        The Wind in the Willows

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1931. Large octavo. Original green cloth-backed grey boards, white paper label to spine printed black, spare label bound in at rear. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom green flat-backed folding case. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. An excellent, unopened copy in the jacket, just faintly toned to spine and edges of panels. Signed limited edition, number 45 of 200 large paper copies signed by both Grahame and Shepard. Wind in the Willows was first published in 1908 with only a frontispiece for illustration, and Shepard, well-known by then for his illustrations of A. A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh series, was asked to illustrate a new edition, following on from Milne's popular adaptation of the book for stage, Toad of Toad Hall. In 1931 Shepard visited Grahame at his house in Pangbourne to make sketches, and at their first meeting Grahame said to him, "I love these little people, be kind to them". Shepard's classic illustrations of anthropomorphized animals render this the most popular version of the book even today.

        Sanctuary

New York: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, 1931. First edition. Fine/Very Good +. A lovely, Fine copy of the book with a previous owner's bookplate on the front paste-down, otherwise crisp, bright and untouched. In a Very Good+ to Near Fine dust jacket with the spine panel a bit toned and two clean tears on the rear panel, without loss (the larger about an inch long). Completely unrepaired and unrestored, and presenting very well. This copy with grey pattern on the magenta end-papers, and price of $2.50 on the bottom of the front flap. Faulkner's controversial prohibition era novel was a commercial and critical success; and along with his novels The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying, Sanctuary led to his Nobel Prize for literature in 1949. "The theme of Sanctuary is the discovery of reality with the concomitant discovery of evil...instead of victory and moral vindication, [the characters] receive a stunning kind of defeat...the traditional society has given place to a modern world in which amoral power is almost nakedly present" (Brooks). A stirring exploration of the modern world and the fall of men. Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.

Maastricht, Die Halcyon Presse, 1931. Original richly gilt full morocco, signed Louis Malcorps, with a vignette (on upper and lower cover) by John Buckland Wright. 258 p. Top gilt. With 12 copper engravings by John Buckland Wright (all signed). Handset from J. van Krimpen's Romanée and printed in 140 numbered copies. Colophon signed by the publisher, A.A.M. Stols. Spine very slightly discolored, a little wear on the ribs, tiny brown stains on lower cover.l Although 125 + 15 deluxe copies of this majestic edition have been printed, according to Van Dijk (p. 134) only 56 sets of copper engravings were issued, 16 on Japanese paper and 40 on wove Pannekoek paper.         Original Photograph of David Livingstone's Last Surviving Personal Servant and Friend, Freed from Slavery by Livingstone in 1871, Matthew Wellington, His Birth Name Chemgwimbe, Together with Members of His Family, in Front of His Home.

Frere Town (near Mombasa), 1931. Original photograph of David Livingstone's last surviving personal servant and friend, freed from slavery by Livingstone in 1871, Matthew Wellington, his birth name Chemgwimbe, together with members of his family, in front of his home. Manuscript annotations to verso describe the scene, place, year, and some of the provenance. One gelatin silver print photograph mounted onto ivory cardstock matting. Image measures 20,5 x 15,5 cm. Matte measures approximately 25 x 30,5 cm. Mild age-toning to matte, otherwise in Very Good Condition, a rare photograph, suitable for framing. Provenance: "Given to W. McGregor & Isabel Roos, who organised an appeal, in Britain for funds to support Matthew Wellington in his old age." The elderly man seated in the forefront of this image is Chemgwimbe, born circa 1840-1846 into a Yao tribe, taken from his native village as a youth and sold into slavery in exchange for a roll of cloth. While onboard a Portuguese ship, having been sold again to an Arab slave trader, he and the others in captivity, were liberated by the British cruiser Thetis. He was placed under the care of the Church Missionary Society, and through this organization, he ultimately became a faithful and leading servant of David Livingstone, being one of the men who persevered and risked their lives to transport the explorer's body to the coast, so that his final resting place would be in England. After his rescue, Chemgwimbe adopted the English name Matthew Wellington, by which he better known today. He outlived Livingstone by some sixty years, but contributed greatly to the same missionary society. He died in 1935 in Frere Town, where the present photograph was taken only four years before. The present photograph was taken after Wellington received delivery of a proper hospital-type bed and other simple furnishings, so that he could live his final few years with some degree of comfort and dignity. This image does not appear in online sources, and a general search of institution libraries produces no findings. A scarce image which seems to be unpublished, perhaps a one-off, this appears to be the only known copy of this photograph.. Photo.

[Photo Album]: 1930s New York Skyline

, 1931. 1931. Near Fine. Oblong small quarto. Measuring 11" x 8.25". Cord-tied paper over boards. 53 gelatin silver images most measuring around 4.25" x 3.5" and mounted with corners, one or two to the page, with a few a bit larger. Uncaptioned (we took a couple of the images out of the corners and could find no information on the backs, but were unwilling to do so with all of them). Overall fine. While the photographer is unknown we can date the images to 1931 based on the scaffolding seen around the Waldorf-Astoria Towers in several photos. The shots were taken from several vantage points around the city including Central Park (looking across or out from the park) and from boat in the East and Hudson Rivers. A splendid compilation of images of the New York skyline, many of the building shrouded with fog or smog, several taken at night, a few from the harbor, one with a dirigible above the city, and most of them strikingly impressionistic.

        How to Read

London: Desmond Harmsworth, 1931. 8vo. 55 pp. Original red cloth. Lightly soiled, lacks jacket. FIRST EDITION. A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY, COPIOUSLY ANNOTATED BY EDWARD SACKVILLE-WEST, 5th Baron Sackville, and with his bookplate. Nearly a third of the pages bear marks and pencilled notes by Sackville-West, and he reserves his lengthiest vitriole for the end: "The book of an averagely stupid, practically illiterate, American -- a deeply maddening book..." Elsewhere, Sackville-West marks passages as "rubbish," refers to Pound's "poor intellect", and demeans Pound's American English, as when he underlines the sentence "I rest my case." and writes "not English." Sackville-West, the cousin of Vita, wrote four autobiographical novels in the 1920s and 30s that failed to find a large audience. His work as a music critic and as biographer of Thomas de Quincey, however, made him a well known figure. His column in 'New Statesmen' championed the young Benjamin Britten and helped establish the composer's reputation in Britain. His biography of de Quincey, titled 'A Flame in Sunlight,' won the James Tate Black Memorial Prize, one of Britain's oldest literary awards. Gallup A33.

Men Who Have Influenced Me by Winston S. Churchill in The Strand Magazine, February 1931, signed by Churchill

London: George Newnes, Ltd., 1931. First edition. Magazine. This is the first published appearance of Churchill's essay in which he discusses men who influenced the course of his life, a noteworthy copy being the only we have encountered signed by Churchill. The article is prominently advertised in a red banner on the front cover of this February, 1931 edition of The Strand Magazine (Volume. LXXXI, No. 482). The article fills pages 132-141 and is generously illustrated with eight portrait images, a mix of photographs, sketches, and paintings. Churchill's signature is inked in black “Winston S. Churchill” on the upper blank margin of page 133. Condition of the magazine is very good, particularly considering the age and inherent perishability. The covers remain complete and firmly attached, the spine likewise complete with all print remaining legible. We note light wear to extremities, faint creasing to the upper front corner, and minor soiling and spotting. The contents are clean with no previous ownership marks other than Churchill's signature, and trivial spotting appears primarily confined to the page edges. The subject characters of the piece include Churchill's father, Lord Randolph Churchill, Bourke Cochran, Sir Francis Mowatt, Lord Hugh Cecil, and David Lloyd George. The net effect is something between My Early Life and Great Contemporaries, combining vital, insightful sketches of the subject personalities to glimpses into the intellectual, political, and psychological formation of the author. Equally compelling, the essay illuminates the sustaining clarity and independence that carried Churchill throughout the “Wilderness Years” of the 1930s, preceding the purpose and redemption of his wartime premiership. Churchill writes: “In broad view, large principles, a good heart, high aims, a firm faith, we may find some charts and a compass for our voyage…. As we lean over the stern of the ship and watch the swirling eddies in our wake, the most rigid and resolute of us must feel how many currents are playing their part in the movements of the vessel that bears us onwards… I select from Memory's album a few snap-shots, thumb-nail sketches or fading daguerreotypes of people who have impressed me in the past.” Provenance is the Luce family estate, this being the last of several signed items we have offered from the Luce family collection. Clare Boothe Luce (1903-1987) was a journalist, playwright, Congresswoman, ambassador and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Clare was ambitious, charming, accomplished, intelligent, and promiscuous. Such was her notoriety that in 1944, in her first term in Congress, the 41-year-old Luce was elected “Woman of the Year” by a poll of American newspaper editors, pushing Eleanor Roosevelt into a distant second place. Her life intersected on many planes with her longtime friend, Winston Churchill. She also had a tempestuous affair with Churchill's only son, Randolph, whom she met at Chartwell in the early 1930s while having an affair with Bernard Baruch." Clare was already a force in her own right when she married Henry Robinson Luce (b.1898) in 1935. They would remain married – albeit with infidelities, drama, and increasingly “scant compatibility” - until his death in 1967. Henry Luce was the influential creator of the Time-Life magazine empire. Together, "for almost three decades, the Luces were indisputably America's foremost power couple." Journalist and philanthropist Henry “Hank” Luce III (1925-2005) was the elder son of Henry Luce by his first marriage. This was acquired after the death of Henry Luce III. Not only is this the first published appearance of the article, but it is also the only appearance under this title. “Men Who Have Influenced or Impressed Me” was subsequently published in Collier's as “Philosophers and Friends” and, in 1932's Thoughts and Adventures, as the chapter titled “Personal Contacts”.
