The Beginning of the World from the Point of View of Quantum Theory (+) The Evolution of the Universe.

Three small white paper label pasted on to spine. Two library stamps to title-page and first index page. A small tear to top of spine. Very slight wear to extremities, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. Rare in the publisher's binding. [Vol. 127:] Pp. 704-6; [Vol. 128:] P. 706.. First printing of Lemaître's seminal paper, in which the concept of "The Big Bang" was introduced for the first time. With this theory, Lemaître presented the general idea of an evolutionary, finite-age universe, and he combined quantum physics and cosmology for the first time when stating that the expansion [of the universe] started from a "primeval atom". 1931 became Lemaître's "annus mirabilis", as the present paper catapulted him out of obscurity and into fame. "In 1931 Lemaître moved from obscurity to fame. He suggested that the world might have originated from just one quantum of enormous energy and later the same year he developed this scenario into the hypothesis of the primeval atom. According to Lemaître's "fireworks theory of evolution" the world started as a super-radioactive disintegration of the primeval atom. During the 1930's he published several expositions of this idea, the first example of a big bang cosmology." (DSB)"The way in which Lemaître phrased his letter to Nature reveals a close similarity to contemporary discussions among quantum theoreticians and suggest that the source of his primeval universe should be found as much in a quantum theoretical as in a cosmological tradition. It seems that the source of Lemaître's big-bang hypothesis should be sought in a combination of an empirical fact, the existence of radioactive substances, and a theoretical insight, quantum-mechanical indeterminacy. As he later explained, the idea arose when he sought about the conditions for radioactive elements still being with us. Didn't the very long half-lives of these elements, uranium and thorium, indicate that all elements had once been radioactive and that our present world was the nearly burned-out result of a previous radioactive universe." (Kragh, Cosmology and Controversy, P. 47)

A Homogeneous Universe of Constant Mass and Increasing Radius Accounting for the Radial Velocity of Extra-Galactic Nebulae (+) The Expanding Universe.

London, The Royal Astronomical Society, 1931. 8vo. Bound in contemporary full blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society", Vol. 91. Entire issue offered. A very fine and unmarked copy. Pp. 483-90; Pp. 490-501. (Entire volume: (10), (2), 1023 pp].. First English edition, with commentary by Eddington, of Lemaitre's seminal 1927-paper (A HOMOGENEOUS UNIVERSE...) , which constitutes probably the most important contribution to cosmology in the 20th century. Here he introduced for the first time the idea of the expanding universe. With this English translation: "Lemaître's theory was discovered by the international community of astronomers. [...], the Belgian priest suddenly rose to become a celebrated innovator of science". (Kragh, Cosmology and Controversy). Initially the paper was published in Annales de la Société Scientifique de Bruxelles under the title "Un Univers homogène de masse constante et de rayon croissant rendant compte de la vitesse radiale des nébuleuses extragalactiques". Unfortunately, the paper had little impact because the journal in which it was published was not widely read by astronomers outside of Belgium and it was not until 1931 with the present translation that Lemaître's groundbreaking paper became internationally recognized. "In 1925, on his return to Belgium, [Lemaitre] became a part-time lecturer at the Catholic University of Louvain. He then began the report which would bring him international fame, published in 1927 in the Annales de la Société Scientifique de Bruxelles (Annals of the Scientific Society of Brussels), under the title "Un Univers homogène de masse constante et de rayon croissant rendant compte de la vitesse radiale des nébuleuses extragalactique"... In this report, he presented his new idea of an expanding Universe (he also derived Hubble's law and provided the first observational estimation of the Hubble constant) but not yet that of the primeval atom. Instead, the initial state was taken as Einstein's own finite-size static universe model. Unfortunately, the paper had little impact because the journal in which it was published was not widely read by astronomers outside of Belgium. At this time, Einstein, while not taking exception to the mathematics of Lemaître's theory, refused to accept the idea of an expanding universe; Lemaître recalled him commenting "Vos calculs sont corrects, mais votre physique est abominable" ("Your math is correct, but your physics is abominable").Eddington published a long commentary on Lemaître's 1927 article, in which he described the latter as a "brilliant solution" to the outstanding problems of cosmology. Lemaître's THE EXPANDING UNIVERSE is a commentary to this

THE EUROPEAN CARAVAN AN ANTHOLOGY OF THE NEW SPIRIT IN EUROPEAN LITERATURE ... PART I FRANCE, SPAIN, ENGLAND AND IRELAND [all published]

New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1931.. xviii,577pp. Cloth. About fine, in very good, price- clipped dust jacket with two short edge tears, a thin pain drop on the spine panel, a shallow chip at the crown of the spine, and a few smaller, internally mended chips and edge tears. First edition of this noble experiment, introducing to the general public the rich panorama of postwar literary activity on the continent, in England and in Ireland, much of the material translated here for the first time. The editors paid considerable attention to dada and super-realism in France, and works (several for the first time in book form) by Beckett, Joyce, Cunard, H.D., Auden, Cunard, Woolf, Aldington, et al, represent the English language. George Reavey served as one of the co- editors, and special introductions were contributed by several distinguished hands. The publisher went out of business in 1932, which may account for the fact that no second volume appeared, as well as for the fact that this title is somewhat more uncommon than many of its contemporaries of generic similarity.         Relação do principio, e origem da nobilissima, e antiquissima familia do nome, e appellido D'Aguiar de que descende per linha direita legitima masculina Damiam d'Aguiar Ribeiro do conselho d'El Rey nosso Senhor.[Lisbon?], [completed 1609 or soon after]. 27×19×3 cm Illuminated manuscript in black ink on calf vellum, with a marginal note in red ink. The text block measures 17×11.5 cm. With the title topped by the Aguiar heraldic eagle in numerous colours on a gold background, 2 full-page coats of arms and 3 decorated initials in several colours and gold. The text is written in a large and very narrow formal pointed-pen italic, with extensive passages in an upright pen-drawn hand resembling roman printing types with capitals in a Roman inscriptional style. Further with decorated paragraph marks and elaborate leaf ornaments. Contemporary green velvet over beechwood(?) boards. Rebacked in green morocco.

For Gonçalves Neto: J. Cardoso Gonçalves, Umaq jóia da iluminura Portuguesa, 1931; Thieme & Becker XIV, p. 366. A superbly calligraphed illuminated manuscript in Portuguese, with passages in Latin, giving extremely detailed genealogical and heraldic information about the family of Damião de Aguiar Ribeiro (1535-1618), who wrote the text himself and no doubt commissioned the present calligraphic manuscript. De Aguiar was a member of the Lisbon Council of King Philip II of Portugal (King Philip III of Spain) and had both the funds and the connections to enlist the best scribe and illuminator to execute the manuscript for the glory of his family. The illumination and arms have been attributed to Estevão Gonçalves Neto (d. Vizéu 1627). The calligraphy is stunning, making the book a masterpiece of the Portuguese scribal art. Whether the present scribe took his forms directly from the papal scribe Giovan Francesco Cresci in Rome, or from one of his Spanish or Portuguese followers we do not know, but the large narrow pointed-pen italic used for most of the text shows his influence, as does the upright hand and the Roman capitals. With an occasional minor smudge, but still in fine condition. The binding has been rebacked, and shows some wear, but remains structurally sound.

        India

London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1931. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Good plus. This is the first edition, first printing, first state of the hardcover binding with horizontal spine title. India is a collection of 10 speeches by Churchill as part of his campaign against the India Bill, over which he broke with his party’s leadership. Though his cause was lost, these speeches are considered to contain some of the finest examples of Churchill's rhetorical brilliance. Churchill spent formative time as a young 19th century cavalry officer fighting on the northwest Indian frontier, about which he would write his first published book. He did not adopt an early progressive attitude toward relinquishing control over the crown jewel of Britain's colonial empire. Nonetheless, it is instructive to remember that many of Churchill's dire warnings about Indian independence proved prophetic. Churchill had warned that too swift a British withdrawal from India would lead to bloody civil war and sectarian strife between Hindus and Muslims, Hindu domination, and destabilizing political balkanization of the subcontinent. All these predictions came to pass and, to a considerable extent, persist today. The first edition is most commonly found in orange paper wraps. However, there was also a hardcover binding, itself with two variants - the first with the spine title reading horizontally, followed by a hardcover variant with the spine title reading vertically as it does on the wraps issues. Per Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen (Vol. I, A92, pp. 372-375) the horizontal title binding preceded the vertical title variant. Of course the hardcovers are quite considerably rarer than their more common wraps counterparts. Here is the first edition, first printing hardcover with horizontal spine title. This copy is in good plus condition. The binding is tight and square with only light wear to extremities, but faded, soiled, and stained. The contents are in quite good condition, bright with only light spotting which appears limited to the prelims and page edges. We find a very faded, mostly illegible fragment of what appears to be a previous owner name on the front and rear pastedowns. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A92.1.a, Woods/ICS A38(a), Langworth p.150.

Panseron's price list offered copies bound in "bazanne", so the present copy may be in the publisher's own binding.

De Ganay 111 (description based on a 1931 sale catalogue) & 113; KVK & WorldCat (4 copies with 4 vols. but reporting only 28 plates; 1 copy with vols. 1-3; a few single vols.); not in Springer; Fowler; Berlin Kat. Fine set of the rarest of great French gardening books by Pierre Panseron (ca. 1736-1787), a well-known Paris architect and Royal engraver. The Recueil de jardinage is divided into many smaller parts, which were also sold separately. Panseron had studied with the great French architect Jacques François Blondel and had been building inspector for the Prince de Conti and professor of drawing at the Royal Military Academy before he settled at Paris as a private tutor of architecture and drawing. He published a number of architectural and gardening atlases, whose full catalogues are added to volume four, both in letterpress and on engraved leaves. All plates were designed and engraved by Panseron. The plates of the present works are printed on strong paper with slightly bluish cast, some of it by Arthaud in Auvergne. They present a rich and wonderful survey of garden landscaping, art and architecture in France in the second half of the 18th century, when English and Chinese gardens were in vogue. The bindings show surface damage and some professional restorations, but most of the plates are in fine condition. An important garden publication of the utmost rarity.

Substantive Autograph Letter Signed, in French, on National Museum, "Laboratoire de Physique" stationery, Paris, April 19, 1931

      - He likely writes to fellow physicist, Aimé Auguste Cotton (1869-1951) and sends regards to his wife. In full, "Dear Sir, my Colleague, I am very grateful to you for presenting my message to the Academy, and I thank you for your remarks about the book. It would seem to me that one could posit: rotational power along the optical axis of certain uni-axis crystals, near the absorption bands, subject to the action of a magnetic field normal to that axis. We can talk about this tomorrow, by the way, because I will be coming to the meeting. If you have a few moments, I will be happy to share the observations with you that I have made over the past few days and that will render the properties of this effect more precise. Please give my kindest regards to Madame Cotton. Respectfully, Jean Becquerel."

        Zwei Affen.
