Brigitte Reimann (* 21. Juli 1933 in Burg - + 20.

One of the finest modern editions of the great Restoration poet.

The Empty Quarter being a description of the Great South Desert of Arabia known as Rub'al Khali.

London, Constable & Company Ltd , 1933. 8vo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in red; pp. xxiv, 433; illustrations from photographs, 3 folding maps; binding a little marked, large folding map with a few old repairs, internally a very good copy, from Harrods' circulating library (blind-stamp inside rear cover). First edition, in the secondary binding, bu to the nrown cloth more commonly found. Philby's account of his journeys across the so-called 'Empty Quarter', the desert region at the heart of the Arabian peninsular, has become a classic of the travel literature. Though not in fact the first to cross the Rub'al Khali - Bertram Thomas had beaten him to that in 1931 - Philby undertook the more arduous traverse and, in Wilfrid Thesiger's opinion, his should be regarded 'as the greater of the two'.

        Light in August. A novel.

Chatto & Windus, London, 1933. The first UK edition. 8vo. 480pp. Red cloth lettered in gold at spine and with the publisher's red top edge stain. Edges lightly spotted. A small area of discolouration to the base of the upper board, and a little fading to the cloth at the head and base of the backstrip where the dust wrapper is defective. A narrow strip of light partial browning to endpapers and a hint of very light spotting to one or two leaf margins. A small bump to the lower corner of the rear board impacts the corners of the last two or three leaves. A nice crisp copy in a somewhat distressed example of the uncommon Walter Goetz-designed dust wrapper, non-price-clipped but a little spotted, tanned at spine panel, chafed and with several short tears and half a dozen areas of edge loss, primarily to the spine ends and upper edge. This copy from the library of noted man of letters Bonamy Dobrée, with his inked signature to the front free endpaper, and also a tiny Poetry Bookshop plate to the base of the front pastedown. The author's seventh novel, a Southern Gothic classic, originally published in the US in 1932 in a print run of 11,000 copies, with this significantly more uncommon English edition appearing a year later in a print run of 2,500 copies.. 1st Edition.         Pourquoi la Guerre?

Institut International de Coopération Intellectuelle 1933 - This is #281 of a limited printing of 3000 copies of Pourquoi la Guerre? (62 numbered pages), published by the Institut International de Coopération Intellectuelle in March, 1933. This is one of the french language copies of this first edition, which was published in French, English and German, of the 1932 correspondence between Albert Einstein (July) and Sigmund Freud (September) regarding the origins and nature of wars. Issued weeks after the ascension to power of the Nazi regime, with Hitler at its head, this was immediately banned in Germany, with almost all the German-language copies burned by the Nazis. The cover (app. 6.5" x 9") has sunning to its borders, shallow wear to the ends of the more notably sunned spine, and pencil notations to the top of the back cover. There are no deep tears or prominent stains. The lettering and art are unfaded and legible. The inside is very good, with no stamps or other attachments, no writing or notations. There are a few cracked gutters, but no loose and no missing pages. There is border sunning, which is mostly light, but no other notable stains. There are no page tears and few creases, none of which are significant. The above photos, of this copy, are accurate reflections its conditions. This would be sent internationally via expedited insured delivery, with a charge of $100. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Design for Living.

1933 - First edition. 8vo., cloth. New York, Doubleday, Doran and Company. Inscribed in pencil on the front free endpaper 'For Cecil from Noël. 1933', further inscribed in pencil (first in Lynn Fontanne's hand) 'For Cecil - From Lynn -(then in Lunt's hand) Alfred Lunt', the word Lunt overwritten 'Otto', Lunt's character in the play, which premiered on Broadway in 1933, with Coward, Lunt, and Fontanne in the starring roles. The play was written with Lunt and Fontanne in mind, Coward having first met the couple in 1921, a long friendship ensuing. The possibility exists that the inscriptions are to Cecil Beaton, long time friend of all three, and designer of the sets and costumes for Coward's 'Quadrille'. He was in New York in 1933, vide a photograph of Beaton in fancy dress at the Opera Ball in April 1933. All three actors were also photographed often by Beaton. Spine faded, some browning and light foxing to the endpapers, a very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Ukrainsko-Moskovska Viina 1920 roku v dokumentakh.

      - Warsaw, Ukrainian Scientific Instiute, 1933. Large 8vo. Original printed wrappers; pp. [4], iii, 401, [6, contents and errata], 10 maps in three colours on five leaves in rear pocket; wrappers with frayed margins due to oversize, offsetting from wrappers to adjacent leaves, entirely uncut. Very rare first edition of 792 Ukrainian military documents, orders, resumes, and communications issued during the Kiev Offensive of the joint Polish and Ukrainian forces against the Red Army, the main goal of which was the formation of an independent Ukraine. The main players were Symon Petlura, the leader of the Ukrainain People's Republic, and Pavlo Shandruk, and to a lesser degree, but with a lasting impact on Anarchist movements and tactics, Nestor Makhno. Unfortunately this extremely rare volume, published by Ukrainians in Polish exile, is of sad actuality. - Fully indexed, good maps, important. COPAC locates a single copy, in the British Library. Autographed Photo of Memory Lane Review includinh W. C. Handy and Rosamond Johnson

ca. 1933 - Memory Lane, including W. C. Handy and Rosamund Johnson, Sepia-toned, approximately 8X10 photograph of 14 members of the Memory Lane Review signed by all 14, ca. 1933,( although the signatures of Harry Brooks and Tom Harris on the right side may be in the same hand.) The Memory Lane Review, started in the early 30's by Joe Laurie, was intended to include "notable favorites from a half century ago," according to an article in the March 5, 1934 edition of the Wilkes Barre Times Leader. Each performer brought to the stage "something of the past that endeared the artist to the followers of things theatrical back in the good old days of merriment."The photograph includes the following:Joe Laurie - Founder of the Memory Lane Review. Laurie had performed as a comedian on the Vaudeville circuit, on Broadway and on radio. He authored two books Show Biz: from Vaude to Video and Vaudeville: From the Honky Tonks to the Palace. The latter book mentions Memory Lane.Rosamund Johnson - Brother of James Weldon Johnson, Rosamund Johnson is most remembered for composing the music for his brother's lyric, "Lift Every Voice and Sing," known as the Negro National Anthem.         Pojecie prawdy w jezykach nauk dedukcyjnych. [The Concept of Truth in Formalized Language.]

Nakladem Towarzystwa Naukowego Warszawskiego z Zasilku Ministerstwa wyznan Religijnych i Oswiecenia Publicznego, Warszawa 1933 - First edition. In publisher's printed wrappers. VII, (1), (1)-116, (2) p. Scarce first edition of Tarski's monograph on the concept of truth in formalized languages. "In his classic monograph on the concept of truth [.], Tarski will present a method for constructing definitions of truth for classical quantificational formal languages. When one succeeds in applying this method to a particular formal language, the end result will be the construction of a predicate in a metalanguage for that language whose essential properties will be that it will be constructed out of non-suspicious mathematical vocabulary and that it will be intuitively satisfied precisely by the intuitively true sentences of the object language. At the same time, Tarski shows how, in terms of the defined notion of truth, one can give intuitively adequate definitions of the semantical notions of definability and denotation, and he indicates how it is possible to define the notion of truth in a structure in a way analogous to the one used to define truth. That allows him to conclude that the acceptability and rigor of the "recent methodological studies" (of Löwenheim, Skolem, Gödel and Tarski himself, among others), have been vindicated [.]." (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) Alfred Tarski (1901-1983) "widely considered as one of the greatest logicians of the twentieth century (often regarded as second only to Gödel), and thus as one of the greatest logicians of all time. Among philosophers he is especially known for his mathematical characterizations of the concepts of truth and logical consequence for sentences of classical formalized languages, and to a lesser extent for his mathematical characterization of the concept of a logical constant for expressions of those same languages." (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Panels sunned. Front panel with two stains. Otherwise clean. In fine condition. In publisher's printed wrappers [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

NUMBER 6 OF 100 SETS SIGNED BY WALL and with his etcher's slip indicating that he produced the book in Coral Gables, Florida. Weber, Following Bernhardt Wall 1872-1956, pages 42-43. Bernhardt Wall was born in Buffalo, New York on Dec. 30, 1872. He studied at the Buffalo Art Student's League then moved on to study in New York under Henry Reuterdahl and also apprenticed under William Auerbach-Levy. Wall began a career as a lithographic illustrator in 1889 working primarily as a commercial artist in New York and Buffalo. He soon became known as the "Postcard King" and designed over 5,000 comic cards. The year1915 marked a defining point in Wall's artistic career. Wall visited Colorado, Nevada and California making etchings of Indians, cowboys and major cities which were later published in a portfolio entitled, "Under Western Skies." These proved to be very successful and the artist shortly thereafter moved to California permanently. Wall continued to produce many fine etchings of the American West and by 1930 had also become a much respected historian of the region. Bernhardt Wall was unique in that he not only drew the etchings for his books, but he also printed and bound them. His books are in libraries and universities around the world including the British Museum, Library of Congress, the libraries of Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Brown Universities. His works were also in the private collections of J. P. Morgan, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Henry C. Frick and Dr. N.C. Mathewson. Wall etched three sitting presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Taft, and Henry Coolidge. Other prominent individuals etched by Wall include Sam Houston, Mark Twain, Thomas A. Edison, Abraham Lincoln, and Andrew Jackson. Artist and historian, Bernhardt Wall (1872-1956) was a pioneer etcher and producer of fine press books who treated a vast array of subjects, including Texas and the Southwest. Historians of fine press printing have compared him to William Blake. This collection of Wall's scrapbooks, publications, and correspondence was built by collector Natalie Williams of Marshall, Texas.
