MOUNT ZION or In Touch with the Infinite

The James Press 1931 - First edition. Original gold and blue patterned paper covered boards with title label printed in blue mounted on the front board (thought to be the primary binding). Yellow, patterned endpapers. Author's presentation copy, inscribed in verse for John Gloag on the reverse of the half title, "J.Craven Pritchard is giving a little party / Not exactly 'lowbrow' & not exactly 'arty' / For us functional folk who like beauty stark / And decorate our rooms with it in Belsize Park / To know Craven Pritchard is a pretty good scoop / He`s the live wire behind the twentieth century group / . / John Betjeman". With Gloag's ownership inscription to the front endpaper. A very good copy indeed which is bright and crisp with tanning to the spine with a little wear to its head and the beginnings of splits to the front and rear joints, but holding sound. An extremely well preserved example of a very fragile book which has invariably lost its spine. Printed in blue and brown on different coloured paper (pink, grey and turquoise) and illustrated by various hands with drawings and decorative borders. The author's first book, a characteristically florid production by Betjeman and his Oxford friend Edward James (who financed the venture). "an elaborate pastiche of outmoded styles in poetry, typography and illustration - reflects the atmosphere of Oxford in the 1920s. Many of the poems were written while Betjeman was an undergraduate." - William S. Peterson (John Betjeman A Bibliography) Betjeman and Gloag knew one another through a shared interest in Architecture, though their views often differed and were co-contributors to The Architectural Review and other periodicals. Peterson lists this binding as the 'special issue' and the more usually encountered striped 'firecracker' binding as the 'ordinary issue', however in a letter from noted Betjeman collector, Ray Carter, included with this book, he writes, "John Betjeman told me that the proper first state of Mount Zion is the copy with the floral pattern."         Quantised Singularities in the Electromagnetic Field. SS. 60-72. In: Proceedings of the Royal Society. Series A. Vol. 133.

London, Harrison, 1931.. (25,5 x 17,5 cm). "The object of the present paper is to show that quantum mechanics does not really preclude the existence of isolated magnetic poles" (Conclusion). "A hole, if there is one, would be a new kind of particle, unknown to experimental physics, having the same mass and opposite charge to an electron. We may call such a particle an anti-electron... Theory at present is quite unable to suggest a reason why there should be any differences between electron and protons" (Introduction). - Stempel auf Vorsatz und Titel. Rücken verfärbt und nachgebunden, sonst gut erhalten. - DSB 17, 228; Dalwitz-Peierls 33

        Fatal Interview

New York, London- Harper & Brothers, 1931. New York, London- Harper & Brothers, 1931 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A bright, clean first edition of Fatal Interview by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Bound in cloth with paper-covered boards, with an unclipped dust wrapper. First edition. Includes Eight ImportantModern Poets pamphlet from publishers. Edna St. Vincent Millay, 1892 1950, was an American lyrical poet and playwright and the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. She was also known for her unconventional, bohemian lifestyle and her many love affairs. She used the pseudonym Nancy Boyd for her prose work. It was after her graduation in 1917 that Millay moved to New York, living in Greenwich Village. It was at this time that she first truly attained great popularity in America. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923, for The Harp-Weaver, and Other Poems, being the first woman to be so honored for poetry. Her reputation was damaged somewhat however by poetry she wrote in support of the Allied war effort during World War II. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is some slight wear to the extremities, including some slight bumping. The dust wrapper has several small chips and closed tears. The spine panel missing, so is in two halves and there is discolouration to the front and rear panels. Internally the pages are bright and generally clean with someslight spotting to the endpapers. Overall the condition is very good, with a fair dust wrapper..

        Sissinghurst [Hand-numbered SIGNED LIMITED Edition]

The Hogarth Press, 1931. The Hogarth Press, 1931. Book. Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. This edition, set by hand at The Hogarth Press, was limited to 500 numbered copies, signed by the author. This copy is either number 154 or 184; The middle digit is difficult to decipher with complete confidence. Printed by hand by Leonard and Virginia Woolf. Consists of the poem Sissinghurst (5 pages long) bound in a sewn binding in booklet form, with stiff board covers. The boards are covered in a beige / brown marbled paper, with some green showing through the marbling in a few patches. The endpapers are also green. The main flaw with this copy is that the spine is significantly rubbed, with chips and loss and the backstrip and sewing exposed in a very narrow strip. As the spine is so slender this is not as bad as it at first sounds. Minor rubs to the corners. There is a previous owner's bookplate and date on the front endpaper. There is some very light sporadic foxing to the pages (primarily to the title page; the pages of the poem are almost free from any marks). The pages are deckle edged/ untrimmed and in very good condition. Vita and her husband, Harold Nicolson, bought Sissinghurst in 1930. The poem was composed like a letter for Vita's friend (and sometime lover) Virginia Woolf and when the Woolfs printed the poem they left out the full title of the poem, 'Sissinghurst. Thursday to V.W.' and put the 'Thursday to V.W.' on the first page of the poem instead. The Woolfs printed very little by hand - just a few other limited editions - and they gave up the hand-printing process in 1932. An early print number and a good copy of this very scarce booklet. Vita Sackville-West [1892-1962]; Hogarth Press; Bloomsbury interest..

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT: A CAREER IN PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRACY.

Bobb-Merrill Co., (1931)., (New York): - First edition. INSCRIBED, "To Hazel W. Howes, With the sincere regards and thanks of Franklin D. Roosevelt / June 1932." A nice association as her husband, William Washington Howes, served under Roosevelt as Second and First Assistant Postmaster General from 1933 to 1940 (he brought airmail service to the Midwest). Previously, he was a member of the South Dakota Senate, Chairman of the South Dakota Democratic Party and a member of the Democratic National Committee. He is reported to have been very influential in helping FDR win the Midwest. The inscription to Mrs. Howes is nicer than the one FDR wrote for her husband in his copy of this same book (we also handled that copy). Near fine with offset near inner hinges; in a lightly soiled dust jacket with a thumb-nail size chip at top of back cover and minor edgewear but no other chipping.         Buckingham Palace

London - Country Life Limited, 1931. London - Country Life Limited, 1931 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of Harold Clifford Smith's extensive book on Buckingham Palace. Bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering and clipped dust wrapper. First edition. Harold Clifford Smith (1887-1960) was Keeper of the Department of Woodwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He was a specialist in the study of old English furniture, but he was also a writer of wide historical and antiquarian knowledge on the decorative arts in general. Buckingham Palace, Its Furniture, Decoration and History, with introductory chapters by Christopher Hussesy, was first published by Country Life in 1931. In writing the book, Clifford Smith had the assistance of Queen Mary who supplied him with much information and herself corrected the proofs. In 1937 the book was republished at a lower price in a Coronation edition. Condition: The binding is firm. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including some bumping and fading. The dustwrapper has several closed tears and chips, as can be seen in the photograph above. Internally the pages are generally bright with some mild spotting throughout. Overall the condition is very good with good dustwrapper..

Constitution of Atomic Nuclei and Radioactivity

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1931. Oxford: Clarendon Press,, 1931. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Folding chart of the periodic table, diagrams and charts throughout the text. Very lightly rubbed at the tips, slight fading to head of spine. An excellent copy in the rubbed and tanned jacket with some minor creases, nicks, and short splits. First edition, first impression. Review copy with the publisher's slip loosely inserted. George Gamow (1904–1968) made his first major contribution to physics in 1928 with his theory of alpha particle decay, explaining how the atomic nucleus emits an alpha particle (two protons and two neutrons) and transforms into an atom of lower atomic weight, a significant problem in understanding radioactivity. The present volume is aimed "to give as complete an account as possible of our present experimental and theoretical knowledge of the nature of atomic nuclei" (preface). A comprehensive and under appreciated work, it ends intriguingly with Gamow's work on the Artificial Transformation of Nuclei. Uncommon in the dust jacket.

Typed Letter, Signed, To Spingarn, On His Personal Letterhead

, 1931 1931. Darrow Discusses an Issue Concerning the Publication of His Autobiography Darrow, Clarence [1857-1938]. [Spingarn, Arthur (1878-1971)]. [Typed Letter, Signed, To Spingarn, On His Personal Letterhead, October 24, 1931, With Five-Line Holograph Postscript, Signed "D"]. Single 10-1/2" x 7-1/4" sheet. Some toning, two horizontal fold lines, otherwise fine * Darrow discusses a sensitive issue concerning the placement of The Story of My Life, then in manuscript. He is looking for a publisher and is troubled by the interest shown by his former publisher, Horace Liveright. Darrow wants advice on the best way to push him away. Spingarn was contacted because he assisted Darrow with a related issue. In the previous month he negotiated Darrow's release from a contract with Liveright. (Darrow sought this release because he wasn't happy with the promotional efforts for, or sales of, its edition of Farmington.) The holograph postscript refers to the article "Why the 18th Amendment Cannot Be Repealed," which appeared in the November 1931 issue of Vanity Fair: "I have a story...on what one can and can not do to get rid of prohibition. We can not repeal the 18th Amendment." Spingarn, an attorney, was a civil rights pioneer and president of the NAACP from 1940 to 1965. He helped coordinate the defense team for Dr. Ossian Sweet, which was led by Darrow. See the letter of September 25, 1931 to Spingarn in Darrow, In the Clutches of the Law: Clarence Darrow's Letters, Ed. Randall Tietjen 425.
