Harold Clifford Smith (1887-1960) was Keeper of the Department of Woodwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum. A comprehensive and under appreciated work, it ends intriguingly with Gamow's work on the Artificial Transformation of Nuclei. Uncommon in the dust jacket.

        Essays in Persuasion

London: MacMillan & Company, 1931.. London: MacMillan & Company, 1931. First edition of Keynes' first volume of collected essays. Octavo, original green cloth. Near fine in an excellent price-clipped dust jacket. Rare in the original dust jacket and in this condition. The essays in this volume show Keynes's attempts to influence the course of events by public persuasion over the period of 1919-40. In the light of subsequent history, 'Essays in Persuasion' is a remarkably prophetic volume covering a wide range of issues in political economy. In articles on the Versailles Treaty, Keynes foresaw all too clearly that excessive Allied demands for reparations and indemnities would lead to the economic collapse of Germany. In Keynes's essays on inflation and deflation, the reader can find ideas that were to become the foundations of his most renowned treatise, 'The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money. With startling accuracy Keynes forecast the economic fluctuations that were to beset the economies of Europe and the United States and even proposed measures which, if heeded at the time, might have warded off an era of world-wide depression.

        Salammbo

NewYork - Tudor Publishing Co., 1931. NewYork - Tudor Publishing Co., 1931 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Salammb (1862) is a historical novel by Gustave Flaubert. This edition is translated from the French with an introduction by Ben Ray Redman and isillustrated and decorated by Mahlon Blaine. Salammb is set in Carthage during the 3rd century BCE, immediately before and during the Mercenary Revolt which took place shortly after the First Punic War. Flaubert's main source was Book I of Polybius's Histories. It was not a particularly well-studied period of history and required a great deal of work from the author, who enthusiastically left behind the realism of his masterpiece Madame Bovary for this tale of blood and thunder. Gustave Flaubert (1821- 1880) was a French writer who is counted among the greatest novelists in Western literature. He is known especially for his first published novel, Madame Bovary (1857), for his Correspondence, and for his scrupulous devotion to his art and style. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally, smart but with minor wear to extremities and the odd very slight mark. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD.

Cuban Cookery. Gastronomic Secrets of the Tropics, with an Appendix on Cuban Drinks

Havana, Cuba: Molina & Cia, [1931]. Havana, Cuba: Molina & Cia, [1931]. Octavo, 158 pages. Illustrated with line drawings by Conrado Massaguer. A later but early edition of the first Cuban cookbook printed in English. The first was published by Editorial Hermes, and had eight fewer pages. De Baralt was the American wife of a Cuban doctor who moved to Havana around the turn of the century. She clearly felt at home there, as she refers to Cuban food as "our" cuisine throughout. She also exhibits a notable understanding of other world cuisines in her introduction, in which she tries to locate Cuban cooking relative to others - favorably of course. The book contains an appendix of fifty-three cocktails and refrescos, including what is the first printed recipe for a Cuban mojito, here called a 'Cuban Mojo'. The mojito is widely considered to have appeared and become popular in Cuba in the 1920s, but this is its first appearance in print. Spine slightly cocked and a bit of light soiling to the publisher's black cloth with a printed red pasted down label to the front board, otherwise fine. [OCLC locates 7 copies; Noling Beverage Literature, page 50]. Rum Cocktail (Cuban Mojo)& & In medium size glass put :& One teaspoonful sugar& Juice and rind of a green lime& Sprig of mint& One jigger Bacardi Rum& Several pieces of ice& Fill glass with soda water.& Serve with a long spoon.&
