        Ukrainsko-Moskovska Viina 1920 roku v dokumentakh.

Warsaw, Ukrainian Scientific Instiute, 1933. Large 8vo. Original printed wrappers; pp. [4], iii, 401, [6, contents and errata], 10 maps in three colours on five leaves in rear pocket; wrappers with frayed margins due to oversize, offsetting from wrappers to adjacent leaves, entirely uncut. Very rare first edition of 792 Ukrainian military documents, orders, resumes, and communications issued during the Kiev Offensive of the joint Polish and Ukrainian forces against the Red Army, the main goal of which was the formation of an independent Ukraine. The main players were Symon Petlura, the leader of the Ukrainain People's Republic, and Pavlo Shandruk, and to a lesser degree, but with a lasting impact on Anarchist movements and tactics, Nestor Makhno. Unfortunately this extremely rare volume, published by Ukrainians in Polish exile, is of sad actuality. - Fully indexed, good maps, important. COPAC locates a single copy, in the British Library.

        DARK HAZARD

Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York 1933 - First Printing, with publisher's "F-H" code on copyright page. Octavo (21.5cm); evergreen cloth, with titling and decorative elements stamped in black and orange on spine and front cover; Art-Deco patterned endpapers; dark yellow topstain; dustjacket; [viii],295pp. Faint suggestion of a forward lean, else a fresh, Fine copy. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.50), gently spine-sunned and lightly edge-worn, with several short tears, attendant creases, and small chips to extremities, and some unobtrusive rubbing to front panel; Very Good+. Attractive copy of Burnett's seventh book, a novel set in California and centered around a down-and-out gambler, his interaction with gangsters, and his love affair with dog racing - particularly with a black greyhound named Dark Hazard. Burnett became involved in dog racing for a time while writing Dark Hazard, and even owned a greyhound named War Cry. Easily the scarcest of Burnett's trade editions - particularly in dustjacket; the Book Club edition, issued in August, 1933, is ubiquitous, and frequently misidentified by booksellers and auctioneers alike. Basis for Alfred E. Green's 1934 film of the same name, starring Edward G. Robinson and Genevieve Tobin, and a 1937 B-picture titled Wine, Women, and Horses. Hubin, p.58; Baird 359.         Les Amours Pastorales de Daphnis et Chloe (With ANS from St. John Hornby)

Chelsea: The Ashendene Press, 1933. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Raverat, Gwendolen; Hewitt, Graily. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 171 p. Signed by Publisher. Limited edition of 290 copies printed on paper, unnumbered, plus 20 printed on vellum; laid in are (i) a short ANS on Shelley House letterhead, from St. John Hornby to the original owner of the book, thanking him for payment and stating "I too feel sad at the thought that this is practically my last book"; and (ii) the original order form (blank) on vellum.***ABOUT THE BOOK: Numerous versions of the story of Daphnis and Chloe have been published and the story continues to enthrall readers. This version, the final book published by the Ashendene Press (other than their own bibliography), is one of the loveliest: the woodcuts by Gwendolen Raverat, the marginal notes in red, and the initial capitals filled in by hand by Graily Hewitt all form a harmonious whole that pleases the eye and the mind. The translation of Jacques Amyot, published in 1559, was the first vernacular edition and remains widely used. Many of us are familiar with the sad tale of the first printing of this book, which had to be destroyed due to the sheets having been packed before the ink had sufficiently dried; deeming the results unworthy of the Press, Hornby ordered all but 10 specimen copies to be destroyed and the entire book re-printed.***DESCRIPTION: Original binding of green paper boards with a vellum back and vellum tips, with a gold stamp on the cover being a vignette of Daphnis and Chloe with some lambs encircled with greenery, fore- and bottom edges uncut, plain endpapers, title page in red and black, the 26 woodcut illustrations scattered throughout the text, text in French, red marginal notes throughout, blue initials and paragraph indicators, printed in Ptolemy type on Batchelor paper; quarto size (just over 10" tall), pagination: (i-iv) being the half-title and title pages, i-iv being the Editor's Preface, (1)-162, colophon page. The ANS is on a small sheet (approximately 8" by 5") headed "Shelley House / Chelsea Embankment, S.W. 3." and has a hand-written note covering the front and about a third of the back, dated 1 June 1934 and signed "C St.J Hornby"; the blank order form is printed on vellum, is approximately 7.25" by 5", printing in red and black, setting forth the prices for the copies on paper (6 guineas) and on vellum (40 guineas). The volume is lacking the original slipcase but is housed in a custom drop-back box of gold cloth with a parchment spine, gilt lettering and rules on the spine, lined with ivory paper.***CONDITION: The volume could almost be called fine, it has a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; there is some extremely minor edgewear, else fine. The ANS has two horizontal original folds, else fine; the order form has a few extremely shallow creases, else fine; and the custom box has some light offsetting from the green boards on the lining paper, else fine.***CITATION: Ashendene Press Bibliography XXXIX.***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Goblin Market

London: William Heinemann, 1933. One of 410 Copies Signed by Arthur Rackham [RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. ROSSETTI, Christina. Goblin Market. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd. [1933]. One of 410 copies signed by Arthur Rackham, this being copy No. 403. Octavo (9 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches; 228 x 146 mm.). 44, [1], [3, blank] pp. Four full-page color plates and nineteen drawings in black and white. Publisher's limp vellum, front cover decoratively lettered in gilt, pictorial end-papers in green and white, top edge gilt, others uncut. A fine copy in the original (chipped) glassine wrapper and slipcase with limitation label with matching number. Chemised in a full tan morocco slipcase. Chemise with bookplate of renowned collector Richard Manney. Goblin Market (composed in April 1859 and published in 1862) is a narrative poem by Christina Rossetti. In a letter to her publisher, Rossetti claimed that the poem, which is interpreted frequently as having features of remarkably sexual imagery, was not meant for children. However, in public Rossetti often stated that the poem was intended for children, and went on to write many children's poems. When the poem appeared in her first volume of poetry, Goblin Market and Other Poems, it was illustrated by her brother, the Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Goblin Market is about two close young sisters, Laura and Lizzie, who hear the sounds of the goblin fruit market from their house where they reside by themselves. At first they try to ignore the enticing calls of the goblin men but eventually Laura decides to go out and see what's happening. Lizzie warns her not to, but Laura is too curious. The goblin men offer her their fruit, and Laura thinks it looks tasty. She doesn't have any money, but the goblins offer to take a piece of her golden hair instead. So Laura gives up some of her hair, gorges herself on goblin fruit, and heads on home to her sister. But after eating all that goblin fruit, Laura starts to waste away. Lizzie gets worried and decides to go down to the market to see what's what. The goblin men try to tempt her the way they tempted Laura, but Lizzie stands firm. The goblin men turn violent and try to stuff fruit in Lizzie's mouth, but she squeezes her mouth shut, so they just end up getting juice all over her. Lizzie runs back to their house all covered in goblin fruit juice. Laura kisses the juice off her sister's cheeks and is miraculously, but painfully, healed. Years later, Laura and Lizzie are both wives and mothers, and they describe their experience in the goblin market to their own children as a cautionary tale about the importance of sisterly love. Latimore and Haskell, p 69; Riall, p. 179.

Newspaper headline is "Rolph Justifies Lynching. Led Hanging, Boy Boasts" and includes many large photographs of the lynch mob; newspaper is paginated A-D, 2-12, 15-30, measures 21 1/2" tall by 17" wide, front page is a pale pink with black lettering, interior leaves are toned newsprint with one interior leaf being pale pink; b&w, real photo postcard depicts Thurmond, partially clothed, and Holmes, unclothed, hung from a tree with onlookers nearby and measures 3 1/2" tall by 5 1/2" wide. The gruesome San Jose lynching stemmed from the kidnapping and murder of Brooke Hart, the son of a local department store owner. Thomas Thurmond and John Holmes confessed to the kidnapping and murder and threats of lynching the two men began at once. As a lynch mob started to form, Governor Rolph was called upon to send the National Guard to keep the prisoners safe. He refused. Thurmond and Holmes were dragged from the Santa Clara County Jail by the angry mob and were hung from a tree in St. James Park. Afterwards, Governor Rolph justified the San Jose lynching saying it was "a fine lesson to a whole nation. There will be less kidnaping in the country now. They made a good job of it." .

The volume is lacking the original slipcase but is housed in a custom drop-back box of gold cloth with a parchment spine, gilt lettering and rules on the spine, lined with ivory paper. ***CONDITION: The volume could almost be called fine, it has a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; there is some extremely minor edgewear, else fine. The ANS has two horizontal original folds, else fine; the order form has a few extremely shallow creases, else fine; and the custom box has some light offsetting from the green boards on the lining paper, else fine. ***CITATION: Ashendene Press Bibliography XXXIX. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         3 eigenh. Briefe mit U.

Dessau und Düsseldorf, 1931 bis 1933. - Zusammen (2+1+1=) 4 SS. auf 4 Bll. Kl.-4to und 8vo. Mit einem eh. adr. Kuvert. I. 1932).
