The Mysterious Mr. Quin

London, W. Collins Sons and Co. Ltd. 1930., 1930. First Edition, 8vo. Publisher's black cloth, titles in red to spine and front board. Some trivial wear and edge spotting, spine a little frayed at head, but generally a bright, tight copy. Near fine; scarce in such clean condition.. The story of Mr. Harley Quin, who sparks new life into a quiet New Year's Eve party by unmasking a murderer. The character was author Christie's own favourite creation; Harley Quinn is an enigma, who appears and disappears unexpectedly- and usually by strange tricks of the light caused by stained-glass windows or flickering firelight. His background, family and friends are all a mystery, although his almost supernatural powers of detection are, however, very real. Wagstaff & Poole. Cooper & Pike; Detective Fiction [p82-89].

On the Theory of Brownian Motion

Lancaster: American Physical Society, 1930. First edition, offprint issue, of this important paper which introduced the ‘Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.’ Although its origins lay in statistical mechanics, this process has found a wide variety of applications, notably in mathematical finance.

& & The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, also known as the ‘Langevin equation’ in the physics literature, was originally used to describe Brownian motion, the random motion of a small particle suspended in a fluid due to the collisions of the fluid molecules with the particle. Brownian motion is most simply modelled by the ‘Wiener process’, but this is unrealistic because it fails to take into account the viscosity of the fluid. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is a modification of the Wiener process, but allowing for a frictional drag on the particle proportional to its velocity, in accordance with Stokes’s law.

& & Over time, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process tends to drift towards its long-term average. Such ‘mean-reverting’ processes are naturally suited to modelling several situations in finance. For example, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is used in the ‘Vasicek model,’ a mathematical model describing the evolution of interest rates.& As opposed to stock prices, for example, interest rates cannot rise indefinitely: at very high levels they would hamper economic activity, prompting a decrease in interest rates. Similarly, interest rates cannot decrease below zero. As a result, interest rates tend to move in a limited range, showing a tendency to revert to a long term average value. Similarly, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process can be used to model the behaviour of commodity prices, since it embodies the economic argument that when prices are ‘too high’ demand will reduce and supply will increase, producing a counter-balancing effect. When prices are ‘too low’ the opposite will occur, again pushing prices back towards some kind of long term average.

& & Leonard Ornstein (1880-1941) was a Dutch physicist who studied under Hendrik Antoon Lorenz at the University of Leiden, receiving a PhD on a problem in statistical mechanics. In 1914 Ornstein succeeded Peter Debye in the chair of theoretical physics at the University of Utrecht, and over the next three decades carried out important work in experimental atomic physics. The Dutch-American physicist George Uhlenbeck (1900-1988) studied under Paul Ehrenfest, receiving his PhD in 1927 for work on statistical methods in quantum theory. After spending eight years at the University of Michigan, in 1935 he moved to Utrecht to take up the chair vacated by Hendrik Kramers. Although most of his work was in statistical mechanics, he is perhaps best known today for his discovery in 1925 of electron spin, in collaboration with Samuel Goudsmit, another of Ehrenfest’s students.

& & Not in OCLC.& Offprint from: Physical Review, vol. 36 (1930), pp. 823–841. Original printed self-wrappers, pp. 823-841 [1:blank], very fine.

London: Duckworth,, 1930. A Mediterranean Journal. Octavo. Publisher's light blue cloth titles gilt to spine, pictorial endpapers reproducing the jacket design of the trade issue, top edge gilt. Illustrated with photographs and a frontispiece drawing by Waugh. Spine a little tanned and faded and rolled, slight rubbing to ends and corners, faint spotting to edges and some end leaves, frontispiece just a little loose at the bottom; a very good copy. First edition, limited issue, of Waugh's first book of travel writing, an account of his Mediterranean honeymoon cruise with Evelyn Gardner; one of 110 numbered copies signed by Waugh and specially bound with a page of the original manuscript bound in. This is the only example of a title by Evelyn Waugh to be issued thus, as part of the brief vogue in the thirties for limited editions incorporating parts of the original manuscript. The fashion waned when authors realised the value of their working manuscripts, and the cost of loosing them in this way. Waugh, in the manuscript page included in this copy, expands upon ancient Egyptian art, and related how the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen was "vulgarised in the popular press".

Vol. 18 of 29 Atlases of Insurance Maps for Brooklyn.Coney Island and Brighton Beach

New York: Sanborn Map Company, 1930. hardcover. very good. Atlas. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Massive elephant folio. Decorative calligraphic titles, indices, and key maps. Contains a set of 86 detailed maps of southern Brooklyn along with changes recorded on paste-on correction slips through 1974. Quarter leather binding with gilt title on front and spine. Minor wear to spine of original protective canvas cover. This volume includes Sheepshead Bay, Shore Parkway, Gravesend Bay, Beach Line, the Boardwalk and the Cyclone. The Sanborn map collection consists of a uniform series of large scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The maps were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property and therefore show the size, shape and construction of dwellings, commercial buildings, and factories as well as fire walls locations of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and types of roofs. The maps also indicate widths and names of streets, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They show locations of water mains, giving their dimensions, and of fire alarm boxes and hydrants. Sanborn maps are an unrivaled source of information about the structure and use of buildings in American Cities. The collection includes some fifty thousand editions of fire insurance maps comprising an estimated seven hundred thousand individual sheets. The Library of Congress holdings represent the largest extant collection of maps produced by the Sanborn Map Company. The majority of the maps were acquired by the Library through copyright deposit, but the collection was substantially enriched in 1967 when the Bureau of the Census transferred to the Library of Congress a complete set. The 1,899 loose-leaf binders were particularly noteworthy because they included later editions than those previously acquired by the Library. The Bureau of the Census set of maps had been regularly updated by printed, paste-on corrections supplied by the Sanborn Map Company, whereas the Library of Congress copies were retained in the form in which they were copyrighted.
