BLAUE LICHT, DAS [BLUE LIGHT, THE] (1932)

Germany 1932 - Vintage original 9 ¼ x 11 ¾" (23 x 30 cm.) double weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, Germany. Leni Riefenstahl, Mathias Wieman, Beni Fuhrer, Max Holzboer, Martha Mair, dir: Leni Riefenstahl; Sokal. A beautiful character portrait of the legendary actress, director, writer, editor and producer, Leni Riefenstahl. Riefenstahl performed all these creative tasks on this film for her own production company. This is the story of Junta, a woman hated by the people of her village, who suspect her of being a witch. She is the only person who can climb the nearby mountains and has discovered the mysteries of the blue light during her climbs. She is cast out of the town and goes to live in the mountains. She shares the secret of the blue light with one man, but he betrays her. Groundbreaking filmmaking at the time, it was an early sound film (though a silent version was also made) to be shot on high mountain locations and employed the people who lived in the mountains as the supporting players. Riefenstahl had made a series of mountain films with director Arnold Fanck in the years prior and was now ready to make her own films. So impressed by this film was Adolf Hitler that he asked Riefenstahl to make TRIUMPH OF THE WILL. This stunning portrait features the film's title and L.R. Studio credit at the bottom margin and a German blindstamp at the bottom right corner. The still is numbered 44. There is some slight creasing at the very bottom right hand corner and a bit of creasing and tiny tear in the blank white margin towards the right edge side near the sudio logo. ABOUT FINE.

        Japanese Fan Designs

No date. (circa1945).. 38 beautiful individual life size original designs (approximately 45 x 22cm) for Japanese folding fans all but one bearing the stamps of the fan maker ??? [To-ku-da-sei]. One of the designs appears to be earlier (possibly 1932) and is likely not from the ??? [To-ku-da-sei] studio as it does not bear their stamp. The use of inks, metallic ink and gouache in a wide variety of colours from the very subtle to the highly coloured have created this stunning collection of original designs. All but two are laid down on a plain paper backing. The paper backing is torn and chipped at edges and two of the designs have closed tears. Each design is presented in a mylar sleeve and the whole collection is offered in an archival card clamshell box. This is a rare collection of Japanese fan (sensu ??) design patterns which appear to have been created in the first half of the 20th century. Most of the sheets are stamped To-ku-da-sei (???) which appears to be the studio. It appears this company is no longer in business today. Designs include a variety of fans for everyday use by both males and females. Some sample designs are specifically for the highly prized and expensive Sandalwood (??) fan. This rare collection provides us with a sense of the variety, colour, beauty and sophistication of Japanese fan designs. .

The isolation of crystalline vitamin A plus other materials

      1932-1945.
From the Isolator of Vitamin A to the Discoverer of Vitamin E

Holmes, Harry Nicholls (1879-1958). (1) (with Ruth E. Corbet) The isolation of crystalline vitamin A. Offprint from Journal of the American Chemical Society 59 (1937). 2042-2047pp. Original printed wrappers. Inscribed by Holmes to Herbert M. Evans (1882-1971) on the front wrapper: “To Herbert M. Evans with the Compliments of Harry N. Holmes.” (2) Autograph letter signed to Evans. 1 page. Oberlin, April 21, 1945. 282 x 214 mm. (3) Black and white photograph of Holmes in his laboratory. 255 x 207 mm. Signed on the verso by Holmes: “Harry N. Holmes Oberlin College.” (4) (with Henry M. Leicester) The isolation of carotene. Offprint from Journal of the American Chemical Society 54 (1932). 716-720pp. Original printed wrappers. 236 x 160 mm. Together 4 items, plus cover addressed in Holmes’s hand to Evans with Evans’s pencil note “Isolation of crystalline Vitamin A” on the front. Very good to fine.

First Editions, Offprint Issues of nos. (1) and (3). Holmes and Corbet were the first to isolate vitamin A in pure crystalline form. Their paper, “The isolation of crystalline vitamin A,” was their first full-length description of their achievement, following a very brief announcement published in Science earlier in 1937 (see Garrison-Morton 1074). Holmes inscribed this copy to Herbert M. Evans, the co-discoverer of vitamin E (see Garrison-Morton 1070), after Evans had written to Holmes requesting a copy and other materials; this is explained in Holmes’s letter to Evans:

"The compliment of your request in your Feb. letter deserved an instant reply but delay in finding a photo—and a rush of work—delayed me.

"It was more than kind of you to call our isolation of crystalline vitamin A a “classic,” especially after the boorish attitude of Karrer at Zurich.

"And so I’m glad to send you, in separate packet, photo, reprint desired—and a few others that I hope may interest you."

No. (3) is the photograph Holmes sent to Evans. “Karrer” refers to Paul Karrer (1889-1971), who was the first to establish the structure of beta-carotene (the chief precursor of vitamin A); Karrer received a share of the 1937 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his research on vitamins. No. (4), the paper by Holmes and Leicester, describes a laboratory method of isolating carotene “which would minimize the exposure of the materials to air at all times” (p. 717).

Address delivered at the opening meeting of the International Congress on Light Therapy in Copenhagen 15. August 1932. 10pp. Copenhagen: IIe Congrès International de la Lumière, 1932. 236 x 158 mm. Original printed wrappers. Fine copy.

First Edition in English of Lys og liv, Bohr’s lecture on “Light and life” delivered before an international congress of light therapists in Copenhagen. This pamphlet, dated 1932, apparently predates both the lecture’s publication in Danish in Naturens Verden and the English translation published in Nature, both of which were published in 1933. A German translation appeared in Naturwissenschaften in the same year.

Bohr’s lecture marks his first detailed attempt to apply concepts arising from quantum mechanics (particularly complementarity) to areas outside physics. “Here, for the first time, Bohr raised a question that was to preoccupy him, off and on, until his death: Would it ever be possible to push the analysis of living processes to the limit where they can be described in terms of pure physics and chemistry?” (Pais, p. 441).

Bohr’s lecture can be looked upon as one of the foundation stones of molecular biology in that it inspired the young physicist Max Delbrück—who was in the audience when Bohr delivered it—to switch from physics to biology “to find out whether indeed there was anything to this point of view” (quoted in Pais, p. 442). In 1935, two years after hearing Bohr’s lecture, Delbrück and two other scientists published a paper on genetic mutations caused by x-ray irradiation, in which they concluded that the gene must be a molecule. The ideas expressed in this paper inspired Schrödinger to write his famous What is Life?, a work which in turn motivated Watson, Crick, Wilkins and other scientists to devote their careers to unraveling “the secret of the gene.” Delbrück himself became a leader of what was known as the “phage group” of bacterial geneticists; in 1969, he received a share of the Nobel Prize for physiology / medicine for describing the means by which living cells are infected with viruses. “It is fair to say that with Max [Delbrück], Bohr found his most influential philosophical disciple outside the domain of physics, in that through Max, Bohr provided one of the intellectual fountainheads for the development of 20th century biology” (quoted in Pais, p. 442). Light and life

IIe Congrès International de la Lumière, Copenhagen 1932 - Bohr, Niels (1885-1962). Light and life. Address delivered at the opening meeting of the International Congress on Light Therapy in Copenhagen 15. August 1932. 10pp. Copenhagen: IIe Congrès International de la Lumière, 1932. 236 x 158 mm. Original printed wrappers. Fine copy. First Edition in English of Lys og liv, Bohr’s lecture on "Light and life" delivered before an international congress of light therapists in Copenhagen. "Here, for the first time, Bohr raised a question that was to preoccupy him, off and on, until his death: Would it ever be possible to push the analysis of living processes to the limit where they can be described in terms of pure physics and chemistry?" (Pais, p. 441). Bohr’s lecture can be looked upon as one of the foundation stones of molecular biology in that it inspired the young physicist Max Delbrück—who was in the audience when Bohr delivered it—to switch from physics to biology "to find out whether indeed there was anything to this point of view" (quoted in Pais, p. 442). In 1935, two years after hearing Bohr’s lecture, Delbrück and two other scientists published a paper on genetic mutations caused by x-ray irradiation, in which they concluded that the gene must be a molecule. The ideas expressed in this paper inspired Schrödinger to write his famous What is Life?, a work which in turn motivated Watson, Crick, Wilkins and other scientists to devote their careers to unraveling "the secret of the gene." Delbrück himself became a leader of what was known as the "phage group" of bacterial geneticists; in 1969, he received a share of the Nobel Prize for physiology / medicine for describing the means by which living cells are infected with viruses. "It is fair to say that with Max [Delbrück], Bohr found his most influential philosophical disciple outside the domain of physics, in that through Max, Bohr provided one of the intellectual fountainheads for the development of 20th century biology" (quoted in Pais, p. 442). Gay Court Life

London - Hutchinson and Co., 1932. London - Hutchinson and Co., 1932 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A history of life in the Royal Court in eighteenth century pre-Revolutionary France. The court was centred upon the king's household, and a courtier was a noble honoured with some task in the royal domestic service: gentleman of the bedchamber, master of the hunt, lady-in-waiting or page. Expansion under Louis XIV had fixed the court permanently at Versailles and refined it as a political instrument. There were soon thousands of court officers and Versailles became the model for all European states. Like a magnet, it drew nobles from the provinces to shine in the reflected glory of the king. It existed to exalt the monarch and concentrate the gaze of observers on itself. (YA)Includingfifteen engraved plates with tissue guards. Translated from the original French by Gleb Struve and Hamish Miles. Condition: Rebound ina green half-morocco binding. Externally very smart, with just some slight spotting to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Binder's stamp to verso of frontfree-endpaper. Pages are bright but quite heavily spotted. Overall: VERY GOOD with a good onlyinterior..
