        The Unknown War

This is the sixth and final book of Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War - the U.S. first edition, in the rare dust jacket. In proposing it to his publisher, Charles Scribner, Churchill wrote: "In the previous volumes of the World Crisis I have described only in a few pages the course of events in the Eastern theatre. They have merely been the background of our main drama of the war. But now I think I might write a volume called 'The Eastern Front' [published as "The Unknown War" in the U.S.], which would be separate from but supplementary to our five volume history." Scribner published just 3,870 first printing copies in 1931. Collectors will note that for The World Crisis, the U.S. is the true first edition, as initial U.S. publication preceded the British. Here is a near-fine+ first edition, first printing in a correct first printing dust jacket. The russet cloth binding is nearly flawless with superlative spine presentation. Searching for flaws, we find only a very slight dulling at the foot of the spine corresponding to dust jacket chips. Copies this clean have become truly rare. The contents are clean and tight. The correct Scribner's "A" on the title page verso confirms first printing status. We find no spotting. The fragile color folding map at p.388 shows no tears, just a bit of toning and wear to the blank outer margin. There is a single inked owner's name and address on the ffep, the untrimmed fore edge is age-toned, and the top edge is dust soiled. The dust jacket is bright and clean with only mild toning to the spine, but neatly price clipped on the front flap and showing minor wear and losses, almost entirely confined to the lower edge of the front face and the base of the spine. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.1(V).a, Woods/ICS A31(aa), Langworth p.103.

This 1931 publication is a collection of 10 speeches by Churchill as part of his campaign against the India Bill over which he broke with his party leadership. Though his cause was lost, these speeches are considered to contain some of the finest examples of Churchill's rhetorical brilliance. The first edition is most commonly found in orange paper wraps. A much rarer version of the first edition was issued in a cased (hardcover) binding, featuring a bright orange coarse cloth. A second printing of the first edition was issued in the same month as the first printing. According to Churchill bibliographer Ronald Cohen: "Few cased copies of the second printing are known." Here is one of those very few - a hardcover first edition, second printing. Moreover, this copy retains the front flap of the extravagantly rare dust jacket. The orange cloth binding is bright and square with sharp corners. The spine is lightly soiled, but not sunned and retaining strong color. There are some holes along the hinge gutters, the largest being 1/2 inch x 1/16 inch at the rear hinge. This defect appears to be the result of thin binding cloth and is consonant with similar defects we have observed on other copies. Despite the flaw, the binding remains tight and sound. The contents are clean, bright, and tight. No spotting. No previous ownership marks. Since this copy bears an important fragment of the original dust jacket, we include a copy of a first edition India dust jacket from our reference collection. We have placed this full dust jacket copy and the original front flap inside a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A92.1.d, Woods/ICS A38(a.2), Langworth p.150.

The World Crisis, full set of six British first edition, first printings, inscribed in the month of publication in the final volume

This is a full set of six British first edition, first printings of Churchill's monumental history of the First World War, inscribed and dated in the sixth and final book in the month of publication to Harry McGowan, prominent British industrialist and Winston Churchill's friend and financial advisor.  Inked in black on the half-title in four lines is "Harry McGowan / from / Winston S. Churchill / Nov 5. 1931".  Most signed sets of The World Crisis are inscribed in the 1916-1918 volumes, which were published in 1927. (By 1927 Churchill had returned to power and was serving as the powerful Chancellor of the Exchequer). Sets inscribed in the final volume are more scarce; in 1931 Churchill found himself out of of power, out of favor, and widely regarded as a spent political force.  He had lost his fortune in the 1929 market crash, and in 1931 quit Tory leadership over India and had begun to voice the unpopular warnings about Nazi Germany that would characterize his "wilderness years" of the 1930s.  Harry Duncan McGowan (3 June 1874 – 13 July 1961) was born the same year as Churchill.  McGowan was knighted in 1918 ("for putting through efficient mergers of munitions firms") and raised to the peerage as Baron McGowan in 1937.  He was also elected to the Other Club (founded by Churchill and F.E. Smith) in 1930 - an invitation to do so being Churchill's "highest accolade".  Churchill entrusted McGowan with investment of his money and profited from McGowan's guidance before the 1929 market crash.  The month after this volume was inscribed, Churchill was struck and seriously injured by a car in New York City.  McGowan was among eight friends who purchased a car for Churchill to celebrate his recovery.  It appears that McGowan was also a genuine enthusiast for Churchill's writing.  In October 1934 McGowan wrote "it is given to few to fill such a position in Public Affairs and to write so wonderfully and so prolifically."  Churchill had many friends and associates who favored appeasement of Nazi ambitions and distanced themselves from Churchill during the 1930s.  McGowan was not among them.   During a typical speech on 26 September 1935 warning of the dangers of Nazi armament and British complacency, Churchill acknowledged the difficulty of his role, stating "No doubt it is not popular to say these things, but I am accustomed to abuse and I expect to have a great deal more of it before I have finished."  McGowan wrote to Churchill that same day, saying "Why in God's name you are not in the Cabinet, and Minister of Defence, beats me and many others."  McGowan served as Chairman of Imperial Chemical Industries for 20 years, including the Second World War and would lose his son-in-law to the war in November 1942.  The inscribed Eastern Front volume is in near-fine condition.  The binding is square, clean, and tight with bright spine gilt, nicely rounded spine, almost none of the usual scuffing to the boards, with the only flaws being some wrinkling at the spine head and hint of blistering of the cloth at the front hinge.  The contents are immaculate - notably crisp, clean, and bright with absolutely no spotting.  The only previous ownership mark is, of course, the author's inscription to the half-title, which bears some typical transfer browning from the pastedown.  The remaining five volumes are likewise near-fine with superior shelf presentation.  The bindings are bright, clean, and square with minimal wear primarily confined to extremities.  The contents are notably free of the typical spotting, with only slight minor age-toning to the page edges and light dust soiling to a few top edges.  Notably, the 1915 volume bears "H. McGowan" inked on the ffep.  The only other previous owner mark we find in the set is the decorative bookplate affixed to the 1916-1918 Part I pastedown.  This would be a collector-worthy set even without the inscription.  Bibliographic reference: A69.2(I-VI).a, Woods/ICS A31(ab), Langworth p.105.

        History of Galveston, Texas.

Alfred A. Knopf London: Alfred A. Knopf. 1931. First. First edition, preceding the American edition, and first issue, with the Knopf imprint (later issues have the Cassell imprint). Attractive engraved bookplate on the front pastedown, slightly cocked, and with a small, not too obtrusive stain on the front board, otherwise near fine, lacking the rare dustwrapper. A very attractive copy of the author's fourth book. This true first, English edition is exceptionally uncommon, and flat out rare in the jacket (which this copy lacks). Knopf published in the U.K. for only a few years, and generally produced very small editions. .

In his graphic work of the 1930's, the artist often displayed a strongly classical spirit, but his line is never static or conventional - rather subtly distorted to give a sense of freedom and movement”. Castleman pp. 30, 61, 93, 111 & 242: ”In this, Picasso's first serious attempt to follow a text and provide an alternate vision of it, he exploited his innate talent for organizing line into compositions. Even where he depicted the movement of horses, they appear as if in a classic frieze, and their activity does not rupture the picture plane”.

David McKay Company Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1931. First edition, first printing.. Fine. Yes. 8vo. (2),62pp. Original tan cloth blocked in black on the upper board; pictorial color pasteon. Nicely done black and white illustrations throughout accompanying the stories about Mickey having Traffic Trouble; going to a Birthday Party; stepping Out; and going Fishin' Around. Minnie and Pluto are featured, as well as the seldom seen Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow. The binding is fine and bright with only a few stray marks, a trace of soil and wear; it is very nice indeed. The text has a few fingering smudges and stains else is fine as well. Overall a truly lovely copy and scarce in this condition. This title seems to have been issued in three bindings: pictorial card covers, cloth spine with pictorial card boards, and full cloth with pictorial pasteon. So far as we can determine, the ful cloth binding is the scarcest of the three.
