[1]pp. Publisher's navy blue cloth, spine and upper cover stamped in gilt, top edge stained yellow; typographic dust jacket designed by Arthur Hawkins, Jr. and priced $2.50. About Fine (barring collector's bookplate to front paste down and offsetting to pp 90-91 from publisher's postcard laid in), with bright gilt and crisp, clean pages; in much better than Near Fine jacket, spine panel tanned (as typical) and barely rubbed but lettering and design still vibrant. Petersen A16.1.b. Fine-Faulkner's second collection of short stories in uncommonly collectible condition. The title story, about the power of platonic love, first appeared in the November 1931 issue of Harper's. In fact, only two stories, "Black Magic" and "The Leg," are new. "Smoke" marks Faulkner's first foray into the detective story, in the tradition of Edgar Allan Poe and Conan Doyle, and a number of the stories, including "Beyond" and "The Leg" (about a haunting by an amputated limb) have supernatural elements.         I, Claudius. From the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius Emperor of the Romans born B.C. 10 murdered and deified A.D. 54.

London: Arthur Barker, 1934. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.494. With a folding family tree of the Julio-Claudian dynasty to rear. In publisher's black cloth with gilt titles to spine. With original pictorial dust jacket designed by John Aldridge. Bottom edge untrimmed.Jacket spine lightly sunned, with some light wear and very minor chipping to the top edge. Crisp and clean internally; likely unread. A fine copy of the book in a very good jacket. Arguably the defining piece of Roman historical fiction from the twentieth century, Graves' classic fanciful autobiography of Rome's fourth Emperor builds a tangled web of family feuds and internecine murder from hints provided by Tacitus and Suetonius. The story was dramatised by the BBC in 1976, staring Derek Jacobi, and has since gone on to inspire the tone of the acclaimed series 'Rome' (2005-07). Graves was a gifted classicist at Charterhouse and later Oxford, but decided to pursue literature and poetry after he completed his degree. As well as contributing a translation of Apuleius' 'The Golden Ass' to the Penguin Classics collection, he also published a controversial encyclopaedia of Greek Myths containing some of his own original theories, generally rejected by the academic community.

        Point du jour

First edition, of which there were no large paper copies, a service de presse (advance) copy. With an exceptional inscription from André Breton to André Malraux: "à André Malraux avec confiance et espoir. André Breton [For André Malraux with confidence and hope. André Breton]".A surprising meeting of two writers who were "by nature fundamentally dissimilar." Nonetheless, Malraux's and Breton's destinies crossed at least twice. The first time was in 1924 when Malraux, then a young and practically unknown author, was arrested over the Angkor affair. Breton received Clara Malraux at his home and offered her his help in getting Malraux out, making his case in "Nouvelles littéraires": "We learned from the paper that the young author of Lunes en Papier [Paper Moons]has pleaded "guilty" of the appropriation of two or three stone dancers in a practically unknown temple on the outskirts of Angkor. But who really concerns themselves with the conservation, in their country of origin, of these works of antiquity? I don't want to know, but I can well imagine without exaggeration thatAndré Malrauxwill find himselfprevented from creating a more valuable work than the one he endangered."It was in 1934 that the two men met following the riots on the 6th February. André Malraux signed the "Call to Arms" and "Inquiry into Unity of Action" put forth by Breton against the "very real Fascist menace which showed itself in France on the 6th February." His taking this stand led to the creation of a "Committee of Vigilance of Anti-Fascist Intellectuals," to which both writers belonged. From this shared engagement was born a discreet but lasting friendship. Breton, thus, quoted Malraux's speech to the Congress of Soviet Writers more than once. After the war, he paid homage to Malraux twice, calling him "one of the best qualified spirits of the age."A handsome inscription that makes reference to their shared struggle and a Surrealist premonition of the title of Malraux's forthcoming great anti-Fascist novel.         Ulysses

First Printing New York Random House 1934 First (authorized) American Edition. 8vo: xviii,774pp. Publisher's cream-colored cloth stamped in red and black, beveled edges, chocolate-colored top edge; first state cream-colored dust jacket, designed by Ernst Reichl (whose name along the leading edge of the front panel is now presumed to designate the first state), printed in red and black, priced $3.50. Chocolate-colored cloth-covered clamshell box with red leather spine labels gilt. A superb?Fine?copy, bright, tight and probably unread; in a just about Fine jacket, very lightly rubbed to toe of spine panel, slightly darkened at head. Slocum & Cahoon A21. Connolly, Modern Movement 42. Fine Set from the text of a copy of the unauthorized first American edition (Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1927), incorporating most of its typographical errors and adding several new ones. "Ulysses is not a great novel in the sense of A la recherché du temps perdu. The characters do not develop. It has no consistent tragic grandeur and bogs down in several stylistic exercises which have nothing to do with the novel proper; yet the early Deadelus section, the middle parts of Bloom and the Nightown orgy and Molly's final reverie stand out like Gaudi's unfinished cathedral. The whole plan fails through Joyce's intellectual preference for language rather than people?yet somehow it does achieve greatness like a ruined temple soaring from a jungle . . ."         Lysistrata, by Aristophanes. A New Version by Gilbert Seldes.

New York: Limited Editions Club, 1934. Quarto. 117pp. One of 1,500 copies on French Rives and signed by Picasso. Illustrated with six original etchings in black, one of which is signed in the plate and dated in reverse, and thirty lithographs printed in sanguine after drawings. This is the only American publication with original Picasso etchings, which are "among his most important in the Classical style," according to The Artist and the Book. However experimental and avant-garde he may have been throughout his life, the Lysistrata marks a clear retrogression to the artist's earlier classicist mode, an appropriate follow-up to his acclaimed Les Métamorphoses and fitting for the classical nature of this book. The Limited Editions Club printed the volume at their own printing shop in Westport, Connecticut. The book was designed by the Club's publisher, George Macy, who had eagerly anticipated the book's production and praised Picasso's hand as "sure and confident," noting that the beauty of the etchings lay in their simplicity. A fine, bright copy in boards covered with patterned paper in three colors from drawings by Picasso. Wrapped in the original glassine, which is still crisp overall, save for slight edgewear. Housed in a chemise of blue boards and patterned paper, which is sunned to the spine, and the original slipcase, which shows some wear to the corners and has a slight split starting to one corner. (The Artist and The Book 226; Cramer 24; LEC 57).

D'Aci i d'Allà [1934 Christmas Issue], Containing Figures davant el mar

1st Edition Llibreria, Catalonia: np, 1934. FIRST EDITION, with the EXTREMELY RARE AND SOUGHT-AFTER POCHOIR BY MIRÓ (From Here and There: Figures by the Sea); one of only five pochoirs created in his career. "After their first encounter, Miró and [the architect] Sert continued to meet often through the group of painters, sculptors, and art critics of the cultural group known as ADLAN (1932-1936)." Through the joint efforts of ADLAN and GATCPAC, a group of architects active from 1930 to 1936, came "the most representative publication of that period: a special issue of the magazine D'Aci i d'Allà focusing on twentieth-century art--the 1934 Christmas issue--directly supervised by Joan Prats and Josep Lluís Sert and with the participation of Joan Miró, in the first instance of a collaboration between the artist and the architect ... The result of this joint effort was far more than a mere revision of contemporary visual arts; it became a guidebook to the new trends and to the avant-garde aesthetic, providing information both about the art world and about the latest advances in the fields of housing and construction. Joan Miró was the main protagonist of the issue of D'Aci i d'Allà directed by Sert, once again being praised as a contemporary primitive. In designing the cover and the famous pochoir specifically created for this issue, Miró managed to convey the greatest expressive force with minimal resources, using only red, yellow, and black against the white paper background" (Vecchierini, 46-48).The most sought-after issue of this Spanish magazine, which contains an hors texte colour pochoir plate by Joan Miró (Figures davant el mar), printed in yellow, red, and black. There are also texts by C. Soldevila, L. Fernández, C. Zervos, J. L. Sert, J.V. Foix, C. Sindreu, M.A. Cassanyes, A. Jakovsky, and S. Gasch. Cramer 11.Barcelona: Llibreria Catalonia, 1934. Size: 330 x 280 mm (approx. 13 x 11 inches). Spiral bound in original illustrated wrappers. With original subscription form laid in. Very light wear to wrappers. Pochoir pristine. A remarkably well-preserved copy of a notoriously rare and fragile work. Very Good.

        Express To Hollywood

London: Jarrolds, 1934. First edition. Very good or better in blue cloth boards, with the spine showing light toning. Minor edge wear and rubbing to the boards, a 1/16 inch split to the headband at spine, previous owners rather intrusive bookplate to the front free endpaper, but overall an entirely presentable, sturdy and appealing copy, with the great bonus of McLaglen's inscription and signature on the title page. Lacking the dust jacket. McLaglen was of course an enduring presence in the films of John Ford and made an indelible, eternal impression in his Oscar-winning turn as Gypo Nolan in Ford's 'The Informer.' A legendarily elusive title, but scarcer by an order of magnitude when signed.

Two page personal letter to his son from Little America [with] two other items

Very good condition. Important and personal typed letter from Thomas Charles Poulter, second in command on the Second Byrd Antarctic expedition to the South Pole with Richard E. Byrd, 1934-1936, from Little America, Antarctica. Poulter (1897 - 1978) was credited by Byrd with saving his life when he nearly succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. In his honor Byrd named a glacier after Poulter. This is a two page very personal letter to Poulter's son, full of details of the expedition, and mailed from the expedition during its first 6 months. Poutler's wife was staying in Little America over the winter, and was the only woman there: "mother says she would like to stay here all summer and watch the penguins -- they are so polite -- they actually bow to each other when they meet". Of the rescue of Byrd, Poulter writes, "It was an awful trip - blizzards, crevases (sic). Snow had almost covered the marker flags placed there by the Admiral on his trip down. We found him pretty well exhausted but he said: "Come in Boys, I have some hot soup for you". Poulter describes the cow barn as being buried under the snow: "The stock, Mr. Bull and his harem of three cows are doing nicely and "Oh, Boy - don't that fresh milk taste good"? He also describes the "Boys" regular routine during the expedition, using the radio to stay in touch with the world, playing mouth organs & banjos and singing for radio audiences, and treating Mother (Mrs. Poulter) like a "Queen among men". The letter is addressed "Dear Son" and typed on Masonic letterhead, the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of New Jersey, with the Salem, NJ (the family home) struck out with typed XX's and "Little America, South Pole, Anartica (sic), August 23, 1934" typed in. Signed by hand, "Dad & Mother". Sheet size, 8 1/2 x 11". The typed letter is accompanied by a separate manuscript note, dated October 1933, which reads, rather ominously, "Dear Son, Greetings from the South Pole. I hope I am alive till thee gets this. Love, Dad". 5 1/2 x 3". Together with an official color souvenir map of the expedition, 'Authorized Map of the Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition' with a pictorial title cartouche with portrait of Byrd. A promotional piece by General Foods, copyright 1934. Included is a real picture post card of the Antarctic Snow Cruiser (a.k.a. "Penguin 1"), which Poulter later developed and which was to be used in Antarctica. Postcard by Fralick Photo, No. B6, 508 Faurot Bldg, Lima, Ohio. The "Penguin I" looks very futuristic indeed, tremendously elongated & low, with huge tires, which have not succeeded in getting it out of the creek. The pencilled inscription dates this as "October 28, 1939, vehicle for Byrd's U.S. Antarctic Service Expedition, 1939-41"

        Contes et Nouvelles en Vers.

Paris: Daniel Jacomet, [1934] - Two volumes, folio. Finely bound in contemporary full olive morocco, spines gilt-ruled in compartments with raised bands and titles direct, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Spines sunned, excellent condition. 64 sepia drawings facsimile plates, and 57 floral designs in the text, as well as coloured borders throughout and the manuscript reproduced in facsimile. First edition thus, one of 190 privately produced and distributed facsimile copies by Daniel Jacomet of a unique manuscript copy of the Contes de La Fontaine illustrated by Fragonard. The library records (OCLC records only 6 copies held in institutions worldwide) give 1934 as the date of printing. The illustrations were done by Fragonard in about 1780 during the artist's journey to Italy with M. Bergeret, a "Fermier General". The first draft was a series of 44 pencil drawings, now in the Morgan Library. The final illustrations, consisting of a series of 64 magnificent sepia drawings and 57 floral designs, were given to Bergeret and inserted by him into a beautiful manuscript of the Contes de La Fontaine. This unique copy, after passing through many hands (the second blank of the first volume bears, in facsimile, manuscript evidence of this provenance history), finally came into the possession of M. Henry Beraldi (1849-1931) the French bibliophile and publisher. This copy, in volume one, bears an example of Beraldi's ex-libris, which we suspect was present in all copies. On his death the manuscript was purchased by the Ville de Paris. In order to defray the cost of this purchase, the Ville de Paris commissioned Daniel Jacomet, the finest producer of art facsimiles then working, to reproduce the 190 copies in facsimile. The entire edition was sold to individual subscribers and museums, and never offered for public sale. Each volume bears a typewritten leaf attesting to the background history of this book's production. This copy comes from the library, though unmarked as such, of Patrick Macleod, who was the director of the Trianon Press (for whom Jacomet also worked), which operated from France and is most famous for its fine colour facsimiles of the original books produced by William Blake.
