FIRST EDITION AND A RARE SET OF WHAT IS LARGELY CONSIDERED THE MAGNUM OPUS OF THE PRESS. FREE VISTAS is a treasure trove of libertarian philosophy, literature, and history, with illustrations by prominent artists. The Oriole Press was a one-man operation. Ishill was typographer, printer, compositor, pressman, and sole proprietor. Apart from his wife's editorial assistance, he performed all the labors by himself, without outside help, from the most complex and demanding to the simplest of mechanical details. Ishill was always filled with a passion to create, and he derived incalculable pleasure from his work. All of his labors were performed with the same meticulous care. These are the only two issues produced of what Ishill had hoped would be an annual volume, and these were printed a full four years apart. The contents, according to Ishill, give a clear idea of how he interpreted "anarchism and its esthetic value so neglected even by the most sincere precursors of this ideal." Among the contributors are: Rabindranath Tagore, Holbrook Jackson, Witter Bynner, Elie Reclus, Jacques Mesnil, Emma Goldman, Octave Mirbeau, Havelock Ellis, Romain Rolland, R. Austin Freeman, Stefan Zweig, and a number of other important writers. Also included are excerpts from Tolstoy, Shaw, Mencken, Thoreau,Ruskin, Jefferson, Emerson, etc., etc., etc.

        Marlborough His Life and Times.

London: George G. Harrap & Company, 1933-38. First editions of each volume. Octavo, 4 volumes, original cloth, with hundreds of maps and plans (many folding), plates and document facsimiles, top edge gilt. Fine in the original dust jackets which are in very good to near fine condition. John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough (1644-1722), was one of the greatest military commanders and statesmen in the history of England. Victorious in the Battles of Blenheim, Ramillies, and countless other campaigns, Marlborough, whose political intrigues were almost as legendary as his military skill, never fought a battle he didn't win. Although he helped James II crush the rebellion of the Duke of Monmouth, Marlborough later supported William of Orange against James II in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and brilliantly managed England's diplomatic triumphs during the War of the Spanish Succession. "The greatest historical work written in our century, an inexhaustible mine of political wisdom and understanding, which should be required reading for every student of political science." - Leo Strauss, University of Chicago "Rarely in the history of historical writing have author and subject seemed so made for each other" (Henry Steele Commager).

[ARCHITECTURAL EVOLUTION OF THE 1920s] Puti arkhitekturnoi mysli. 1917-1932 [i.e. Ways of Architectural Thought. 1917-1932]

Moscow: Izogiz, 1933. 144 pp.: ill., 2 ill. 13x10 cm. In original printed wrappers. Few pieces of the wrapper missing, covers detached from the block, loose, blue ink stain in the upper corner of a few pages, soiling of the wrappers, a few pencil markings in the text. Clean internally, a good copy. Very rare. From the series «Library of the 'Art' Magazine» edited by O.M. Beskin. This book is a brilliant richly illustrated compilation on 1920-30s art and architecture with a focus on constructivism. With a folding plate of a final design The Palace of the Soviets (this is one of the first images accessible to the public). Roman Khiger (1901-1985) was a Soviet architecture critic, architect and engineer, one of the ideologists of constructivism. In 1930s he was one of the leading architecture critics in USSR. In 1928 he on his own initiative wrote an article «On the Matter of Constructivism Ideology in Modern Architecture» and brought it to the well-known magazine 'Sovremennaia Arkhitektura' (i.e. Modern Architecture). In that article he enunciated principles of constructivism and gave harsh response to its critics. The article was published and Khiger was hired and later became a deputy to Vesnin and Ginsburg on the editorial board. He was the first to professionally characterize and describe Melnikov and Golosov's art, remarkable architects of 1920s constructivism whose names were little known until 1980s. This edition is divided into sections: period of romanticism and symbolism, formalism, constructivism and functionalism, neoclassicism and eclecticism, proletarian architecture, problems and perspectives of a near future. With almost 30 black and white architecture designs and photos. Among them are designs by Vesnin brothers, Golosov, Shchuko, Shchusev, Fomin, Golosov, Leonidov, and some other distinguished architects.

        Mann mit Taube.

Original Radierung. 38 x 28 cm. Blattgröße. Helmut Leherbauer (* 14. Februar 1933 in Wien † 28. A.P. Marlborough: His Life and Times, Volume I

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1933. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of the first volume of Churchill's Marlborough, the most elusive volume to filling a first printing set. Winston Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. This decade saw Churchill pass into his sixties with his own future as uncertain as that of his nation. It is perhaps not incidental that Churchill's great work of the 1930s was about a great ancestor. Churchill may have wondered more than once if the life history he was writing might ultimately eclipse his own. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." Two months after Volume I was published, on 12 December 1933, T.E. Lawrence wrote to Churchill: “I finished it only yesterday. I wish I had not… The skeleton of the book is so good. Its parts balance and the main stream flows… Marlborough has the big scene-painting, the informed pictures of men, the sober comment on political method, the humour, irony and understanding of your normal writing: but beyond that it shows more discipline and strength: and great dignity. It is history, solemn and decorative.” The first edition of Marlborough was originally issued in four volumes and was very well received - both critically and aesthetically. The first edition is physically impressive, bound in plum cloth with beveled edges, the Marlborough coat of arms in gilt on the front cover, a gilt text block top edge, and a profusion of illustrations, maps, and plans. Unfortunately, the plum cloth binding in Volumes I-III proved highly susceptible to sun fading. (A different, more fade-resistant dye was used in Volume IV.) Without the dust jackets, Volumes I-III are nearly always spine faded. Here is the first edition, first printing of Volume I, a very good copy in a very good dust jacket. This first volume covers Marlborough's story up to the 1702 death of William III. It is a substantial 612 pages with 35 illustrations, 14 maps and plans, and 8 document facsimiles. The binding is square and tight with sharp corners, bright gilt, and only a hint of sunning to the extreme spine ends where a hint of sun snuck past the edges of the dust jacket. The contents are crisp and bright with no previous ownership marks. Faint differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms what the binding already testifies - that this copy has spent life jacketed. Spotting appears confined to the fore and bottom edges. The dust jacket is the correct - and increasingly elusive - first printing, confirmed by an unclipped front flap that retains the original price with no telltale mention of "2nd Impression" or "3rd Impression". Color is excellent, with almost no toning of the dove gray spine color. The jacket shows only fractional chipping at the spine ends and corners, a 4 cm closed tear to the bottom edge of the front panel, some wear to the hinges, and light soiling.         Sélection Chronique de la Vie Artistique: Cahier 14

Paris: Editions Selection Anvers, 1933. A wonderful association copy signed by Kandinsky linking Australian modernist designers with the bohemian world of Paris between the wars. Celebrating of the life and work of the great modernist innovator, Wassily Kandinsky, this album is generously illustrated with a selection of the great artist's works, including earlier pieces dating back to 1910. Significantly, Kandinsky gifted this copy to Australian designer, Douglas Glass and inscribed the title page accordingly. The inscription is fully signed 'Kandinsky' and dated 28 December 1935. Glass later gifted the album to his colleague and fellow designer, Gordon Andrews in 1948. Andrews was one of the pre-eminent Australian graphic designers of his generation - best known for designing the first decimal currency notes in 1966 - and the inscription from Glass follows that of Kandinsky's on the title page. A wonderfully evocative photograph of Glass is also loosely inserted into the book. This Kandinsky album is a tangible and tantalising link between a leading Australian designer and one of the great modernist artists of the era. Small quarto, bound in original wrappers, 96 pages (including 15 glossy photo plates), plus 4 pages of publisher's listings; spine expertly repaired, wrappers mildly chipped and scuffed, with a light crease, in very good condition.

        FRA LUCA DE PACIOLI.

NY: The Grolier Club, 1933. 8 1/4 x 12 1/4. Half-title, frontis by Emery Walker, vii, (2), 105, (1) pages. Title within white-on-red strapwork border. Red ornaments & strapwork initials. Illustrated throughout with diagrams of Roman letters, with tissue guards. Vellum-backed pattern paper boards by W. H. Smith, in cloth tray case (lightly faded) with leather spine label. A large bookplate has been neatly removed from the pastedown, leaving a shadow; the bookplate of Frances & Frank Ross. is on rear pastedown. A previous owner has pencilled a brief bibliographical note in the bibliography section. A fine copy. One of 390 copies designed by Bruce Rogers, with an essay by Stanley Morison, who has initialed the preface. Printed in Centaur type on handmade paper at the Cambridge Univ. Press. Frederic Goudy cut some special types for the book. Emery Walker engraved the plates of Pacioli's letters. Walter Lewis and Brooke Crutchley "oversaw" the printing at Cambridge, but it was very much Rogers' project. In fact, "Mr Lewis had wisely timed his holiday to coincide with this most critical stage of production." Crutchley notes "the ink had too much gloss in it, or was too blue or too black.... He (BR) has been spending the morning painting over the black parts of the printed sheets to get rid of the gloss...The machine was standing all yesterday because the red ink wasn't right...he went to London to supervise the mixing of a new supply...a week later the ink had not dried." John Dreyfus has noted there is no other BR book 'in which format, paper, inks and presswork were in such impeccable harmony.' Blumenthal has called the title page 'a page of true grandeur...unique in the whole history of the printed word.' "BR30." A Century for the Century 34.

Volumes II-IV show only a trivial hint of spotting confined to the mildly age-toned fore and bottom edges. We find no previous ownership marks other than the author's inscription. The set is housed in a brown cloth slipcase. Regarded among the great artists of his generation, Paul Lucien Maze (1887-1979) “learned the rudiments of painting from family friends that included Renoir, Monet, Dufy and Pissarro.” Though born in La Havre, Maze had “a lifelong love affair with all things English.” During the First World War Maze was wounded several times and highly decorated (awarded the DCM, MM and Bar, Legion d'Honneur, and Croix de Guerre). Maze met Churchill on the Western Front in 1916, where Churchill was serving as a Lieutenant Colonel during his political exile following the Dardanelles disaster. Churchill had only recently discovered painting, the passion Maze would encourage and guide as both friend and mentor for the rest of Churchill's life. Churchill's official Biographer called Maze “One of Churchill's closest French friends.” (Gilbert, VI, p.856) The friendship transcended painting, evidenced by shared moments, perspective, and correspondence. In between writing Marlborough, his most substantial published work of his 1930's “wilderness years”, Churchill wrote a Foreword for Maze's First World War memoir (A Frenchman in Khaki, 1934). In 1939, as war approached, Churchill also wrote a Foreword to the catalogue for his friend's first New York exhibition (“He is no toiling seeker… but a vivid and powerful interpreter to us of the forces and harmony of Nature.”) Later that same year, on 20 August, Churchill was painting beside Maze when he “suddenly turned” to his friend and said: “This is the last picture we shall paint in peace for a very long time.” Maze recorded: “What amazed me was his concentration over his painting. No one but he could have understood more what the possibility of war meant, and how ill prepared we were. As he worked, he would now and then make statements as to the relative strengths of the German Army or the French Army… Then his jaw would clench his large cigar, and I felt the determination of his will. ‘Ah' he would say, ‘with it all, we shall have him.'” Maze recorded that Churchill was depressed as he left: “I had written a letter to him ‘only to read when he was over the Channel': ‘Don't worry Winston you know that you will be Prime Minister and lead us to victory…'” (Gilbert, V, p.1103) On 1 September Nazi Germany invaded Poland returning Churchill to the Admiralty and to war. In May 1940 Churchill became Prime Minister. The next month, Maze “managed to escape through Bordeaux… bringing with him a convoy of orphans.” Maze served in the Hampshire Home Guard before serving as an RAF staff officer. (Gilbert, VI, p.857) Post-war, Maze's friendship with Churchill continued, as did the twining of their respective paths. Churchill was Queen Elizabeth II's first Prime Minister, Maze the Official Painter of her Coronation. Maze was a frequent Chartwell guest, the two painting together into Churchill's final years.
