(Ph. Henri, Lemma Fremde Dienste, in: HLS). New Verse

Drummond -1939, London 1933 - 34 issues in 32. Small 8vo. Stiff paper wrappers. Red wraparound band to Auden double issue (26-27), perforated subscription forms to many numbers. Staples rusted, closed tear at spine of Issue 1, age-toning consistent with vintage. A near fine set. First edition. A COMPLETE RUN OF THIS HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL PERIODICAL. Geoffrey Grigson was just twenty-seven when he founded the bi-monthly New Verse, which for most of the 1930s remained the only British literary publication devoted solely to poetry. Grigson insisted on high literary standards from his contributors, but once these were met anyone was allowed in; New Verse was important because it was the house journal of no one faction. One of the most important contributors was W.H. Auden: the early issues helped launch him, later ones defended him. (The Auden double issue in this set retains its rare wraparound band). The combative Grigson was happy to criticise those he published, seeing such interventions as a legitimate part of the conversation, but saved most of his ammunition for New Verse's critics: the Sitwells were savaged, and Laura Riding was (entirely fairly) dismissed as 'Queen-bore among all the poets'. The open-door policy of New Verse made it the works canteen of the 1930s poetry factory, with Surrealists rubbing shoulders with Mass Observationists and Objectivists, and Auden and MacNeice establishing themselves at the top table as the decade progressed. The Second World War ended publication, but New Verse's influence reached far beyond 1939. A complete set, in near fine condition, of this landmark publication.

The Song of Songs (Original Film Program)

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1933. Original film program for the 1933 film. With a striking image of Dietrich on the front wrapper, and much detail throughout regarding the production. Based on the novel by Hermann Suermann and the play by Edward Sheldon, about a country orphan who goes to Berlin to live with her aunt and who becomes the model for a handsome sculptor. Director Robert Mamoulian made the film simply and without artifice, a great departure from Dietrich's work with her Svengali, Josef von Sternberg. Filmed and released prior to the stringent Production Code, the filmmakers were allowed to display the full nude statue of Dietrich on the program's cover, for which she reportedly posed. An interesting example of Hollywood's attempts to recreate on US soil the Berlin that Marlene Dietrich came from, onscreen a beautiful place, in reality a city that ultimately rejected her. In addition to the photos and biographical information, the program contains a detailed and interesting essay to this effect, "Again a Gay and Friendly Berlin," with several photographs of cameras, Mamoulian, and Dietrich on the set. Two-color wrappers, 16 pages, saddle-stitched. Near Fine.

ARCHIVE of 24 Christmas and New Year Greeting Cards

      - Mostly undated though a few are dated from 1933 to 1950. Size ranges from about 4" x 5" to 6" x 11" with some printed on stiff, heavy stock. All of the cards feature personal covers from photographs to drawings with subject matter including fish and birds, Beebe's famous bathysphere, home views, etc., many with a humorous slant. Seventeen of the 24 cards are SIGNED as "Will" often with additional handwritten greetings. There are also 9 cards from Mrs. William Beebe, the author Elswyth Thane, SIGNED just by her and likely dating from after her husband's death in 1962. There are also 3 cards SIGNED by Jocelyn Crane, Beebe's research assistant. All of the cards were sent to Faith Dennis. William Beebe (1877-1962) was a naturalist, oceanographer, ornithologist, and an executive of the New York Zoological Society. With Otis Barton, he was the first to use the bathysphere, a deep-sea diving device, using it to set a dive record of 3,028 feet in 1934 that was not broken until 1949. Beebe wrote over 800 articles and 24 books on natural history. His wife, Elswyth Thane, was a romance novelist. Jocelyn Crane was William Beebe's research assistant and former assistant director (1952-1962) and director (1963-1966) of the New York Zoological Society. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Les Amours Pastorales de Daphnis et Chlo?

Chelsea: The Ashendene Press, 1933. Limited edition. Hardcover. g+ to vg. 1/290. Quarto. [4], IV, 163, [1]pp. Uncut. Original half vellum over paper covered boards, with gilt pastoral motif on front cover, and gold lettering and ruling to spine. Printer's device on title. Title page in red and black lettering. "Daphnis et Chloé" is the only known work of the 2nd century AD Greek novelist and romancer Longus. It tells the story of two teenagers who love each other but do not know how to make love. "Daphnis and Chloe" is the best known of the early Greek romances, precursors to the modern novel. Admired by Goethe, it has been reinterpreted in music and art by Maurice Ravel and Marc Chagall. This magnificent edition is based on Jacques Amyot's French translation (originally published in 1559), which is better known than the original. Without a doubt, "Daphnis et Chloé" is one of the most striking and original of the Ashendene* illustrated titles. The 29 splendid woodcut illustrations by Gwen Raverat complement the use of red type (marginal notes) and blue hand-drawn initials by Graily Hewitt. One of 290 unnumbered copies on watermarked paper (of a total edition of 310). Covers partly and slightly rubbed. Text in French. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition. * The Ashendene Press was the creation of St. John Hornby, director of the publishing house W. H. Smith, and became the most refined and gentlemanly of the English private presses, producing works of enduring finesse.

        Edward Lear on my Shelves.

Privately Printed by the Bremer Presse 1933 - LIMITED EDITION, 45/155 copies, copiously illustrated including five hand-coloured landscapes by Annette von Eckardt, pp. 445, [1], folio, uncut in the original linen backed boards, printed paper label on spine (label a little darkened), original slip-in case, case a bit faded and slightly soiled, very good. The colophon states: 'Printed by the Bremer Presse at Munich for William B. Osgood Field 1933 in one hundred and fifty five numbered and signed copies on Zanders hand made paper. The phototypes printed by J.B. Obernetter, five landscapes hand colored by Annette von Eckardt.' It would appear however that most copies, like this one, were not signed.

Les Amours Pastorales de Daphnis et Chloé

The Ashendene Press, Chelsea 1933 - 1/290. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Les Amours Pastorales de Daphnis et Chloe (With ANS from St. John Hornby)

The Ashendene Press, Chelsea 1933 - Limited edition of 290 copies printed on paper, unnumbered, plus 20 printed on vellum; laid in are (i) a short ANS on Shelley House letterhead, from St. John Hornby to the original owner of the book, thanking him for payment and stating "I too feel sad at the thought that this is practically my last book"; and (ii) the original order form (blank) on vellum. ***ABOUT THE BOOK: Numerous versions of the story of Daphnis and Chloe have been published and the story continues to enthrall readers. This version, the final book published by the Ashendene Press (other than their own bibliography), is one of the loveliest: the woodcuts by Gwendolen Raverat, the marginal notes in red, and the initial capitals filled in by hand by Graily Hewitt all form a harmonious whole that pleases the eye and the mind. The translation of Jacques Amyot, published in 1559, was the first vernacular edition and remains widely used. Many of us are familiar with the sad tale of the first printing of this book, which had to be destroyed due to the sheets having been packed before the ink had sufficiently dried; deeming the results unworthy of the Press, Hornby ordered all but 10 specimen copies to be destroyed and the entire book re-printed. ***DESCRIPTION: Original binding of green paper boards with a vellum back and vellum tips, with a gold stamp on the cover being a vignette of Daphnis and Chloe with some lambs encircled with greenery, fore- and bottom edges uncut, plain endpapers, title page in red and black, the 26 woodcut illustrations scattered throughout the text, text in French, red marginal notes throughout, blue initials and paragraph indicators, printed in Ptolemy type on Batchelor paper; quarto size (just over 10" tall), pagination: (i-iv) being the half-title and title pages, i-iv being the Editor's Preface, (1)-162, colophon page. The ANS is on a small sheet (approximately 8" by 5") headed "Shelley House / Chelsea Embankment, S.W. 3." and has a hand-written note covering the front and about a third of the back, dated 1 June 1934 and signed "C St.J Hornby"; the blank order form is printed on vellum, is approximately 7.25" by 5", printing in red and black, setting forth the prices for the copies on paper (6 guineas) and on vellum (40 guineas). The volume is lacking the original slipcase but is housed in a custom drop-back box of gold cloth with a parchment spine, gilt lettering and rules on the spine, lined with ivory paper. ***CONDITION: The volume could almost be called fine, it has a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; there is some extremely minor edgewear, else fine. The ANS has two horizontal original folds, else fine; the order form has a few extremely shallow creases, else fine; and the custom box has some light offsetting from the green boards on the lining paper, else fine. ***CITATION: Ashendene Press Bibliography XXXIX. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Marlborough: His Life and Times, full set of four British first edition, first printings finely bound in three-quarter red morocco

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1933. First edition, first printing. Leather bound. This is a full, four-volume British first edition, first printing set, beautifully rebound. The bindings feature sumptuously grained three-quarter red morocco over red cloth boards with generous leather corners, raised spine bands with gilt and black rules and gilt decoration, lion rampant device in spine compartments, ruled transitions, head and foot bands, gilt top edges, and laid paper endsheets. Winston Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The work was very well received, both critically and aesthetically. The first edition is a physically impressive production. The books measure 9.25 x 6.25 inches and are roughly 2 inches thick. The original bindings were a plum cloth with beveled edges, the Marlborough coat of arms gilt on the front cover, and a gilt top edge. Moreover, each volume is profusely illustrated. Unfortunately, the plum cloth bindings proved highly susceptible to sun fading. This set further refines the aesthetic of the first edition with a striking fine binding. We note a particularly prominent and attractive grain to the morocco of these three-quarter bindings. Condition of this set is fine. The bindings show no appreciable wear, soiling or fading and shelf appearance is superlative. The contents are crisp and clean for the edition. The spotting endemic to the edition is notably light, confined to page edges and a few prelims. We find no previous ownership marks. Note that there were later printings of both volumes I & II. We confirm that all four volumes are first printings of the British first edition. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A97.2(I-IV).a, Woods/ICS A40(aa); Langworth p.166.

Color Science Parts I-II AND The Ostwald Colour Album; Part I -- Colour Theory and Colour Standardization * Part II -- Applied Colour Science * The Ostwald Colour Album

London: Winsor & Newton Limited, 1933. First edition. Hardcover. Original green cloth, lettered and illustrated in gilt, Near fine. 3 vols.. 141, 171 pages Parts I-II -- & Colour Album with twelve plates in six folders contain 288 color chips. 22.5 x 16 cm. All three arranged by J. Scott Taylor. Part I -- Four Plates, Part II -- Two Plates: First edition in English of the "Farbenkunde." This first volume is devoted to color theory and standards of color; the second volume is devoted to color measurement and color harmony. This is one of the two Ostwald titles included in Wurmfeld's Color documents (no. 49): "Ostwald applied his scientific methods to the problem of color standardization, a topic of great interest at the turn of the century. Ostwald's color system took the form of a squat double cone - not unlike some previous theoretical models. His achievement was in the systematic presentation of all hues in their variations. Ostwald's model was displayed in the Bauhaus in Dessau, and his material was included in its courses of study." The third scarce volume -- Ostwald Colour Album: A Complete Collection Of Colour Standards For Use In Colour Specification And The Study of Color Harmony. Ostwald, a Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, was interested in developing a comprehensive scientific theory of color. His resulting thesis has influenced artists and scientists alike.
