Spine slightly rolled, tips rubbed, tiny split to cloth at head of spine, cloth fresh, contents foxed. A very good copy. First edition in book form, first impression. The Narrow Corner was first published serially in Hearst's International Magazine. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Edwin Carle, W. Somerset Maugham. 'Qu'importe sa vie à qui peut par son rêve disposer de l'espace et disposer du temps?' Beverley Hill, 4 March 1936". Edwin Corle (1906–1956) was a Guggenheim Fellow and the author of novels and short stories set primarily in the American West, including Fig Tree John (1935), Burro Alley (1938), and Three Ways to Mecca (1947).

        The Odyssey of Homer. Translated by T.E. Lawrence with a three-page note by him at the end of the text

      (London), 1932. Quarto. Unpaginated. Limited to 530 copies, printed and published by Rogers, Sir Emery Walker, and Wilfred Merton. Illustrated with 26 decorations of Homeric figures printed in black on round backgrounds of gold. It was Rogers who, upon reading Seven Pillars of Wisdom, decided that T.E. Lawrence would be an ideal translator for a new edition of the Odyssey -- a process that was expected to take two years and ended up taking four. The famous gold roundels -- one of the signature features of this edition -- were based on Rogers's drawings of figures from Greek vases, but each one illustrating something from Homer's epic. These illustrations famously required seven passes through the press. Even the ink was specially made from an early 19th century formula, using an oily resinous balsam that resulted in "a depth of black without gloss" in the roundels, as well as lending the book a slightly spicy aroma. One of Rogers' most beautiful books and, according to Joseph Blumenthal, "indisputably among the most beautiful books ever produced ... with only type and paper and ink, with consummate skill, Rogers created a masterpiece." A BR30 title. Aside from some negligible rubs to lower corners from the slipcase, a peerless copy, bright and fine. Housed in the original slipcase which shows some repairs.

Though boring, the work has its memorable pages, even chapters according to Colin Wilson who spent two years getting through it. E. H. Visiak stated that he initially believed that the book was almost unreadable, but upon rereading it - slowly - he found it fascinating and was so impressed that he wrote a fifty page critique of the novel. Brian Stableford says the novel is "marvelously atmospheric and admirably conscientious in its design of a hypothetical mythology and the metaphysics to go with it." E. F. A little rubbed, the spine a touch sunned and creased, light toning, but a very good copy. First edition. Extremely uncommon. Attack on the Nazi regime by the woman known as the First Lady of American Journalism. As head of the New York Post's Berlin bureau - the first woman to head a foreign news bureau of any importance - Thompson met Hitler on a number of occasions, for the first time in 1931, and in 1934 her continued opposition to Nazi rule led to her being expelled from Germany, the first journalist to be so. Back in the United States she began writing her "On the Record" column which ran in the New York Herald Tribune, and was syndicated to over 150 newspapers, she also contributed a a monthly column to the Woman's Home Weekly, and made frequent broadcasts on NBC. In 1939 she was on the cover of Time, the accompanying article describing her as the second most popular and influential woman in America after Eleanor Roosevelt, and explaining the nature of her influence: "Dorothy Thompson is the U. S. clubwoman's woman. She is read, believed and quoted by millions of women who used to get their political opinions from their husbands, who got them from Walter Lippmann" (Time, 12 June 1939). Katherine Hepburn's character in the Oscar-winning comedy Woman of the Year (1942) was based on Thompson. Bookplate of Irma B. Laykin, first wife of Los Angeles diamond merchant and jeweller Sol Laykin, to the front pastedown.

This lovely 1932 French language survey of primarily nineteenth and early twentieth century Greek history and culture by noted hellenophile Rene Puaux is brimming with lovely gravure reproductions of photographs as well as color lithographs. A most presentable example of this uncommon item limited to four hundred copies showing a bit of overall creasing, soiling, and chipping to its fragile paper wrappers. The interior and textblock are sound and quite bright but for a smattering of light foxing throughout - primarily along the foredge borders. Some of the color plates are spotted on the margins and/or tissue overlays, but the exquisite images themselves remain fresh and bright. It has been priced accordingly. A fine copy, with a hint of wear the extremities, bright spine, minor rubbing to the top edge of the front board, bright and clean interior; unclipped dust jacket, with wear and short tears to the extremities, light chipping and minor losses to the spine ends, some light toning to the spine, a hint of soiling to the otherwise bright and clean panels. Overall, an attractive and pleasing copy. Death in the Afternoon is Hemingway's non-fiction book about the sport of bullfighting, which ranges from technical descriptions of the art of the sport to philosophical conjectures about people who are interested in or partake in bullfighting. Hemingway first became interested in bullfighting after attending the Festival of San Fermínin in Pamplona, Spain in 1923, and became a lifelong aficionado. This technical text is enlivened by Hemingway's clear passion for the sport and keen understanding of its nuances. It is illustrated with reproductions of photographs of Spanish bullfights accompanied by descriptive text. Additionally, Death in the Afternoon contains a reproduction of the 1913 paining The Bullfighter by Juan Gris, whom Hemingway had met while they both lived in Paris in the 1920's; Hemingway had bought this painting along with Gris' 1926 The Guitar Player from the artist in 1931. Although Death in the Afternoon is the author's first full book-length non-fiction piece, Hemingway's love for bullfighting can also be seen in his 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises.. 1st Edition.         Amid These Storms

      New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very good. A collection of 23 engaging essays on a wide variety of subjects published in 1932. Published in England as "Thoughts and Adventures", this is one of the few Churchill first editions for which the U.S. edition bears a different title than the British. From the original front flap blurb: "These true stories concern such things as the tides that make a politician change his mind; the domination of chance in human lives; the cartoonists who mocked Churchill; the chances and events that occurred while he was in the trenches; phases of the war seen from intimate participation with the high commands; flying experiences in 1912; the Irish; the future; and contemporary change." This book engagingly displays both the breadth of Churchill's mind and life experience and the vivid hues of his personality. The U.S. first edition's original dust jacket is extremely scarce and quite striking, bearing a full length photo (on both the front cover and the spine) of Churchill in Flanders, 1916, wearing his French poilu's helmet. Unfortunately, this edition was fragile and most copies look like they spent time in the trenches with Churchill. Both the orange color on the dust jacket and the red-orange binding proved exceptionally prone to sunning. Further, the coarse cloth binding was very susceptible to soiling and wear. Consequently truly bright copies are almost never seen. Offered here is the first U.S. edition, only printing - a truly fine copy in a highly complete original dust jacket. The orange-red binding is stunning - immaculate, tight and square. No soiling. Square corners. Bright gilt. No fading to the spine, which remains the same vivid color as the boards. The contents are equally pristine - crisp, bright and tight. No spotting or previous owner marks of any kind. Even the untrimmed fore edge of the text block is clean and bright. Really a spectacular copy. The unclipped dust jacket still bears the original $3.50 price on the front flap. It is notable for two reasons: it is highly complete and the orange color on the spine is unfaded. Consequently, spine presentation is unusually good. The dust jacket is fairly soiled and stained overall and has closed tears at the edges of up to .5 inches in length. Losses, however, are minor, consisting of light chipping at the edges and the top of the spine to a maximum depth of .25 inch. The bright, unfaded orange color on the spine - something we almost never see - helps compensates nicely for the soiling. We should disclose that this is a "married" pair, the volume having previously lost its jacket and the jacket having come from a volume which sustained irreparable damage. The cloth shows only a hint of wear at the extremities but does have a small split at the head of the spine (see photos). Hinges solid, binding square. Former owner's signature to the front free endpaper, otherwise unmarked. The unclipped dust wrapper has moderate edgewear with a number of small chips, lacking at the most 3/8" at the head of the spine, with a similar chip at the heel. The intimacy of the inscription is telling; we've never before seen Benchley inscribe a book as "Bobby." .

The spine is slightly faded, no other inscriptions etc , mild offsetting to end papers with a little looseness to the front end-paper and some light staining therein. Otherwise very nice indeed. The inscription (on the front-free endpaper) reads /Mrs Hammersley/ HER OWN COPY/with very much love/ from Nancy. 24 Nov 1932 Violet Hammersley (Wid or Lucky) features widely in Nancy Mitford's letters. A close if somewhat older friend. In a very good wrapper with the required wide flaps. One minor chip to the top and tail of the spine and some minor loss to corners. A small residual mark to the front panel. Small patch of rubbing affecting 'd' of 'Pudding' on the front panel therein. Stated overseas edition on spine (in place of 7/6). One of 1000 copies, of which 200 were sent to the British Colonies. Some professional internal repairs. General wear to the extremities. Exceptionally rare in the dust wrapper and equally so signed and inscribed in the year of publication with such an interesting association.

Here is a jacketed first edition, first printing of Churchill's collection of 23 engaging essays on an incredibly wide variety of subjects, published in 1932. It has been called "The broadest range of Churchill's thought between two hard covers" and reflects the two qualities that so characterize Churchill's life - a remarkable breadth of both mind and life experience. From the original front flap blurb: "Whether he is dealing with personal reminiscences, or telling us his views on any subject under the sun, Mr. Churchill stamps the page with his own vivid personality." The khaki cloth of this edition is notoriously prone to scuffing, wear, and soiling. Moreover, the contents proved highly susceptible to spotting. This copy is very good minus, with some pardonable defects, but with a binding notably free of the typical scuffing. The khaki cloth binding is clean and square, with sharp corners, bright gilt, nicely rounded spine, and virtually none of the usual scuffing and discoloration. There is trivial shelf wear to the bottom edge, a one inch abrasion to the cloth at the upper rear corner, a few small dents at the edges, and some barely perceptible rippling to the binding cloth on the rear cover. The contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks. We note differential toning to the endpapers consistent with the dust jacket flaps, confirming that this copy has spent its life jacketed. There is a faint damp scent at the pastedowns. Very light spotting is confined to the pastedowns and top edge, which is also modestly dust soiled. The first printing dust jacket is unusually clean and unclipped, with fairly modest loss limited to the spine ends and corners. However, in the course of applying a new dust jacket protector we noted that the dust jacket is nearly split into five pieces. The flap folds are nearly completely split, with discreet tape reinforcement to the verso applied by a previous owner. The spine is split vertically near the center with a previous verso tape repair only at the very bottom to align a fragment just below the publisher's name. That said, the vertical spine split in particular is so clean that we initially took it for just a crease. All three splits virtually disappear beneath the new, archival quality, removable dust jacket protector we have applied and the visual appearance is far better than the "good" grade we give the jacket in view of the splits. Lightly rubbed at extremities, spine faded and a little rolled, occasional small spots to contents. An excellent copy in the jacket that is just a little rubbed along the edges with a small tape repair to the verso of the toned spine panel and some faint scratches to the upper panel. First edition, first impression of this classic. Cold Comfort Farm is rare in the dust jacket, and this copy is in exceptional condition. It is certainly the best we have handled.

Itagaki was the most important theorist of Modernism in the arts and design of the pre-war period in Japan, as well as being the father of the concept of "shinko shashin" [modern photography]. A very uncommon and important treatise, the title of which could be translated as THE WORLD OF ART - ITS CONTEMPORARY CURRENT AND EDDIES. With a hint of discoloration and a bit of bowing to the covers, else very good or better in the soiled original slipcase.

      A first edition, first printing published by Chatto and Windus in 1932. A very good book with one small name and date to the front pastedown. Some rubbing to the corners. In a dust wrapper which is unclipped and has benefitted from some restoration to the spine and edges and now presents very well indeed. Robert Brewster Stanton was a civil engineer and surveyor of canyons in Colorado for the Colorado Canyon and Pacific Railroad Company between 1889 and 1890.

The cream dustwrapper printed in blue, neatly price-clipped, has just the slightest of wear to the tips of the spine, which is mildly darkened, and a tiny chip at the bottom of the rear panel. Near Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper. Scarce in this condition. Bloomfield A3: only 1000 copies printed. Auden's third book, though his first consisted of less than 50 copies.

        KING CHARLES II. Typescript of an Unpublished School Play.

      1932 - Typescript comprising two sections: first, three pages of carbon copy with Orwell's autograph pencil side-notes recording sound effects, the name 'Geoffrey' written twice in red crayon; second, twelve roneograph pages with some pencil markings probably in the hand of one of the boy actors [Geoffrey Stevens], 15 pages, folio and 4to, spindle holes, some slight wear and creasing, marginal fraying at outer leaves, final leaf torn and reinforced; together with an original photograph of Orwell and his school at this time, mounted and labelled.Provenance: Geoffrey Stevens; sold Sothebys, London Dec. 15th 1988; Private Collection. This short historical play, which is written partly in blank verse, was composed by the twenty-nine-year-old Eric Blair when he was headmaster at the Hawthorns High School for Boys in Hayes, Middlesex, a small private school having little more than a dozen pupils (as the accompanying photograph shows). It was performed as the school's Christmas play at St Mary's Church Hall in Hayes in 1932. This was in a period when Orwell had finished Down and Out in Paris and London (or Days in London and Paris, as it was originally titled) and was looking for a publisher. He was working on Burmese Days and had only sought the job at Hawthorns because he needed an income. Fed up with his job and his lack of disposable income, he then spent the best part of a term writing and rehearsing a school play for the boys to perform. With dramatic speeches, noisy altercations involving stocks and pikes, unlikely coincidences and some very theatrical dialogue, it is little wonder that Geoffrey Stevens, one of the boys who performed in the play, enjoyed the experience considerably more than Orwell himself, who referred to it in a letter to Eleanor Jacques on 19 October as 'a mucky play the boys are to act later'. By 18 November he could record: 'I have had to write & produce a play- am now in the throes of rehearsing it- & what is worst of all, have had to make most of the suits of armour etc. for the boys to act it. For the last few weeks I have been suffering untold agonies with glue & brown paper etc.' (Collected Essays, Journalism and Letters, 1968, I, 102-105). Geoffrey Stevens, whose copy this is, remembers the undertaking more fondly: 'The performance lasted only half an hour, but we spent hours in preparation, finding props, constructing the scenery etc., all of which he [Orwell] supervised closely. It was ambitious. He arranged for plywood doors on either side to have saw cuts made in them so that Cromwell's men could break them open with their pikes. It worked perfectly and made a great crashing noise coming down.' (Orwell, The Authorised Biography, Michael Shelden, 1991, p172.)Orwell was seldom pleased with his work and destroyed the majority of his manuscripts. King Charles II, while it lacks some of the literary merits of his published work, has pastiche, humour and a political message. Aside from Nineteen Eighty-Four, less than half of which survives, this would appear to be the only Orwell typescript in existence. It remains unpublished, and this is the sole known copy.
