AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS)

Washington, D.C., 7 Jan. 1930. Letter. Vertical crease from mailing, otherwise Fine and very frameable. A fine one-page letter of @75 words on United States Supreme Court 4-7/8" x 7-3/4" stationery to William Preble Jones, Chief Probation Officer, District Court of Somerville, Massachusetts. Holmes thanks Jones for a pamphlet and talks about the memories it brought, briefly quoting from Wordsworth's "The Solitary Reaper": "I recall old, unhappy, far-off things and battles long ago and also the old Dept. of Boston, which it is always moving to remember-- I cannot tell you about the Wendell Phillips connection. It was through the mother(?), but I cannot put my hand on a book about the mother's(?) genealogy that might explain it." Holmes was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1902 by President Theodore Roosevelt, a position he held until his retirement in 1932. Holmes became famous for his liberal interpretations of the U.S. Constitution and was known as the "Great Dissenter" because of his disagreement with the views of his colleagues on the Court. His lectures on common law at the Lowell Institute in Boston, collected as THE COMMON LAW (1881), are considered a classic of legal writing. Together with the original envelope with the Supreme Court of the United States printed return address also filled out in Holmes's hand.

COLLECTED POEMS OF ROBERT FROST with AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT POEM SIGNED

New York: Henry Holt and Company, (1930). First Edition. Hardcover. Fine, lacking the uncommon dustwrapper. First Trade Edition. Crane A14.1: one of 3870 copies printed from the plates of the Random House limited edition. Winner of a Pulitzer Prize. Laid in on an unruled index card is a fair copy AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT of a poem, "A Time To Talk," completely in Frost's hand and SIGNED by him at the conclusion with the dedication "For (looks like George but we don't think so) Bush." A comparison to the poem, first printed in MOUNTAIN INTERVAL and here printed on page 156 reveals that Frost has added a line in the copy he has made. After "Blade-end up and five feet tall," Frost has added "Like a sunflower stalk," which is not included in the printed poem. A fine and scarce example of an altered holograph poem by Frost.

VI. 1930. - Large 4to 2 pp. An comprehensive letter to one Mr Wolf, explaining why he was unable to write the German libretto of Verdi's "I vespri Siciliani" for more than 15 years now, which, in his opinion, is the "weakest libretto that was ever written for him" (transl. from the German original). Although Verdi's publisher Ricordi had even urged him in the year before to write it, he declined to do so, and is now utterly satisfied that his correspondent wanted to write the German libretto: "[.] One obstacle, however, remains morally and legally [.]". - Somewhat browned and small damage to edges.

[History of the Peloponnesian War]. Translated into English by Benjamin Jowett

Chelsea: Printed at the Ashendene Press, 1930 One of 260 copies on handmade paper out of a total edition of 280 copies. This is the last of the great folios printed by the Ashendene Press, following Spenser's Faerie Queen and Minor Poems, Malory's Morte D'Arthur, and Cervantes' Don Quixote. Full cream-colored pigskin with gilt spine. . Large folio, 16" x 11 1/2. Printed in black and red in Ptolemy type with chapter summaries in the margins printed in Blado Italic type. Decorative initial letters and opening lines of each of the eight books designed by Graily Hewitt. Covers very lightly soiled, a hint of foxing to the endpapers. Otherwise a fine, clean copy of one of the highlights of the Ashendene Press. In February 1931 a Notice was sent out to subscribers announcing the forthcoming issue of 'Thucydides' and in it was foreshadowed the closing down of the Press. After referring to the projected edition of Daphnis and Chloe, it goes on to say: 'It is more than probable that these two books will be the last to be issued from the Ashendene Press, with the possible exception of a Descriptive Bibliography of the Press, containing a number of specimen pages from the books printed between 1895 and the date of the closing down, and also specimens of the woodcut illustrations and initials used therein. It is ifficult to speak with certainty about the giving up of a hobby which has for more than 35 years occupied so many of my leisure hours, and I may be tempted to add yet another volume to the list. The chances are against it, but time alone will show'" (Ashendene Bibliography, p. 89).

        Autograph manuscript: "Poems 1925"

London,, 1930. Octavo. Original batik-patterned green wrappers printed in black and gold. In a matching card slipcase. In excellent condition. With the author's 3-page autograph letter presenting this manuscript to Sir Robert Abdy, with the recipient's small bookplate to the front pastedown. Acton alludes to Abdy's gift of a book from which he had "learned much". The manuscript itself is essentially a fair copy of part of Acton's Five Saints and and Appendix with some occasional corrections. Two pages at the end are neatly crossed through. Acton's papers are held institutionally and manuscript material by him is rare in commerce.

Scène espagnole] Les prêtres et la croix *

[Vers 1930].

        CONFESSIONS OF ZENO

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. First American edition. Fine/Very Good +. A lovely copy of Svevo's best work, a novel that is widely regarded as the "great modern Italian novel." Book Fine with a touch of mottling to the cloth on the rear board, otherwise clean, fresh and unread. In a Very Good + price-clipped dust jacket with small chips at the spine ends and one corner, otherwise in a quite attractive state. & & Self-published in 1923, the novel was largely ignored until championed by James Joyce, who had known Svevo and his writing for over 15 years. In fact, Svevo is credited as the inspiration for Joyce's immortal "Leopold Bloom" character in "Ulysses." A charming, riotous work of psychological realism in which Svevo's neurotic character writes his memoirs on the advice of his shrink. Fine in Very Good +. dust jacket.
