Private L. Kingsley, 14th West Yorkshire Regiment West Indies Voyage With Emphasis on Jamaica - together with 7 Medals.

[1933-1934], [Jamaica] 1933 - JAMAICA: an Album With Original Photographs From an "Athletic" Officer - Includes 7 Army Medals. Photograph album compiled by a young, athletic officer identified as Private L. Kingsley while serving with the 14th West Yorkshire Regiment in the Defence of Jamaica. Included with the album are seven (7) army command sports medals earned by Kingsley from 1930 to 1935 whilst abroad, one earned in Jamaica and one in Baluchistan, the others unspecified. Medals are made by F. Phillips of Aldershot, all but one in their original cases as issued. Oblong quarto album, tri-colour string-tied boards, contains 215 black and white photographs, three (3) newspaper clippings, and two (2) ephemeral documents printed by the army. Photographs vary in size, the smallest approximately 4 x 6.5 cm and the largest 10.5 x 10.5 cm. LOVELY AND UNIQUE ALBUM WITH ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF JAMAICA. VERY ATTRACTIVE. The album captures Jamaica with excellent photographs as the regiment was part of the Jamaica Defence Force. Street views show original colonial buildings, early nineteenth century lorries, a tram, and horse drawn carriages for transportation. An interesting and scarce photograph features a Jamaican marching music band. At least one expansive plantation estate was visited, yielding an unusual image of the factory with wagons overflowing with hand harvested sugarcane. Approximately 70 photographs appear to originate in Jamaica, some possibly being from Bermuda. The album is dispersed with occasional photographs of army sporting events and Kingsley earning a plethora of medals and trophies, and concludes with group photographs of the regiment and portraits of family members, some of which are presumably H. Kingsley. vols. volumen(es)/volume(s) S.P. páginas [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Sex Efficiency through Exercises: Physical Culture

London: William Heinemann (Medical Books), 1933 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. xviii, pp 164 with 54 half tone photographic plates and a 'Cinematographic Supplement'. Sexologist Van De Velde's physical guidebook for women's pelvic exercises illustrated with 480 photographic flicker cards. Bound in shiny blue cloth with gilt lettering in very good condition and with the all important 'Cinematographic Supplement' present and in excellent condition. Van de Velde proposed that his exercises would assist 'women and those who help them (whether as doctors, midwives, nurses and gymnastic instructresses) in the full evolution and utilisation of the feminine sexual capacities and faculties... Thus, not only will the physical intimacy of marriage be much enhanced for both partners, but the maternal functions of woman - gestation and birth - will be relieved of much pain and fear.' Unsurprisingly Van de Velde's work was greeted with much hostility on first publication and his Ideal Marriage was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. An intricate piece of book-design, Sex Efficiency is uncommon in trade. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information about this book..

        Building the Bridge

Sydney: Simmons Ltd, 1933. "MAKE Big Plans ; for little plans have no magic to stir men's blood and in themselves may never be realised. Make Big Plans ; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever growing insistency. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your Watchword be Order and your Beacon Beauty." Daniel H. Burnham The Plan is accomplished. The Bridge is built--the greatest Single-Arch in the World to-day. A landmark in the progress of our age--a symbol of faith in a young and virile nation. To the Engineer and Workman and to all those who have helped the Big Plan forward this book is respectfully dedicated. FOREWORD: "The Sydney Harbour Bridge, so long a dream, is to-day a bold and practical reality. A triumphant arch of steel, humanising our landscape in the Ideals of all true Australians, simplicity, beauty and service. It was a Big Plan ; the thoughts and strivings of many men. Its success lies in the loyalty of Engineers and Workmen to the Ideal of the Big Plan. Inch by inch, step by step, they built the Bridge, until to-day it is finished, a work of service, a thing of beauty, which will assert itself long after we are gone. In the following drawings, Mr. Curtis tells you something of the magnitude of the work that lay before the Builders. When an important stage in the construction had been reached, when the subject was "meat" for his pencil, whether by accident or design, he would invariably be seen, somewhere, "on the job." In these drawings are expressed the strength, the labour, the romance of a great undertaking." J.J.C. Bradfield. Signed first edition, limited to 400 copies; this copy is number 86. Bound in red, black and silver decorated boards with cloth spine, twelve black & white lithographs, one tipped-in colour lithograph, a fine copy.

Three Publicity Stills from the Set of the 1933 Film Laughter in Hell

Hollywood, CA: Universal, 1933. Very Good. Hollywood: [NP] 1933. Photographer unknown. Three original 8" x 10" black-and-white publicity photos taken on the Universal City set of the 1933 chain-gang drama film Laughter in Hell. Blue paper hand-typed descriptions mounted on verso of each photo; apparently for newspaper write-ups. Very Good overall. A few pieces of masking tape on verso, a few stains and some fairly light edge wear.Photo #1 (going from left to right in main product photo) shows Jim Tully, Irish-American ex-hobo-and-pugilist author of the book on which the film was based, hanging with star Pat O'Brien, known at the time as "Hollywood's Irishman in Residence." #2 shows former child-actor Tom Brown in stripes handling a pick on the set while background extras stare at the camera. "Take your pick" the jauntily-phrased verso caption begins.Photo #3 is the stand-out of the bunch, showcasing two lynched African-American convicts surrounded by their mourning comrades. As the verso caption states: "Just a good old fashioned lynching party-- and the honored guests are Director Edward Cahn, Pat O'Brien, Jim Tully and Clarence Muse. Snapped on the set of Universal's chain gang drama, 'Laughter in Hell' where the author of the human screenplay visited the actors recently." An institutional example of this photo appeared in Bauer and Dawidziak's recent Tully biography.A rare set of publicity stills from a pre-code chain-gang film with a frank depiction of the Southern racism and a broken criminal justice system that was presumed lost until recently.

[Photo Album]: Western Travel and Farm Family Photos

Colorado Springs, 1933. Near Fine. Oblong small quarto measuring 7" x 11". String-tied brown cloth over flexible paper boards. Contains 250 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" and 3.5" x 4.5" with some captions. Most pages are detached thus very good with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a family between 1925 and 1933 with vacation photography as well as vernacular family home images. The early images show wintery scenes of dogs and children running through snow as well as landscape photographs of farms. There are photos of horseback riding, dogs running, and herds of sheep. Many of the photos show trips to Colorado with images of Pike's Peak, hiking, and snow capped mountains. One caption from a hike reads, "the view from Broadmore Hill, South of Cheyenne School." Other views are from Austin Bluff and Stage Road. The natural beauty of Colorado Spring's is seen throughout these photos with images of trees, lakes, creeks, and the various mountain roads. Interspersed throughout the album are photos of various family members posing around homes along with children playing. There are also photos of the family farm including workers and farm animals and views of various crops. Additionally there are portrait style images of a young woman and her friend posing around the farm. Others show the elderly matriarch of the family and her husband with grandchildren and animals. One interesting group of photos shows a man and a woman outside using a tree stump as a table and furiously typing on typewriters in some sort of typing contest. The family continued to visit Colorado annually through 1933 often enjoying the Colorado Springs area. A group of photos towards the end of the album have been combined to create a panoramic photo of the mountain ranges with captions labeling each peak. Besides farm work members of the family were also involved in medical professions, (a professional portrait photo of a woman in a full nurse uniform is also seen here), and the military, a photo of two navy men is also present. An extensive account of a farm family in the 1920s and 30s and their trips to Colorado.

Steinlen - Chats et autres Betes. Dessins Inedits. Texte par Georges Lecomte

Paris, Rey, 1933. Large quarto, [3]-203, [5] (last blank) pages (including the pictorial front wrapper) with approximately 175 illustrations plus 18 tipped-in plates (one in colour, 2 folding) and a complete suite of all the in-text illustrations bound in at the rear. Contemporary unsigned designer-binding of half morocco and marbled papered boards, top edge gilt, with the original front wrapper retained; gilt-lettered spine stylishly decorated with eight wide raised bands with gilt and brown rules and an art deco cat in brown silhouette; leather very slightly rubbed at the extremities; marbled paper lightly rubbed at a few high spots; essentially a fine copy. One of only 535 copies in three variants; this copy is out-of-series and does not strictly conform to any of them. However, it is closest to the 35 copies on 'Japon Imperial, contenant chacun une suite a part des dessins sur papier de Chine' (in this instance, the extra suite is printed on Arches paper). Whatever else it may be, it is undeniably a superb item in every respect.

        John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1933 - 1933 Wisden - Original Hardback

1933 - Hi, This lot is an Original 1933 Hardback Wisden . It is in very good condition, the era of 1933 to 1937 were not the best of hardbacks as Wisden swapped materials in 1933, it resulted in poorer quality Wisdens but I am pleased to say that this 1933 is far better than most for the year. The front and spine gilt is excellent (spine gilt is usually terrible for this year) and the boards are very good, there is some wear to the spine cloth but I would say the boards were still very good. The pastedowns are fabulous and very yellow, the hinges are excellent and the internal pages are very clean. If you look at the page block you can see some oddity and a few pages have thumbing to the bottom corner but it is light although needs a mention but this Wisden is by far superior to many of the same year. Nice photoplate, Hard to find in good condition, this is not too far off excellent. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Prof. Dr. Joh. Ude in Glattfelden. Am 15. Jan. 1933". Privates Notizbuch mit einmontierten Zeitungsartikeln und hs. Eintragungen.

Wohl Glattfelden, 1933. - 38 SS. und einige weiße Bll. sowie 15 SS. Typoskript. Privater Halbleinenband der Zeit. 8vo. Wilhelm Meier.

      - Leningrad, Meshdunarodnaja Kniga 1933/ Tokyo, Naukasha 1933. Quarto 31x23cm publisher's cloth titled in blind (cloth blotchy and a little worn at the spine top); 102pp including four title pages - Russian, German, French and English - 12 full page and 103 small b/w illustrations, 101 colour plates. An owner's seal on the first title has been partly erased; some browning of the text pages; a pretty good copy. The Japanese translation is octavo publisher's wrapper (spine chipped); 44pp and 23 leaves printed on one side. A bit used. Once the Japanese started looking at the outside world they didn't miss much and the embrace of Chernikhov is a perfect example. Maybe a few select folk in western Europe and America managed to get their hands on a copy of this but not the Japanese. The left wing journalist, translator and head of Naukusha - publishers and agents for soviet books - Otake Hirokichi provided this translation and clearly imported a lot of copies of Chernikhov's masterpiece. You don't print a translation for a handful of copies. Just at the time that the Soviet authorities became fed up with the avant-garde so Japanese authorities became fed up with communists and the avant-garde - often the same people. Naukusha's publishing schedule seems to have been a blank between 1936 and 1946. I find no copies of the translation outside Japan.

Typed Letter Signed on eye catching "Star Trek the Motion Picture" stationery featuring the Enterprise, 4to, Hollywood, CA, Nov 24, 1978

Roddenberry writes to NASA engineer Jesco von Puttkamer, who was technical advisor to the first Star Trek film. Puttkamer (1933-2012) worked on deep space manned travel for NASA. Puttkamer led a long career with NASA receiving several distinguished awards. Roddenberry shares his view of film making at the end of his letter, but begins by thanking Puttkamer for his suggestions. :Thank you for your critical notes on Third Act revision…Some of your strongest criticisms have already been taken care of and a few others played much better than they appeared in the draft you saw. A number of things you commented upon were the source of some words between myself…and the actors…I doubt we will end up with anything on the screen to be ashamed of…our 'hammer and tongs' approach has given us some very interesting dramatic moments…filmmaking is a joint effort by various areas of talent and a proper synthesis of this often yields interesting results…." Above his typed name, Roddenberry signs, "Gene." A slight rust stain shows under the bow of the Enterprise and slight chipping to upper left margin, otherwise in fine condition. "Star Trek The Motion Picture" opened to mixed reviews but was nevertheless followed by more Star Trek films. The original television show gained popularity in reruns and spun off additional series.

Some Photographs of the Tracks of Penetrating Radiation" in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, Series A, Vol. CXXXIX [139], No. 839, 1933, pp. 699-726

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PAPER WRAPS OF THE FIRST CONFIRMATION OF THE IDENTIFICATION OF POSITIVE ELECTRONS, THE FIRST PUBLISHED PHOTOGRAPHS OF POSITIVE ELECTRONS, & THE FIRST DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DESIGN OF THE COUNTER CONTROLLED CLOUD CHAMBER WHICH MADE THIS SCIENCE POSSIBLE. The wraps are housed in a custom clamshell case.   Blackett and Occhianlini's famous paper is also the first to mention the connection between the discovery of the positive electron and Dirac's prediction of an anti-electron, hence it is also the first indication of positive and negative electron pair production. The paper is inclusive of photographic plates (15 photographs in total). In 1948 Blackett won the Nobel Prize "for his development of the Wilson cloud chamber method, and his discoveries therewith in the fields of nuclear physics and cosmic radiation"  (Nobel Prize Committee).      In 1928 Dirac proposed the famous Dirac equations - equations that "worked as well with negative energy quantum states (antiparticles) as with positive energy quantum states (particles)" (History of Physics: The Wenner Collection). By 1931, Dirac had concluded that "the negative energy quantum state must be an 'anti-electron' with the same mass as an electron. And while this particle would not be found in nature because of its destructive interaction with electrons, Dirac predicted that it could be observed if produced experimentally.    "In 1932, Anderson discovered the anti-electron (which he called 'positive electron') by allowing high energy cosmic rays to pass through a cloud chamber and a lead plate. In [March, 1933 paper], Blackett and Occhialini confirmed Anderson's sightings of positive electrons in a paper [this paper] that also proposed the mechanism of antiparticle creation and annihilation" (Wenner). In this same paper, the two are also "the first to report a phenomenon they called a cosmic-ray shower, an avalanche of reactions in which more and more charged particles are produced" (Brandt, Harvest of the Century, 216).   In summary, Blackett and Occhialini's paper presents (1) A detailed description of a method of making particles of high energy take their own cloud photographs, the counter controlled cloud chamber. (2) The most striking features of some 500 photographs taken by this method are described, and the nature of the showers of particles producing the complex tracks is discussed. (3) A consideration of the range, ionization, curvature and direction of the particles leads to a confirmation of the view put forward by Anderson that particles must exist with a positive charge but with a mass comparable with that of an electron rather with that of a proton. (4) The frequency of occurrence of the showers is discussed, and also their possible relation to the bursts of ionization.   Still, Blackett and Occhialini were cautious; they ended their paper stating: 'When the behavior of the positive electrons have been investigated in more detail, it will be possible to test these predictions of Dirac's theory. There appears to be no evidence as yet against its validity, and in its favour is the fact that it predicts a time of life for the positive electron that is long enough for it to be observed in the cloud chamber but short enough to explain why it had not been discovered by other methods' (Blackett 1933a, 714-716). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: The Royal Society. Complete issue housed in custom case gilt-lettered at the spine. 4to 10 x 6.75 inches (250 x 169mm). Continuously paginated, pp. 475-727. Blackett paper: 4 photographic plates. The issue is in fine condition with a light stamp of the University College of Wales at the top of the front wrap (see photos). The wraps are clean, bright, and solid; the interior as well.
