A Treatise On Money: Two Volumes

London: MacMillan & Company, 1930. First editions of each volume. Octavo, two volumes, original blue cloth. Review copy with the slip from MacMillan in volume one. Each volume is fine in the rare dust jackets with light wear to volume one of the spine. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Exceptionally rare in the original dust jackets and in this condition. In 1930, Keynes brought out his heavy, two-volume Treatise on Money, which effectively set out his Wicksellian theory of the credit cycle. In it, the rudiments of a liquidity preference theory of interest are laid out and Keynes believed it would be his magnum opus…[however, criticism was swift and extreme] and the Treatise led to the formation of a reading group, known as 'the circus,' composed of young Cambridge economists Richard Kahn and others… Kahn dutifully delivered reports of the Circus's discussions to Keynes, who subsequently began revising his ideas. One resulting criticism of the Treatise was that it failed to provide a theory of the determination of output and employment as a whole— a particular pertinent question given the huge amount of unemployment at the time" (History of Economic Thought).

The Theory of Interest; as determined by impatience to spend income and opportunity to invest it

New York: The Macmillan Company,, 1930. Octavo (220 × 144 mm). Original dark blue fine-ribbed cloth, spine lettered in gilt and with single gilt rules at head and tail, front cover blocked in blind. With 3 folding tables. Printed errata slip tipped in at page vii. Ownership inscription to the front free endpaper. A very good copy. First edition of Fisher's Theory of Interest, a revised version of his earlier book The Rate of Interest (1907). Dedicated to John Rae and Böhm-Bawerk, it is a further development of their ideas: "its greatness as a book lies wholly in its outstanding pedagogic qualities ... [which] amounted to the demonstration that the real rate of interest is determined by both demand and supply, by the demand for production and consumption loans on the one hand and the supply of savings on the other" (Blaug, Great Economists before Keynes, p. 79.).

Two Autograph Letters Signed, circa 1930

1930. Two holograph signed letters addressed to Hammett's longtime secretary, Eleanor Wolff, on the stationery of the Madison Hotel and Restaurant in New York. Rectos only, in black ink. Matted and framed with the highly recognizable photograph of the author from the dust jacket of Hammett's The Thin Man. Fine condition. Letter 1 reads as follows: "Dear Miss Wolff, Will you phone me so we can fix a time to talk about the secretarial position I advertised? Yours truly, Dashiell Hammett." Letter 2: "Dear Miss Wolff, I feel too lousy to work today--thank God. See you tomorrow. D.H." A tremendous combination of historical significance, humor, and a revealing sentiment from a notoriously lazy genius, written the year "The Maltese Falcon" was published.

His reputation as a muralist, painter and illustrator was well established in Paris, London and Munich before arriving in the United States in 1915, at the age of thirty-three. Skilled in an unusually wide range of media, he had won gold medals at exhibitions in Budapest, Leipzig, and at the Panama Pacific International Exhibition."Among Pogány's many murals are those for the Heckscher Children's Theatre in New York City and the Niagara Falls Power Station. As a painter he did portraits of famous people in all walks of life. An expert on scenery design and lighting effects, Pogány also designed sets for ballets and operas, including "Le Coq d'Or," and for many films, such as Modern Times for Charlie Chaplin as well as animated cartoons based on his children's books."Among his other artistic endeavors Pogány was an accomplished book illustrator. It was this phase of his career, especially as an illustrator of children's books, which gives this collection special relevance for Special Collections & University Archives at the University of Oregon Libraries. Pogány designed and illustrated more than 150 books. His illustrations include those for the Rubaiyat and the Sonnets from the Portuguese, The Song Celestial, The Adventures of Odysseus, Gulliver's Travels, and many others, both classic and original."Working tirelessly right up until the end, Willy Pogány died in 1955" (University of Oregon, Guide to the Willy A.         Years of Grace

Houghton Mifflin, Boston and New York 1930 - Book is square; pages show only very mild toning to edges. No repairs have been made, nor are any needed. Black fabric retains some of its original gloss. Red titles and devices to front board and spine still clearly legible, save for publisher's name to tail of spine, where most of the red is gone. Stated "Ninth Printing October 1930," while the first was in June. (This is NOT the first printing.) Previous owner's name and handwritten date "1931" to FFE, where we also find a small Boston bookstore label. Red topstain near fine. Fore edge shows some small areas of slight reddish-brown discoloration. Both front board corners bumped, but board corners otherwise show only the slightest wear, nor is there any fraying of fabric at the spine. A handsome copy of the Pulitzer Prize winner, from the year of first publication. 581 pp. Cat's Curiosities sells used books. We attempt to identify books which have a damp or musty smell, when we sell them at all. Otherwise, buyers should assume our used books have been shelved inside human habitations and have been exposed over the years to some combination of wood smoke, tobacco smoke, leather dressing, or other aromatic agents unknown to us.         William S. Schwartz, a Study

Chicago: L. M. Stein, Publisher, 1930. Second Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Dustjacket, as Issued. 23 x 28 cm. . The first edition was published in August 1930. This second edition was published two months later in October, 1930. Both editions are extremely rare. The first edition has an original lithograph on page 5. In that first edition there is a statement that the lithograph will not be included in any subsequent editions. The publisher kept his word, and so even though this second edition has a reference to the original lithograph in the list of illustrations, it has this reference only because the page listing the illustrations was reproduced unchanged in the second edition. A color photocopy of this litho is laid in here, reproduced from the original litho to be found in a first edition copy (see the single sheet reproduced in the photo here). Both editions are as rare as hens teeth. Printed on fine paper, many full page illustrations. William S. Schwartz was born in Smorgon, Russia February 23, 1896. His studies and travels were extensive as was his body of work and musical endeavors. Schwartz studied at the Vilna Art School in Russia with a four-year scholarship before immigrating to the United States at the age of 17. He lived with his sister in New York for eight months before joining his brother in Omaha. There he became a house painter and continued his study in the fine arts at the Kellom School. Under the instruction of J. Laurie Wallace, Schwartz studied life drawing, portraiture and painting. He later moved to Chicago where he continued his lessons at the Art Institute and assumed the role of principle tenor in various vaudeville, radio, concert and operatic performances. His musical career supported his tuition at the Institute throughout the 1920's when he became a well-recognized painter. Schwartz's musical career continued to influence his works of abstract compositions, most notably in his series Symphonic Forms. His paintings have been closely sourced to the writings and philosophies of Wassily Kandinsky who explored the relations of music, spirituality, color and abstract form. After graduating from the Art Institute, Schwartz continued to exhibit there annually in group shows until, in 1926, he held his first solo-exhibition at the Institute. He continued to exhibit extensively in Chicago, Madison, Dallas, New York, Detroit and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Schwartz received numerous awards and prizes throughout his career across the United States. In 1930 Manuel Chapman published an extensive study, William S. Schwartz and In 1984, Hirschl & Adler Galleries Inc. held an exhibition of Schwartz's work for which Doug Dreishpoon wrote an eloquent introduction to the catalog. William S. Schwartz died in Chicago in 1977.

ORIGINAL 1930 TYPED LETTER, SIGNED (re: The Maltese Falcon, The Glass Key & The Thin Man)

1930. Hammett, Dashiell. ONE PAGE TYPED LETTER, SIGNED ["Sincerely, Dashiell Hammett"]. 135 East 38th Street, New York, April 21st, 1930. Highly desirable unpublished early letter from one of Hammett's most creatively fruitful years in which he makes mention of all three of his greatest novels. To "Dear Mr. Hammett" (no relation despite the shared surname), it reads: "Thanks a lot for the latest of your always kind notes. The Falcon seems to be going over pretty well and I think Earl Boothe's going to produce it on the stage in the Fall if I can get time off from the current book to do the dramatization. The next book, 'The Glass Key' is scheduled for publication in September or October, and then 'The Thin Man' and 'The Darkened Face' in February and August, 1931. Beyond that deponent saith not. Best of luck to you with the poetry and otherwise." The letter, written only two months after the book publication of THE MALTESE FALCON has some irony to it as Dashiell Hammett's precision in rattling off titles and publication dates bore no reality to what came to pass. THE GLASS KEY wouldn't be published until 1931; THE THIN MAN didn't appear until 1934. As for "The Darkened Face" -- there is a fragment of a manuscript with that title at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin. It now appears to have been a planned novel which never came to full fruition. Nor did Hammett write a stage version of THE MALTESE FALCON for Earl Boothe; instead the novel was almost immediately adapted to film, released by Warner Brothers Studios as a pre-code 1931 crime drama full of sexual innuendo starring Ricardo Cortez and Bebe Daniels. The Selected Letters of Dashiell Hammett 1921-1960 (edited by Richard Layman) were indeed "selected from nearly one thousand letters" yet only a mere four letters date - as this letter does -- from 1930, the year Hammett published THE MALTESE FALCON. Apart from two neat folds, the letter is in Fine, crisp condition.. Signed by Author.

        My Early Life

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. This is Churchill's extremely popular autobiography, covering the years from his birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament. Here is the first edition, first printing, offered in very good+ condition. The plum colored boards of this edition - particularly the coarse cloth of the first state - are especially susceptible to fading, soiling, and wear. Moreover, the contents are susceptible to heavy spotting and the binding is often cocked. That's why so many first editions of this book have been torn apart and rebound. Finding a very good copy like this is increasingly challenging. First state of the first edition, is confirmed here by 11 Churchill titles listed on the half-title verso. The boards retain bright, unfaded color and show very little wear, apart from a smallish bump to the lower front corner. The spine is faded as usual, but not as badly as most copies; the spine retains decent plum color and the gilt remains brightly legible. The contents are bright and tight. Internal spotting is light and substantially confined to the prelims, with heavier spotting on the text block edges. There is an inked previous owner name on the ffep and a small bookshop sticker on the lower left corner of the rear pastedown.         The Talkies (First Edition)

New York: Henry Holt, 1930. First Edition. First Edition. Near Fine in a very bright, Very Good plus dust jacket. One of the first books to be published on the subject of talking pictures, addressing the changes to the medium at a fairly technical level, though still aimed at the layman. Rather than the expected film stills one would normally see in such a title from this period, there are diagrams illustrating said changes, including the effect the new dimension brought to animated cartoons as well as photographed stories. A few tiny chips at the spine ends, else a splendid copy.
