Publisher's black cloth with gilt decoration on spine and author's gilt signature on front board. No dustjacket. Two minimal stains on the fore-edge. Spine ends and corners slightly bumped. Foot of spine a bit worn. Upper corners of the first 5 leaves have a little nick. Inner hinges a bit weak. With a tear in the paper at rear inner joint (10 cm), with some tissue visible. Original pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing for the color plate facing p. 84, illustrating the fairy tale “The Swineherd” in Arthur Rackham’s Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen (London: [1932]). Signed at lower left. Image size: 11 13/16 x 9 1/16 inches; 300 x 231 mm. Matted, framed, and glazed.This highly detailed pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing depicts the swineherd, “that is to say, the Prince (but, of course, they did not know that he was not a real swineherd),” and the Princess sitting just outside the pigsty, kissing, with three pigs in the pigsty at lower left, five maids of honor standing around them at right counting the kisses, and the Emperor watching them from behind a brick fence.

      Methuen & Co. Ltd. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., (1932). First edition, in second dust wrapper from 1933. Author's second book on the last generation of humanity, expressing a critical view of contemporary Thirties society from a science fiction point of view. His material, and thus his pacifism, is believed to have stemmed from his experiences during World War I, working with the Friends' Ambulance Unit. A bright, fine copy with faint wear to tips, in a fine dust wrapper with small loss to spine corners and an ink spot on the rear panel not affecting the text.

      Doubleday Doran and Co. Garden City: Doubleday Doran and Co., 1932. First US edition, first prnt. Maroon cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering and decorations on spine and front board. Beginning toning on spine cloth and board top edges but all gilt intact and bright; dustjacket with minimal edgewear, tiny edge tear and shallow two inch crease on front panel, two small abrasions on the spine, beginning toning and interior offsetting at the spine ends and corners; the gilt highlighting of the front panel and spine letting is still present. A tight, bright and solid copy in Very Good condition in a Very Good dustjacket with a Durafold mylar cover. The US edition is much less common than the UK edition and the US limited issue of 250 de luxe copies which preceded it. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. The images are of the book described and not stock photos.

        Light in August

      Smith & Haas Rahway, NJ: Smith & Haas, (1932). First printing, first binding of rough tan cloth stamped in orange on front cover and in blue and orange on the spine. Top edge stained orange. Faulkner's seventh novel marks a change from the interior monologue and stream of consciousness narrative modes of previous works to more conventional storytelling. A novel which, according to its jacket copy, is "as luxuriant as a plant grown in the tropical soil of the delta of the Mississippi River." Some spotting along top edge, else a very fine copy in the original orange and blue dust-jacket, which shows slight wear at extremities. Scarce in dust-jacket.

Endpapers a little foxed. Presentation copy, with Libman's signed, letter-length inscription to Dr. Jesse G. M. Bullowa (1879-1943) on the front free endpaper of Vol. I. Bullowa's bookplate in Vol. I. First Edition. Festschrift published to mark the 60th birthday of Emanuel Libman, founder of the cardiology department at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital, and a legendary diagnostician and teacher. Libman is associated with Libman-Sachs syndrome, a type of endocarditis. The festschrift contains contributions from 147 of Libman's former pupils, colleagues and friends, including W. C. Alvarez, Simon Flexner, L. Aschoff, Albert Einstein, Fielding Garrison, and Alexis Carrel, who remarked in his tribute that "Libman is medicine itself." Also among the contributors was Jesse G. M. Bullowa, a professor of medicine at New York University Medical School, noted for his researches on the serum treatment of pneumonia. Libman presented this copy of his festschrift to Bullowa; his letter-length inscription to Bullowa reads as follows: "Dear Bullowa, I am glad to inscribe this volume for you. At the same time, I wish to tell you that I have had much pleasure in watching your career, and that you have my admiration. You have not only, by your own effots, earned a prominent place in the profession, but have also been outstanding in your aid and encouragement to individuals and scientific groups and have made fine contributions yourself. Your whole attitude is dignified, broad and fine. Your devotion to me is much appreciated. With best wishes, Emanuel Libman. Feb. 10, 1935"
