Rares rousseurs. Superbe papier de cuve. PREMIÈRE ÉDITION. TIRAGE A 160 EXEMPLAIRES SEULEMENT. Prokazniki. Gorlin and Bloch Blokh. Mirayev. [The Mischief-Makers]

Berlin: Petropolis. Very Good+. 1931. First Edition. Hardback. A very good bright copy in original colour decorated card covers. Not dated, presumed early 1930s. Landscape format. Illustrated throughout in b/w and colour. Text in Russian. Illustrator unknown.; Raisa Bloch, sister of Yaakov or Jacob Bloch, the owner of the Petropolis publishing house settled in Berlin when Petropolis moved there from Petersburg in 1922. Due to the rise of the NSDAP, Raisa and her lover Mikhail Gorlin moved to Paris in 1933 while Petropolis moved to Brussels. Publishing, however, continued in Berlin under the Petropolis name until 1938. Eventually, however, Gorlin (by then Raisa's husband) perished in a Silesian salt-mine in 1941 and Raisa in Ravensbruck in 1943. This book is undated but probably published before Bloch and Gorlin left for Paris in 1933. " ... we (Bloch and Gorlin) created ... another two children's books (this time in our native tongue)" Raisa wrote in 1931. See Lapidus. The seemingly innocuous children's story depicts a goose-stepping little boy and a sad little girl having to move to another home. .

Typed letter signed ("L. Trotsky") to Max Shachtman, Kadiköy [cosmopolitan district of Istanbul], 23 May 1931

In German. Two pages on one sheet, folio. A densely written letter of some 95 single-spaced typed lines. Some slight darkening along original folds, and light edgewear, but generally in fine condition. A superb letter from Trotsky to the ablest of his followers at this time. Though Shachtman later split the little Party into "Shachtmanites" and "Cannonites," he was in 1931 exceedingly close to Trotsky, and this letter gives one a feeling for the immense network of powerless "Trotskyites" (a word he himself deplored), all writing to and about each other while attempting to keep up with Trotsky's dialectic. Trotsky divides his letter into 5 sections, each dealing systematically with a particular subject. The first relates to a request that he write the preface to a book on China. Trotsky refers Shachtman to his arcticle in the Russian Bulletin nos. 15/16, "Stalin and the Chinese Revolution," and suggests this may be used for the purpose of the preface. His second section notes that "we are glad with Comrade [Jan] Frankel that you came at least half way out of your reserve towards [Kurt] Landau." Trotsky, in a combative tone, asks if Shachtman truly thinks that Trotsky was trying to instigate a split. Trotsky had sided with the up-and-coming Roman Well, who accused Landau of exaggerating the danger of a possible Nazi takeover of Germany. In May 1931 the left opposition split and Landau formed his own group. He reveals further factions, especially that led by French Surrealist writer and sociologist Pierre Naville, dividing efforts of the party in Austria, Germany, and America. "Not Landau's themes of tomorrow are crucial, but the fact that as long as his power is not threatened he approves of everything in China, also in America and all the other countries." His third section reports his pleasure that copyrights have generated a little money for Shachtman. He discusses his publication negotiations with Boni: "I am afraid that Boni will attempt to also subtract 5% of the Saturday-Honorary. Since on the one hand I have been cheated and... enough by the... I do need the money very urgently now, especially to institute a German theoretical organization, I have decided not to pay out the 5% even if I have to totally break the contract. I have written to Eastman in more detail about this. I would like to have the 'Militant' benefit from the 5%, from the book as well as the copy rights, this could be a substantial sum." The final two sections are cursory and state that he has no idea about some comments in the local press, and that "I don't have to tell you how pleased I am about the prospect of the change of the 'Militant' to a weekly paper. The next step must be a theoretical monthly paper. I am very inclined to express this special ruling to the 'Militant.'"

        The Waves.

London: Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press,, 1931. Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket designed by Vanessa Bell, and contemporary plain paper wrapper. Spine ends faded, covers lightly mottled, internally fresh save light spray of foxing to rear pastedown; an excellent copy in the jacket with toned spine, small circle of browning to spine panel corresponding to loss on the paper wrapper, and some nicks to spine flaps. First edition, first impression, with an excellent association: this copy is from the library of the Brace family, though unmarked as such. Donald Brace, co-founder of Harcourt Brace, the American publisher of the Hogarth Press books, was a personal friend of the Woolfs, visiting them on his regular trips to London. The Waves was well-received in both the UK and US, where Brace, in a vote of confidence, printed a first edition of 10,000 copies. Leonard Woolf "always offered the press wares to Donald Brace first" and noted in a letter in 1929 to Livia Schitz-Svevo that he "considered Harcourt Brace the best American publisher" (Willis, Leonard and Viriginia Woolf as Publishers, p. 393).

The Money Game - How To Play It: A New Instrument of Economic Education

J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd, 1931. 176 pages. "The author of this book believes that you can teach the fundamental mechanism of money and banking as you teach bridge, "by playing it," and thinks this game will do it. As an innovation in teaching method the possibilities are so revolutionary that no educator can afford to ignore it. Moreover, the game is an exceedingly entertaining one; as good a card game as any; can be played by any number from five to ten, and so is well adapted to the family circle, to the business man's club, or as a novelty for the next little dinner party." - from dust jacket. Contents clean and unmarked. Light wear and soiling to exterior of book which features bright gilt lettering and design upon backstrip and front board respectively. Binding sound. Game pieces uniquely stored in boxes within a box inside back board. Minor repair to one interior box. Dust jacket bears several closed tears and is missing a few chips, most notably at top fore-edge of back board and lower corner of back flap. Dust jacket is not price-clipped, bears average wear and is preserved in a glossy new archival-grade Brodart cover. Includes a total of 260 game pieces: 8 score cards; 2 jokers; 150 bank notes; 100 game cards. Overall, a quality copy of this unique and intriguing work.

Autograph Quotation signed ("Prince Smad"). In French. No place, July 1931.

1931. Folio. 1 page. On uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. The original autograph contribution of Samad Khan to the Committee of the World League for Peace (Ligue Mondiale pour la Paix), a remarkable organization formed in 1925 with close ties to the League of Nations. The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were numerous dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states. "War, terrible in all times, has become vain and profitless today, and is equally disastrous for all involved, as even the counquering countries, as well as neutral countries, without exception, can no longer escape the suffering engendered by that calamity! The solidarity between nations has thus become fatally clear. Because of this, peace is no longer simply an ideal, it is becoming a necessity and an obligation. Even the most sceptical among us must finally give pause and reflect. Yet, how rarely are the means we choose to attain this much desired goal the most practical ones! Despite the fact that it is easy to understand that warfare and arms are merely effects, and that it is illogical to wish to avoid them while their causes persist! Can we extinguish an electric light without turning off the switch? Peace can only be seriously envisaged if it is also on a solid base, honest and practical, cemented by the work of the League of Nations, itself equipped with the effective means of intervention! Security for all, men of state and the people, should be the objective, the effect of which will be an inevitable disarmament and sincerity between nations. General fear must make way for a general trust and for faith in the respect of rights and in the future of humanity. Our civilisation owes this to itself, lest it be overcome. [Signed] Prince Smad, former Extraordinary Ambassador to London, former Persian Minister in Holland, and in France, former Premier Delegate of Persia to the Conference in The Hague and the Conference on the Revision of the Geneva Convention, and Permanent Court of Arbitration". Prince Samad was Ambassador to London, Holland, France. He personally owned the Embassy in Paris, which he made his home. Briefly Prime Minister of Persia in 1918. Pax Mundi. Geneve, Societe paxunis, 1932.
