      1933. Coppia di disegni originali a lapis di grande formato, mm 385x520 e 485x665, incollati su cartone di supporto, firmati in basso a destra "Bto Ronca"; al verso sul cartone il primo riporta la seguente dicitura "Benvenuto Ronca studiò dal vero e disegnò" seguita dal titolo ed accanto "Disegno dal vero di Benvenuto Ronca" insieme ad un timbro ovale datato 1933 - XI della ditta Ernesto Ferrari di Corso Porta Borsari; il secondo disegno invece riporta alcune annotazioni parziali ed una etichetta. I due disegni rappresentano una importante fase di sviluppo architettonico - edilizio di Verona: Il ponte della Vittoria era stato terminato da poco (i lavori erano iniziati nel 1926 e terminarono nel '29) e via Diaz era stata creata come collegamento dal Corso Cavour al nuovo ponte con conseguente abbattimento di molte case e della chiesa di S. Michele alla porta. I cavalli bronzei che oggi ornano i piloni furono realizzati in seguito ad un concorso del 1935. In Campagnola, dalla parte sinistra dell'Adige, si nota a sinistra del ponte sull'angolo col futuro piazzale Cadorna un edificio non finito, che fu inaugurato nel 1934 (Vecchiato, Verona nel Novecento, scheda 171). Lo stile essenziale e descrittivo delle opere è fortemente influenzato dal razionalismo e dalla severità architettonica imperante e ripropone anche, soprattutto il disegno verso il quartiere Trento, come era allora chiamato, una certa influenza metafisica. Benvenuto Ronca (Verona 1881 - Vicenza 1944) frequentò l'Accademia Cignaroli ed esordì nel 1902. Partecipò poi a diverse esposizioni internazionali (Bruxelles 1910, Roma 1911) e successivamente ad una infinità di mostre nazionali e locali. Postume vennero organizzate tre mostre monografiche, nel '48, nel '58 a Palazzo Forti e nel '69. Sue opere sono esposte presso la Galleria d'arte moderna. Vedi: Brugnoli P. Three original 8" x 10" black-and-white publicity photos taken on the Universal City set of the 1933 chain-gang drama film Laughter in Hell. Blue paper hand-typed descriptions mounted on verso of each photo; apparently for newspaper write-ups. Very Good overall. A few pieces of masking tape on verso, a few stains and some fairly light edge wear.Photo #1 (going from left to right in main product photo) shows Jim Tully, Irish-American ex-hobo-and-pugilist author of the book on which the film was based, hanging with star Pat O'Brien, known at the time as "Hollywood's Irishman in Residence." #2 shows former child-actor Tom Brown in stripes handling a pick on the set while background extras stare at the camera. "Take your pick" the jauntily-phrased verso caption begins.Photo #3 is the stand-out of the bunch, showcasing two lynched African-American convicts surrounded by their mourning comrades. As the verso caption states: "Just a good old fashioned lynching party-- and the honored guests are Director Edward Cahn, Pat O'Brien, Jim Tully and Clarence Muse. Snapped on the set of Universal's chain gang drama, 'Laughter in Hell' where the author of the human screenplay visited the actors recently." An institutional example of this photo appeared in Bauer and Dawidziak's recent Tully biography.A rare set of publicity stills from a pre-code chain-gang film with a frank depiction of the Southern racism and a broken criminal justice system that was presumed lost until recently.

The author was an heir to the Vanderbilt fortune. William Belanske, the artist who created the plates here, was staff artist at the American Museum of Natural History when Vanderbilt hired him. Vanderbilt says the trip chronicled here was "the first circumnavigation of the globe under the United States Naval Reserve yacht pennant." Original pen-and-ink drawing, signed "A Rackham" on lower left-hand corner, for the full-page drawing on page 275 in the The Arthur Rackham Fairy Book. London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd. [1933]. Image size: 9 5/8 x 6 7/8 inches: 244 x 175 mm. Matted, framed and glazed. "We will go in there," said Hansel, "and have a glorious feast. I will eat a piece of the roof, and you can eat the window. Will they not be sweet?" So Hansel reached up and broke a piece off the roof, in order to see how it tasted; while Grethel stepped up to the window and began to bite it. Then a sweet voice called out in the room, "Tip-tap, tip-tap, who raps at my door?" and the children answered, "The wind, the wind, the child of heaven"; and they went on eating without interruption. Hansel thought the roof tasted very nice, and so he tore off a great piece, while Grethel broke a large round pane out of the window, and sat down quite contentedly. Just then the door opened, and a very old woman walking upon crutches came out. Hansel and Grethel were so frightened that they let fall what was in their hands; but the old woman, nodding her head, said, "Ah, you dear children, what has brought you here? Come in and stop with me, and no harm shall befall you." So saying she took them both by the hand, and led them into her cottage."The old woman, leaning on a crutch and wearing a tall conical black hat is the stereotypical witch. She has long knobbly fingers, a big hook nose and is hunched over on her crutch. The way that Rackham has drawn her, although she is smiling a toothy grin, you just know that no-one should trust her. Hansel and Grethel are looking up at her, having just dropped pieces of her gingerbread house on the ground in fright - a piece of the window pane is missing.Although this drawing is only in pen and ink with no color, there is a depth of emotion that only Rackham can convey and it tells the story so simply and yet so effectively. He shows his true genius in just a few strokes of his pen.

        1933 Original Hardback Wisden

      Hi, This lot is a 1933 Original Hardback Wisden in Good Condition, very good for the year. Wisden chaaged materials in 1933 and the quality of the books suffered as a result, hence why 1933-1936 seem a lot more faded than the early 1920s Hardbacks. This 1933 is pretty average on the outside and slightly better than average on the inside. The gilt to the front and spine is fading as per th eyear and the boards are dulled. Odd mark to the boards. Internally it is a nice and bright book, very yellow pastedowns and titlepage and clean inside. The front hinge has some weakness but no mesh is showing , it is more inbetween pages 2 3 and not the front hinge. The rear hinge is strong but a small amount of mesh is showing and looks like it has seen some repair but inconclusive. Excellent photoplate. With the original matching card slipcase. With 90 full-page copper plate photogravure illustrations by Ulmann. Spine just a little sunned and spotted, all but 2 plain tissue guards lacking (felicitously, since if left in they stain the plates), one plate a touch browned, one or two minor stains to the odd page. An exceptional copy in the publisher's scarce card slipcase, that is split at top edge. First edition, signed limited issue. Number 48 of 350 copies signed by the author and photographer, and printed on large paper and specially bound with 90 images, instead of the 70 included in the trade issue. This copy is accompanied by the gravure signed by Ulmann, of the plate on p. 31, which, although not called for in the colophon, was supposed to be included. Of the few copies we have seen which retain the slipcase, about half have evidence of water damage and give credence to the widely held idea that a flood in the photographer's storeroom destroyed many copies. This collaboration by Ullmann and Peterkin focuses on the lives of second- and third-generation "free blacks" in the Gullah region of South Carolina. "Peterkin, a popular novelist who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1929, was born in South Carolina and raised by a black nursemaid who taught her the Gullah dialect before she learned standard English. She married the heir to Lang Syne, one of the state's richest plantations, which became the setting for Roll, Jordan, Roll" (Roth, 101 Books).

      Chiswick Press, UK, 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Ethel Le Rossignol (1874-1970), was a spirit painter and medium. She served as a nurse between in First World War, then after the war she turned to the world of spiritualism, eventually becoming a medium and started channeling a spirit simply known as J.P.F. and producing paintings and drawings for which, though she had some formal art education, Ethel claimed no credit, insisting that J.P.F. was the real author. J.P.F. also transmitted to Ethel the teachings of a group of advanced spirits, who explained the meanings of the paintings. These teachings and associated illustrations were collected in 1933 into this book which Ethel self-published under the imprint The Chiswick Press. The book contains a total of 42 illustrated figures, seven are full colour illustrations laid on & the other 35 are line drawings with text. Book - Boards have been recovered in matching blue cloth now with paper title label to spine. Ethel Le Rossignol (1874-1970), was a spirit painter and medium. She served as a nurse between in First World War, then after the war she turned to the world of spiritualism, eventually becoming a medium and started channeling a spirit simply known as J.P.F. and producing paintings and drawings for which, though she had some formal art education, Ethel claimed no credit, insisting that J.P.F. was the real author. J.P.F. also transmitted to Ethel the teachings of a group of advanced spirits, who explained the meanings of the paintings. These teachings and associated illustrations were collected in 1933 into this book which Ethel self-published under the imprint The Chiswick Press. The book contains a total of 42 illustrated figures, seven are full colour illustrations laid on & the other 35 are line drawings with text. Book - Boards have been recovered in matching blue cloth now with paper title label to spine. Perhaps the first anti-Nazi expose for non-Germans, it was published as Hitler rose to power to describe the 'Nazi Menace' and 'what the Hitler government has done since assuming office and what Hitlerism stands for' -- from the jacket flaps. Published simultaneously in several languages, with speculated involvement of Albert Einstein who was on the steering committee, though he denied knowledge of the project prior to its publication. First American edition. Brown cloth with black-and-white swastikas on spine and cover; front cover dinged on bottom edge and cloth faded at spine ends. This copy with two unclipped dust jackets, both issued by Knopf, both with English text. One jacket, based on the German original designed by John Heartfield, is chipped at the edges and corners, thus very good. The second jacket is chipped with some loss to spine ends, else very good. Very scarce in either jacket.

Tail of spine slightly bumped. Very good indeed in the Rex Whistler dustwrapper which is good, nicked, with a large chip at the head of the spine and with a few tears. A bright copy none the less.         Thunder Over Mexico [Que Viva Mexico] (Collection of 7 original photographs from the 1933 film)

      Los Angeles, CA: Principal Distributing Corporation, 1933. Collection of seven vintage black-and-white single weight studio still photographs from the US release of the 1933 film. Eisenstein had spent many frustrating months in Hollywood, ending with a failed attempt to adapt Dreiser's "An American Tragedy." With backing from avowed socialist Upton Sinclair, Eisenstein left Hollywood to create what would have been his epic about life in Mexico, "Que viva México." The film was intended to be an episodic study of Mexico's durable ethnography and symbols against the backdrop of its colonial history from the ancient Mayans to the 1910 revolution. Cinematographer Euduard Tisse shot the film in 1931 and 1932, intending to divide the narrative into four segments (which he called "novels"), "Sandunga," "Fiesta," "Maguey," and "Soldadera." Upon completion of filming, Eisenstein sent the footage to Hollywood for processing, but political and economic barriers prevented him from returning even to edit the film. In the wake of Eisenstein' forced departure, two films utilizing the film footage were made with Upton Sinclair's permission: "Thunder over Mexico" (1933, edited by Sol Lesser) and "Time in the Sun" (1940, edited by Mary Seton). Upton Sinclair subsequently deposited the unedited materials of the film in the 1950s with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Jay Leyda's subsequent work to make the footage accessible has resulted in the footage having been preserved for nearly 80 years for future study and reconstruction. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). "Preasens" was active between 1926 and 1930 it was formed mostly by members of the avant-garde group "Blok" with a mutual commitment to Constructivism. Stanis?aw Hempel (1892-1954) was a Polish engineer, known for his innovative wooden, steel and concrete structures. Entry of ownership on half title, and title page. Trace of dust at staples.
