[Photo Album]: 1930s New York Skyline

1931. Near Fine. Oblong small quarto. Measuring 11" x 8.25". Cord-tied paper over boards. 53 gelatin silver images most measuring around 4.25" x 3.5" and mounted with corners, one or two to the page, with a few a bit larger. Uncaptioned (we took a couple of the images out of the corners and could find no information on the backs, but were unwilling to do so with all of them). Overall fine. While the photographer is unknown we can date the images to 1931 based on the scaffolding seen around the Waldorf-Astoria Towers in several photos. The shots were taken from several vantage points around the city including Central Park (looking across or out from the park) and from boat in the East and Hudson Rivers. A splendid compilation of images of the New York skyline, many of the building shrouded with fog or smog, several taken at night, a few from the harbor, one with a dirigible above the city, and most of them strikingly impressionistic.

Scientific Forecasting. Its Methods and Application to Practical Business and to Stock Market Operations.

New York, Greenberg, [1931]. 8vo. Original plum ribbed cloth, spine lettered in gilt (oxidized, as usual); pp. vii, 271, graphs in the text; minimal rubbing to extremities, very light spotting to endpapers; a near-fine copy. A beautiful copy of the first edition of the early and rare classic on investment and hedge funds. 'The long-forgotten Karl Karsten whose Scientific Forecasting of 1931 laid the foundation for the first hedge fund, talking of "the hedge" principle to describe his own long/short style of portfolio management' (Financial Times April 27, 2007). Karsten, originally a statistician by trade, not only ran his own hedge fund but foresaw the role of computers in modern finance, and in his own work aimed at creating models using the tide predicting machine at Greenwich.

ESPERANTO POETRY: STRE?ITA KORDO [A TAUT STRING].

Budapest: Literatura Mondo . 1931 - 8°, 189 pp., [3], original blue soft cover with printed title (Very Good, cover slighly stained, cancelled stamps of an Esperanto Society on the covers, title page and on some text pages, spine with tiny tears and loss of paper). An uncommon first edition of poems, originally written in Esperanto by a Hungarian author Káláman Kalocsay (1891-1976) was published in Budapest in 1931 and is considered one of the finest collections of original Esperanto poetry. Kálmán Kalocsay (1891-1976) was a Hungarian Esperantist poet, editor and translator, who had a major influence on Esperanto before WWII, especially in Hungary. He was also known by his name in Esperanto version Kolomano Kalo?ajo, as well as various pseudonyms: C.E.R. Bumy, Kopar, Alex Kay, K. Stelov, Malice Pik and Peter Peneter. This collection of songs, Stre?ita Kordo is considered by many Esperantists as one of the finest collections of original Esperanto poetry. The book was published by Kalocsay's Esperanto publishing house Literatura mondo, based in Budapest, which was since 1922 publishing an Esperanto magazine with the same title. During WWII the magazine and the publishing house were closed, because the Nazis forbade publications in Esperanto. The first magazine after the war was published in 1947. A reprint of the book was made in 1978. We could only trace a few examples of the first edition from 1931 in libraries worldwide.

Signed original photograph of Gandhi on board SS Rajputana.

1931. Original wallet-sized photograph (73 x 48 mm), framed and glazed (overall 215 x 260 mm), double sided-mount displaying Gandhi's signature on verso of photograph, facsimile of inscription mounted alongside image on recto. In excellent condition. A fine original, candid image of the great Indian statesman, signed on verso "M. K. Gandhi 10-9-31", captured on the deck of SS Rajputana, wearing his dhoti and standing alongside Captain H. M. Jack of the P&O Line. We believe the man behind the lens to be the distinguished Associated Press journalist and camerman James A. Mills (1883-1942), "a tall, handsome, soft-spoken man who had been appointed chief of bureau in Moscow in 1924… He travelled to the Balkans, Ethiopia, the Near East, India, Manchuria, northwestern China, and across the Russian steppes… He covered Mohandas K. Gandhi's struggle for independence in India in the 1930s, winning Gandhi's favour by treating him as an 'intensely appealing human character, rather than as a fanatic or freak'" (Breaking News: How the Associated Press Has Covered War, Peace, and Everything Else, 2007, p. 266). Mills was the first journalist to conduct a filmed interview with Gandhi, on 30 April 1931 (released in cinemas by Fox Movietone News). For his own personal use Mills preferred Filmo and Eyemo movie cameras and wrote a piece entitled "Filming Mahatma Gandhi" for Filmo Topics magazine (January 1932) in which he revealed that "Mr. Gandhi took a solemn vow, some thirty years ago, that he would never pose for a photograph, a painting, sculpture, or any other artificial reproduction of himself… It was no easy task for a photographer to break down this formidable barrier of prejudice on Mr. Gandhi's part toward being filmed. But I accomplished it by simply 'taking the bull (or shall I say lamb) by the horns' and filming the Mahatma without his permission… Until he faced my battery of still and motion-picture cameras, I had never known Mr. Gandhi to 'look at the lens'. To be sure, he had appeared in photographs before, but these pictures were taken 'on the fly', so to speak, and without Mr. Gandhi's consent, and never once did he look at the lens. Invariably he kept his eyes looking down or to the side. On the steamer, between Bombay and Marseilles, however, he actually looked squarely into the Cooke lenses of my cameras". The Associated Press photographic archive shows an image clearly taken at the same moment as ours, with Captain Jack (hands on hips this time) posing alongside Gandhi. Gandhi's signature dates from two days before his arrival in London (12 September), en route from Bombay (Mumbai) via Marseilles, to attend the Second Round Table Conference, where he was the sole representative of the Indian National Congress. The Conferences were organised by the British Government to discuss constitutional reform in India. However, the Second Conference concluded without agreement: "The government hardly even listened to Ganhdi's demand for immediate and full responsible government. Disgusted with the proceedings, he left England in December 1931" (Peter Heehs, India's Freedom Struggle 1857-1947: A Short History, OUP 2004). The Round Table Conferences did lead eventually to the passing of the Government of India Act, 1935, but this "pleased few in India... [Nehru calling it] a 'Charter of Slavery', and humorously referred to the safeguard-ridden document as 'a machine with strong brakes but no engine'" (ibid.). A highly appealing and authentic document, taken at a key moment during the Indian struggle for independence in which Gandhi played such a pivotal role - captured by a photographer with whom he had a warm relationship and from the days when he first consented to being photographed.

AVANT-GARDE POETRY: IZBRANE PESMI [CHOSEN POEMS].

Ljubljana, Slovenia: Tiskovna zadruga . 1931 - 8°. [1] printed title, 171 pp. including a portrait and a fascimile of a manuscript, original illustrated wrappers in green and black, unbound pages, as originally published (Very Good, old owner's remark on title page, wrappers slightly dusty with tiny tears). A second try to publish avant-garde poems by one of the most important Slavic modernist poets, Srecko Kosovel, whose works were never published during his lifetime, was made five years after his death in 1931. This is the fist illustrated edition with a portrait of the author on the cover.A Slovenian poet Srecko Kosovel is today considered one of central Europe's major modernist poets of avant-garde and constructivism. Born in Tomaj, today a Slovenian town near Gorizia and in vicinity of the Isonzo Front during WWI, hes parents moved him to Ljubljana in 1916. After the war he stayed in the capital, as his home town was annexed to Italy, where the Fascists soon started making a major pressure on the inhabitants. In Ljubljana he was writing poetry in an avant-garde circle of artists, many of who escaped the Fascist regime. Kosovel was unable to publish any of his works during his lifetime, as his poetry was not understood by a conservative circle of publishers. He died suddenly at the age of 22, when visiting his parents, of a desease, which followed a bad cold. A year after his death, in 1927, Kosovel’s friend Alfonz Gspan published his late friend's 66 early poems in a work Pesmi (Songs). Our book is an uncommon second try to publish Kosovel’s poems, including a cover with a poet’s portrait and biography in the introduction, written by a literary critic Anton Ocvirk (1907 - 1980). Other editions of his poetry appeared after WWII, but it was only the collection Integrali 26, published in 1967, again by Ocvirk as an editor, which presented Kosovel’s constructivist design of poetry in facsimiles, which put Srecko Kosovel among the major mid-European poets.

        Black Man and White Ladyship

Privately published, UK 1931 - Cunard's attack on racism. Original sewn brick-red soft wraps. Printed by the Utopia Press in London. Not for Sale stated on the back cover. Second printing stated on last page. Something of a curiosity as some sources state that there was only ever one edition of this printed, which was distributed privately to Cunard's friends. However given that the print run of this privately printed pamphlet was very small indeed ( how many exactly is unknown ) then it is probable that there was a second printing. THE WRAPPER : No wrapper as issued. THE BOOK : The book is square, complete and tight. There are no previous ownership inscriptions. The covers are clean and unfaded- no ugly creases or blemishes. The pages are clean and bright. There is staining to each of the pages where the string of the binding has pierced the paper. The closed page edges are unmarked. No foxing. The binding is tight. All round a bright copy of a notoriously difficult pamphlet. Paypal accepted. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        An Essay on India.

1931 - London, Routledge, 1931. 8vo. Original cloth, pp. viii, 175, spine a little faded, very few faint spots, otherwise a very good copy. First edition, scarce. First published in 1931, Robert Byron’s Essay on India evaluates the state of colonial rule in India and analyses the contemporary problems facing the country. Based upon Byron’s travelling experiences within India in 1929 as a correspondent for the Daily Express, the work explores political factors more fully than in Byron's earlier writings, evaluating the successes and failures of British colonialism in the region. The book, 'in the opinion of the viceroy, Lord Willingdon, contained the best brief statement of Indian political problems at that time' (ODNB). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Le Hedjaz dans la Guerre Mondiale.

Payot, Paris 1931 - 351 pp., French Text, half-title, preface by Maréchal Franchet D'Espèrey, 1 map, 3 plans, afterword, publisher’s original wrappers, slightly foxed and rubbed round edges, otherwise copy in very good condition, Collection de Mémoires, Études et Documents pour Servir à l'Histoire de la Guerre Mondiale. RARE WORK. General Édouard Brémond (1868-1948) was a French officer particularly active in Morocco in the Hejaz and then in Armenia and Cilicia. He played a major role in the revolt of Sherif Hussein against the Turks in the Arabian Peninsula, and was one of the promoters of the French influence in that region. Brémond studied at the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, from which he graduated in 1890 (honoured with the title "Grand Triumph"); he served in the 1st Regiment of Algerian infantry in southern Algeria and Madagascar, where he commanded the 1st detachment from Antananarivo in Madagascar. He also studied at the War College (1899-1901) and was assigned to the staff of the Division of Constantine (1901-1904), where he prepared maneuvers and recognitions in the Aurès, Algeria. He was an Officer in the 2nd infantry regiment (1904-1907), where he was responsible for creating a post in Sidi Bou Djenane. As a police officer of the Moroccan ports (1907-1908), he was appointed the deputy head of the French military mission in Morocco in 1909, director of the city of Rabat and its suburbs (1912-13) and intelligence service chief of Henry’s column (March-September 1913) to Beni Mtir and finally commander of arms to Kenitra (1913-14). General Brémond then commanded the 54th RI in Compiègne. He completed his military career as a brigadier general commanding the 2nd group of subdivisions of the 17th district in Toulouse (1923 -1928) and died in 1948. Returning to France in August 1914, he commanded the 64th Infantry Regiment. Wounded, he was appointed head of the French military mission in Egypt and the Hejaz (August 1916-December 1917). Indeed, the Sherif Hussein of Mecca in 1916 called the Arabs to revolt against the Turks. With the help of the English and Lawrence of Arabia, he hoped to release the Arabian Peninsula from the Ottoman Empire. The French government, which wanted to assert its presence in the region, decided to send a political and military mission to the province of Mecca, the Hejaz. With fewer staff, he advised the Bedouin forces playing an active role in the sabotage of the Hejaz Railway. He faced Lawrence, a fierce Francophobe with a strong character different from his own. General Brémond criticized in what was perhaps his most important book, "The Hijaz in the World War" the exaggerated role played by Lawrence in that revolution.
