Amid These Storms

First U.S. edition, only printing. A collection of 23 engaging essays on a wide variety of subjects published in 1932. Published in England as "Thoughts and Adventures", this is one of the few Churchill first editions for which the U.S. edition bears a different title than the British. The original dust jacket is extremely scarce and quite striking, bearing a full length photo of Churchill in Flanders, 1916, wearing his French piolu's helmet. Both the orange color on the dust jacket and the red-orange binding proved exceptionally prone to sunning. Further, the coarse cloth binding was also very susceptible to soiling. Consequently truly bright copies are almost never seen. Offered here is a near fine copy in a very good dust jacket. The orange cloth binding is clean and bright, showing no soiling, bright gilt, sharp corners, no wear and only the faintest, barely detectable hint of sunning to the spine. The contents are clean and tight with no spotting and no previous ownership markings of any kind. The dust jacket is unusually clean and unclipped, still bearing the original $3.50 price. The only losses of note are chipping across the head of the spine to a maximum depth of .25 inch. The orange panels on the jacket spine are lightly sunned, but nonetheless retain decent orange color. There is light wear at a few spots along the edges and at the corners. There is a vertical crease on both the front and rear dust jacket faces where the dust jacket was obviously once folded. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A95.2, Woods/ICS A39(ba), Langworth p.158.

The Games of the Xth Olympiad, Los Angeles 1932: Official Report

Los Angeles: The Xth Olympiade Committee of the Games of Los Angeles, U.S.A. 1932, Ltd.. Very Good. 1933. First Edition. Full leather. NOISBN . (full leather binding with gilt trim and lettering, raised bands on spine; marbled endpapers, top edge gilt) [visible wear at all corners, with an assortment of random surface-scrapes on both covers and spine; the heaviest wear is along the joints and to the bottom one-fifth of the spine; both covers are still firmly attached and the binding itself is quite tight, although the leather is split at the base of the spine, adjacent to which there is about a 3-inch separation of the backstrip at the bottom front joint; internally Fine]. (B&W photographs, maps, charts, facsimiles, etc.) Special leather-bound presentation edition of the Official Report of the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, an exhaustive and extensively illustrated chronicle of that year's Summer Games, held from July 30th through August 14th. Not confined merely to the athletic contests (although they are covered in great detail, with oodles of photographs of the competitors), this massive tome covers the whole megillah, and I mean everything: construction of the venues (including the Olympic Village), the logistics of traffic control, the design of tickets and badges and credentials, the arrival of the hordes of foreign dignitaries, and all the entertainment, social frippery and general pomp and circumstance attendant to the Games. And more! There's also a portrait photo of nearly everybody connected with the Games in every imaginable official capacity -- committee members, national Olympic Committee chairmen from around the world, etc. This copy was presented to Henry W. Wright, at that time Chairman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, who was an Honorary Member of the Honorary Committee of the Games (his portrait appears on the same page as that of Herbert Hoover, one of two Honorary Presidents of that Committee). In his regular governmental role, Wright was involved in bringing the Games to L.A. -- only the second time they had been held in America (the first was in St. Louis in 1904) -- and, not incidentally, in helping to funnel government funds into the expansion of the primary site for the Games, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Exposition Park (renamed Olympic Stadium for a time). Wright, a Republican, had served in the California State Assembly from 1915 to 1922 (as its Speaker in 1919-1921). He was appointed to the Board of Supes (as it wasn't called in those more respectful days) in 1921 to fill an unexpired term, was elected to a full term in 1924 and as the body's Chairman in 1930; he retired at the end of 1932 after making an unsuccessful run for Congress and then losing his Chairmanship in a year-end election. (It probably wasn't the easiest time to be a Republican, considering everything.) Laid in to this book are two related items, both in Fine condition: (1) the presentation card for the book itself; and (2) Wright's "Official Pass" to the Games, for Section 5, Loge LL. .

His artistic career spanned from the 1900s through the 1940s, during which time his work was exhibited throughout North America and Great Britain. In 1940 he was asked to become a resident artist at the Banff Centre, then known as the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he played an important role in the development of their visual arts program. Its Walter Phillips Gallery, which focuses on contemporary art, is named after him. The Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta holds an extensive collection of Phillips works and a research archive..

        ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND

New York: Limited Editions Club, 1932. Hardcover. Light wear to the corners, a few light scratches to the front cover, and one deeper scratch to the spine which has light chipping to the heel and heavier chipping to the head with about an 1/8" loss of leather. Very Good in a later, Fine slipcase. John Tenniel. In the original heavily gilt-decorated full red morocco. With the original illustrations by John Tenniel. Copy #12 of 1500 with typography and binding by Frederick Warde who has SIGNED the colophon page. Additionally SIGNED for the publisher on a separate page bound in before the title page by Alice Hargreaves, "the original Alice," one of only about 500 copies of the total edition of 1500 copies that were signed by her a few years before her death. Alice refused to sign other editions of this famous book in her lifetime, written by Carroll for her when she was young Alice Liddell, but she was convinced with the help of monetary compensation to sign these copies. She would also sign two years later copies of THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS by the same publisher. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the most famous children's books ever published here signed by the subject of the book. Many have praised this book, but perhaps novelist Sir Walter Besant's remark is the most insightful: "It admits us into a state of being which, until it was written, was not only unexplored but undiscovered.

Paris, Éditions Rieder, 1932. - Large 8vo. XII, 337, (1) pp., l. bl. f. Original printed wrappers. With 8 plates printed on 4. First edition. - "The true subject of this book is not named in the title, yet two-thirds of the whole are given up to cholera. To introduce his subject the author gives a description of the pilgrimage which is so readable that it is almost ungracious to say that one or two points are open to criticism [.] In the body of the book the author describes the epidemics at Mecca, the hospitals (!), the development of preventive measures outside the Hedjaz, and his hopes for the future. The policies of the Turks, King Husain, and Ibn Sa'fid, the change in defence from long quarantine to inoculation and disinfection, and the growth of the International Sanitary Conference are explained. He records inhuman wickedness and magnificent courage and generosity. A squeamish layman should not read some of the pages just before dinner or bed [.] The conclusion is that all pilgrims should be protected by inoculation against cholera, plague, and smallpox before leaving their homes [.] There are a few misprints, one of which makes the name of Dr. Olschanietzki even less pronounceable than it is by nature. A very useful book" (A. S. Tritton, book review in: Bulletin of the School of Oriental Studies VII, 1 [1933] 224). Macro, Bibliography of the Arabian Peninsula, 871. Mathematische Grundlagen der Quantenmechanik

Berlin: Julius Springer, 1932. First edition. A fine copy of his classic text on the foundations of quantum mechanics. In the early years of quantum mechanics several distinct formulations were developed; Heisenberg's matrix mechanics, Schrödinger's wave mechanics, and Dirac's more general transformation theory. However these theories lacked strict mathematical rigor (only much later through Laurent Schwartz's theory of distributions did Dirac's theory achieve this). Quantum mechanics is one of the fields of science which was fortunate to attract the attention of a mathematician of von Neumann's character. Von Neumann showed, in a paper published 1927, how generalized infinite-dimensional Euclidean spaces (function spaces) and linear operators provide the proper mathematical framework for quantum mechanics. Von Neumann was strongly influenced by Hilbert's program of axiomatizing the fields of science. The axiomatic approach which von Neumann takes in his theory has ever since dominated modern physics and functional analysis, and it was von Neumann who coined the term 'Hilbert space'. Von Neumann's work in this field culminated in this monograph which in addition to the earlier paper includes his important considerations, inspired by Bohr and Heisenberg, regarding the problem of measurement, in particular von Neumann's disproof of hidden variables. Published as Vol. 38 of Die Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wissenschaften in Einseldarstellungen. 8vo: 238 x 158 mm. Publishers full cloth: fine, and completely clean throughout. (VIII), 262, (2:adverts) pp. Rare in such fine condition.

Under the editorial supervision of Thomas Martin with a foreword by William Bragg, it contains all his notes, observations and figures as well facsimiles of his own sketches that pepper the margins. Also included are a number of b/w plates that show excerpts from his hand-written diary, his equipment (his large electromagnet), his larger diagrams or portraits of Faraday himself. Large 8vo. Blue cloth boards with gilt titling. In publisher's original plain white wrappers. Top edge coloured. The dust-jackets are a little bumped and shelf-worn. The Orators

London: Faber & Faber Limited,, 1932. An English Study. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge dyed blue. With the dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket of The Davenant Bookshop, Oxford. Very mild fading just to ends of spine, faint spotting to endpapers; an excellent copy in the somewhat spine-tanned jacket with small chips to ends and corners. First edition, first impression, of Auden's second regularly published book (after the collection Poems, 1930), and his first single coherent work. This copy if from the library of All Souls historian, literary scholar and poet A. L. Rowse (1903-97), a friend of Auden in his Oxford days, and author of "The Poet Auden: a personal memoir" (Methuen, 1987), which made much of their early friendship but asserted that Auden declined as a poet on leaving for America. It includes a single leaf, laid in, on both sides of which Rowse has written out notes on the book (undated but likely from when Rowse was writing his memoir of Auden), mainly interesting for revealing the biographical references within the text: "Q. obviously immense verbal talent + vitality. The atmosphere of the time - nerves on edge - expectation of war in boy Scouts terms. Private refs - to the sainted B - Q ... Edward Upward, the Carritts + Dick Crossman. Bogeys - Beethameer = Beaverbrook, Heathcliffe = Northcliffe. The Giants of those years - MacDonald, Briand Hoover Baldwin, really pygmies... Parody: full of private refs - Addresses for a Prize day incorporates a large slab of speech the HM actually delivered at his prep sch...", and proceeding into more specific notes with page references, one of which indicates the gulf between the poet and the don: Rowse retorting drily, of Auden's mocking line on p46, "The Oxford Don: 'I don't feel quite happy about pleasure.'", that "The Oxford Don had a point". This copy also includes, laid in, a single printed advertisement slip from Faber (very likely by T. S. Eliot; Rowse has signed the publisher's blurb on the flap of the jacket, "TSE") on which is printed a brief retrospect of "the history of English poetry in the first third of the twentieth century", categorising the poets into three camps, those "whose technique was perfected and whose reputation was established before the war", those "who perfected their weapons and who became established during and immediately after the war", and "finally the poets who have come long enough after the second type to have profited by their rebellion, without being directly derivative. It is only within the last few years that it has been possible to distinguish the existence of true growth among the third class, the youngest of our poets", meaning of course Auden himself.

        THE BOOK-BAG

1932. [inscribed by Maugham] Florence: G. Orioli, 1932. Original light blue boards with cream cloth spine, with dust jacket. First Separate Edition, issued as No. 9 in Orioli's "Lungarno Series," limited to 725 numbered copies signed by Maugham (this being copy #74).~This tale has a strange history. Maugham had submitted it to Cosmopolitan years earlier, but its editor Ray Long rejected it because he feared readers would be offended by the subject matter (incest between British adult brother and sister in Malaya; the ending is vaguely reminiscent of Conrad's "Oh the horror!" in "Heart of Darkness"). In 1932, Long decided to publish an anthology of the twenty best stories he had published in Cosmopolitan, and decided (with Maugham's acquiescence) to include "The Book-Bag." Three months after Long's anthology, Orioli's Florence edition came out (Orioli being the publisher who also took on some of D. H. Lawrence's writings others would not touch). (Toole Stott points out that ultimately, Ray Long indirectly lost his life due to Maugham: after reading The Moon and Sixpence Long decided that he too would become an artist in the South Pacific, left his career (in his fifties) to do just that, and subsequently committed suicide there when he realized he had no talent.) This is a near-fine copy, slightly faded along the top edge; the dust jacket is just about fine. Toole Stott A43b.~In addition to his signature on the frontispiece, Maugham inscribed this copy on the front endpaper "For Karl Pfeiffer | W. Somerset Maugham". Karl Pfeiffer of South Carolina (later an instructor at UNC) first met Maugham in 1923, when at a Washington hotel he was "recruited" as a fourth hand in a game of bridge. In the late 1930s Pfeiffer got back in touch with Maugham, and they communicated frequently; during World War II (at which time Maugham lived in the U.S.), they also met with some frequency. During the decade after the war, their relationship went steadily downhill, with Pfeiffer wanting to write a biography of Maugham and Maugham insisting that he not do so until after Maugham had died. Pfeiffer did so anyway (SOMERSET MAUGHAM: A Candid Portrait, in 1959), and in the book he insulted Maugham's writing -- essentially terminating their long association.

The Grandeur of the Gorges; Fifty Photographic Studies, with Descriptive Notes, of China's Great Waterway, the Yangtze Kiang, Including Twelve Hand-Coloured Prints

Shanghai:: A. S. Watson & Co./ Kelly & Walsh,. 1932.. Second Impression. Hardcover. Fine. An irreplacable record of the upper Yangtze River as it existed before the building of the Three Gorges Dam (construction began in 1994; completed in 2008), with illustrations and photogravures of natural and historic landmarks now partially or completely submerged by the river. Although some historic monuments were saved by being dismantled and moved, there are doubtless thousands of undiscovered and unexplored sites which have simply been lost as a result of the dam's construction. The famed terra cotta warriors of Xian, for example, an astonishing funerary monument representing the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China & consisting of 8,000 full size warriors, was discovered by a farmer in 1974, entirely by accident.& & The author, a Scottish photographer, lived and worked in China in the early twentieth century; the images included here are from the 1920s. Illustrations include the following: The Pierced Cliff, Red Rock, Bright Rapid, Ch'ing T'an Village, Yellow Cat Gorge, The Witches Gorge, Otter's Cave Rapid, The Temple of the Yellow Peaks, The Mountain of Learning, Bridge at Wan Hsien, The wind Box Gorge, Lamp Light Gorge, The City of Temples.& & 4to. Bound with a bright gold leaf covered spine and corners; with black embossed bamboo patterned silk and gilt lettering. Illustrated with 50 tipped in plates from photographs, each with a page of descriptive notes; sketches by Lt.Col. H G Gandy. The plates are of China's great waterway, the Yangtze Kiang and also include 12 hand-coloured tipped in photographs. A magnificent production.

        Memorial, The [First State]

London: Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 52 Tavistock Square, 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-/Very Fine. First Impression ('First Published 1932' on copyright page), one of only 1,222 copies. Publisher's first-state pale pink linen lettered in blue, brown top edge; in mid-brown illustrated dust jacket (designed by Jack Banting), printed in blue and priced 7/6. Just about Fine (front hinge very slightly cracked, end papers lightly spotted), in a pristine jacket. Woolmer 294. According to the Literary Encyclopedia, the death of Isherwood’s father in the First World War and the deep, lifelong mourning into which his mother fell provide much of the background for the family dynamics of Isherwood's early novels, including The Memorial, in which Cambridge student Eric Vernon finds himself torn between a desire to emulate his heroic father and his envy for his father’s great friend Edward Blake, who survived the war only to throw himself into gay life in Berlin and the pursuit of meaningless relationships. The story is imbued with Freudian family analysis, centering on the conflict between mother and son, and rebellion against the stifling English class society (Isherwood was born onto a withering branch of a distinguished family tree that had roots in Cheshire extending back to the Civil War). In his early career Isherwood adopted the high-Modernist style of the preceding generation of English novelists, particularly Virginia Woolf (whose Hogarth Press brought out The Memorial) and D. H. Lawrence. While breaking no new stylistic ground, Isherwood was experimenting with the novel form, recombining the chapters of The Memorial into a non-sequential chronology. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. Wundergarten Der Natur. Neue Bilddokumente Schöner Pflanzenformen

Berlin: Verlag für Kunstwissenschaft,, 1932. Quarto. Loose leaves in the original grey cloth chemise portfolio, decoration and titles to front board and spine in red. 120 full page photogravures by Blossfeldt. An excellent copy with just the lightest of browning to the chemise portfolio. First edition, first printing, portfolio edition: the preferred format of one of the greatest and most influential photographic books ever published, this being the second photobook in Blossfeldt's pivotal trilogy. The artist was by training a botanist; his use of extreme close-up technique began as part of his study. However he swiftly developed a fully fledged abstracted aesthetic which found a ready audience around the world. Many subsequent photographers cite his books as a key influence on their work. This loose leaf version is by far the scarcest of all of Blossfeldt's publications and by a margin the most desirable.
