Photograph album of yachting and deep-sea fishing cruises with manuscript titles:] Southern Cruise of the Yacht "Ara" [to the Bahamas and Cuba], Feb. 1925 [and:] Southern Cruise of the Yacht "Ara" from Miami (Fisher's Island) Fla. [to Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba] on March 6th to April 2nd, 1930

n.p., 1925; 1930 - A private family album documenting two of the tours of the celebrated yacht Ara, owned by William K. Vanderbilt II. Although Vanderbilt published numerous volumes recording his cruises, these voyages do not appear among his published logs. The photographs are captioned by his daughter Muriel, who records numerous details in a neat hand. The cast of characters in 1925 includes "Pops" (Wm. K. Vanderbilt II), "Self" (Muriel), her sister Consie (Consuelo), Muriel's fiancé Freddy (Frederic C. Church, Jr., whom she married in July 1925 and divorced in 1929), Ellen, & Dick. Muriel's uncle Harry (Harold S. Vanderbilt) makes a walk-on appearance in Key West. Among the party's activities was fishing, with more than a dozen photographs showing the sisters working the rod, members of the party with the morning's catch (variously tuna, barracuda, shark, and a sea turtle), and portraits of the three young ladies, Dick, and Freddy, each holding a trophy catch. The 1930 cruise to Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba, with a party including Muriel, "Pops", Rosie (his second wife, Rosamund), and Tony, comprises views from the yacht and at ports of call, as well as many scenes of rafting on the Rio Grande River and a few snapshots of fishing on the Demaji River (where the log details three days of successful tarpon fishing, not illustrated). The group of post cards includes scenes in Cuba, Haiti, Lake Tahoe, and the Monterey coast in California, including several real photo cards of the Pebble Beach area, among them a shot of woman golfer Marion Hollins on the 7th Green. A window into a lost world of private travel and an excellent visual record of two Vanderbilt family cruises, with good sporting content (VANDERBILT, WILLIAM K., II) Oblong 4to. With 155 photographs (86 3-1/2 x 6 inches; 69 3 x 4-1/2 inches) corner mounted on album leaves, 2 to 4 per page, captioned in ink by Muriel Vanderbilt. 94 numbered pages, of which pages 49-80 additionally contain 63 mounted post cards (10 real photo post cards, 32 printed color cards, 21 black & white cards). With 5-page typescript log of 1930 cruise inserted at p. 28. Black leatherette album, with leaves on two posts, tied with cord. Condition generally very good to fine, some photos with fading or silvering. For the Ara cf. Toy 608 & 758 (for 1924 & 1926 cruises); Morris & Howland p. 148

Léon BENIGNI (1892-1948) a illustré Alfred de MUSSET (Bénézit, I, 624-25).         MOBY DICK

Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1930. ONE OF 1,000 COPIES. Hardcover. 298 x 216 mm (11 3/4 x 8 1/2"). Three volumes. ONE OF 1,000 COPIES. Original publisher's black cloth decorated and titled in silver, apparently original glassine wrapper (though without the paper flaps), publisher's (slightly scratched) aluminum slipcase. With more than 250 large and small woodcut illustrations by Rockwell Kent. "The Artist and the Book" 140; Lewis, p. 145; "A Century for the Century" 22. Short, thin chip to glassine along head of rear cover of first volume, barely perceptible offsetting from woodcuts onto facing page, but A VERY FINE SET, the bindings virtually pristine (with the double protection of glassine and aluminum), and the text clean, fresh, and bright. This is a beautiful copy of one of the handful of great American illustrated books of the last 100 years. In his "The 20th Century Book," John Lewis calls Kent's "Moby Dick" nothing short of "a stupendous piece of illustration." Lewis says that "there is a mystic streak that runs through [Kent's] work, enabling him, if not to match Melville's magnificent prose, at least to give some pictorial substance to this allegory." A painter and illustrator with transcendentalist and mystical tendencies, Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) spent much of his career living in, visiting, and producing images of rural or remote locations. His paintings of Maine, Alaska, Newfoundland, and Tierra del Fuego helped established a reputation sufficient to encourage the publisher R. R. Donnelley to approach Kent in 1926 with the request to illustrate an edition of Richard Henry Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast." Kent suggested "Moby Dick" instead, the publisher wisely agreed, and when our limited edition appeared, it sold out immediately (a Random House trade edition was also very well received). Although certainly not obscure, "Moby Dick" was surprisingly less well known at the time of our publication than it is today, and the popularity of the Kent illustrated edition was significant in reinforcing the novel as the classic it is now considered. The Lakeside "Moby" is seen on the market with some regularity, but usually both the aluminum slipcase and the original glassine are either missing or beat up.

        Don Quixote de la Mancha

London - Nonesuch Press, 1930 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A limited edition, number 1238 of 1475 by Nonesuch Press, with twenty-one colour illustrations by E. McKnight Kauffer, including a colour illustration to frontispiece to each volume. First edition thus, (a reprint of the seventh edition, printed in 1743). In two volumes complete. 'In Motteux' translation revised anew (1743) and corrected and rectified and filled up in numberless places by J. Ozell who likewise added the explanatory notes from the best editions in English and Spanish. 'Don Quixote, fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, is a novel written by Miguel de Cervantes. The novel follows the adventures of Alonso Quijano, who reads too many chivalric novels, and sets out to revive chivalry under the name of Don Quixote. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who frequently deals with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood with a unique Earthy wit. He is met by the world as it is, initiating themes like Intertextuality, Realism, Metatheatre and Literary Representation. Published in two volumes a decade apart, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature, and one of the earliest canonical novels, it regularly appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published. In one such list, Don Quixote was cited as the 'best literary work ever written'. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (29 September 1547 - 22 April 1616) was a Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright. His magnum opus, Don Quixote, considered the first modern European novel, is a classic of Western literature, and is regarded amongst the best works of fiction ever written. His influence on the Spanish language has been so great that the language is often called la lengua de Cervantes ('the language of Cervantes'). He was dubbed El Prncipe de los Ingenios ('The Prince of Wits'). Edward McKnight Kauffer (14 December 1890- 22 October 1954) was an American-born artist noted for his avant garde graphic design and poster art, especially in England. Nonesuch Press was a private press founded in 1922 in London by Francis Meynell, his wife Vera Mendel, and David Garnett. Condition: In handsome full crushed morocco bindings. Externally, generally smart with only slight wear to extremities and occasional marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.

Brown suede album with hand-painted suede covers with suede ties, with front cover having a hand-printed title ÒPhotographs U.S.S. Algonquin C.G.Ó & Coast Guard emblem.. Photographs generally Very Good or better. Album - Very Good.. An extensive, albeit unofficial, visual record of life aboard the USS Algonquin, commissioned as a Revenue Cutter in 1897 and retired late in 1930. The Algonquin operated along the East Coast of the United States with additional assignments in the West Indies and the Gulf of Mexico. Later, in cooperation with the U.S. Navy at the onset of World War I, the Algonquin patrolled and defended Chesapeake Bay, with subsequent assignment to European waters, escorting over 750 ships safely in her rounds between Gibraltar, England and the Azores. & & In 1919, the Algonquin was transferred to the West Coast, assigned to the 13th Naval District, which meant patrolling the Pacific Northwest, as well as the islands and coast of Alaska, which included protection of endangered seals. & & Evidence suggests this album compiled by Farrell Harvey, a documented Algonquin crewman [F 1c] during the late 20s/early 30s, while the ship was stationed in the PNW. These primarily uncaptioned photographs illustrate the rough and ready life of sailors such as Harvey during their shipboard tour, with divers images of the crew, their drills and daily tasks, and significant occasions such as the Equatorial Line Crossing Ceremony. Many photographs show sister ships and other vessels, coastline scenery, whaling, and people encountered in the tropics and divers scenes while patrolling along the Pacific Northwest Coast. & & A wonderful primary source for seeing the life of a Coastie aboard a cutter during the late 1920s, and into the beginning of the 1930s.
