        These Thirteen (13).

Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, New York 1931 - First edition of Faulkner's first collection of stories. Octavo, original cloth, pictorial endpapers, blue topstain. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of wear. A very sharp example. Appearing two years after The Sound and the Fury, Faulkner's These 13 was issued on September 13, 1931 while he was writing the novel Light in August. These 13 won early praise as a collection of stories that "are, for the most part, Faulkner novels in miniature," with A Rose For Emily highlighted as "one of the strongest" tales, and That Evening Sun as "perhaps the most perfect story in the collection." Faulkner is "the latest star in the American literary firmament. This collection of his short stories in unreservedly recommended" (New York Times). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Gow (1859-1936), a Scottish shipping magnate, amassed an exceptional collection of Chinese porcelain, mainly from the Kangxi period (1661-1722), which he kept at Camis Eskan, his country house in Helensburgh on Loch Lomond. The collection "gained international recognition through a series of ten articles by R. L. Hobson in Burlington Magazine and through Hobson's catalogue, which Gow published privately in a limited edition of three hundred copies in 1931 Just months after his death in 1936, an exhibition of Gow's entire collection was held at Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow. Alfred H. Caspary of New York purchased the greater part of Gow's collection of Chinese porcelain in 1937 and bequeathed more than four hundred pieces to the Philadelphia Museum of Art as the Alfred and Margaret Caspary Memorial Gift in 1955. Sotheby's auctioned the remained of Gow's Chinese collection in 1943" (Freer Sackler, online). Hobson (1872-1941) was keeper of ceramics and ethnographer at the British Museum from 1921, and keeper of oriental antiquities from 1934 to 1938. Copies of his catalogue have also been noted in red cloth and in pigskin. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

AN ESSAY ON TYPOGRAPHY. (Jacket cover title: PRINTING AND PIETY: AN ESSAY ON LIFE AND WORKS IN THE ENGLAND OF 1931, & PARTICULARLY TYPOGRAPHY)

Printed by René Hague and Eric Gill for Mssrs. Sheed & Ward, London, Pigotts 1931 - 200 x 130 mm. (8 x 5 1/4"). 2 p.l., 120, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 500 COPIES, SIGNED BY GILL AND HAGUE. Original rose-colored buckram, flat spine with gilt titling, edges untrimmed. In original printed (price-clipped) dust jacket. With author's "St. Thomas' hands" device on title page, woodcut printer's device in colophon, and several facsimiles of calligraphy in the text. Gill 21. Jacket slightly soiled, spine with a hint of darkening, and trivial creasing along the top, but an extremely good jacket with all imperfections very minor, and the volume itself in virtually mint condition. This is clearly a book to be read by typophiles, but its strongly stated opinions range widely, as is suggested by the dust jacket title ("Printing & Piety: an Essay on Life and Works in the England of 1931, & Particularly Typography"). Among other things, the book says that although "industrialism has now won an almost complete victory, the handicrafts are not killed, & they cannot be quite killed because they meet an inherent, indestructible, permanent need in human nature. . . . The two worlds can see one another distinctly and without recrimination, both recognizing what is good in the other--the power of industrialism, the humanity of craftsmanship. . . . Handicraft standards are as absurd for mechanised industry as machine standards are absurd for the craftsman. The application of these principles to the making of letters and the making of books is the special business of this book." Glaister describes our author, Eric Gill (1882-1940), as "an English craftsman, engraver, type designer, sculptor, and philosopher whose influence on contemporary book production has been profound and world wide." Gill studied lettering as a young man under Edward Johnston, then for five years beginning in 1905 designed and engraved title pages and initials for the Cranach Press. Later, he did a great deal of woodcut illustration for private press publications, especially the Golden Cockerel Press (including memorable work for the famous "Four Gospels," "Troilus and Criseyde," and "Canterbury Tales"). René Hague was Gill's son-in-law and business partner. This is clearly a book to be read by typophiles, but its strongly stated opinions range widely, as is suggested by the dust jacket title ("Printing & Piety: an Essay on Life and Works in the England of 1931, & Particularly Typography").         The Song of Life.

New York: Horace Liveright, Inc.,, 1931. Octavo. Original boards, black cloth spine with orange title label, patterned crepe paper sides. With the illustrated dust jacket. Slight rubbing and fading along board edges, partial toning to front endpapers only, an excellent copy of the book, with the scarce dust jacket surviving but in poor condition with rear joint split and chips to spine and corners, nonetheless the attractive front panel presenting nicely, and unpriceclipped. First edition, first printing, with the very scarce dust jacket, a rare presentation copy inscribed by the author in the year of publication, "with love Krishna, Nov: 14th 31", on the front free endpaper. The Song of Life is an early collection of mystical poems by Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986), a Brahmin who as a child had been selected and groomed by Theosophists and as the long-expected "World Teacher", but soon rejected the mantle and spent his life travelling the world, teaching, and writing. Not unlike Rabindranath Tagore, Krishnamurti became popular in the Western world as a conduit for ancient Eastern wisdom. He gained international fame with The First and Last Freedom, published in 1954 with a Foreword by Aldous Huxley, whom he had befriended in 1938 while living in California. Krishnamurti's earlier books are scarce, and inscribed copies are remarkably rare. This copy has the ticket of a Hollywood bookshop apparently dedicated to the guru, "Krishnamurti's Writings: 2123 Beachwood Dr. Hollywood, California".

        Wind in the Willows

Published by Methuen & Co. London; 1931. 4to. Fine. **Signed by Both Kenneth Grahame AND E. H. Shepard** Limited edition numbered 82 of just 200!This simply stunning book is in Fine condition. Tightly bound in original publisher's green cloth backed boards, with cream paper label to spine with title printed in black. There is some mild sunning to the spine and label, but otherwise the boards are clean with the only other signs of wear being marginal bumping to the spine ends and board corners and the faintest hint of toning to the edges. Inside, this beautiful book with hand-made pages is in excellent condition. There is only the faintest hint of toning to the page edges, as with the boards, but apart from this the pages are clean and bright and free from any damage or blemishes. Signed and numbered by both author and illustrator, just one year before Grahame's death, this is an incredibly rare book to become available, with it's beautiful illustrations, by the same illustrator that depicted Winnie the Pooh so timelessly. In all this is a superb copy of this wonderful classic, and is absolutely an investment for any book collector, which is sure to only gain in value as time goes by. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with any queries regarding this exceptional book.

New York: Horace Liveright, Inc., 1931 - Octavo. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

AN ESSAY ON TYPOGRAPHY. (Jacket cover title: PRINTING AND PIETY: AN ESSAY ON LIFE AND WORKS IN THE ENGLAND OF 1931, & PARTICULARLY TYPOGRAPHY)

Pigotts: Printed by René Hague and Eric Gill for Mssrs. Sheed & Ward, London, 1931. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 500 COPIES, SIGNED BY GILL AND HAGUE. René Hague was Gill's son-in-law and business partner.. 200 x 130 mm. Born in Captivity. The Story of a Girl's Escape.

Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company,, 1931. Octavo. Original cream cloth, lettered in black on spine and front board. With the striking pictorial Deco dust jacket. Maps to the endpapers. Cloth a little rubbed at the edges, endpapers lightly browned, text-block with pale toning, the jacket brittle, heavily browned at the spine, marginally chipped and separating at the folds, but largely complete, altogether remains very good. First edition of this curious pseudonymous tale, recently identified as by Wentworth (1877-1961). Ostensibly a memoir of a young woman hitchhiking from New England to California and back in the 1920s. On publication it was considered to be autobiographical - "the story of a woman's experiences during a hitchhike journey across the United States and back, together with an account of the maladjustment and lack of understanding which drove her to this step" (The New York Times, 4 May, 1931) - and has been included in more recent scholarly discussion of women travellers "on the road", "Starke's" attitudes being contrasted for instance with those of "Boxcar" Bartha Thompson (Photinos, "Transiency and Transgression in the Autobiographies of Barbara Starke and 'Boxcar' Bertha Thompson" in Women's Studies, 2006, 35, pp.657-681). Starke has been identified as Wentworth in the most recent edition of Dictionary of Pseudonyms (Adrian Room (ed.), 2010).

Der Judenspiegel. Judentum und Antisemitismus in der Weltgeschichte. Band 1 der Reihe "Kampfschriften der Obersten SA.-Führung" Bitte beachten Sie Nr. 9 unserer AGB (Druckwerke aus totalitären Staaten / 86 und 130 StGB, Jugendschutzgesetz)!

(noch zu Nr.23337:) . . . "Was hat also der nationalsozialistische Staat überhaupt gegen Juden getan? - 2.         Köpfe des Alltags: Unbekante Menschen / Everyday Heads

Berlin: Verlag Hermann Reckendorf, 1931. Light spotting to the covers at the spine heel, else near fine in limp black boards in a very good example of the scarce and fragile jacket, with shallow chipping at the head of the spine, bottom of the front panel by the flap fold, and spine heel. Very minor archival restoration present at the defects. A complete and attractive copy, quite uncommon in anything resembling a serviceable jacket.. First Edition. Quarto. Variant binding in limp boards, rather than spiral-bound. 80 plates, consisting exclusively of close-ups of heads, shot in an expressionistic style that belies the simplistic titling of the portraits. Seminal European photobook of the 30s; a highlight of the New Objectivity movement and a consensus highspot. Lerski was also a renowned filmmaker; he worked on Fritz Lang's Metropolis. (Roth 68-69; Parr / Badger, v1, 130-131; Open Book 98-99; Auer 172).
