        Zwei Affen.

        A TRILOGY MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA

New York: Horace Liveright, Inc., 1931.. Three volumes. Small quarto. Plain brown wrappers, titled in manuscript. Slight tanning and use at edges, one corner slightly chipped, small nicks at spine crowns, else very nice. Uncorrected original page proofs of the first edition, text printed on rectos only. The configuration in three parts underscores the emphasis in this format on the "trilogy", as does the emphasis implicit in the title- leaves: in the published form, the placement of 'A Trilogy' and 'Mourning Becomes Electra' were reversed. Uncommon in this format.

The Exile Mighty Modern Drama of Negro Life All Talking with a Cast of Colored Stars. Handbill "8 7/8" x 5 7/8"

      - The only recorded copy is at Temple University. Light edgewear not extending to text or photographic scenes from the film. Such handbills also known as heralds would be handed out on street corners in the black communities in major urban centers. Their ephemeral nature is why so few survived. The 1931 film is the first black "talkie" and deals with racism in Chicago where wealthy whites abandon a mansion in an early version of "White flight"; the beautiful servant girl (Eunice Brooks) takes possession of it and becomes a femme fatale. Her would be lover escapes her wiles, buys a ranch in South Dakota, falls in love with an apparent "white" woman who, in reality, has just passed for white. The story comes back to night clubs, jazz, the Cotton Club Fast Steppers and many other facets of black life in the fast lane.

An exlibrary bound in buckram with gold stamped lettering on the spine panel, institutional bookplate, library pocket and remains of check-out sheet in rear, and several institutional notations internally. The article contains 21 figures, including 9 photographs of portions of the machine (unlike Babbage's early designs for calculators, this design was actually built and in service at MIT). The article goes on to detail the mechanical challenges, underlying philosophy, and methods used by the device. Vannevar Bush 'was MIT's first Vice President and Dean of Engineering from 1932-1939. While at MIT he invented the differential analyzer, an analog device that was the most powerful computing machine prior to the electronic digital computer...The differential analyzer proved so useful that copies were built at the University of Pennsylvania, the General Electric Plant in Schenectady, New York, and the Ballistics Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground...' (see Origins of Cyberspace 244). This volume also includes articles by Zworykin on photocell theory and practice, earthquakes, the Bartol Research Foundation and many other articles.         ABOUT ZIONISM. Speeches and Letters by Professor Albert Einstein. [With an Original unrecorded photograph of Albert Einstein taken in Pasadena (February 1932) laid in].

Macmillan, New York 1931 - SIGNED AND DATED BY ALBERT EINSTEIN. A Very Good+ hardback First Edition First Printing with foxing top, fore edges, toning, foxing endpapers. Owner stamp above Dr. Einstein's signature. In a Very Good Dust Jacket with edge wear, tape, mild soil, mild chips. A Rare Signed volume all the more so in elusive Dust jacket. Only one copy has appeared at auction over the last 35 years. A centerpiece of an Einstein or modern Judaica collection. 8vo. 94 pp. Included is an original photographic print (8.5 by 6.0 cm) of Dr. Einstein taken in California, stamped on the verso "Pacific Photo Studio, Pasadena California" and dated "February 1932". The photograph and Dr. Winstein's signature can thus be precisely dated to the period of time he spent at the California Institute of Technology in December 1931 and early 1932 before returning to Germany for the last time in March 1932. This is an unrecorded photograph. It is not in the American Institute of Physics catalog "Images of Einstein" (1979). While Dr. Einstein is, of course, best known for his work in physics, his support of Zionism has long and deep roots. The current volume well articulates his backing the establishment of a center for Jewish life in the British mandate of Palestine. However, for some time he resisted the ides of a separate Jewish state. He wanted to see and agreement between Jews and Arabs by which they would live in peace in a single Middle East entity. After World War II and the holocaust his view changed. He supported the establishment of the Jewish Stated of Israel. Indeed, in 1952 with the death of Israel's President Chaim Wiezmann he was asked to become President of Israel but declines the invitation. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        India

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1931. First edition, first printing. Paperback. Very good. This is the first edition, first printing, in the softcover ("wraps") binding.  India is a collection of 10 speeches by Churchill as part of his campaign against the India Bill over which he broke with his party leadership. Though his cause was lost, these speeches are considered to contain some of the finest examples of Churchill's rhetorical brilliance.  Churchill did not adopt an early progressive attitude toward relinquishing control over the crown jewel of Britain's colonial empire.  However, it is instructive to remember that many of Churchill's dire warnings about Indian independence proved prophetic.  Churchill had warned that too swift a British withdrawal from India would lead to bloody civil war and sectarian strife between Hindus and Muslims, Hindu domination, and destabilizing political balkanization of the subcontinent.  All came to pass and much persists to this day.  Here is the striking but fragile orange wraps binding of the first edition, first printing.  Condition is very good given the perishable nature of the edition.  This copy is notable for a highly complete binding with only fractional loss at the spine ends and corners.  The binding remains square and tight and firmly attached, the spine shows no vertical creasing, and the copy appears unread.  Nonetheless, the orange wraps are somewhat dulled and soiled, with some staining, particularly at the fore edge.  The front cover shows a small scuff just below the price leaving a tiny hole, and bears some wear and soiling.  We find no previous ownership marks.  Spotting is light, appearing confined to the first and final few pages and page edges.  The binding is protected with a removable, clear mylar cover.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A92.1.c, Woods/ICS A38(a.1), Langworth p.150.

In the rare and wonderful original dust jacket, which depicts Dracula's ominous eyes looming over a sleeping woman. In Good overall condition, with clean pages and sound binding. Previous owner's name penned on front free end paper, then partially erased. The orange cloth shows edge wear and light soiling but remains attractive. The jacket has chipping and loss, with creases, short tears, rubbing and some overall wear. Wear along the folds. The jacket has been strengthened from the verso with tape along the folds. Rare in original jacket.

Die Werke der Maria Sibylle Merian. Neunter Druck der Dudelsackpresse.

Meissen, Selbstverlag, 1931.. Erste (1.) und einzige Ausgabe. ORIGINALAUSGABE.

THE NEW MOVEMENT IN THE THEATRE. A SURVEY OF RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN EUROPE AND AMERICA.

London, Batsford, 1931.FIRST EDITION 1931. With an Introduction by R.H. PACKMAN and a Foreword by EDWARD GORDON CRAIG. Folio, 385 x 285 mm, 15 x 11¼ inches, illustrated with 128 plates, 152 illustrations in colour, and 392 in monochrome, mostly costumes and theatre sets and scenery, original publisher's cream cloth, brown lettering to spine and upper cover, chipped and damaged remains of colour decorated glassine dustwrapper. Staining to edges of lower cover, a few other small marks to cloth, inner paper hinges cracked, otherwise a very good copy. Moussinac's pictorial survey is divided into the different countries of Europe and the United States, and includes set and costume designs by Picasso, Jean Hugo, Leger, Prampolini, George Grosz, A. Exter, Nivinsky, Norman Bel Geddes, Paul Nash and others, as well as illustrations from the actual productions. The defective dustwrapper was produced by applying the coloured design directly onto a thin sheet of celluloid which has now become brittle. A very heavy book that will require extra postage. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

        INSPIRATION (1931)

USA 1931 - Vintage original 14 x 22" (56 x 71 cm.) window card poster, USA. Greta Garbo, Robert Montgomery, Lewis Stone, Marjorie Rambeau, Karn Morley, dir: Clarence Brown; MGM. Wonderful period deco font and layout presents the great Greta Garbo above the title of this melodramatic romance. A lovely portrait of her with leading man Robert Montgomery and the tagline "A Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ALL TALKING Picture" brought audiences into the theatre in 1931. It was Garbo's third talking film and people were excited to hear her speak. Beautifully photographed by William Daniels (Garbo's favorite) in the German style of the time, it contains one of her most underrated subtle performances. It was based on the Alphonse Daudet novel Sapho (release was delayed as a lawsuit ensued, the novel being public domain in the U.S. but not in Europe). It told the story of Yvonne, a woman who has loved many times, and her unfortunate romance with a young art student. Paper-backed, poster originally had one fold line and was trimmed at top, border area has been skillfully filled in, overall really nice, NEAR FINE.

        Zolotoi telenok [The Golden Calf]

Berlin: Kniga i stsena, 1931. Octavo (20 x 14.5 cm). Original printed wrappers with an attractive typographic design in green and yellow; [4], 5-200, [1] pp. Wrappers lightly dust-soiled; old bookstore label partly removed; small owner signature to title; else very good. The rare first edition of Ilf and Petrov's beloved masterpiece of Soviet satire, The Golden Calf, published by an emigre publishing house in Berln even before it was serialized in the Soviet journal "30 Days" and well before the first Soviet book edition in 1933. Along with Zamiatin's "My" and Bulgakov's "Master and Margarita," "The Golden Calf" (and its prequel, "The Twelve Chairs") stand among the most important -- and popular -- Russian satirical novels of the twentieth century. Together, Ilf and Petrov created the character Ostap Bender, a picaresque rogue con man whose witty pronouncements were so popular that they are still casually quoted in everyday conversation to this day. Curiously, Bender's behavior hardly fit the requirements of an emerging communist society: "In the new collective society Ostap is an arch-individualist. Uninterested in building socialism, he is in search of a fortune: the diamonds hidden in one of a set of twelve chairs in the first novel; in the money of a secret millionaire in the second [...] He roams over the vast geographical spaces of Soviet Russia, deploying ingenuous ways of relieving people of money" (Jones and Feuer Miller 1998). In the eys of the Soviet authorities, Ilf and Petrov's satire was making light of old bourgeois traits and habits, but, with good reason, numerous emigre critics read the work as a statement about the absurdity of the Soviet Regime itself. Nevertheless, the writer duo was never subjected to repressions and, as Lesley Milne writes, "the Soviet literary establishment proved able to accomodate them as licensed jesters." Not in Savine.
