        Swallowdale. Illustrated by Helene Carter.

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Co. 1932. 8vo, 393 pp. With illustrations throughout in black and white, and a vignette on the title-page and one full-page plate in brown. Original brown cloth stamped in yellow, dust-jacket, a virtually flawless copy as issued. First American edition, a peerless copy as issued virtually impossible to find in this condition. Both the UK and the US first editions are extremely scarce. Ã’Swallowdale is the second book in the Swallows and Amazons series by Arthur Ransome. It was published in London in 1931 and a year later in the US. In this book, camping in the hills and moorland country around Ransome's Lake in the North features much more prominently and there is less sailing. A significant new character, Maria Turner, the Blacketts' Great Aunt, is introduced.& & Ransome was living in the Lake District and he drew on his experiences and memories of encounters over many years with the local farming community. Ransome had often climbed Old Man of Coniston and in the book, this becomes the children's Kanchenjunga. Expeditions to Kanchenjunga in the Himalayas had been much in the news while Ransome was writing the book.Ó (Wikipedia) The UK edition was illustrated by Clifford Webb and the US edition by Helene Carter, so the two editions are quite different.

        The Devil's Highway

New York/London: D. Appleton and Company. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. [tight clean book, the slightest bit of shelfwear to bottom edge; jacket shows minor wear along top and bottom edges, tiny stain at bottom edge of rear panel, short closed tear at top front foldover]. The first and only collaboration between Harold Bell Wright, the enormously popular author of "The Winning of Barbara Worth" and "The Shepherd of the Hills," and his son Gilbert Wright, here writing as "John Lebar." An attack on "scientism," it did not sell well upon its first publication, and is considered by collectors of Wright's work to be one of the most difficult titles to find today, especially in such superb condition. .

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to "Dear Klarkash-Ton" [Clark Ashton Smith] written on both sides of a single sheet of plain 5 1/2" x 9 inch paper, signed "E'ch-Pi-El." The letter is not dated, but is accompanied by an envelope addressed to Smith in Lovecraft's hand which is postmarked 21 March 1932. The envelope has Lovecraft's full signature and 10 Barnes Street return address in his hand on the verso

Faint fold creases, else fine, with "Mar 21, 1932" later added in. pencil at top of first page. Good content. (#114496). A chatty letter, relating literary news about himself and their fellow writers of weird fiction: the demise of Swanson's GALAXY magazine, which "died a-borning!," the purchase of a new fountain pen at Woolworth's, his aversion to "composing" on the typewriter ("the very sight of the damn thing empties my mind of all connected ideas and images"), typing a circulation copy of "Witch House" (when he "can get the nerve" to do so), his plan to "fix up a new note book of daemonic plots" as "I've lent my old one -- used since 1919 -- to various brother fantaseers from time to time, & it's just about worn to pieces," and the progress of stories by various mutual acquaintances. "Tucked into this letter, is one of those fragments of weird fiction that emerge spontaneously in some of Lovecraft's letters (though usually during the critique of some work by the recipient). Here, Lovecraft mentions that during a visit to a local museum he 'came upon a black, gleaming specimen which certainly cannot be other than an eikon of Tsuthoggna! It was a semi-shapeless congeries of nighted curves -- squat & swollen, & with a curious suggestion of flabby viscosity despite the superficially petrific composition... [and it] left little room for doubt that it once stood in some curtained niche... of some such arcane delver as Athlaphoros, who dwelt in the Street of the Alembics & vanished suddenly shortly before the desertion of the city...' All pretty juvenile, no doubt, but the boyish exuberance is hard to resist." - Robert Eldridge.

I am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang!

Vanguard Press, New York 1932 - The author's first book, originally issued as a six-part serial in the pages of True Detective Mysteries in 1931, and picked up by Vanguard the following year. A slightly fictionalized but largely autobiographical account, written while in hiding, of the author's adventures with the Georgia penal system, beginning with his arrest for stealing $5.80 from an Atlanta grocer in 1922. Burns's intent was to expose the brutality and corruption of the chain gang system, and he succeeded; the book created an instant furor upon publication and became a bestseller for Vanguard. It served as the basis for the Mervyn LeRoy film released later the same year, starring Paul Muni in the role of Burns. The film heralded a new genre - the prison drama - and won three Oscars including a Best Actor Award for Muni. Copies in dustjacket are rare, this being only the second jacketed copy we have handled. SUVAK 38. Octavo (21cm); light gray cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in blue on spine and front panel; blue topstain; dustjacket; 257pp. Contemporary owner's name and date to front endpaper, light foxing to right edge of textblock, with some light offsetting to endpapers and a few faint splash marks to topstain; Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.00); evidence of clear tape removal on verso at corners, spine ends, and rear flap fold; shallow chipping at spine ends and corners, including a small triangular chip affecting the "R" in the author's name at lower front panel; light sunning to spine, with faint soil to rear panel; still a substantially complete, Very Good example.         Un Soir, a Cordoue. Pointes Sèches De José Pedro Gil.

Edición limitada a 152 ejemplares solamente. Size: 4º [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        A ROOM OF ONE'S OWN

McClelland & Stewart, Toronto 1932 - Woolf, Virginia. A ROOM OF ONE'S OWN. Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1932, 8vo., 172pp. Publisher's original blue boards, titles to spine gilt. A near fine fresh copy [neat contemporary name on the ffe.] in the blue printed dustwrapper of the First Canadian Edition, first printing. The most elusive of the First Editions having been printed in the US [possibly from Harcourt Brace supplied sheets] in an unknown but very small edition, [250 - 500 copies, a speculation]. A very nice example for the completist, the DJ has one repaired closed tear but is otherwise very bright & interesting in its yellowish tonal quality. Woolf's major polemic against patriarchy, based loosely on two lectures she delivered, one at Newnham and the other at Girton. Kirkpatrick and Clarke A12dd. Woolf observed in her diary, "I shall be attacked for a feminist". An increasingly uncommon & important Woolf title & 20th century literary highlight. Excellent copy. Noted in Kirkpatrick's latest edition. As far as we know, fewer than three or four copies in dustwrappers have surfaced in the last 30 years. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Scarce & fairly early Faulkner item. "The publication of Miss Zilphia Gant by The Book Club of Texas is appropriate. Faulkner's work is so closely identified with the South that it seems almost out of place on an Eastern publisher's list. And he found an early recognition and critical appraisal in the Dallas News book page, the editor of which, John H. McGinnis, has some claim to be the reviewer who first appreciated the significance of Faulkner as new force in American fiction. A glance at some of the reviews of Faulkner's work will reveal that he has not always been so fortunate in his critics. Henry Smith. Dallas, May, 1932". (From the Preface, p. xi). Tairow definierte sein Theater der Synthese als "neorealistisch". Er hatte nach anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten großen Erfolg sowohl im In- als auch im Ausland.

        The Common Reader: Second Series

London: Published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press. 1932. First. First edition. Page edges slightly soiled, still about fine in an about very good dustwrapper that has some modest chips and tears and some overall soiling. Small Hogarth Press pamphlet for Woolf's works laid in. Inscribed by the author to her clerk typist: "Margaret Walton with thanks from Virginia Woolf. Oct. 13th 1932." The inscription has offset very slightly on the front flap.
