- Sehr gut erhalten.       San Francisco, CA, 1930. Photograph Album. Very Good. Photograph Album. Large (14"x10"x 2") black leather album with over 400 photographs. An exceptional collection.

        THE HAMMERSMITH MURDERS

Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1930., 1930. First edition. Pseudonym of Zenith Jones Brown, who also wrote using the pseudonym of Leslie Ford. Former owner's neat inked signature on the half-title page, and cloth spine faded somewhat, else a very good copy in price-clipped dust jacket. "A man is being murdered at 16 Caithness Road, is the cryptic message received by the Commissioner of the C. I. D. in an envelope postmarked HAMMERSMITH. Inspector Bull traveled to 16 Caithness Road and found a man who had just died, but the doctor said his death was caused by tetanus. A curious fact uncovered by the Inspector was that the dead man's father had been killed quite recently in a bus accident and that his daughter had been present at both events. From this beginning, two more murders and a series of robberies occur before the criminal is finally captured while preparing to commit the most terrible murder of all. An early Crime Club and Haycraft/Queen title. Interestingly this dust jacket appears in full color in the middle of Ellen Nehr's "Doubleday Crime Club Compendium 1928-1991," reserved for a showing of Crime Club vintage dust jackets.

        TRUE TO THE NAVY (1930)

Paramount 1930 - Vintage original 14 x 17" (35 x 43 cm.) jumbo lobby card, USA. Clara Bow, Frederic March, Rex Bell, dir: Frank Tuttle; Paramount. This is the story of a girl who works at a soda fountain in San Diego. She is the favorite of all sailors who come to port. Each one is her favorite as well, as they come in at separate times. Problems arise whenever they arrive at the same time. However, Ruby Nolan really pines mainly for the one gob who will not give her the time of day -- it is her mission to peak his interest. Film was made in both talkie and silent versions. Bow was known to audiences for her irresistible personality and for her red hair, and this fantastic image highlights just that! It also shows her with her many boyfriends, including Frederic March with his arms around her, and soon-to-be husband, Rex Bell (at lower right). One of the highlights, experienced in the sound version only, was Bow's singing of "Believe It or Not, I Lost My Man." That would be hard to believe. Both the silent and talking versions of this title are extant. This is a museum quality piece, VERY GOOD.

Crowell eight-page leaflet describing the work of Willy Pogany loosely inserted."Had Omar Khayyam, the old tentmaker, visioned the beauty of his verses centuries later in Western dress, as embroidered by a Hungarian artist, he might have had a new conception of the meaning of immortality. For Pogany, the Hungarian, had made Omar, the Persian, live again." (Willy Pogany and his Work. eight-page leaflet).Willy Pogany had previously illustrated the Rubaiyat in 1909, but these later illustrations are quite a different interpretation, more westernized and modernized than the earlier ones.Willy Pogány, born in Szeged, Hungary, in 1882, studied at Budapest Technical University and in Munich and Paris. His reputation as a muralist, painter and illustrator was well established in Paris, London and Munich before arriving in the United States in 1915, at the age of thirty-three. Skilled in an unusually wide range of media, he had won gold medals at exhibitions in Budapest, Leipzig, and at the Panama Pacific International Exhibition."Among Pogány's many murals are those for the Heckscher Children's Theatre in New York City and the Niagara Falls Power Station. As a painter he did portraits of famous people in all walks of life. An expert on scenery design and lighting effects, Pogány also designed sets for ballets and operas, including "Le Coq d'Or," and for many films, such as Modern Times for Charlie Chaplin as well as animated cartoons based on his children's books."Among his other artistic endeavors Pogány was an accomplished book illustrator. It was this phase of his career, especially as an illustrator of children's books, which gives this collection special relevance for Special Collections & University Archives at the University of Oregon Libraries. Pogány designed and illustrated more than 150 books. His illustrations include those for the Rubaiyat and the Sonnets from the Portuguese, The Song Celestial, The Adventures of Odysseus, Gulliver's Travels, and many others, both classic and original."Working tirelessly right up until the end, Willy Pogány died in 1955" (University of Oregon, Guide to the Willy A. Pogány Papers 1910-1967).
