Baalde; Utrecht, J. van Schoonhoven & comp., 1774. 4to. Set in roman type with incidental Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac and 1 word in Coptic. Near-contemporary tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine.

Hans Bernhard Merian's French translation of Michaelis's Fragen an eine Gesellschaft gelehrter Männer (1762), prepared during the early stages of Carsten Niebuhr's Danish expedition to the Middle East. It is the first edition in any language to be printed in the Netherlands. Johann David Michaelis, a famed German Orientalist and theologian, was one of the scholars who prompted the important Danish expedition to Egypt, Arabia and Syria (1761-1767), led by Carsten Niebuhr. Michaelis hoped to investigate the relationship of the southern Arabic dialects to Hebrew, and to verify obscure botanical and zoological information in the Bible. For this purpose he composed the present 100 "questions". It includes the instructions for the expedition by Frederick V of Denmark, a 35-page account of Yemen and an extract of Carsten Niebuhr's account of Arabia (not included in the first French edition of 1763). Back of first free endleaf with traces of removed bookseller's(?) ticket. With an occasional small rust spot, but otherwise in very good condition and only slightly trimmed, leaving large margins. Binding with minor suface damage and wear at the hinges and extremities, but otherwise also very good. Important preparatory studies concerning Egypt, Arabia and Syria, written and first published during the early stages of a voyage.

Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, The [First Issue]

New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1933. First Edition, as stated. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine+. First Issue (silver-blue cloth), one of 5400 copies ("no known breakdown between the [three] various issues"-Wilson). 8vo: [8],310pp, with frontispiece and 15 further photographs. Publisher's silver-blue cloth, spine and upper cover stamped gilt, top edge stained silver-gray; in an unglazed pictorial dust jacket (price-clipped) printed in black and orange, featuring a photo by Man Ray (which is repeated as the frontispiece). A Fine, unread copy, square, tight and unmarked, in a better than Near Fine jacket with brief edge wear, slight toning to spine, few stray spots on back panel. Haas & Gallup XXI. Wilson A20a. From May to August 1933, several chapters of The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas appeared in the Atlantic Monthly. The book was not available until August, and in the United States the first printing sold out by August 22, nine days before the official publication date. At the age of 59, Stein had become a popular success. As she explained in Everybody's Autobiography (1937): "Well anyway it was a beautiful autumn in Bilignin and in six weeks I wrote The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and it was published and it became a best seller . . . I bought myself a new eight-cylinder Ford car and the most expensive coat make to order by Hermes . . . I had never made any money before in my life and I was most excited. "Gertrude Stein's life-long companion, Alice B. Toklas, is the narrator of this book written by Stein, which describes their life together in Paris from Alice's point of view. Thus, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas is not, in fact, Alice B. Toklas's autobiography; instead it is Gertrude Stein's idea of what such a book might look like. . . . [It] can also be described as a selective history of artistic and literary developments in Paris in the 1910s and 1920s, [with] witty stories of how Stein and her brother Leo began to collect early paintings by Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso . . . first-hand accounts of numerous social gatherings, including the famous banquet for Rousseau given by Picasso and his wife . . . [and, in] one frequently cited story, Alice explain[ing] that, at a dinner party with many of the well know artists in Paris at the time, 'After a while I murmured to Picasso that I liked his portrait of Gertrude Stein. Yes, he said, everybody says that she does not look like it but that does not make any difference, she will, he said.' . . .         The Savoy Cocktail Book. Being in the main a complete compendium of the Cocktails, Rickeys, Daisies, Slings, Shrubs, Smashes, Fizzes, Juleps, Cobblers, Fixes, and other Drinks, known and vastly appreciated in this year of grace 1930, with sundry notes of amusement and interest concerning them, together with subtle Observations upon Wine and their special occasions. Being in the particular an elucidation of the Manners and Customs of people of quality in a period of some equality. [Signed]

London: Constable, 1933. Early Reprint. Hardcover. Fine. Second Printing of the Second Edition, new and enlarged (pp. 282-86 list "New and Additional Cocktails"), of this classic mixology guide. Signed by Craddock, in very elegant script, on copyright page: "Here's How! / Harry Craddock / December 10, 1934." 8vo: 287,[1]pp. Publisher's finely woven tangerine cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in black, decorative end papers; wanting the dust jacket. Presented in two parts: Cocktails and Wines with an introduction by "Colette." A superlative example, square, tightly bound, internally fresh and bright, virtually pristine, with the author's scarce autograph. First published in 1930, three years before this new and enlarged edition (complete with all of Gilbert Rumbold's stylish color illustrations from the first edition). A compendium featuring some 750 of Craddock's popular classics, including the famous Corpse Reviver #2, which he invented, and the Dry Martini, which he popularized. Craddock decamped to London's Savoy Hotel after Prohibition put a crimp on his career in the United States. His bar book was one of the first to not only list drink recipes but also to provide a wine guide. (Craddock contended every good bartender possessed a solid wine knowledge.) It is a fascinating record of the cocktails that set London alight in the years between the Wars. The legendary Savoy opened in 1889; César Ritz was its first manager, and Auguste Escoffier created its fine cuisine. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Glibson. The Great Blabit of Banking & Financial Boobery.

Farrar & Rinehart, New York 1933 - Handsomely bound in finely woven blue cloth stamped brightly in gold on the front boards and the spine. Very clean and tight throughout. Printed on heavy stock, clean thick white paper. Hinges are very tight. Red topstaining. In a very good minus dustjacket with the original price of $2.50 at the top of the inside front flap. Light edge-wear and chipping; with a fingernail-sized chip at the bottom of the spine and some light bluish-green staining along the left edges and the botom of the rear panel; this staining or bleeding appears to have come from another book which was up against the dustjacket. The front inside flap has a few light vertical creases. With the striking front panel printed in gold with a colorful portrait of Glibson. An attractive copy of this early banking exposé which has become scarce in dustjacket. "Meet Mr. Glibson! Glibson is a boomtime banker, who's glided through the Depression and still lives high, wide and handsome. He's a choice flower plucked from our weedy industrial garden. You've got a Glibson in your town. We've got a Glibson in our town. There's really nothing crooked about Glibson. His great fault is that he knows the platitudes and uses them. This is the story of how he became the great Blabit of banking. It is the most withering portrayal of financial boobery in high places that has ever appeared in print. It is savage, ruthless, funny, wise, and courageous.Tichenor writes with the vigor and frankness of Sinclair Lewis." Shuermann; A vocabulary and outlines of the grammatical structure of the Murray River languages by M. Moorhouse; loosely inserted are numerous letters addressed to Johnson relating to this book, including two from the editor Thomas Parkhouse; one from Johnson's brother Howard, who discusses an Aboriginal vocabulary he compiled at Marion Bay and had subsequently given to Basedow ('... personally, I loathe niggers & only jotted down the words from time to time to kill the long evenings at Marion Bay'); one from E. Teichelmann in Hokitika, New Zealand, providing information about his father, C.G. Teichelmann; a biographical sketch of C.G. Teichelmann expressly written and typed for Johnson by Professor A. Lodewyckx, University of Melbourne; a letter from F.E. Teichelmann printed from a family negative, mention of her grandmother's diary from the 1840s, and a 2 pp transcription of an obituary for Teichelmann (1888); and a letter from University of Melbourne anatomist and anthropologist Frederic Wood Jones (1879-1954), gratefully acknowledging receipt of an Aboriginal skull and bones which Johnson has sent him; a few contemporary newspaper clippings relating to the book's subject matter which have also been pasted-in on blank pages by Johnson; fine and important association copies of a scarce work. Dr. E. Angas Johnson was a distinguished Adelaide medical practitioner, and great-grandson of George Fife Angas. He assembled an important collection of Aboriginal artefacts and historical curios relating to South Australia which were given to various institutions prior to his death.

Don Herold published "Tribune Syndicate" pen and ink illustration art

n.p., n.d.. 13.5" x 10.5". "Illustration original art. Pen and Ink on bristol board, 13.5"" x 10.5"". Soft soiling / handling marks, with small stain mid art and surface abrasion / shearing to the board around the art (although the art seems to have skirted the damage). Verso with publishers identification notes of "" ... Wanted 9:30 am Monday / Tribune Syndicate."" Signed by Don Herold lower left ""Don Herold"".A spectacular inked cartoon most likely published in a Tribune Syndication. This syndication was originally a part of the Chicago Tribune, who launched the Tribune Media Services in 1933.The art depicts a husband and wife in a classic portrayal of the wife laboring over washing dishes and the husband off in dream land, pondering. The caption states:He: ""I'm going to send aunt Maggie Christmas telegram No 12. It's a sweet sentiment""She: ""See if there's a telegram form you can send me to say you'll be glad to help with these dinner dishes""Maybe best appreciated by a member of the female persuasion; however, the piece is nicely detailed and vibrantly inked. Although unclear which publication week this was ultimately included in, Herold was a regular contributor to several magazines and this piece depicts Tribune Syndicate note on the verso. In addition, Herold also submitted satirical art to numerous other national magazines. Signed by Herold lower left, this large spectacular piece is in great condition and would display beautifully framed."
