[Photo Album]: Western Travel and Farm Family Photos

Colorado Springs, 1933. Near Fine. Oblong small quarto measuring 7" x 11". String-tied brown cloth over flexible paper boards. Contains 250 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" and 3.5" x 4.5" with some captions. Most pages are detached thus very good with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a family between 1925 and 1933 with vacation photography as well as vernacular family home images. The early images show wintery scenes of dogs and children running through snow as well as landscape photographs of farms. There are photos of horseback riding, dogs running, and herds of sheep. Many of the photos show trips to Colorado with images of Pike's Peak, hiking, and snow capped mountains. One caption from a hike reads, "the view from Broadmore Hill, South of Cheyenne School." Other views are from Austin Bluff and Stage Road. The natural beauty of Colorado Spring's is seen throughout these photos with images of trees, lakes, creeks, and the various mountain roads. Interspersed throughout the album are photos of various family members posing around homes along with children playing. There are also photos of the family farm including workers and farm animals and views of various crops. Additionally there are portrait style images of a young woman and her friend posing around the farm. Others show the elderly matriarch of the family and her husband with grandchildren and animals. One interesting group of photos shows a man and a woman outside using a tree stump as a table and furiously typing on typewriters in some sort of typing contest. The family continued to visit Colorado annually through 1933 often enjoying the Colorado Springs area. A group of photos towards the end of the album have been combined to create a panoramic photo of the mountain ranges with captions labeling each peak. Besides farm work members of the family were also involved in medical professions, (a professional portrait photo of a woman in a full nurse uniform is also seen here), and the military, a photo of two navy men is also present. An extensive account of a farm family in the 1920s and 30s and their trips to Colorado.

After a long fight against the Ottoman Empire, Armenia had become part of the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic in 1922.The famous Armenian historian and linguist Tadeos Ayrapetovich Avdalbegyan (1885-1937) made the translation according to the tenth and last German edition (1922) by the Meissner publishing house. Book two followed in 1936, but book three was only published after World War II, in 1947 and 1949. The changing name of the editor reflects the history of soviet Armenia over the years.

Steinlen - Chats et autres Betes. Dessins Inedits. Texte par Georges Lecomte

Paris, Rey, 1933. Large quarto, [3]-203, [5] (last blank) pages (including the pictorial front wrapper) with approximately 175 illustrations plus 18 tipped-in plates (one in colour, 2 folding) and a complete suite of all the in-text illustrations bound in at the rear. Contemporary unsigned designer-binding of half morocco and marbled papered boards, top edge gilt, with the original front wrapper retained; gilt-lettered spine stylishly decorated with eight wide raised bands with gilt and brown rules and an art deco cat in brown silhouette; leather very slightly rubbed at the extremities; marbled paper lightly rubbed at a few high spots; essentially a fine copy. One of only 535 copies in three variants; this copy is out-of-series and does not strictly conform to any of them. However, it is closest to the 35 copies on 'Japon Imperial, contenant chacun une suite a part des dessins sur papier de Chine' (in this instance, the extra suite is printed on Arches paper). Whatever else it may be, it is undeniably a superb item in every respect.

Prof. Dr. Joh. Ude in Glattfelden. Am 15. Jan. 1933". Privates Notizbuch mit einmontierten Zeitungsartikeln und hs. Eintragungen.

Wohl Glattfelden, 1933. - 38 SS. und einige weiße Bll. sowie 15 SS. Typoskript. Privater Halbleinenband der Zeit. 8vo. Wilhelm Meier.

Typed Letter Signed on eye catching "Star Trek the Motion Picture" stationery featuring the Enterprise, 4to, Hollywood, CA, Nov 24, 1978

Roddenberry writes to NASA engineer Jesco von Puttkamer, who was technical advisor to the first Star Trek film. Puttkamer (1933-2012) worked on deep space manned travel for NASA. Puttkamer led a long career with NASA receiving several distinguished awards. Roddenberry shares his view of film making at the end of his letter, but begins by thanking Puttkamer for his suggestions. :Thank you for your critical notes on Third Act revision…Some of your strongest criticisms have already been taken care of and a few others played much better than they appeared in the draft you saw. A number of things you commented upon were the source of some words between myself…and the actors…I doubt we will end up with anything on the screen to be ashamed of…our 'hammer and tongs' approach has given us some very interesting dramatic moments…filmmaking is a joint effort by various areas of talent and a proper synthesis of this often yields interesting results…." Above his typed name, Roddenberry signs, "Gene." A slight rust stain shows under the bow of the Enterprise and slight chipping to upper left margin, otherwise in fine condition. "Star Trek The Motion Picture" opened to mixed reviews but was nevertheless followed by more Star Trek films. The original television show gained popularity in reruns and spun off additional series.

Some Photographs of the Tracks of Penetrating Radiation" in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, Series A, Vol. CXXXIX [139], No. 839, 1933, pp. 699-726

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PAPER WRAPS OF THE FIRST CONFIRMATION OF THE IDENTIFICATION OF POSITIVE ELECTRONS, THE FIRST PUBLISHED PHOTOGRAPHS OF POSITIVE ELECTRONS, & THE FIRST DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DESIGN OF THE COUNTER CONTROLLED CLOUD CHAMBER WHICH MADE THIS SCIENCE POSSIBLE. The wraps are housed in a custom clamshell case.   Blackett and Occhianlini's famous paper is also the first to mention the connection between the discovery of the positive electron and Dirac's prediction of an anti-electron, hence it is also the first indication of positive and negative electron pair production. The paper is inclusive of photographic plates (15 photographs in total). In 1948 Blackett won the Nobel Prize "for his development of the Wilson cloud chamber method, and his discoveries therewith in the fields of nuclear physics and cosmic radiation"  (Nobel Prize Committee).      In 1928 Dirac proposed the famous Dirac equations - equations that "worked as well with negative energy quantum states (antiparticles) as with positive energy quantum states (particles)" (History of Physics: The Wenner Collection). By 1931, Dirac had concluded that "the negative energy quantum state must be an 'anti-electron' with the same mass as an electron. And while this particle would not be found in nature because of its destructive interaction with electrons, Dirac predicted that it could be observed if produced experimentally.    "In 1932, Anderson discovered the anti-electron (which he called 'positive electron') by allowing high energy cosmic rays to pass through a cloud chamber and a lead plate. In [March, 1933 paper], Blackett and Occhialini confirmed Anderson's sightings of positive electrons in a paper [this paper] that also proposed the mechanism of antiparticle creation and annihilation" (Wenner). In this same paper, the two are also "the first to report a phenomenon they called a cosmic-ray shower, an avalanche of reactions in which more and more charged particles are produced" (Brandt, Harvest of the Century, 216).   In summary, Blackett and Occhialini's paper presents (1) A detailed description of a method of making particles of high energy take their own cloud photographs, the counter controlled cloud chamber. (2) The most striking features of some 500 photographs taken by this method are described, and the nature of the showers of particles producing the complex tracks is discussed. (3) A consideration of the range, ionization, curvature and direction of the particles leads to a confirmation of the view put forward by Anderson that particles must exist with a positive charge but with a mass comparable with that of an electron rather with that of a proton. (4) The frequency of occurrence of the showers is discussed, and also their possible relation to the bursts of ionization.   Still, Blackett and Occhialini were cautious; they ended their paper stating: 'When the behavior of the positive electrons have been investigated in more detail, it will be possible to test these predictions of Dirac's theory. There appears to be no evidence as yet against its validity, and in its favour is the fact that it predicts a time of life for the positive electron that is long enough for it to be observed in the cloud chamber but short enough to explain why it had not been discovered by other methods' (Blackett 1933a, 714-716). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: The Royal Society. Complete issue housed in custom case gilt-lettered at the spine. 4to 10 x 6.75 inches (250 x 169mm). Continuously paginated, pp. 475-727. Blackett paper: 4 photographic plates. The issue is in fine condition with a light stamp of the University College of Wales at the top of the front wrap (see photos). The wraps are clean, bright, and solid; the interior as well.
