        LOST HORIZON

New York: William Morrow & Company, 1933. First American Edition. First Printing, one of 2,500 copies. Octavo; full black cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and circular mountain scene stamped in blind to front cover; orange topstain; dustjacket; [4], 277pp, [7 blank]. Fine in a very Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped (priced $2.50), with some pinpoint wear at crown and a single closed tear at upper edge of rear panel. Hilton's best-known work was not a best-seller upon publication; 1,100 copies of the 2,500-copy print run was sold in advance, and it would be nine months before the remainder of the print run was exhausted. After Alexander Woollcott raved about the novel on his new radio program, Lost Horizon went through 10 hardcover printings between May-December, 1934, and would go on to sell more than 110,000 copies in hardcover before reaching masses of readers as Pocket Book #1 (May, 1939). Basis for Frank Capra's Oscar-winning film (1937), starring Ronald Colman, Jane Wyatt, and Everett Horton. Bleiler, p.149; Stevens, p.40-42 (Lincoln's Doctor's Dog and Other Famous Best Sellers).

- Etwas berieben, teilweise gering fleckig. Sonst und insgesamt gutes, gepflegtes Exemplar..

From a View to a Death.

Duckworth, London. 1933 - First edition. Octavo. A 262-page novel. Two pages of publishers' adverts at rear.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: ''For John Wyndham from a fellow author - Anthony Powell - Oct. 17th 1933''. The recipient is not the celebrated science fiction novelist (who in any event didn't start using the nom de plume John Wyndham until the 1950's) but a travel writer and poet who had been published by Duckworth in 1926. The publisher may be the link between Powell and Wyndham.Edges and front endpapers spotted. Very good indeed in very good, slightly nicked and creased dustwrapper, designed by Mischa Black, tanned at the spine. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

De Volmaakte Vrouw. Een Handleiding voor Speciale Lichaamscultuur. Met 534 Illustraties, waarvan 480 Filmbeelden

Thick 8vo. Amsterdam: Querido, 1933. Thick 8vo, (vi), 108pp. With 50 plates and 480 so-called film-reels (flip-book images), with captions. Original red cloth lettered in gilt, small tear to head of upper joint. otherwise very good. First edition. Van der Velde (1873-1937), a Dutch gynecologist and sexologist, made his fame by writing sexual "manuals", with for the time great frankness. This work deals with female body-culture, including a description of the sexual organs. The so-called film-stroken (film-reels) at end of volume, serve, when fanned quickly, "moving" pictures of the female [nude/sparsely clothed] body, a revolution in those days.

Fotografie v Reklame a Neubertuv Hlubotisk / Photography in Advertising and Neubert Gravure Printing

Prague: V. Neubert, 1933. Text block laid into the photomontage wrappers. (This copy was never bound.) A stunning example in bright photomontage wrappers, nearly perfectly preserved. By a wide margin, the nicest copy I have seen.. First Edition. Quarto. 35 full-page gravure illustrations. Ostensibly a company book for Neubert Gravure Printing of Prague, but really an artists' book of the highest caliber documenting the height of modern advertising photography between the wars. The photomontage advertisements reproduced incorporate the work of Josef Sudek, Jaromir Funke, Karel Hajek, and several others. Ambrosi's luminous photomontages include commissions for a variety of well-known companies, including Phillips, Gold Leaf, Gilette and Remington.

        CALIFORNIA & HAWAII PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM. Ca. 1933 - 1934

(San Francisco, Los Angeles, Waikiki, Kawaihapai, Honolulu):. (n. d.).. Oblong format: 10-3/14" x 13-1/4". Photographs approx.: 7" x 11". Ca. 1933 - 1934. 34 black album leaves.. Black flexible leatherette binding, tied with black cord and front gilt stamped with previous owner's name and "Photographs". Housed inside black box.. Modest wear to album (rubbing to edges, light scuffing). Bookplate to. inside back cover. Some page-toning to a few photographs, but withal. sharp, VG+ images. A VG+ example.. First 40 views are of San Francisco, including 10 street scenes, four overview, three building shots, San Francisco Bay, zoo animals, the beach south of the Cliff House, the windmill, Presidio gate, etc. No photographer is indicated on these prints but all are ink stamped on the back noting they were processed by the Bear Photo Service in either July or August, 1934. The other 28 images are all copyrighted by the photographer Rovere Scott. Each of Scott's photos measure approximately 7" x 9-1/4" and are printed on a variety of papers (glossy & textured) with several different finishes (glossy, matte, sepia & b/w). Most have a pictorialist look. He was often able to capture light in a dark and moody way. The 1933-1934 date attribute comes from the time when "Old Ironsides"/the Frigate Constitution visited San Francisco: March 22 to April 12, 1933. Rovere Scott's biography is somewhat confusing. San Francisco sity telephone books and directories list his photo studio/business at 504 Kearny Street, San Francisco, but has Scott living on the Oakland side of the Bay. Several libraries and museums hold his images. For some years the Robert Tat Gallery in San Francisco and John K. King, a book dealer in Detroit, have offered his photographs for sale. One of his images, titled "Looking at the Golden Gate before the Bridge", is referenced in 2012 by Gary F. Kurutz in an article in the California State Library Foundation Bulletin #103. Although the first 40 photos are unsigned, it is conceivable that Scott was also the photographer for them. Some of the street scenes share that pictorialist quality of his marked photos. Regardless, the combined 68 photos makes for a sensational pre- WWII album, not just documenting San Francisco, California and Hawaii in the 1930s, but doing so in a very artistic manner. The front cover of the album bears a name imprinted in gilt: Timoleon Dimitriou Kourkoulakis. There is a card tipped onto the inside front cover with his name in Greek, and tipped onto the inside back cover is a book plate with the name T. D. Kriton. It appears that the Kourkoulakis name was shortened to Kriton after arriving in the United States from Greece, where he was born around 1891. The 1940 census lists Kriton living as a lodge with the John C. Blakley family and three other borders at 2233 Union Street in San Francisco. Please inquire about a list of the 28 titled photographs by Rovere Scott. . 68 b/w photographs of varying scenes around California (San Francisco, Bay area & Southern California) and Hawaii (Oahu). Photos are mounted on black album pages, back to back, but each page has the original interleaf tissue still present between the facing photographs.

Grundprobleme der Nationalökonomie. Untersuchungen über Verfahren, Aufgaben und Inhalt der Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftslehre

Jena: Gustav Fischer, , 1933. Octavo (233 × 157 mm). Contemporary marbled boards and cloth spine, the original printed front wrapper laid down onto the front board. Ownership stamp of the Dutch engineer A. J. Bergsma, translator of von Mises Die Ursachen der Wirtschaftskrise in 1933, with his occasional pencil underlining and marginalia in German and in Dutch. Spine ends with just a touch of wear; corner to the half-title turned, one or two pencil marginalia minimally trimmed by the binder; an excellent copy. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed for Mises's Dutch translator "Mit den besten Empfehlungen überreicht vom Verfasser" to the half-title. "During the 1920s, von Mises became very much interested in epistemology. In opposition to the increasingly fashionable methodology of positivism, he set forth a methodology of purely logical deduction from self-evident and a priori axioms, based on the approach of Nassau Senior and of other classical and Austrian economists. He developed his methodological approach ?- which he was later to call 'praxeology' ?- in a series of essays, Grundprobleme de Nationökonomie (1933). Praxeology, with its stress on individual human action, on the individual's purposive choice of means to arrive at preferred ends, heavily influenced Robbins' methodological work, which English-speaking economists came to regard as outstanding" (IESS).

        The Cantos of Ezra Pound

New York: Farrar & Rinehart,, [1933]. Some Testimonies by Ernest Hemingway, Ford Madox Ford, T. S. Eliot, Hugh Walpole, Archibald MacLeish, James Joyce and others. Octavo pp. 22; original printed wrappers, stapled as issued. Even toning to periphery of wrappers, small loss from head of front panel, wrappers and text detached, yet a very good, clean copy of this fragile pamphlet. First edition, first printing, scarce: Copac records only 2 copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (Cambridge, Durham). This slim and ephemeral publication, "for gratis distribution" (Gallup), was issued in connection with the first American edition of A Draft of XXX Cantos (Farrar & Rinehart, 1933). Ford Madox Ford was the guiding light behind this little pamphlet: "Ford wrote to John Farrar of Farrar & Rinehart... that he wanted to assemble a tribute to Pound from several writers. Farrar agreed, and soon Ford was receiving testimonials from many of Pound's old friends" (J. J. Wilhelm, Ezra Pound: The Tragic Years 1925-1972, 1994, p.64). The other contributors are Edmund Wilson, William Carlos Williams, Allen Tate, Elizabeth Madox Roberts, Francesco Monotti, Paul Morand, H.D., John Peale Bishop, and Basil Bunting.

        Roll, Jordan, Roll

Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1933. Cloth. Collectible; Very Good/Very Good. 1933 1st edition, 2nd issue. Very unusual edition, incorporating the original sheets printed by Ballou in 1933 with the Bobbs-Merrill title page. The cloth is red, instead of the blue used by Ballou. The dust jacket is also different, with the illustration in this issue being a variant of the 1st issue illustration. Ballou, the book's original publisher, went backrupt in 1934 and was bought out by Bobbs-Merrill. As a precursor to that acquisition, Bobbs seems to have experimented with some of the Ballou titles, merging their sheets with its own imprint. The result here is a very uncommon issue. Some water staining to the preliminary pages, otherwise clean and tight and solidly VG. A degree of water staining as well to the lower half of the jacket's panels and light chipping to the spine extremes. Still though, presentable and attractive and soldly VG-. Thick octavo, 251 pgs. A legendary collaboration of Julia Peterkin's empathetic text and Doris Ullmann's moving photoghraphs.

This is a freakish survivor that was mailed by a London rare book seller to Dr. Ernest Du Bray in San Francisco in 1934. The book has remained in California for the last 81 years. The original letter bill of sale from 1934 is laid in. Dr. du Bray was an officer during WW1 and worked as a doctor at Base Hospital 18 A.E.F. He apparently read the book when it was published and became a great admirer of Brittain, ordering this first edition in dustjacket from a rare book dealer in 1934. When Brittain came to San Francisco in 1940, Dr. du Bray met her and had the book inscribed on February 13, 1940. Also laid in is a newspaper clipping documenting Brittain's stay at the Clift Hotel in San Francisco on the day the book was inscribed in San Francisco. Dr. du Bray cherished the book and wrapped the dustjacket in archival paper at some point, further protecting it. The book was acquired directly from Dr. du Bray's estate in 2008. A better provenance can not be found and the book has profited from its long stay in California. The book binding is is tight and clean, only a couple of tiny closed knicks to the top of the cloth spine. Lettering and cloth are bright and fresh. The contents are fresh and clean, completely devoid of foxing, single drop of what looks like coffee on the edge of the textblock. Near fine. The dustjacket retains the original publisher's orange advertising band. Because this has been on the book since new, the yellow jacket underneath is more toned above the band than under. The only serious defect is a two inch scratch on the spine, just barely touching one letter of the author's name. This defect could easily be repaired. Still very good as is. Rare as a first edition and almost impossibly rare in original dustjacket. I am aware of only two copies with dustjacket in trade in the past thirty years, neither signed. I believe this is the only inscribed first edition in original dustjacket (and wraparound) offered in the last thirty years. Also included is a history of Base Hospital 18 A.E.F., with correspondence to Dr. du Bray. Photos available upon request.

Der Marsch ins Reich der Caoba

Zürich: Büchergilde Gutenberg, 1933. First German Edition. Third book in Traven's Mahogany series, and the first of his books published by the new Büchergile Gutenberg in Zurich following the appropriation of the Berlin press by the Nazi's in May 1933. The novel was not published in English until 1961, when Robert Hale released it under the title March to Caobaland; the American edition, retitled March to the Monteria, is a reprint of the UK edition that was published by Dell as a mass market paperback in 1964. It tells the story of Celso, a Mexican Indian peasant trapped into debt slavery in a mahogany (caoba) camp deep in the jungle, which he slowly realizes he will never be able to get away from, earning barely enough to sustain his endless labors. A scarce title in dustjacket. TREVERTON 705, p.75-77. Octavo (23.5cm); blue-gray cloth, with titles stamped in maroon on spine and front cover; red topstain; dustjacket; 255pp. Some trivial wear to spine ends, else Fine. Dustjacket is lightly edgeworn, with several short edge tears (a few archivally mended on verso) and some minor touch-up to the black portions at spine ends; overall a bright, Very good+ example.

        The Empty Quarter

London: Constable and Company Ltd.,, 1933. Being a description of the Great South Desert of Arabia known as Rub' al Khali. Octavo. Original green cloth, title gilt to the spine, blind rules to the boards. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece and 31 other plates, and with 2 coloured folding maps and a similar plan. A little rubbed at the extremities, light toning, else very good in an unclipped, slightly rubbed jacket, short splits at the head of the spine, but no loss. First edition, first issue. A record of the "greatest" of his "remarkable journeys" (ODNB). Ronald Wingate considered that "it is mainly to him that the world owes its present knowledge of Central Arabia" (DNB), and his tombstone in Beirut describes him as Greatest of Arabian Explorers, judgements that it would be difficult to disagree with. Decidedly uncommon in the jacket. Accompanied by a very good copy of the January 1933 issue of The Geographical Journal containing the transcript of Philby's paper "Rub' al Khali" read to the RGS 23 May 1932.

        CALIFORNIA & HAWAII PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM. Ca. 1933 - 1934.

(San Francisco, Los Angeles, Waikiki, Kawaihapai, Honolulu): (n. d.). 34 black album leaves. Regardless, the combined 68 photos makes for a sensational pre-WWII album, not just documenting San Francisco, California and Hawaii in the 1930s, but doing so in a very artistic manner. Modest wear to album (rubbing to edges, light scuffing). Bookplate to inside back cover. Some page-toning to a few photographs, but withal sharp, VG images. A VG example.

        JOURNALS. HOOK And LADDER COMPANY No. 27, New York City Fire Department, The Bronx. # 79: September 8, 1931 - December 22, 1931. # 83: November 25, 1932 - May 4, 1933.

[New York]: 1931 / 1933. 2 volumes. 1000 numbered pages. Hook and Ladder Company No. 27 was originally part of Combined Engine Company 46 - Bronx, which was organized on July 11, 1881. The Company moved to new quarters at 451 E. 176th Street on April 1, 1895. The Combined Engine Company was disbanded in order to organize Engine 46 and Hook and Ladder Company 27 on June 1, 1904. In a NYTimes article of April 18, 1904, it was announced that Fire Commissioner Hayes had established a new Fire Department Battalion in the Bronx, to be known as the Seventeenth. This Battalion included Hook and Ladder Company 27. Hook and Ladder Company 27 was located at 453 E. 176th Street. The Company was relocated to new quarters at 460 Cross Bronx Expressway on November 6, 1972 at which time it was disbanded to organize Ladder 58. The two journals provide an in-depth and fascinating glimpse into the daily operations of one of New York's finest, Hook and Ladder Company No. 27. Noted down to the minute are the times the men came on duty and when they were relieved; when drills took place; inspections; testing of the telegraph equipment; who was on house watch and when he was relieved; exactly when an alarm came in, by what method, and from what station. Certain members of the Company were more complete in their entries stating that the Company and apparatus responded to alarm, where they found the fire and when they returned to the station. A nice set documenting a segment of the NYFD's long illustrious history. As to be expected with volumes put to daily use, the bindings are worn & soiled, with fraying front joint cloth to #79. Nevertheless, an About VG - VG set.

ON ANCIENT CENTRAL-ASIAN TRACKS. Brief Narrative of Three Expeditions in Innermost Asia and North-Western China.

London Macmillan 1933 - First edition. With a color frontispiece, 147 illustrations, and a folding color map at the rear. Additionally, several fold-out panoramas. 8vo, original sienna cloth gilt lettered and emblematically decorated, t.e.g. xxiv, 342, [2] ads. A handsome, clean and bright copy, very well preserved, tight and strong, minimal aging, one corner a bit bumped. VERY SCARCE AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. This book was based on a series of lectures Stein gave at the Lowell Institute in Boston at the request of the president of Harvard University and represents a succinct account of the explorations, antiquarian and geographical, which he undertook throughout his life in Chinese Turkistan and adjacent parts of Central Asia. While many of Stein’s career travels took him further south, he states that the memories of his years in the areas in "the deserts and mountains of innermost Asia are still as fresh and cherished as before." Within the pages of this book can be found the accounts of sojourns across the Hindukush to the Pamirs and K’un-Lun, ventures into the cave-shrines of the Thousand Buddhas, and explorations in the Nan-Shan Ranges, all told in Stein’s knowledgeable and eloquent style. A cornerstone of Asian travel literature and scarce in such well preserved condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
