The watercolor depicts Peter Rabbit squeezing under a gate and is captioned "Peter squeezed under the gate". Done with Peat's characteristic bold color and deco flair. Unsigned but guaranteed an authentic Peat original. Although she was a prolific illustrator, original art by Peat rarely comes on the market.

Wrappers, [94] pp. The book is in Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Very minor rubbing to the bottom edge of the cover, otherwise perfect. Author's inscription on the fly-leaf. Limited edition book, current copy no. 66. Current brilliant collection of the Avant-Garde parody by Benediktas Babrauskas refers to the alternative narrations, which provoked the national metanarrative of the Lithuanian literature. Babrauskas’ narrative type, which was frequently called anarchistic, not only excluded the shortcomings of the national metanarrative, but also presented the synchronic case of researching the literature. The collection includes 53 parody and satirical poems, and the last piece of the book is a parody of Liudas Gira's critics. Eminent Lithuanian writers and poets get mocked in the book: Balys Sruoga, Putinas (Vincas Mykolaitis), Kazys Boruta, Bernardas Brazdžionis, Ignas Šeinius, Juozas Banaitis, Maironis, Kazys Binkis, Juozas Tysliava, Vincas Kreve, Teofilis Tilvytis and many others. Anarchy appears not only in the content but also in the design. Avant-Garde poetic texts including experimentations with vocabulary and using original statements are supplemented by typographical visual experiments: hyphens instead of words, painted over words, missing page numbers (only on the page 13 footer is printed number 2), somewhere used nonstandard poems titles (4. A. A.; 5. ?). Below each poem's title is marked ridiculed persons names, which are slightly changed (instead of correct Liudas Gira written Liudnas Gira, which can be translated as Sad Gira). It all looks chaotic and amazing! Most notable feature of present publication - author's name is nowhere mentioned in the book. Illustrated wrappers is a great combination of constructivist font on the front cover and modernist graphic design on the back cover. Front cover is a sequel to the back. Benediktas Babrauskas (1910-1968) - Lithuanian writer, poet, prominent literary critic and public figure. Collaborated with many Lithuanian periodical editions. In 1948 edited anthology "Lithuanian way", in 1962 developed a new "Dictionary of Contemporary Lithuanian language", in 1965 compiled and edited "Lithuanian fiction anthology". Since 1949 lived in Chicago, there he was in 1951-1958 Lithuanian Writers Association Chairman, in 1955-1957 Vice-President (and one of the founders) of Lithuanian Cultural Foundation Community. Slipcase shows the usual minor scuffing and light chipping at extremities; good. This is No. 691 of a limited edition of 968, signed by the author and artist. Auflage 30 Exemplaren, dieses ausserhalb der Nummerierung.- Fritz Pauli (1891-1968) begann 1906 eine Flachmalerlehre und arbeitete nach deren Abbruch bei einem Fotografen in Lausanne. 1909 kaufte der Maler Albert Welti von Pauli die Radierung Susanna I und empfahl ihn dem Lehrer von Karl Stauffer-Bern, Peter Halm, der damals in München unterrichtete. Pauli studierte mit Unterbrüchen bis 1914 in dessen Kompositionsklasse, ohne allerdings je eingeschriebener Schüler der Akademie gewesen zu sein. In München machte er die Bekanntschaft seiner aus Winterthur stammenden späteren Frau Jenny Bruppacher, die sich in Deutschland zur Textilzeichnerin ausbilden liess.Nach der Rückkehr aus München 1914 bis zu seiner endgültigen Niederlassung in Cavigliano 1935 führte Pauli ein unstetes, von kürzeren und längeren Reisen geprägtes Wanderleben, unterhielt aber gleichzeitig ein Atelier in Zürich. Er weilte ab 1918 verschiedentlich in Fex, wo Landschaftsaquarelle entstanden, die zu seinen schönsten Arbeiten zählen. 1921?25 verbrachte er die Sommermonate am Zugersee, 1926 im südfranzösischen Collioure. 1925 reiste er nach Tunesien, von 1928 bis 1932 lebte er in Paris. Zum engeren Freundeskreis gehörten neben den Künstlern Ignaz Epper und Johannes Robert Schürch, dessen Bildnis Pauli malte, insbesondere der Schriftsteller Jakob Bührer und der Zürcher Sammler Kurt Sponagel.Internationale Anerkennung fand Pauli schon in jungen Jahren mit seinem druckgrafischen Schaffen. 1926 legte August Klipstein den Katalog des grafischen Werkes vor. Als besonders fruchtbar für seine Malerei erwiesen sich die Aufenthalte in Davos-Frauenkirch (1925?26), wo er Ernst Ludwig Kirchner begegnete, und in Amden (1931?35). Es entstanden Bildnisse und zahlreiche Landschaften. Von den 1930er-Jahren an zählte Pauli zu den Repräsentanten der offiziellen Schweizer Kunst, erhielt verschiedene Aufträge für Monumentalmalerei und nahm 1948 an der Biennale di Venezia teil. Das Kunsthaus Zug zeigte 1994 eine Retrospektive, die anschliessend von der Civica Galleria d?Arte, Villa dei Cedri, Bellinzona, übernommen wurde.Fritz Paulis expressionistisches druckgrafisches Schaffen (Radierung, Holzschnitt) der 1910er- und 1920er-Jahre ist von grosser kunsthistorischer Bedeutung. Zeitgemässes und Unzeitgemässes halten sich später die Waage. Auf die expressive Malerei der 1920er- und frühen 1930er-Jahre folgte nach der Übersiedlung von Amden nach Cavigliano ein dunkeltoniger, magischer Realismus. Die Befragung der sichtbaren Wirklichkeit auf ihre verborgenen, geheimnisvollen Aspekte steht sowohl in den Landschaften als auch in den Bildnissen jener Jahre im Mittelpunkt. 1935 entwarf Pauli ein Glasfenster für die Kirche Oftringen und malte anschliessend bis 1938 für die neue Kapelle im Bürgerspital Zug Passionsszenen. Es folgten während der Kriegsjahre der Freskenzyklus im Antonierhaus in Bern und 1947?1956 die Fresken im Berner Rathaus. Sowohl die Konzeption als auch die Ausführung der drei Zyklen erwiesen sich als sehr kräfte- und zeitraubend. Rückblickend schrieb Pauli in sein Tagebuch, die 1956 fertiggestellten Fresken im Berner Rathaus hätten ihn «seelisch & körperlich frühzeitig beschädigt». Die Rathausfresken nehmen eine Sonderstellung innerhalb des Schaffens ein: Pauli, den zuvor immer die Erfahrung der eigenen Verlorenheit beschäftigt hatte, entwickelte für diesen Zyklus trotz seiner inneren Vorbehalte ein Bildprogramm, das ? um mit dem Kunsthistoriker Max Huggler zu sprechen ? auf der Annahme basiert, «nur die reine Idealität sei mit der Monumentalität vereinbar». Im anschliessenden Alterswerk verschmelzen Schöpfungs-, Natur- und Individualgeschichte zu Bildern des in letzter Konsequenz erfassten Naturkreislaufes. 1951 schrieb Jakob Bührer über seinen Freund, es sei dessen «offenes Bekenntnis zum Menschen, seiner Veranlagung, Abhängigkeit und Beschränkt [Attributes: Signed Copy]

A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY, COPIOUSLY ANNOTATED BY EDWARD SACKVILLE-WEST, 5th Baron Sackville, and with his bookplate. Nearly a third of the pages bear marks and pencilled notes by Sackville-West, and he reserves his lengthiest vitriole for the end: "The book of an averagely stupid, practically illiterate, American -- a deeply maddening book..." Elsewhere, Sackville-West marks passages as "rubbish," refers to Pound's "poor intellect", and demeans Pound's American English, as when he underlines the sentence "I rest my case." and writes "not English." Sackville-West, the cousin of Vita, wrote four autobiographical novels in the 1920s and 30s that failed to find a large audience. His work as a music critic and as biographer of Thomas de Quincey, however, made him a well known figure. His column in 'New Statesmen' championed the young Benjamin Britten and helped establish the composer's reputation in Britain. His biography of de Quincey, titled 'A Flame in Sunlight,' won the James Tate Black Memorial Prize, one of Britain's oldest literary awards. Gallup A33.

      London: Sheed & Ward, (1931). Octavo. iv, 121 pp. First edition. One of 500 copies signed by Eric Gill and Rene Hague and printed by Hague & Gill. This is a presentation copy, inscribed on the colophon. Illustrated with twenty-five figures, including ten type specimens and four illustrations from wood engravings by Gill. According to the bibliography, there were twenty-five copies specially bound by Donald Attwater in full Welsh sheepskin tooled in blind. The present copy appears to be one of those specially bound copies, as it is in full sheepskin with blind tooling, though with very subtle differences from the bibliographical description. Evan Gill notes, for instance, that "the blind tooling on front and back was not uniform in design" and that on the present copy is uniform. He also notes that GILL TYPOGRAPHY reads downward on the spine, where here, the author's name is not on the spine. Slight fading to spine, very minor bump to spine head, minute scuffs to soft leather, as is typical of sheepskin. A fine copy, nevertheless, of a seminal work on typography, in a rarely seen binding state. (Gill 21).

Februar 1931 in Heerlen/Niederlande - + 12. Februar 1989 in Gmunden/Österreich) war ein berühmter und umstrittener österreichischer Schriftsteller. 1970 erhielt Bernhard den Georg-Büchner-Preis seit den 1980er Jahren wird er international zu den bedeutendsten österreichischen und deutschsprachigen Autoren gerechnet. Rudolf, der Erzähler dieses 1982 erschienenen Buches, bereitet seit einem Jahrzehnt mit leidenschaftlichem Ernst eine größere wissenschaftliche Arbeit über seinen Lieblingskomponisten Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy vor. Nachdem er zuerst durch den Besuch seiner Schwester und dann, nach ihrem Weggang, durch die quälende Furcht, sie könnte wieder zurückkommen, am Schreiben des ersten Satzes seiner Studie gehindert wird, quält ihn die Hölle des Alleinseins. Deshalb packt er die Koffer, nimmt nur die wichtigsten seiner Schriftstücke mit, um in Palma seine Arbeit zu realisieren. In einem dortigen Cafe erinnert er sich an eine junge Frau, die ihn bei seinem letzten Palma-Aufenthalt vor eineinhalb Jahren angesprochen hatte. Sie war verzweifelt, ihr Mann hatte sich nachts vom Balkon des Hotels Paris gestürzt. Auf dem Friedhof von Palma, in einem der sieben Stock hohen Betonbestattungskästen, ist er beerdigt worden. Noch jetzt, eineinhalb Jahre danach, sieht er das verzweifelte Gesicht der Frau. Nun hat er eine Reihe von ersten Sätzen für seine Arbeit im Ohr, aber auch das Unglück der jungen Frau. Er nimmt ein Taxi, fährt zum Friedhof und findet an der Tafel neben dem Namen des Mannes nun auch den Namen der Frau: suicido erfährt er.

With 24 (including title) color lithographed illustrations by Josef Lada depicting anthropomorphic animals such as a dog, parrot, crow, peacock playing a violin, gathering foibles, dusting, and reading this very book! Josef Lada (1887-1957) is best known as the illustrator of Hasek's WWI novel, "The Good Soldier," but has a huge following with his children's books. Lower one third of spine chipped away, some cover browntoning, very good. Scarce and wonderful.

        An Essay on Typography

      London: Sheed & Ward, 1931. Gill, Eric. Octavo. iv, 121 pp. First edition. One of 500 copies signed by Eric Gill and Rene Hague and printed by Hague & Gill. This is a presentation copy, inscribed on the colophon. Illustrated with twenty-five figures, including ten type specimens and four illustrations from wood engravings by Gill. According to the bibliography, there were twenty-five copies specially bound by Donald Attwater in full Welsh sheepskin tooled in blind. The present copy appears to be one of those specially bound copies, as it is in full sheepskin with blind tooling, though with very subtle differences from the bibliographical description. Evan Gill notes, for instance, that "the blind tooling on front and back was not uniform in design" and that on the present copy is uniform. He also notes that GILL TYPOGRAPHY reads downward on the spine, where here, the author's name is not on the spine. Slight fading to spine, very minor bump to spine head, minute scuffs to soft leather, as is typical of sheepskin. A fine copy, nevertheless, of a seminal work on typography, in a rarely seen binding state. (Gill 21).

Octavo, original gilt-stamped limp vellum, red and white pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, with four color plates and 17 in-text line cuts. Near fine in the original slipcase. A Visit from St. Nicholas, more commonly known as The Night Before Christmas, is a poem first published anonymously in 1823 and later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, who claimed authorship in 1837. The poem has been called "arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American" (Edwin Burrows). For this edition of this classic, Arthur Rackham created four full-color illustrations, 17 drawings in black and white, and red and white pictorial endpapers.

Illustrated on every page with wood engravings by Gill, including leafy borders with figures, vignettes, and decorated initials. All of these are beautifully described by Colin Franklin as "affectionate and cheeky, erotic, enjoyable and relevant, decorative and explanatory, a balance of taste and eye." Bound in original morocco-backed patterned paper boards by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Rubbing and light bumps to some corners, spines of volumes 1, 2, and 4 show uniform fading. Few light scuffs to spine of volume 4. Boards are bright and spines are evenly colored. Overall, a near fine copy of a landmark press book that is seldom encountered without flaws. T.e.g. Bookplate. Opera corredata da numerose illustrazioni di Umberto Brunelleschi colorate a pochoir, alcune delle quali a piena pagina. Lievissime tracce di sporco presso il margine esterno di alcune carte. Esemplare appartenente alla tiratura di 170 copie (su un totale di 1100) stampate su carta Japon impérial, con aggiunta una suite in nero delle illustrazioni. [M236] Umberto Brunelleschi (Montemurlo, 1879 - Parigi, 1949), scenografo, pittore e illustratore, dopo aver studiato all'Accademia di Belle arti di Firenze si trasferì a Parigi nel 1901, curando scenografie per i maggiori teatri della città (Folies Bergère, Mogador, Châtelet, Marigny, Théâtre de Paris) e per numerosi altri teatri stranieri e italiani. Nel 1926 allestì una serie di balletti anche al Roxy di New York. Ricevette nel 1929 la Legion d'onore per meriti artistici. Grande successo riscossero le sue raffinate e inconfondibili illustrazioni approntate per i più noti editori francesi e belgi, in particolare quelle realizzate in ochoir. Sue opere, oltre che in numerose raccolte private italiane e straniere, sono agli Uffizi di Firenze, alle gallerie d'Arte moderna di Milano e Roma e nel museo di Nantes. I figurini da lui creati per la "Turandot" di Puccini sono conservati nel Museo teatrale alla Scala. Espose ininterrottamente alle Biennali di Venezia dal 1914 al 1938. Il "pochoir" è una tecnica di coloritura, interamente manuale, utilizzata soprattutto in Francia nei primi decenni del Novecento. Una volta creato il modello della tavola da colorare venivano realizzati degli stampini, o maschere normografiche, ritagliati e sagomati al loro interno. Si trattava di sagome, una per ogni colore necessario, ottenute da diversi materiali, come cartoncino impermeabilizzato con paraffina o sottilissime lamine di rame o zinco. La coloritura vera e propria avveniva sovrapponendo lo stampino sulla tavola da colorare e stendendo una mano di colore, a spruzzo o a pennello, in modo che il colore stesso aderisse solo sulle parti a vista senza intaccare le altre. Per la coloritura di una sola tavola potevano essere necessari fino a cento diversi passaggi, operazione che richiedeva notevole perizia e abilità. In quel periodo in Francia sorsero veri e propri atelier specializzati che, operando in collaborazione con i più importanti editori, realizzarono, nel campo dell'illustrazione del libro, dei veri e propri gioielli di arte tipografica.
