London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1931. First edition, first printing.. Hardcover. This is a premium example of the elusive first issue of the hardcover binding of the first edition. India is a collection of 10 speeches made by Churchill as part of his campaign against the India Bill, over which he broke with his party?s leadership. Though his cause was lost, these speeches are considered to contain some of the finest examples of Churchill's rhetorical brilliance. Churchill spent formative time as a young 19th century cavalry officer fighting on the northwest Indian frontier, about which he would write his first published book. He did not adopt an early progressive attitude toward relinquishing control over the crown jewel of Britain's colonial empire. Nonetheless, it is instructive to remember that many of Churchill's dire warnings about Indian independence proved prophetic. Churchill had warned that too swift a British withdrawal from India would lead to bloody civil war and sectarian strife between Hindus and Muslims, Hindu domination, and destabilizing political balkanization of the subcontinent. All these predictions came to pass and, to a considerable extent, persist today. The first edition is most commonly found in orange paper wraps. A much rarer variant was issued in a hardcover binding with two variants - one with the spine title reading horizontally and one with the spine title reading vertically as it does on the wraps issues. Per Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen (pp. 372-375) the horizontal title binding preceded the vertical title variant. Offered here is a compelling example of this elusive hardbound first edition with horizontal spine title. Condition is near fine. The orange cloth binding remains square and tight with sharp corners and virtually no wear. Most impressive for the edition, the spine has been spared the usual sunning and retains bright color, with virtually no color shift between the covers and spine. We note only minor overall soiling to the coarse cloth binding. The binding is now protected with a removable, clear mylar cover. The contents are likewise excellent. Trivial spotting is confined to the text block fore edge. The sole previous ownership mark, intriguingly, is female and dated "June 1931." Note that publication was 27 May 1931. The previous owner name and date is inked on the upper front free endpaper. We also note a few instances of orange color bleed from either the dust jacket or the binding at the edges of the endsheets.         Featuring Konstantin Melnikov's Constructivist Architecture For Social Reform

Moscow, Leningrad (St Petersburg), 1931. Album of photographs and postcards highlighting the architectural works of Konstantin Melnikov in Russia's two prominent cities compiled by a visitor who attended the Moscow International Conference of Psychotechnics in 1931. Includes a menu with dedication and original signature by architect Melnikov. A scant few views are from Berlin. Contains 18 photographic views and colour postcards captioned in manuscript, 8 ephemeral documents such as travel tickets schedules and Deruluft air ads, and 1 map with his travel routes outlined in manuscript, the lot mounted to taupe cardstock leaves. Oblong 8vo. string-tied album measuring approximately 28 x 21.5 cm, marbled paper boards with typescript label to front. Views measure approximately 14 x 10 cm; other keepsake documents vary in size. Evidently interested in architecture, the traveller's album of views is centered on constructivist and functionalist movements, and indicates a distinct appreciation for the work of Russian architect Konstantin Melnikov. Also included are some of Moscow's magnificent eighteenth century buildings. The traveller flew with the short-lived Soviet-German airline Deruluft and participated in the VII Conférence Internationale de Psychotechnique [Moscow International Conference of Psychotechnics] in Moscow from 8 to 13 September 1931. His entrance pass is printed in French. Psychotechnics applies a psychological approach to technology, industry, and so forth, to control and modify human behavior for a practical purpose, such as social or economic problems. Significant examples of this practice being applied to architecture, were plentiful at the time of this tour to Russia as the Marxist-Leninist atheist Bolshevik revolutionaries and had busied themselves with expropriating churches to suppress religion, and replacing them with social clubs for "more appropriate entertainment." Nation-wide construction projects for clubs, dedicated to labour workers, which combined propaganda, educational and community center functions, were launched in 1926 and peaked in 1927, when trade unions commissioned 30 new clubs in the Moscow region. Melnikov won five of these ten projects (his sixth club is located in Likino-Dulyovo). Some of the photographic postcard views in this album inlcude: •The Rusakov Workers' Club, a notable example of constructivist architecture, designed by Konstantin Melnikov and constructed in 1927-1928 •The Kauchuk Factory Club, built from 1927 to 1929, a constructivist public building designed by Konstantin Melnikov •An apartment house for employees of the Foreign Affairs commissariat, designed by Melnikov and built in 1928. •Soviet Square, known as the Red Square today, showing the Obelisk of Liberty and the Lenin institute •Pashkov House, a neoclassical mansion bult in 1784-1786 which overlooks the Kremlin, the old building of the Russian State Library •A view of Saint Petersburg's Kunstkamera from across the Neva river, from the vantage point of the bronze lion monument near Palace Bridge. Established by Peter the Great and completed in 1727 it was the first museum in Russia, and later became the original headquarters of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. •The hydroelectric station and dam of the Volkhov river, situated in the industrial town of Volkhov. Construction work began in 1918 and was completed in 1927 with a capacity of 6,000 kilowatts. Lovely colour postcards illustrate historic scenes such as the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the iconic Moscow Kremlin. A map shows extensive travels through Russia and Germany, and also to Belgium, Holland, France, Sweden and England, with air routes, mostly of the Soviet-German airline Deruluft, delineated in manuscript on a map mounted to the second page. Finally, a menu from the Grand Hotel in Moscow, printed in French, is annotated and signed by the famous architect Konstantin Melnikov. Konstantin Stepanovich Melnikov (1890-1974) was a Russian architect, painter, professor, and a leader of the avant-garde movement in Moscow. He was born in the Moscow suburb of Petvosko-Razumovskii district. His architectural work, compressed into a single decade (1923-1933), placed him on the front end of 1920's avant-garde architecture. Constructivist architecture flourished in the Soviet Union in the 1920's and early 1930's. It combined advanced technology and engineering with an avowedly Communist social purpose. Although it was divided into several competing factions, the movement produced many pioneering projects and finished buildings, before falling out of favour around 1932. It has left marked effects on later developments in architecture. Constructivism is a theory of knowledge that argues that humans generate knowledge and meaning from an interaction between their experiences and their ideas. It has influenced a number of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, education, the history of science, and even architecture. Constructivist architecture was a form of modern architecture that flourished in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and early 1930s. It combined advanced technology and engineering with an avowedly Communist social purpose. Although it was divided into several competing factions, the movement produced many pioneering projects and finished buildings, before falling out of favour around 1932. It has left marked effects on later developments in architecture. Deruluft (Deutsch-Russische Luftverkehrs A.G.) was a joint Soviet-German airline, established on 24 November 1921. Deruluft opened its first service to Moscow from Königsberg on 1 May 1922. It started a new route from Berlin via Tallinn to Leningrad on 6 June 1928, and maintained both routes until 31 March 1936.

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran, 1931 312 pages with illustrations. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with front board and spine stamped in turquoise in original publisher's pictorial jacket. Signed by the author on the front free end paper. First edition.Though Thorne Smith's most popular works involve elements of fantasy and science fiction, the clever novel Turnabout takes his penchant for incorporating supernatural and magical themes in his work and puts one such plot twist to use as a comedic tool. An ancient Egyptian idol grows weary of the seemingly never-ending spats between the Willows, a young married couple, and forces them to switch bodies. As you might expect, hilarious hijinks ensue. Sally Willows envied her adman husband his glamorous work; Tim Willows felt Sally lived in ease and luxury while he was sweating to pay the bills. So an ill-tempered minor god, tired of their bickering, worked a modest miracle, and Sally Willows, now occupying her husband's body, experienced the full horrors of the Nationwide Advertising Agency, while Tim, now outwardly Sally, dealt with the amorous advances of a local Lothario. It was a toss-up whether Sally/Tim's well-earned dismissal or Tim/Sally's bizarre attempt at murder was more spectacular - but both seemed insignificant when Tim found he was pregnant!Turnabout was made into a 1940 comedy film directed by Hal Roach and starring Adolphe Menjou, Carole Landis and John Hubbard. Based on the 1931 novel of the same name by Thorne Smith, the screenplay was written by Mickell Novack, Bernie Giler and John McClain with additional dialogue by Rian James. It was also a an American television situation comedy that first aired on NBC in 1979, based on the 1931 novel of the same title by Thorne Smith. The plot was about a husband and wife who found themselves inhabiting each other's bodies, similar to the plot of Freaky Friday. The series.Condition:Signed on front free end paper, lightly rubbed and soiled. Etwas braunfleckig.         The Compleat Angler, or The Contemplative Man's Recreation

London: George G. Harrap & Co Ltd, , 1931. Being a Discourse of Rivers, Fishponds, Fish and Fishing Not Unworthy the Perusal of most Anglers. Small quarto. Specially bound for the publisher by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in red crushed morocco, spine gilt tooled with a fish motif (closely resembling that used on copies in the vellum binding), concentric gilt panels on sides with fish motif at corners, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, three-line gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Housed in a red quarter morocco slipcase. Colour frontispiece and 11 coloured plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, by Rackham. Attractive bookplate of Cyril Sturla (a captain in The Cheshire Regiment during the Great War). An excellent copy. Deluxe edition, number 1 of 757 copies signed by the artist; this is one of a putative 10 "special copies" in a luxury binding commissioned by the publisher and containing an original signed pen-and-ink and watercolour sketch by Rackham (this one captioned "Handle him as if you loved him" ? Walton's dictum for handling a live frog before impaling it on a hook) and showing an amusing riparian scene with a frog pleading with a gentleman, while a typically Rackhamesque anthropomorphic tree looks on. Describing his artistic method for these "specials", Rackham pointed out that "my little sketches must inevitably be of a light hearted or joking nature... They have to be spontaneous and free handed. The nature of the paper is such that there can be no preparatory drawing and no alterations".

EDITION ORIGINALE LIVRE DEDICACE

Autograph quotation signed ("King Faisal"). In Arabic. No place, 4. IV. 1931.

1931. Folio. 1 page. On uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. The original autograph contribution of one the leading figures of modern Arabian history and early Pan-Arabism to the Committee of the World League for Peace (Ligue Mondiale pour la Paix), a remarkable organization formed in 1925 with close ties to the League of Nations. The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states, precursor to the United Nations. In 1917 together with his father, Sharif of Mecca Hussein bin Ali, and British Colonel T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), Faisal organized the Arab Revolt in which several Arab regions gained their independence from the Ottoman Empire. During World War I, he helped Lawrence and General Allenby in capturing Jerusalem and Damascus. After the war Faisal became the leader of the Arab delegation at the Paris Peace Conference and lobbied for the creation of Arab Emirates from the former Ottoman ruled areas. During 1920, he ruled Syria and the following year was made King of the British Mandate of Iraq, a position he held until his death. - Autographs of King Faisal, member of the Hashemite dynasty, a descendant of the tribe of Muhammad, are of the umtost rarity; his 100-page notebook kept during the Paris Peace conference commanded GBP 110,000 in 1983 (Sotheby's, Mar 28, 1983, lot 77). Only two small typewritten letters with signatures have appeared on the market since; the present item is the first example of a document written entirely in Faisal's own hand. "Nations, especially the big ones, must forget their animosity and selfishness and strive to achieve one goal - World Peace; otherwise, humanity is doomed to destruction!" (translated from the Arabic). - A few minor pencil notations in the margins, but overall clean and in fine condition. Pax Mundi.

Un volume in quarto 29 x 24 cm.
